- The rivalry between Audi and BMW is an automobile equivalent of the one between Apple and Samsung or Airbus and Boeing. And, as with all big-brand wars around the globe, you’ll find scores of keyboard warriors from both camps arguing about the merits of their favourite label and dissing the other at the same time.
The India-launch of the Audi S5 and the BMW M340i last month was reason enough for enthusiasts to restart the skirmish. Both these halfway performance offerings come with a 3.0-litre six-pot turbo petrol heart that push out somewhat similar output figures. And that’s what inspired us to do this comparison. So, which one is the more wholesome package? Grab your popcorn, it’s time for a classic Audi vs BMW showdown.

Are there any hardcore Audi fans ? Wondering . Audi is just more polished skoda or VW except some models like r8. why pay such a premium .
Reviewer himself seems to be hard core fan of Audi. This S5 nowhere close to m340i.
You should drive a proper Quattro audi , however there will be shared bits with vw/skoda

The drawback of M340i is the ground clearance we have a 330i M sport and A M2 the 330i scrapes almost in all humps in banglore so I we are planning to get the S5 instead of the 340i
Of course there is launch control on the Audi!
Both great machines, I just think the Audi looks considerably better. Also a bigger vehicle than the 340i. You really can't go wrong with either but that Audis looks are to die for.

4:00 Wait a second. I just bought a M340i yesterday and I had to pay extra for the Hartman Karbon speakers, gesture control, laser beam headlights, wireless charging in the US.
In India, all of these are standard features with the M340i.
Your starting price for the m340i is much cheaper to begin with

@@dougo5673 I think most of it is decided by the dealers because they know the markets very well. But then they can’t satisfy each and everyone’s needs. For example I’m buying the m340i in dravit grey by next month, but I hate the wheel option they have given us. The 18” wheels are not the prettiest ones. And putting another wheel is an expensive affair.

In Europe for the looks we compare the M340i with the S4 and the coming M440i GC with the S5. And no, we don't like the turbo lag here. Strange comments.
Maybe wrong choice of words on my part. Should have said turbo kick instead of turbo lag. And yes the S4 goes against the M340i, but we don't get that here at the moment.
We don’t get the S4 here in India for some reason...and yeah who like turbo lag ffs😂 if anything it’s something we car guys hate
The Audi also doesn't let you rev it out; it will upshift, even in manual mode. The BMW has no throttle lag ... it's instant. That could be good or bad. Makes it sensitive and thus easier to crash. The BMW is 4WD, and I believe somewhere in the UX you can change the settings (4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD). It is RWD biased, longitudinally mounted engine. I believe the BMW TWD bias is more aggressive than that of the Audi.
You can complain that the 340 looks like the 330, but the same can be said with the A5 and the S5...Both labels do the same thing, A6/S6 BMW 6 series and on and on and on. Oh, and I have never heard of ANYBODY that likes lag in their turbo car. This sounds like a veiled way of excusing a flaw in the car, which it is.
A fair review actually, except the part where he tells its too powerful for the road and European ppl like lag, but all other points are true, and audi is a lovely thing, its more of an gt rather than an sports coupè, ppl might prefer gt over sport sedans because they look cooler and are more comfortable, although I prefer the latter
The 21 M340i is an absolute beast on track and makes for a fantastic daily. The con that it is too powerful for the road is just a silly argument. Anyone can drive this car, BMW's traction control is amazing.

The ground clearance of 340i seems to be less than M5.. Is it even practical for our sub urban roads of small towns where pot holes are in abundance?

Not an advantage, but a powertrain engineer once told us that drivers in Europe like the sudden 'kick' they get from turbocharged engines.

The real feel of M340i is the drive. Take drive before you want to finalize. check this video on mute as listening is irrational. M340i is badass and good from all technical figures and Buoy this doesn't look like a regular 3 Series. Come-On!!!

BMW's handling is leagues better than Audi's. You can see the S5 understeering badly while cornering. There's nothing worse than plowing off the road while attempting to have a fun drive.
Dude.., 3 series competition is the Audi A4 and C-Class..., unless if the 3 series has advanced that it cant be compared to the usual rivals

With an on road price difference of 20-25 lakh s5 is no match for 340i. Also BMW thrills like none other .

What crack you smoking ?? The bmw 3series m340i does 0-60 in 4.2-4.3 seconds, the same as the s5…
@@etherealvisual3699 so I test drove both vehicles. The m340 is def better. But ultimately I went with the Audi s5. All black optic package with better wheels than this ugly one in the video.

Mayne! What was Audi thinking before placing S5 up against BMW M340i? It stands nowhere close to BMW in every department right from the standard features, equipment and even the massive price difference. Seriously? And even though it has that unconventional body design, it looks way uglier than the more conventional looking M340i that still manages to have a sporty stance.
You guys have tried really hard in your review to sell Audi to us but we are not THAT ignorant as to not be able to judge a better and sensible choice between the two. BMW needs no introduction. BMW - all day, any day. Stop making such biased review.
Agree to most of your points, except where you say the Audi is uglier? First of all, it wasn't a personal opinion. Everyone in the team who was present during the shoot found the S5 looks way too cool and more attractive than the M340i. Never said BMW looks ugly anyway, I just said it looks understated and subdued. Also, if you can manage, get both these cars, park them next to each other and see for yourself which one draws more attention. You'll be surprised!
And nope we aren't biased. We aren't here to please people and their personal opinions. We've had two fantastic cars to ourselves and our job was to tell you the pros & cons of both. It may seem biased to you because you've a preconceived notion on how it should be (I had too until I saw the S5 in person & then drove it). But sadly that's not how it works.
@@shivank_bhatt : Couple of things here: First, I forgot to mention that it was my subjective opinion to find Audi uglier than BMW. Looks are always a subjective opinion. There are people who find VW Beetle to be grotesque but I’m still smitten with its looks. Sure, everyone in your team may have found S5 to be way cooler and more attractive than M340i but majority of people in my contact found S5 to be just way too ugly for a car with coupe-esque body shape. In that particular form factor, I find Audi A7/RS7 to be much better looking. And it’s the reason why I got myself a BMW 5 series when I could have Audi S5 as an option as well in almost the same price bracket. Also, I didn’t say either that you find BMW to be ugly, I only commented at the looks of Audi S5 - and it’s still ugly for me. No offence please.
Well, the fact that you reviewed and explained Audi S5 more than half of the time where you only appreciated and seem to be enchanted with the car, explains your biased review. I truly mean no offence to you (because I believe you are one of those few auto channels that do unbiased reviews) but I have watched the reviews of Audi S5 on other popular auto channels as well like ‘Car and Bike Show’, ‘Overdrive’, ‘Autocar India’, etc as well; and non really seem to give an upper hand to S5 over M340i. Sure, S5 is a great car but is not really a competitive choice over M340i especially in price sensitive market like India. All that I could make a conclusion at the end of of the review was that you seems to have focused more on the pros of S5 to cover its many major cons. And no, I didn’t have a preconceived notion against the new S5 because the ground realities speaks louder than what you see in person. And the ground realities of the new S5 is just too depressing to prefer it over or even compete it against the new M340i.
I might come across as a BMW fanboy but I love Audi R8 more than any BMWs.
@@LuvvSURYA well I almost agree with you . But you haven’t noticed the number plates of Audi , it was the demo model from Audi showroom. If he wouldn’t appreciate it no matter how overpriced it seems against bmw ,his doors to Audi test drive vehicles will be closed forever .
But what I did not like at all was how he presented the more powerful engine of bmw as a con for our roads . If it was a con for people ,people would buy the regular 3series .
And yes regarding looks ,Audi might look more sporty to majority of people . Looks are subjective my friend .

Just because the journalist had a test car - which is what every journalist get their hands on at launch - doesn’t mean they are bound to make a biased review. One of the most popular and trusted auto channel - Car and Bike Show - had a test car for the review as well but they didn’t make such biased review and so did many other popular auto channels as well.
Sure, but I have to completely agree with you how he, sort of, presented the more powerful and much practical & sensible BMW with all cons at the end of day. Like anybody watching this review who knows nothing about the two cars, would most likely to be sold over Audi than BMW. Only if BMW M340i was not as flamboyant machine as the Audi S5, it’s first batch wouldn’t completely run out of stocks on the first day. BMW announced that on their website as well. Even a regular 3 series is selling like a hot cake in its segment over Audi A4. Yes, looks are a subjection opinion. I agree to that. Personally, I find S5 to be bland and disproportionately carved with coupe-esque form factor. Not that I don’t like Coupe-esque 4-doors given A7/RS7 are such a gorgeous looking machine, but S5 is grotesque. Though, I love that blue shade.

If I had a budget of 70 lakh on road ,I would book the same car myself . Also brand value of bmw is perceived higher than an Audi and so is the resale imo.

Bad and biased review. Bmw dont add artificial sound through speakers. What sort of a review is this. That’s the pure inline 6 u hear. Bmw is known for that( not channeling the sound through speakers).
