This one has loads of stunning moments in there. Yes, it’s popcorn movie. But if you are for Audio and Video, definitely grab this one.
Watched it on the biggest IMAX Screen on Earth in Germany and it was awsome. Day 1 for my Home Theater.

This movie is definitely a reference disc. Especially for sound. The bass literally pressurized my room.

All I could think while watching this was, aside from being mediocre, how amazing it was going to look in 3D, as the digitally rendered environments looked like were made specifically for a 3D conversion.. Much to my surprise (and dismay) I discovered that not only was it not getting a 3D blu-ray release, but it was never released in 3D at all. Very sad harbinger for the state of 3D
3d is unfortunately dead - 4k HDR killed it. Many movies look much better in 3d, there's no denying that. It has to be a very particular movie like Casablanca, the Artist, or Kurosawa's masterpieces to be better in 2D. Marvel and Star Wars are practically dead now.
I have to buy a new TV and replace my 3d TV which incidentally is a match for my OLED laptop and phone but can also do 3d...
Balanced force 12’s love this movie a watered down Armageddon but the sound is amazing still a great movie
Can't wait to pick this one up. Roland Emmerich definitely knows how to make a demo worthy disaster flick (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, etc.). Should be fun.
Movie was shit but it looked great.
I streamed it and I thought the dolby atmos mix was meh at best sounds like the physical disc is a lot better now I gotta go pick it up

Oh.....ive met Halle in person, been around alot of celebs in person and I have to say Halle looks better in real life than she does on tv....and she barely had on any make up at all when I met her. This was many years ago, but it was still very clear that she has a natural beauty that shines through with or without makeup. Maybe in the scenes you referenced, she wasnt wearing as much makeup 🤣🤣🤣🤣 😁😁
Maybe her skin looks great from all those "facials" she got...
Thank you for the specs review. IMO that if a 4K Movie is lacking in the story line, acting and special effects it ain't worth having it on Disc maybe Ok for streaming. I am a big believer in Disc over Streaming where it is a movie you will enjoy seeing more then once because of the story, acting, scenery or special effects (like 3D).

I really didn't like this movie when I saw it in the theater. And I like all of Emmerich's disaster movies. I wasn't planning on getting this movie, but after hearing these reviews think I will. But I'll prob wait till a $10 sale. Great review as always!
Another Roland Emrick movie that needs a 4K Blu Ray is Stargate. HDR would look great in the SGC and Abydos and the worm hole sequence would sound great in ether Dolby Atoms or DTS X, just moving though the tunnel and out across the star field would benefit from over head speakers. If MGM would ever release it on 4K or just keep the 1080p version on Prime Video of other streaming services out side the US is up to them. But with Stargate franchise including SG-1 Atlantis and Universe having a large fan base it would make sense to have a 4K release.

Yeah, i thought the movie was Good. Ppl read too much into Sci-Fi.. PQ - Sharp & Soft in places. But otherwise, Good. AQ - It's Killer!! Atmos really Rocks here. And the BASS will loosen nails in ur walls. Tight & Clean. Nicely, Done.. Stay Safe, Be Safe!!!!
I liked this movie,very creative ending,thought it lags a bit in the middle somewhat but overall an excellent movie and enjoyed it!!The guy from game of thrones was great in it.

Love this review format, especially with the Trinnov visualizations. It would be really cool to add to that with the BEQDesigner spectrograms and graphs. I also really enjoyed the summary "If you have a home theater setup that's got any balls."

I have a high end system and use of height speakers was not pronounced...overhead explosions? Really? Matrix was 100x better with overhead use.
Still nice bass that did rumble my house, scene with AI was great though! Voices panning all over.

Great review. I was worried you were going to pass on this one, since you're normally way early. What subs were you using for the review? The reference Rythmiks, or some subs in review?
I thought the movie looked soft and the CGI looked so fake. Especially an early scene where the lead actor gets on a motorcycle. The sound mix was outstanding. Halle Berry looked so waxy. 8.6 for video is way too high. Maybe an 8. Maybe

How does the that scene help one know that their system is timbre matched?
Are the 2 voices supposed to be identical to each other and coming from the same person?
And if it even passes the above questions I ask, how do we know that the sound mixer didn’t alter one of the two voices post production for any added effect or to make it different sounding….
I have identical speakers everywhere. I can tell the voices are exactly the same.

I watched a Blu-ray rental in Atmos. Sound was quite good with very strong deep bass. When you talked about some scenes with great sound effect, I didn't recall seeing those scenes. Why? I fell asleep most of the time even with many loud bangs and explosions. I sometimes buy a mediocre 4k for just the high audio and video quality. But not this one. Although the sound is great, the movie doesn't do anything for me. Thanks for the good review as always.

Watching the Netflix Marvel shows on Disney plus on my Sony tv, looks like they added 4K for daredevil with Dolby vision not sure if it’s true 4K to me does look sharper.
I watched this stupid but fun movie last night and noticed the mix was crazy LOL! I know you've ran a bunch of different speakers in your HT but have you have tried JBL Synthesis? Anything from floor standing 4349 or the in-wall SCL-2, 3, 4 and/or SCL-6, 7, 8?
They shot the movie using the DNA LF lenses which are specifically designed to give softness to movies shot digitally... It avoided having to scan the movie in 35mm film and back to digital like they did with Dune....

Something weird I noticed on this movie. If your watching on an lg tv regular cinema is brighter than cinema home. Usually it's the other way around.
I come straight to your videos to see what you audio score you give to the movies I’m most interested in. You’ve been spot on! I love the Sparechage DW tag at the top right corner too. I was thinking maybe you could have a website with a list of the movies you’ve scored the highest in audio.
The disc is almost 87GB, that should tell you how good it is (not the movie itself though).
Can’t find it here in the uk it’s only available in blu-ray / standard DVD

Shane I'm converting a small bedroom into a mini dedicated HT room measuring 12x12x9.
I'm able to do atmos, but only 2 height channels is all I can squeeze in the ceiling. Will I be able to get good sound effects still vs. Going with 4 atmos speakers?
you should be good, but I would set the 2 height channels for the middle instead of front height configuration. I experimented with both and found having middle heights being more active than front heights.

it's schlock, if you like that sort of thing with the lower IQ, I think you'll enjoy it.
If the audio is reference like that then I look forward to picking up the disc when it's a bit cheaper. In the meantime however, the movie is available this week on VUDU in DV/Atmos for about a third of the price.
No...not reference at all... use of heights was WEAK.. bass was epic, surround was epic ..still a 90% in my book
I watched this movie today really enjoyed it on Amazon Prime. Fun movie. Can't wait to have in Atmos and 4k I ordered after watching the movie.
