    I agree with most of this. But I disagree with your point on good faith based political conservations and good faith based politics in general. When politics itself is radical and is life changing. The goal of politics is essentially domination of the other side and if the other side wins it quite literally effects the opposition. Wars have been started from this and it will continue because politics is radical. You can never get this but I will say this is wishful thinking none the less.

    I completely agree with you - as long as you don‘t have skin in the game. But what if you do tho? How am I supposed to remain composed and genuinely pursue wisdom when someone‘s argument invalidates who I am as a person or when someone even argues for something that will directly harm me or people I love?
    I feel like everyone has a threshold where other people‘s opinions cross over from disagreements to existential threats.
    For some people it‘s not that easy to see because there are little to no political opinions that are existential threats to them. But for some of us, there are a lot.
    A friend of my friend had an abortion because her /wanted/ pregnancy turned dangerous and the doctors decided to abort the fetus to save her life. This happened in Texas before the abortion ban. Had this happened just a few weeks later, she would most likely be dead now. A lot of women have already died because doctors are now more hesitant about aborting - they legally /have/ to wait until the mother‘s life is in danger before aborting - at which point it is often already too late.
    How am I supposed to look a person who is anti-abortion in the eye and see the conversation we are having as simply pursuing wisdom?
    I can do that in a conversation about which words you should or shouldn’t use but I can‘t if the issue is so impactful and could literally kill me and all of the women in my life.
    I feel like this is a very healthy and insightful video that can probably help a lot of people in normal everyday conversations. But as someone who is part of several politically targeted groups and has a lot of loved ones who are also parts of those groups - how am I supposed to do that? Even if I can tell the person I‘m talking to is a good person, how am I supposed to separate them from the things they are in favor of, if those things are so harmful?
    I genuinely wish I could see political opinions simply as disagreements. And there are definitely some opinions that aren‘t worth arguing over. But for some, the stakes are so high.

    I see where your comming from but one thing you(everyone) needs to understand is that esepcially dealing with new people not everyone has the same sense of humor or understanding of the world so when u say or do risky(potentially offensive) things you cant demonise that person for disliking it or not agreeing infact its your fault for not properly gauging them to see if that type of behavior would be acceptable with them some people are fine with it others arent. And just because you disagree with someone doesnt make them an idiot

    I find it hard to understand the importance of a word, like why are you adamant about the R word being okay to use? If it is offensive a group of people in our society, why be so adamant of its use? That’s what I find confusing about people consistently fighting for words..they often say, by giving it such power it becomes stronger, but words get forgotten all the time.

    • @AngeloSomers
      @AngeloSomers  7 месяцев назад +2

      Because trying to remove a word makes it stronger
      Supply and demand. A reduction in supply is an increase in potency. If the word is bad and you want to kill it, let go of it, don’t grasp harder

    • @mr.burkenstock4188

      it really isn’t just that simple. You can view the world as statistics, you’re only seeing it at 40% truth.
      That word has a history to it. To you, it may just be sound your mouth is making. To another person it carries a different meaning.
      However the R word is having a comeback in use not because of bold people like yourself who see it as a playful word but by the community the word is targeting using it as their own. It’s kinda the same as any other slur being adopted by the community that slur is targeting.
      Overall, I believe society creates the rules we follow. If society deems the use of a word as wrong then society has the right to correct a person for using a word and making that decision not to be around that person. If this makes you want to use that word more that just defines who you are in society. Yu know?

      As a person that is all but confirmed to be autistic, I find that reclaiming and using the words used against groups of people is indeed the groups' perogative to use them for themselves and usually to keep for themselves (like the n-word). Yet I wouldn't deny cases like the word "queer" that has all of its past meaning practically almost replaced (which in my opinion happened because of it being maybe less severe? (But I'm really not sure 😬)).
      BUT, "queer" was indeed reclaimed by the LGBTQ community, and certainly not by outsiders, who, indeed understand that using the word flippantly is indeed devaluing its original meaning, but aren't putting the care to make the word atleast have a positive connotation, but as a general word to just call something that you don't like bad.

  • @jabetsluis7905
    @jabetsluis7905 2 месяца назад

    I kind of feel like it's disingenuous to reduce words to noises to make your point. bc literally every word is a noise which means u are at least at face value implying we should never complain about people's words since they are only noises after all. like i hear someone using the n word for example. It'd be ridiculous for me to ask them to stop. which I don't think is true. just to make it clear I don't think using the r word makes someone evil, bad or anything sinister really. hell I use it instinctively myself at times and sometimes I just substitute the word. What I'm trying to say if u can a little bit of good for no effort why wouldn't I . I'm literally choosing simply to substitute 0.01 percent of words that offend big groups of people when ever I have the presence of the mind to do that without feeling really any guilt when I don't remember.

    • @slitbrow
      @slitbrow Месяц назад

      I don’t like to use much of the r word or n word because I know that they don’t feel normal coming out of my mouth because I decided so, not because society decided I shouldn’t say so. If I wanted to say it then I would but I don’t want to so I wouldn’t
      For me “offensive” words have always only been offensive words if used in an offensive manner. If you’re using a slur to hurt someone or put them down then you are completely in the wrong, why are you trying to put someone down? Why are you not worrying about yourself?
      Some of these edgy people that think using slurs, usually the n word, towards someone else are usually the ones who are also Christians and preach love for others but don’t show it themselves which is disgusting.
      TLDR: if you use a slur to call something stupid, like calling it retarded or calling your friend the n word (if you’re in position to do so) then I believe it’s okay. Slurs are only wrong when you use them to put others down imo

    It's the same thing with the Israel-Palestine debate going on ATM. People have such Strong Opinions about a conflict that they don't understand fully. Even I don't understand the full context of this war.
