Hey Maudigan! Great job on the setup and mixing up the Hellcote 3000. This is super helpful in understanding what "milkshake consistency" means. Thanks for a great video! We appreciate it!
should always work with kaowool outside and with a respirator. make sure those cracks in the hellcote get filled, cuz when the forge is running the ceramic fibers try to go airborne and the cracks will let em loose. that's usually how you get longterm exposure to kaowool. some grumpy old men told me. great job and gz on the cool forge!
I had the same question when I was shopping for one. The only thing I could figure was the workspace between the ceiling and brick floor. The round one had a higher ceiling in the center since it was round, but based on the details on their site it sounded like the square one had more space. I wanted to put a 3” square mile steel tube in it as heat spreader and I was afraid it wouldn’t fit the round one. And, if I’m being honest I was subject to the “it costs more so it must be better” rationale…
I have the one burner forge, my wife got for me for Father's day. It's a bit small, could I possibly flip on its side, that way I can use a bigger crucible?
Question how hot does it get. I've seen where people say 1200. But I have heard it gets up to 2400. Are you able to tell about what temp it can reach. I'm looking to get one for my stepson.
I’ve only taken mine up to 1700, haven’t tried to go any higher than that. You can always get a few more degrees by putting some fire bricks in front of the doors. I drilled a small hole in the wall of mine, and stuck in a cheap thermocouple with a digital display from Amazon to help see the temp. It’s kind of a crutch though, there can be hotspots and cool spots so it isn’t super accurate. Ideally you want to learn what color 1200 degree steel looks like, and 1300 degree steel etc. Being familiar with that is probably better than a cheap thermometer. You could also get him a telescopic magnet. Steel becomes non magnetic between 1400-1500, which is a very convenient temperature; it’s in a temp range where important operations happen.
@Maudigan Makes thank you. I knew about the magnet part because of some of the machining I do. The reason I asked was if it will let him forge.weld with it. I guess I'm saying it right lol. It seams like something he is going to stick with so I don't mind putting in a little extra money for one that will work as he grows and learns. Thank you for the reply so quickly. I know nothing about forging
100% yes to using the coating. It’s very important. The blanket is made of tiny ceramic fibers that are similar to asbestos. You shouldn’t use or interact with the blanket without having a respirator on.
You covered that in your video about the similarities to asbestos and the safety concerns my prime concern is functionality of the forge minus the coating
I’ve never tried it, but I would imagine the insulation’s effectiveness is probably within the same order of magnitude with or without the hellcote. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I’m not positive though cause I’d never try or condone trying it without the coating. It’s literally a prophylactic, the condom of forging.
Thank you for your information it’s very helpful but if using the coating means I don’t have to wear the mask anymore then I’m down for that again thank you
It’s not something I pay close attention to so it’s a rough guess. Maybe in he neighborhood of 3-6 hours. That’s for a 30 lbs tank; find them easier to refill since every corner store has them and you don’t need an open bed to transport them.
I’m really liking it. It’s sturdy and hasn’t given me any issues so far. I did order a bag of the Hellcote and have to spot treat cracks as they form, but that was kind of expected.
Burners are to be flush to top, not hanging down in the way.
Yes, you’re correct, thanks for catching that.

Best of luck with your surgery, Maudigan. I hope you have a safe and fast recovery.
Thanks!

Thanks! I prefer measurements be in “glugs of water” but “milkshake consistency” is pretty clear too

oh final thing - coat the forge in ceramic coating like itc100 it will help keep it sealed, and makes the forge much more efficient :)
Is that a wen milling machine? If so how is it? I ordered one and haven't found too many videos on it.
Would be interested in seeing the stand for your forge.
I just put my hellcoat on last night. Itching to do my first burn and start slamming some metal with a hammer
What is the difference in the other Hell Forge sold? The semi round ones vs this one?

Interesting idea. I don’t have a foundry either. You’ll have to report back and let me know how it works.
Hi great video , did you use rigidizer before applying the refractory ?
Nope, I just applied the Hellcote directly to the soft Kaowool. It’s held up well so far.

Do you have to use the coating or is the blanket sufficient asking because I did not coat mine I’m new at this

im thinking about getting this one
Yeah I poured way too much water too quickly and god fed up with the brush. I ended up just using my hands and it worked pretty well.
How long does a tank of propane last you?

How do you like the forge
I’m really liking it. It’s sturdy and hasn’t given me any issues so far. I did order a bag of the Hellcote and have to spot treat cracks as they form, but that was kind of expected.
Appears 50% of the mixture is on the mixer
