Jarrod Charlifue Carpenter's minimalist scores are painted all through Pretty Hate Machine, Something I could never have could serve with the original Halloween track as theme and variation.
"I clearly remember my friends and I at 13 years old conning our parents into letting us see ‘Halloween’ when it came out in 1978. We left the theater forever changed. We were damaged and scarred, with the shit genuinely scared out of us and that theme stuck firmly in our heads. John Carpenter, it’s your fault that I turned out the way I did." - Trent Reznor 2017
Not sure when Halloween became syndicated for television but that was my first exposure to it. We went out to trick or treat and when it was over we sat down and watched Halloween while out parents sifted through our candy to see if it was tainted...what a time!!!
Driving home at midnight, unlit back roads, listening to this for the first time, can confirm. Checked my backseat once and kept expecting to see Mr. Myers on the side of the road.
Before I listened to this, I looked into what John Carpenter thought of it, since he is a master in so many ways, and is very protective of his compositions. He approved. Then I listened, and I fully understand why. Needless to say, Trent and Ross are epic in their own rights.
This is cool if you'te into techno rock versions of the theme. I much prefer dark and scary over a club type theme which is what this ultimately sounds like. Nowhere close to what Carpenter created.
I love the perfect, noisy, beautiful chaos mixed in with this classic theme. Trent's screaming voice as a background vocal/instrument always amazes me, because you really have to listen to hear it.
"I met him, fifteen years ago. I was told there was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding; even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong. I met this six-year-old child, with this blank, pale, emotionless face and, the blackest eyes... The devil's eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up because I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... Evil."
An electrifying version. It has those sweet overpowering NIN (Trent) touches to it, and yet the overall sound and tone remains pure Halloween. Totally does justice to Carpenter’s version.
Totally man. Trent is awesome anyway......and this is one of the best projects he did outside NIN..... I like it just as I do Carpenter and 90% of his movies!!
Since I grew up watching such films, and because I’m a woman, upon listening to this, I removed my top and bra and went outside in the dark to investigate, making sure to call out things like, “If this is your idea of a joke I’m not laughing.” Also for good measure, I fell down about 5 times.
What the original theme did, subtly, and which this version emphasises, is suggest a deeper, scarier and more primal horror. Yes, Michael Myers goes around murdering the hell out of people, but what drives him is more vast and frightening than simply a madman in a mask. Myers is malice and death personified - he REALLY is the boogeyman, the thing that terrified Loomis to the point of madness. And that's what the score suggests, with looming menace.
Yeah, this is like Halloween from michaels POV. It’s what’s behind the mask, the original is from the point of view of everyone else. I love this comment.
He is the literal manifestation of Samhain, as if the holiday came to life to claim what's rightfully it's own. To reap what it has sown. God I fucking love Halloween
@@neonsamus It's broadly implied that Myers is something... worse, though real life psychopaths with their social and professional success, wealth and power, are far more terrifying.
To ignore Trent’s entire catalogue prior to his collaboration with Atticus to focus solely on his body of work in conjunction with one person, (since 2005), would be a shortsighted abomination. Atticus has only been truly acknowledged as being on the scene since 2004 and has always worked in collaboration with others (since 1992 and his less than stellar music with other British artists); Trent has written entire albums on which he has played all of the instruments, produced, edited and programmed all by himself. Atticus has a less impressive career prior to teaming up with Trent. So, in acknowledging Trent’s genius, I am not dismissing Atticus’ contribution to this particular piece of work, I am simply admiring and recognizing Trent’s continued brilliance, now entering his fourth decade of published music. I look forward to their continued reworking and original material collaborations as well as Trent’s perpetual eminence.✌️
I love how it stays true to the original in more ways than one, yet distinctly sounds like the work of Trent and Atticus (at least to people familiar with their work). I love it.
Happy happy Halloween Halloween Halloween, happy happy Halloween silver shamrocks! - Whats worse? Snakes and bugs coming out of your head or having that song stuck in your head for the next couple of weeks?
I started playing this while my dog was asleep and that first chime made her leap up barking. That's how you know you've made effective music: when the freaking animals are scared of it.
Trent and Atticus also won a CMA award for their work on "Old Town Road," they have done all the music for Watchmen, and now, they are doing the score for Disney/Pixar's Soul. These two are unstoppable!!
Just don't say stupidities like that. Carpenter WAS a master filmmaker and a GREAT composer. But he has always been a money lover, far from the rebel image he has carefully fabricated, like Reznor. Now he would eat shit if it payed well. Reznor and Zimmer and those fuckers can fuckin' continue to do OSTs, great Hollywood scores died with Jerry Goldsmith.
Have you ever heard something just so spectacular that it makes you feel like you're having an out-of-body experience? That's how I felt hearing this for the first time. Just amazing.
How does he manage to still make it sound so true to the original?? It still has the exact same vibe that Carpenter's original version had yet I can plainly tell it's Reznor and Ross. This is gonna be an amazing film
There seem to be two types of comments. "I like it for what it is." "I dislike it for what it isn't" Don't let your expectations rob you of appreciation, my friends.
so great to hear this revival of synth giving it the respect it deserves. staying true to the original but giving it a face lift. The synth in this is amazing. on this the 4/20/20 for Halloween fans. the perfect song for the perfect day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr Lee Percussion David Gordon Green has been commissioned to do a Halloween film with Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role for a final confrontation. Normally I would consider it a bad idea but this song gives me too many happy feelings to not like the idea now.
I have been a Michael Myers/Halloween fan all of my life, and it makes me so excited to see things like this and the new Halloween being released next year. Myers is getting the credit he deserves all over again.

This is light years better than the recent Halloween score. I feel like they keep watering down this movie. I’d love to see an arthouse experimental version of this movie that’s more dark and suspenseful. The latest movies just feel like an action comedy.
I was just chilling at home alone listening to a playlist. I zoned out for minute, came into the living room and this shit is playing. Very eerie feeling lol
Trent is pretty much the master of uneasy atmospheres and John Carpenter was the master of 80’s dark synth . Can’t think of a better combo
Jarrod Charlifue Carpenter's minimalist scores are painted all through Pretty Hate Machine, Something I could never have could serve with the original Halloween track as theme and variation.
Was the master? He still IS the master!
More than just dark synth, Big Trouble in Little China had some of that rock synth edge or whatever what you want to call it.

Amanda Christiansen I wondered if I was hearing that or not. You're definetly right.

Trent & Atticus should release a full album of horror movie theme covers. Just sayin.
Splendid idea
Interesting. They really fit that retro vibe of Halloween. I can do without the ending though
Damien Clark I love the ending
Yess great idea
Would love their take on the Suspiria theme, for example. Or Psycho!
