Frigging loved this movie. Looked great. Atmos track was really active. Lack of bass didn’t bother me at all. It was shaking my house and my wife made me turn the bass down.

Hadn’t seen it since it came out and wow that was a different experience with a home theater, Incredibly good sound for how old it is, very dynamic, great bass and channel separation, good score by John Williams, grainy as shit but it worked for me.
Nice one Shane. And, couldn't agree more, the great 3D post-conversion is my preferred way to watch it also. Like you, now, I need to get the Atmos mix off this version and do a re-mux with the 3D disc (my subs aren't so special so I guess I won't miss too much with the emasculated bass). Cheers.

How can we remux the Atmos with the low end of the 3D version? I know most people won't care about that super-low end but I love it when I can feel the room shake.
@@simonl2072 it means "finishing off" the digital effect and the overall look of the film...it's usually done in 2K resolution. Movies with DI done in 4K are shot digitally.
@@simonl2072 Most 35mm scanned film negatives before the advent of DI technology are true 4k. So if the film pre-dates the early 2000's then it's more likely to get a fresh 4k or higher scan.
@@garyharper2943 When I finally looked into it, it's actually really easy. As long as you have a Blu-ray drive for your computer, then a couple of pieces of (free!) software are all you need. Gravity was particularly superb this way...
I'm glad i can fix the 30hz drop off with the beq sub program so it can still reach the lowest notes. Go check it out its really worth it. Bass EQ for Filtered Movies
War of the worlds was so heavily filtered that even BEQ couldn't recover the lower frequencies. I hope it is able to do a better job of recovering them here. I have the 3D version and can't wait to mux the Atmos mix with BEQ.
Thanks for keeping the audio score the same as your reviews for the VUDU and Kscape versions. I'm sure it's the same Atmos mix those services have been using all these years, only now it's lossless instead of DD+. Those opening few seconds on the DTS track were nothing more than a subwoofer stress test. Those tones don't sound again anywhere else in the movie, and have no story element associated with them. It's proper that they are attenuated here, and may have even been a mixing mistake on the DTS track.
Watched this on my Sony HT-A9 and *WOW* the 360 spacial sound bubble was amazing. So much height effects and super deep bass. My little subwoofer was shaking and my living room vibrating from it.

I did what you said about muxing the blu ray DTS master track into the 4k version and toggled back and fourth in the opening scene and there is a big difference in low end my system only goes down to about 17hz nothiong crazy no single digits but much deeper on the DTS master
That's as much James Cameron's call as Disney's. He's so busy with his damn Avatar films, you may never see it in 4k. Neither that nor The Abyss or True Lies.

Just picked this up, but haven't watched it yet (few more days). I think I'll be OK with the bass adjustment from 7.1 since it's really only the beginning 15 seconds or so that's impacted (or so I've been told). I've got a couple SVS PB2000's, so I'm hoping they're up to the task.
Shane, when you say it cuts off at 30hz, do you mean just the opening scene or the entire movie? Also is the Atmos on par with Vudu and Kaleidescape? All that matters is the physical disc is on par with all other options (other than the 10 second opening scene that I can still use my BR for demos) Thx for another great review
Man, I was holding off watching this review till I received my steel copy today, Man, I was disappointed. Where is that bass? My DTS track on my 3D bluray will shake the entire house, in comparison, this one is so soft and immediately threw me off. Disappointed!

I'm running Epson 6050 at 150" in fully light controlled room with Atmos. I want to own a physical copy. Do I get 4K or 3D version? Wish they had a version that included both.
Shane i got Heat 4k in iTunes store the sound said SDH what ever that means BUT Ó BOY it is the very best 5.1 i have ever heard i bád to dodhéanta bullets very crisp down to the leather shoes as if they were in the room as I said the very best
I noticed the transfer on VUDU was too dark, I don't think it benefitted from HDR. The 4K transfer does have better resolution than the regular blu ray but I still prefer the brightness on the 1080P copy. The DTS Master sound mix still rocks on the regular blu ray, so I don't think upgrade is necessary.

I have only seen the BR option and the DTS sound track is amazing (I am a huge DTS supporter, DTS:X would have been my dream) but I think this movie could benefit from good height channels, which it appears to have some successfully. Atmos will never dig like a DTS track, and I don't even know if the original went below 30hz other than the opening scene. My concern would be if the original consistently went below 30hz and that was eliminated from the movie all together. I can adjust my subs to make up for the downgrade from DTS to Dolby but frequency is what it is and missing key frequencies would be a shame
That has NOTHING to do with the format and everything to do with the engineers doing the mix. They're making these mixes soundbar friendly and ruining the experience for everyone else.

@@wadimek116 I have DaVinci Resolve Studio that is capable of Dolby Atmos mixing on the Fairlight tab. Yes, Atmos is full frequency. It all depends on who is mixing and mastering the Atmos track and how dynamic they want the mix to be. DTS: X can be screwed up too and I've heard mixes without deep bass as well. Too many mixes are now being optimized for lesser sound bars and TV speakers, which cannot handle the range of a high end audio system.

Shane! Do you have Auro 3D? As I watch your reviews, I keep thinking to myself how much you'd love the Auromatic upmixer. I watched this movie today and did my first comparison of Auromatic vs. Atmos. I turned off all speakers (subs included) except for my 4 height speakers. I then watched the end Louvre scene to compare how much action was going on in those upper speakers. Bottom line... I couldn't believe how much more active the Auromatic was. It seemed like there was constant sound in the height speakers. There was basically never a second of silence. The Atmos track however had way less activity, coupled with long moments of silence. And sometimes the sound that was coming out of the upper speakers was just music, as opposed to the gunfire and mayhem that the Auromatic projected. The Atmos mix wasn't bad, but now that I've experienced Auro 3D and the Auromatic upmixer, pretty much all Atmos tracks are a disappointment to me. In my opinion, if I spent all that time and money to put up height speakers, I definitely want the most engaging sound coming out of them, and Auromatic does just that. It's just way more immersive and I highly recommend it. I truly believe you'll love it too, especially if you do a direct A/B comparison like I did. But anyway, keep up the great reviews!
Auro is basically an extension of the lower surround channels. Like a Hall DSP you could find on older receivers and still on Yamaha receivers. You'll get constant sound as long as there is something in the surrounds. I don't find it the most natural so I don't use it.
Have there been any cases where a 4K blu-ray came out of some film and then soon after they stopped producing it? I am worried this will happen with edge of tomorrow because it's not even out yet and it's already more expensive than any other 4k blu ray that isnt out or has just came out. I fear it's because they're in limited supply.. On one hand I want to just buy it at this expensive price because I've been waiting for this release for years but I'd be annoyed if the supply is fine and it's at a much more reasonable price soon after release.

Just watched this yesterday. The last 1/4 of the movie is simply too dark. Given that this is the long-awaited 4K version of the movie, it was disappointing that they did not deliver a better job for the last part of the movie. The 2014 Blu-Ray did a better job of allowing the viewer to actually SEE what was going on in the scenes presented in the last 40 minutes or so of the movie. The 4K version, on the other hand was so dark, it became a distraction.
@@bigben9056 It's not the TV. Practically all of my 4K UHD disks display quite well on my Panasonic DP-UB820 player and Sony Bravia XR A90J OLED screen. The point that I am making is that although Edge of Tomorrow's 4K UHD disk is largely an improvement compared to the 2014 Blu-Ray, Warner Brothers (WB) clearly did not finish the job. More specifically, the application of HDR10 underwhelms and, quite honestly, underperforms during the section of the movie spanning between approx 1 hr 30 minutes and 1 hr 42 minutes. The original 2014 Blu-Ray actually displays better during this time segment. So, two lessons learned here. First, WB could have spent more time and work here to improve the quality of the image. Secondly (a source of frustration): although the 4K UHD disk comes with a Digital Movie Code that can be redeemed at VUDU with Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos, that defeats the purpose of purchasing a 4K disk in the first place! And, in this case, the frustration is compounded by the fact that the best video representation of this movie is in Dolby Vision. I compared the quality of the image on VUDU with Dolby Vision to the original 2014 Blu-Ray and the 4K UHD disk with HDR10 ... and Dolby Vision was the clear winner.
I definitely didn’t notice anything being too dark. The last act of the movie occurs at night, so how bright do you think it’s supposed to be? I’m watching on an LG GX.
I have a projector, and with a well capable device this looks great. On the Epson 5040 it would be unwatchable, but its better with the 6050 Epson, and fantastic on the LS12000 projector.

I think overall Bass performance is still better in DTS-HD MA 7.1. Atmos has better 3D sound placement.
I believe the whole movie is neutered at 30 not just the start of the movie.

I have the standard Blu-Ray with DTS-HD track. So you are saying that track goes lower?
Yeah, I have the 3D blu ray. The DTS track goes much much lower than this 4k release.

Yes
However, lossy Dolby Atmos is technically not as good as the lossless version when it comes to object encoding.

Just watched this yesterday. The last 1/4 of the movie is simply too dark. Given that this is the long-awaited 4K version of the movie, it was disappointing that they did not deliver a better job for the last part of the movie. The 2014 Blu-Ray did a better job of allowing the viewer to actually SEE what was going on in the scenes presented in the last 40 minutes or so of the movie. The 4K version, on the other hand was so dark, it became a distraction.

@@bigben9056 It's not the TV. Practically all of my 4K UHD disks display quite well on my Panasonic DP-UB820 player and Sony Bravia XR A90J OLED screen. The point that I am making is that although Edge of Tomorrow's 4K UHD disk is largely an improvement compared to the 2014 Blu-Ray, Warner Brothers (WB) clearly did not finish the job. More specifically, the application of HDR10 underwhelms and, quite honestly, underperforms during the section of the movie spanning between approx 1 hr 30 minutes and 1 hr 42 minutes. The original 2014 Blu-Ray actually displays better during this time segment. So, two lessons learned here. First, WB could have spent more time and work here to improve the quality of the image. Secondly (a source of frustration): although the 4K UHD disk comes with a Digital Movie Code that can be redeemed at VUDU with Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos, that defeats the purpose of purchasing a 4K disk in the first place! And, in this case, the frustration is compounded by the fact that the best video representation of this movie is in Dolby Vision. I compared the quality of the image on VUDU with Dolby Vision to the original 2014 Blu-Ray and the 4K UHD disk with HDR10 ... and Dolby Vision was the clear winner.
I definitely didn’t notice anything being too dark. The last act of the movie occurs at night, so how bright do you think it’s supposed to be? I’m watching on an LG GX.
I have a projector, and with a well capable device this looks great. On the Epson 5040 it would be unwatchable, but its better with the 6050 Epson, and fantastic on the LS12000 projector.
I can't wait to get my copy. I am sure it will be one my most watched discs.
