I liked this movie. Sounded good in theater. I’ve seen the streaming version and it looks and sounds good. I would rank Last Cursade, Lost Ark, Dial of Destiny, Crystal Skull and Then Temple of Doom. In 1984 I went to Japan and I saw the movie poster in the theater. I asked Management if I could have it since it was last day of showing. It’s been hanging on my wall ever since.
In my opinion, they rank in release order. Last Crusade is when it turned into a paint by numbers series, and started becoming less original. I love them all, but I disagree with your ranking.
Temple of doom is the 2nd best then last crusade.the other 2 never happened to me.
I was surprised how much I didn’t hate it; after hearing all the crap talked on it. I am looking forward to owning to rewatch again. Agree with your ranking; but I generally rank Ark first.
I liked this least of all the movies, but still enjoyed it. Feel it was a little unfairly prejudged preventing people from enjoying it. It certainly could have been better, but still entertaining.

Great review , I'm a indiana jones fan so I picked this up on Amazon , perhaps it will be better on disc .
I liked this one quite a bit. I definitely want to pick up the 4k disc when it comes out. I feel about it the same way I did when I walked out of Last Crusade on opening day: I liked the story, but the action was just okay. So it's about on par with Last Crusade for me.
I saw this back in June at a nice Atmos theater (my normal viewing theater) with 8 subs. The low end was not what I expected but did sound good. This film sound was done at Skywalker Ranch I recall correctly.
Definitely not your typical Disney Atmos mix. Plenty of overheads and bass was quite deep and impactful. Very enjoyable.
I guess my Trinnov was misreading the audio coming from the overheads.
Opening 20 minutes has plenty of overhead activity.
Definitely excited to see this for the first time and pick it up on disc! Hopefully they’ll have a release date for it soon.
If I was the director, I'd insist that the height channels are used properly and ensure the mix is dynamic at all times... *especially* during the big action scenes. Not sure why the studio thinks this is the best use of a Dolby Atmos mix in their big blockbusters.
Gene with Audioholics has a video on this. The studios have a small budget and time allowance for mixing unfortunately. And a lack of good engineering techs. Most people do not have an Atmos sound system so there's not allot of attention placed on Atmos sound. It's a niche market.
I think most directors want a dynamic mix but it depends on how it translates from mix to final file

thanks for the good review. i watched this on 4k uhd bluray last night.. you are right, the atmos is mostly not spectacular enough and the bass is too feeble, but there are some nice surround sound touches in there too. I expected better atmos but enjoyed the overall 4k bluray and I like the film in itself too. I like your in depth audio/video details in the review. i have now subscribed to your channel. regards, Roland.

A great film. I hope more people discover it. Third best Indy film after Crusade and Raiders.

And why are they keeping fans in suspense about a physical media release date? They’re being very unpredictable on the media front. (IE: ending disc sales in Australia, but doing steel books for some streaming shows)
It’s looking like a trend for non marvel Disney movies to announce the physical date a while after the digital has already released. Avatar 2 was released on physical 4 months after its digital

I’m done! Went back to basics, from 5.1.2 to 5.1 where it all started. Couldn’t be any happier. I am using an Onkyo nr696 which still displays dolby atmos for most movies, there must be some processing going on, but it sounds great. Over 25 years spent chasing perfection and the latest and greatest. I didn’t even enjoy a movie anymore spending every minute tweaking. Let’s just enjoy the moment for once.

Worth it for Kaleidescape or ATV4K
Unfortunately, we know Disney is going to cheap out and do 66GB disc and no DV either. It’s a shame, because the first four were treated so well by Paramount for the 4K BR release. I only got to see it once in cinemas, but I had a lot of fun. The opening scene would have been perfect if not for some of the dodgy CG face moments. It’s shame this didn’t get the audience hoped for. Not a patch on the original three, but a better send-off than Skull.
Hmm, I wonder if there is a bug with the audio transfer. Doesn't make sense that there was hardly NO ATMOS during action scenes. I wonder if KScape can call Disney and find out if that was truly the intention. Shane, would you be willing to review the UHD disc when it comes out and verify if it does the same?
There's never been a case where kaleidescape and the digital stream had a different mix than disc.
Yeah even in Dolby theaters felt like the missile drop and the cave were the only loud distinct atmos scenes sad. Wish I liked the movie more.. probably going to get it to complete the collection tho.
The huge gun on the train was decent too.

I really didn't expect the sound to blow me away. The audio wasn't that impressive in theaters despite it having Atmos. I think the film makers did a good job with the look of the movie. As far as the effects de-aging it's looks even more obvious 4K digital than in the Cinema. I think the studio could have just altered Harrison Ford's facial features in close ups. I don't think he looks all that different from forty years ago.
Shane why don't studios use Dolby mixes in their movies? Also I M thinking about going non doby in my theater and running all speakers which I have done and I think sounds better then Dolby imo. What are your thoughts

That's too bad about the audio. I saw it at Dolby Cinema and it was very aggressive but the bass was lacking. Too bad Disney didn't port that over to home video releases. As for the movie, it's better than the 2nd and 4th one, so I'd rank it as the third best in the series.

That movie was VERY dark.
5:50 - That was a clean dialog replacement there. 295 Thousand to 295 Million. Sounded robotic though.
I would suggest replace the whole sentence in such cases.
The basses are pg13.

I am disappointed that they didn’t bother to make this the best of the franchise and it is a shame that they dared to put the logo Dolby Atmos on it while the sound effect is mediocre. I feel bad for Harrison Ford who is one of my all time favorite stars.

You should really review the 4k Blu-ray release. It’s far above the streaming release and really worth buying it, if you liked the movie, which is my case. For me, it is the first good 4k Blu-ray release from Disney.

I also haven't seen the film and am waiting for the uhd blu-ray disk to be my first viewing due to the highest quality publicly available outside of the Kaleidescape

Just another example of films not really using Atmos much. So many movies with Atmos tracks just to put the stamp on it and then do nothing significant with it.
It's a shame that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull soured people on any more movies, of course the mediocre ads didn't help... But I thought this was actually a great movie and a good sendoff for Indy. Not as good as Last Crusade of course, but that was already negated as an end by KOTCS.
Strange take... Kingdom of Crystal skull wasn't great, but it isn't the reason for Dial of Dysentery tanking. Disney are to blame for that. Crystal Skull I can at least watch again and again.
There are only three Indiana Jones films.

This is very disappointing. I know for a fact that the sound mixers went ballistic with the object oriented mixing. Disney is making object oriented sound useless for their streaming platform.
It looks a rubbish film , but I've got the others so I have to buy it , I'll wait until I get it cheap.
To me It looked like the vignetting was added in the color grading and not by the lenses… looked a bit artificial and distracting at times and not organic…
To me it ranks lowest… too long, too boring, too clean… even more so than crystal skull…
Yeah, no thanks, I skipped out on seeing this in the movie theaters and it will be an even easier decision for me to never add this to my 4K collection.

Another huge budget, iconic franchise IP, and yet another disappointing Atmos mix. I’m so sick of this and is seeming to become a trend. They are really cutting corners on Atmos when we should be in the golden age and get the best Atmos mixes are usually from movies that came out between 2015-2020. They have GOT to fix this.
shame.... you think at least focus on sound effects #1priority considering what a Total Disaster Flop it was.....and film is still yet to break even...🤔.hmmm i wonder why😢
