I give props to Hocus Pocus for casting actual teenagers and making them look like teenagers.
Shows like riverdale made 40 year olds play high schoolers
wish more things would do that, it can be offputting when you get someone in their 30's playing high school peter parker in a spiderman film, but then you also get someone like will ferrell playing somoene in their 40's sometimes and you're like, uhhh, he's a fair bit older than that
@@callethecookie2235 the actors were like 20 and considering the teens in the show were having sex and wearing lingerie I'm happy it casted adults instead of minors. Could you imagine them making minors ware lingerie and pretend to have sex?

Can't believe you skipped over Billy the zombie, Winnie's ex who was resurrected by the witches but then decided to help the kids. He was the best character in the movie.
Played by my favorite creature actor he awesome
And he only had a few lines.
Yes, he was played by Doug Jones, who spends most of his acting roles under heavy prosthetics, and was the Amphibian in "The Shape of Water."
I was like OAH someone didn't wanna talk about the third act at all.
i loved when he cut open his lips and sh1t on winnifred.
This is the most metal movie ever released under the Disney umbrella. It literally opens with a child murder, and the Sanderson sisters get so excited 'cause they think the guy in the Satan costume is actually him. Then one of them mentions her stay in the underworld. Like, I'm so amazed that Disney greenlit all this.
And yet so glad they did! 😁
It's just a flash but we see Emily's corpse, and she is about a mummy. but damn, i love the bus driver; he is flirty with each of the sisters and he looks like they'd have a good time not killing kids! and the costumed devil was hilarious (and how his wife chased the witches out!)
The Sanderson Sisters are the best part of this entire movie, you could tell that the actresses were having an absolute blast. I was always rooting for the witches to win, since the kids, with the possible exception of Dani, were bland by comparison.

the reason the child was so calm in the beginning is due to the song sara sings. it puts them into a hypnotic state.

What blows my mind is that the actress who played the teacher (Kathleen Feeman) also played Sister Mary Stigmata (The Penguin) in Blues Brothers. She managed to encompass both poles of the child-care spectrum in her career.
Sarah was also a pivotal moment for young Lucy realising "oh yeah I'm definitely into girls" 😂

The reason burning them didn’t kill them is because of the black flame candle. It kept them alive until sunrise. The reason Winnie turned to stone was because she was on hallowed ground. Just an FYI for anyone confused

And she stayed a statue until the sun came up, on which event she turned to pixie dust or whatever Alex called it.

Early Disney movies were always dark, but this movie literally started with a little girl getting her life sucked out and was centered on killing kids, which is seriously messed up and dark yet it’s still a fun movie, that I can’t help but love it!
This is very true but as kid i don't think any f us were smart enough to notice any of that 😂
As a 13-year-old, I thought that was cool, and was impressed by it. I still kind of am.
Childs edia needs darkness too ad the scary things, because life is scary, its good preperatoion to have aproviate silly metaphorical cover of that scary stuff to give it form and adress them. Learn or prepare i tht hits, give narratives to deal with it.
Also it dlves nesseary way more iintointerpretatiove stuf and implied, adults have just seen and kno way more to imagine worse, and good family media knows what will fly over kids head,
The not noticing isnt about being smart, but kids just dont interpet the same way there. Bevcau they have seen less of life, dah

Idk if it was bc I grew up in a rural village but Halloween has always been safe for me. Never been mugged for my sweets. Definitely had the good ones nicked by siblings tho…
I didn't know that was a thing that happens anywhere outside of American tv, just like the whole "give me your lunch money" thing. Maybe it's just American teenagers? I thought it was a tv joke kind of thing, because teenagers here are nothing like depicted on tv.
i think it is just a tv thing because that never happened to me when i was a kid and i've never seen anyone get mugged for candy. everyone just went up to the houses in their groups and got their candy as usual lol. but we do trade candy with our siblings and friends. also maybe it could just be an older thing. no one when i was in highschool got bullied for lunch money or shoved in a locker but maybe that was the thing in the y2k era, 90s, 80s, etc. or its just for movie dramatic effect @@ShizuruNakatsu
This was hilarious from start to finish. You made it so hard for me to get a bowl of cereal without bustin out laughing and wakin up the whole house. 🤣
I'd always figured the reason Emily was sitting there so calmly in the chair the whole time was that she was still under that hypnotic spell that Sarah sang to lure her there. On that note, the witches' feet dangling didn't phase me much as a kid, but I did have a 'yikes' moment when I noticed that they show the dead girl slumped over in the chair.
Mmhmm!
But she totally fidgets when she's supposed to be "dead"! 😆
I didn’t even remember the beginning until rewatching it recently. Found it disturbing that we see them not only kill her, but THROW A BLANKET OVER HER when the town mob arrived 🤣🤣🤣

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the fact that the Sanderson Sisters COULD have won as Sarah had lured a bunch of children to their cottage. As a kid 95% of the adult jokes didn’t resonate with me because we weren’t overloaded with this kind of stuff like kids are now. As an adult now I think it’s hilarious. Pretty sure those jokes were for our parents who were forced to watch this a million times with us, but I appreciate them! Wish Disney was still like this honestly.

@@tcoi1872 think they meant in the movie she was the most known prettiest girl
Shes chill the entire time cuz shes a white witch its why she loves halloween so much and knows the history of the sandersons
I've seen this movie a thousand times and apart from Winnie calling Alison a white witch, there is literally no evidence to support that. It's literally just a fan theory.
She knows the history because its her home town and her mum worked at the museum.
The reason Allison was so chill was because she was a witch too. There was a follow up book where it was revealed that Allison was the descendant of a fourth Sanderson sister who refused to be evil like the rest of her family. Max and Allison's daughter was tricked into casting a spell that caused all the witches in Hell to trade places with mortals on Earth.
we read different sequels, then - paige or poppy or whatever their daughter's name was WASN'T the descended witch - it was the new girl who'd moved in (the one they turned into a dog for most of the book) - the better storyline would definitely have been that max and allison's daughter was a witch, since winifred makes the comment that allison is a "clever little white witch" for using the salt circle - i ranted a LOT after reading the sequel book and was highkey disappointed
i'm actually hoping the writers for the sequel movie make it so allison daughter's is a witch to bring the Sanderson Sisters back from the dead again, since it would make more sense.
Wait a minute. You guys are telling me THAT THERE ARE FREAKING BOOKS OUT THERE AND I NEVER KNEW ABOUT THAT 😭😭😭
@@christiane548 they novellized the Hocus Pocus movie and tacked on a sequel as well - there was a weird tone to the novellization of the Hocus Pocus movie in how they wrote Allison's character and twisted certain events to suit the sequel's narrative instead of just faithfully adapting it to novel form. I think the best explanation for this movie I’ve ever seen was in a Tumblr post speculating about what the actors were told during filming. Their theory was that Winnie’s actress was told: “This is camp, just do whatever you want,” Mary’s actress was told: “Your character is basically an evil golden retriever,” Sarah’s actress was told: “Just act like you’re on all the drugs,” and the kids were told that this was a very serious horror movie and they’d be in trouble if they didn’t treat it as such.
That makes way to much sense.

I was 12 when this came out, and I've watched it on Halloween ever since. :) It's the one scary movie I'd watch as a tradition. (I'm an overly sensitive person who hates to be scared, and when I was a kid, my sensitivity to horror was at 10,000%. For kid-me, this was a horror movie.)
It was an absolutely awesome part of that year for me. I loved it! As for knowing the words "OD'd," Yeah, we were kids in the 90's, and that kind of content was all over the media in the news and whatever, along with schools always telling you not to do drugs, so we learned that term early on. We were kids. Not completely morons. Morons, yes, but not *complete* morons. Anyway, I love this movie, and my 12th year was still one of the best years of my life to date for a few reasons, so yeah. My life went to hell after that for a good... years still going.
Allison wasn't phased by Dani, because a) she's a girl and b) she's not taking an 8 year old seriously, because kids come with zero filter.
Hey, the boob jokes were funny! That was classic humor back then. I remember laughing so hard I had to pee at the yabos joke. :D Everyone was also laughing at Madonna's ridiculous torpedo-tits bra in reality at that time. Since that was new-ish, that reference still landed.
As a kid, I didn't completely get that bus driver (yay for being Ace), but I did understand the very obvious innuendo. Now as an adult, that guy's got so much confidence he's bleeding swag. I still wouldn't go near him, though.
In my honest opinion, Disney peaked at made-for-t.v Halloween movies with this one. I've yet to see anything else they've made since come close to this. Halloween town was cringy AF, and nowhere near the level of Hocus Pocus.
This was a fun, creepy, spooky movie that had a storyline, a plot, no character was better than another, (I'm looking at you, Disney's girl-boss fever that makes me want to barf - and I'm a girl!)
The Hocus Pocus 2 movie they made had a few good parts (like the beginning scene - I'm terrified of spiders, and Mary's roombas, calling back to her being forced to use a vacuum as a broom. :D But 70% of that movie was Disney 2010's cheesy safe-for-the-kiddies, eye-squinting camp so bad you got second hand embarrassment for the actors.

It's kinda an American pop culture thing I guess, probably because Halloween used to be an excuse for teen delinquency a very long time ago. There's also kind of a nod to that as well during the beginning of The Crow too (and they attributed it to being called Devil's Night at one point).
Middle schoolers can be kind of try-hard and mean at times, but overwhelmingly, I think most normal teenagers mean well and just want to be treated with respect and kindness.
In retrospect, I get a kick out of how many movie bullies from the 80s and 90s dress like the sorts of people I'd tend to assume were bullying *victims,* and not perpetrators.

12:36.. I don't think they (more specifically the bus driver) were referring to *that* but moreso production of children.
And the reason I think this is because he says "it may take me a few tries" suggesting that he isnt very.. potent.
At the part you show around 14:50, Danny lies when she says she hasn't even had a piece of candy, as she clearly eats a lollipop at the hot girl's house towards the beginning of the film
I actually liked how they had the Sanderson sisters sort of become more familiar with modern-day culture as the movie progressed (aka, for instance realizing that people stopped believing in supernatural stuff, so when Max tried to call them out at the dance they just played along). Yeah, it was a stretch that they were able to pick up so many things in one night, but it meant it became harder and harder to fool them, which upped the tension in the climax.
Also, as anyone with a much younger sibling will probably tell you, they can embarrass you to no end in front of your peers. Just absolutely no filter whatsoever. That part of Dani they go so right that it easily made her the best non-Sanderson character.
I would think they would have some sort of magic doohicky in place that allowed them to quickly absorb and understand modern culture. If "the devil" gave them their power he could surely give them an update upgrade on society. Lmao
38 years later and I still embarrass my brother Infront of his friends.
If you think Dani was a good character, let alone the best, your opinion isn't one I trust. 😂 She was annoying as hell. A spoiled brat who whined constantly until she got her way. That is not a likable character.

Alison doesn’t react negatively to the discussion of her Yabbos because Alison, as depicted in the scene and throughout the movie, is suppose to be the mature, sophisticated, humble and understanding character. The prevalence of adult humor/scenarios in children's media (television and film) in the 90's and earlier probably had a great deal to do with the fact many homes that had televisions only had one and the whole family used it. So, children's shows and movies needed to have something for the adults to not wanna bash their heads into a wall while watching or even allow it to be played in the first place. Like you pointed out, a lot of these adult jokes & scenarios were just shrugged off by the kids. And, if your kid did understand them? You probably already had bigger problems~^.^
There is actually a 30 year study that came out in 2021 in regards to sex education and prevention of child abuse, healthy relationships, teen pregnancy etc. If the kid understands the jokes, that's not a bad thing. It seems that developmentally appropriate comprehensive education should start as early as kindergarten. So a 9-13 year old watching probably should get the jokes if they are educated. They might not understand certain euphemisms though until they are older or pick up on body/voice cue subtext.
So disagree that if the kid did understand them that it was a problem. I think people today just assume that puberty doesn't happen till 14 years or something.
That is very true
'90s, not "90's."
@@vixxcelacea2778 A researcher also said children develop sexual attraction at age 3. Don't trust them nowadays.
Kids knowing about adult content is a problem in 2022.
MAPS is capitalizing off of naive people like you teaching kids at a very early age, instead of letting them be kids, just because kids develop earlier than 14. They are already using your arguement to justify their sick movement. You also must be okay with child brides as well. They marry off children because of early development.
Children understanding innuendos wasn't a problem in the 90s, because groups like MAPS weren't allowed the exist. Since they do, they will use anything to try to legalize their behavior and allow them around children. It was a child predator that even say we much teach kids such, while still insisting he was a victim, and not the kids he almost assaulted.
The fact that anyone would be comfortable exposing teaching their kids about sexual content, when MAPS is growing is beyond me.
How so did they have bigger problems?
The reason why Emily is so calm in the beginning is because of some cut content from the movie. The witches would make 'candy crows' that would essentially brainwash the kid (if I remember that right) so that's why she's just sitting there.
All it would take is Sarah singing to lure them based of a later scene in the movie.
In that specific scene, Sarah states it herself. It isn't clear but even as a kid, a teenage kid at that point mind you, I got the idea.
@@ricks1570 Originally the candy crows were what allowed kids to be brainwashed by Sarah's song. There was quite a few scenes cut from the movie, one where they're in the grocery store getting ingredients for said crows, to another where the sisters push Winnie into the swimming pool.
I think those scenes can be found on youtube actually, they're definitely worth a watch :)
I figured they put the whammy on the kids, that's why they were so calm.
@@CraftyMaelyss The crows may be the original concept, and may have been cut. Even still, the theatrical release makes it clear that Sarah's song hypnotizes the children. Perhaps the concept was that the song only works if they'd been brainwashed by the crows, but they took out the extra step, and viewers are left with the impression that Sarah's song alone is what puts the children under a spell. I think they ended up with a cleaner, less convoluted result.
Didn't the kids zombie walking toward the witches later in the movie show why Emily seemed unfazed?

Allison was just the ultimate cool girl. Nothing can phase the cool girl, they just go with the flow.
Max being a virgin and lighting the candle, isn't really as big of a self-own, when you consider that Max didn't actually expect anything to happen.
This would have been a win/win for Max. If he lit the candle, and nothing happened, Allison would have to admit that he was right and magic wasn't real. Or, he could have played off the virgin aspect as the "reason" why it didn't work, thus looking cooler to Allison and letting her question her beliefs at the same time.
It really was a great setup for Max... Except, the candle actually worked.
In other words it was a self own 🤣
The candle owned him!
Great explanation! And it totally would’ve worked until the candle worked.
Max: "That did not go the way I expected...."
Wow.. for you to think like that just affirms that you like to manipulate people through different situations.
Must be awful knowing that no one will ever truly trust someone like you when they know that everything you do is a calculated investment in yourself. I guess selflessness is something you were never taught.

I love that movies centered around kids and teens in the 80's/90's were a lil edgy. it was more realistic because not all kids are angels. A lot of us did speak and act like the kids from the goonies/IT (the 2017 version). I think some adult jokes are added to make sure the parents who take their kids are not completely bored.
same!! I miss it!
Shows don't have to have sex jokes to be entertaining to adults. They just need good writing. If they are falling back on sex jokes, then they're being lazy and maybe creepy. There's certainly a lot of creeps working in jobs that involve children, so... I don't think that it's really warranted.

As a child of the 90's, none of this "adult" content hit home because we were a bit more innocent than kids today. We didn't have the internet at our finger tips. Or shows like Euphoria. I'm honestly glad I was able to grow up when I did. I had the opportunity to be a kid without the pressure of having to be up on the latest tik tok dance. I also never worried if my outfits were "hawt" enough for school.
Idk I think kids nowadays can talk to more people and find out which situations they are in are actually wrong and can find support and other people who relate to their problems. They also have more opportunity to learn various hobbies, which can really help kids find the right people to befriend and keep them out of trouble. I had zero role models growing up and since I both lived in a small town and my house didn't have cable either, I just was not connected to the world, so basically, I just grew up around a bunch of racists, etc, thinking that that was normal and not understanding that they were being bad people.
Same
Just about everyone wears a sweater, leggings or jeans, and crocs and slides to school. Trust me no one is worried about being “hawt” for school. Also you literally don’t have to learn a tik tok dance if you don’t want to. Literally nobody irl cares.
As a child of the 90s, I haven't heard anyone use the term "hawt" since 2006. But even so, that's more of a you thing. There's just as much or as little pressure on people to look a certain way in school, those who wanted to stand out as the "hawt" people, and those just doing their own thing/trying to blend in. I'd say it's nice to not have to worry about keeping up with the latest memes/trends/slang seeing as by like the second time you see or use it you'll have someone telling you that's old news, seeing as there's something new that "everyone" already knows about. I'm grateful to be old enough that when people ask me if I've seen this or that show/meme I can just make some dad-like grumbles about too much to do and naps and stuff.
@E K it depends on HOW You use it thought
Ok..this is the funniest commantary ever! 🤣🤣
I love hocus pocus!! I still watch it every year in Halloween! It’s a sibling tradition for me and my brother 😂
I wasn't allowed to watch this movie as I grew up in a conservative Christian home because witches, but honestly that should've been the least of my parents' worries when it comes to all the adult jokes.
I grew up in a conservative Christian home. And I watched it once when I was 10 with my mom, my 10 year old adoptive sister, and my 4 year adoptive brother. We weren't allowed to watch it again as kids. It had nothing to with the jokes or the witches. My mom thought it was the stupidest movie that she had ever seen. And she didn't want her kids watching something so dumb. Which was fine by me and my brother. Because we both thought the movie was stupid. My sister was the only one who actually liked the movie.
Bru my family is Christian and conservative, they had NO problem with me watching this, OK? I can sense the negative view of conservatives leaking from these comments...
To think it took Alex for me to realize half the adult jokes in this movie, particularly the bus driver one and children
@@ashleydowney1222 damn yall have dull taste. Must also be big Cringe-culturists (basically cancel culture but cringe is the word here)
So did I but I was allowed to watch pg or pg13 movies. My mom understood you can’t shield kids from most of the media that their peers are watching.
Are you positive they didnt just tell you it was the witches so they didnt have to explain why else it would be inappropriate?
With the whole “Them having no reaction.”, and Max’s logic with the black flame candle, I have my theories. For Alison having no reaction, the first case is in school when Max gives her his number, and it’s obvious she didn’t want to make a big deal of it and make the public interaction more embarrassing. And after school, similar story. At her party, with Dani’s comment, I think a similar thing too. She didn’t want to make a scene in her house, during a party, and in front of Dani. So she went with it, and moved on. (Also small rant, but I LOVE how Alison acts like a big sister towards Dani. Constantly watching her, holding on to her, and talking with her. They just met that day, and her and her brother aren’t even in a official relationship until later in the movie/after the movie, and the two already act like sisters.) But the more upsetting theory, is that Alison is just used to dumb comments. She is the pretty and smart rich girl, who stands out in class, loves mysterious Halloween, her Mom ran the famous Sanderson Sisters’ House Museum, she has a big party every year, she seems very social and popular. She probably has a lot of boys crushing on her, and with that, has heard a fair share of rude and dumb things that she had just learned to deal with. Even after Max gives her his number, a random guy basically tells him there’s no chance. He seems like he was in Max’s place once, and made similar embarrassing moves. And now feels the need to speak on her behalf. And for the actual Hocus Pocus stuff, the three of them, and later four of them, are actually all always scared and having big reactions when it comes to jump scares and the witches doing stuff to them. The only time they don’t have a BIG reaction I guess is when they all hear Binx talk for the first time. But at that point, Max had already heard Binx talk and had his big reaction, and for Dani and Alison, after all they saw and experienced already, hearing the random cat Max has had them follow talk is probably not that shocking. Especially since he seemed to be helping them. Especially for Alison. She knows and believes in (At least to our knowledge, because she also says “So the legends are true.”, as if she had doubts.) in Thackeray Binx and the story. She’s the one that recognizes him. So she probably would suspect him to talk more than anyone. And finally for Max’s black flame candle plan, he didn’t believe in the candle. So he thought no matter who lit the candle, nothing would happen. But to the best of his knowledge, Alison believed something would happen if someone lit the candle. And she knew that the person prophesied to bring the witches back would be a virgin. So he thought by lighting the candle, nothing would happen, cause it’s fake. But to Alison, who thinks something would happen, and seeing it didn’t, would realize he wasn’t the prophesied virgin, and that would someone make Max cooler. Cause it was never that it had to be a virgin who brought the witches back, it could be anyone, but it was prophesied that it would be a virgin. That was the only characteristic (if you can call it that) of the candle lighter. But those are just my theories and interpretations. I love this movie and couldn’t help but rant.
Love your "rant"! Makes me excited to rewatch the movie this spooky szn!!

Not sure I can tell you ‘why’ people let their kids watch Hocus Pocus.
What I can tell you is that it’s those kids that did watch it, myself included, that turned it into such a beloved and fondly remembered movie.
Because everything in this movie is perfect, nothing is made “for kids” and so we didn’t feel patronised and talked down to.
Well put
I agree!
Yes! Thank you! It was a good story. We were taken seriously as viewers. It trusted that kids were intelligent enough to figure it out and enjoy it. And we did. :)
Exactly 🎉 the sequel absolutely sucks - so political correct that i wont let my kids watch it.
That's because it wasn't a kids' movie. It was just a movie that people of all ages watched. What popular movies do you think, "talk down," to kids? What do you mean by talking down? You know, children AREN'T adults. They have neither the life experience nor the brain development of adults, which is why we don't just let them run "amuck, amuck, amuck!" They don't make good decisions. They are extremely susceptible to peer pressure, etc., esp. as teens.
I love Hocus Pocus, it's just perfect camp. The Sanderson Sisters, Allison and even young Dani are fabulous female characters. It's one of my go to Halloween watch-fests. Love your vid and animation!
you should watch 90's Italian children television production 'princess Fantagiro'... it took great emphasis in raising the experience of dad's having to watch children's television.
That’s the beauty of the 90s kids movies, kids didn’t get the adult jokes and adults could bear the movie enough to bring their kids to see it
I actually think this movie is a very clever way to scare kids and make them aware of dangerous predators through a fictional and magical story. I loved the movie back in the day and I still do now. There is a lot of realism behind it in my opinion. The kids aren't supposed to fully understand the sexual jokes but they will get the terrifying message of 3 people hunting down kids to cause them harm. I also find it interesting that the 3 dangerous people in question are portrayed by women (which you are more likely to trust as a kid) showing that a potential predator could be anybody.
Yea right. It's because they did horrible things to kids that's the Disney way.

This is one of my favorite movies. I watch it all year round and at least 20 times in the fall. Absolutely love it! I even own the book 😁 what makes this movie work is the chemistry between the Sanderson sisters. They’re so funny and cooky. Honestly you’re right, Winnie is a queen. Also the ambiance of the movie is just full Halloween! It’s what I wish Halloween looked like everywhere.

He means that back then being single and over 25 would definitely get you accused of being a witch.
Like you couldn't just be single and enjoy life back then without being called a freak of nature .
He means in ye olden times. I don't know whose calling women over 25 witches in 2022...

@@depressantdrug women over 25 are witches

I grew up in an extremely prudish Catholic Ireland in the early 2000s. When Hocus Pocus would be on our local TV station RTE as "The Big Big Movie", the more adult moments were edited out. (One of them being the scene where the witches got hanged) This meant the first time I properly watched the film in full was as a teenager when I bought the dvd 😅
My kids watched this movie. They are now in their 30's and 40's and still watch it every year as do I. Frankly I was more scared than the kids back then. Took me awhile to get use to the guy who came out of the grave. The script, actors and their characters, acting, special effects and music are great. The Disney cartoon movie that did scare me when I was a child was the story of Ichabod Crane...the Headless Horseman...it was a cartoon.
You forgot the part where Allison is also a witch. She manipulated Max and every event to resurrect the Sanderson sisters so they'd awaken the Book. Then she'd have to last until morning to destroy the sisters and gain possession of the magic within its pages. Winnie even recognizes Allison for what she is, and at one point calls her a "clever little white witch."
lol Allison is not a witch

I'm torn between your point of view, that was how I'd always looked at it, and a new idea that Disney was always trying to sexualize children since at least the 1990's. I don't know but they sure seem to be pushing every type of sexual agenda now.
I think the one tv is really valid point. It explains a lot and it shows what's missing in some movies today.
This is EXACTLY how I viewed it. I don’t think anyone is a bad character in the entire movie. Not the parents (nor any adult) not the teenagers (they seemed like maybe slightly mature kids? But were still kids) and not even the witches. Everyone has motivations, it was scary enough but fun, had a happy ending, and everyone learned from it. Also the adult jokes were fun, they were a little kitschy but were fine.

The best part about the sequel is the football bro boyfriend. He has some great lines and is genuinely funny. There was some nostalgia, but mostly felt stale in comparison to the first. And I think a lot of people rolled their eyes at the “villain origin backstory” angle that Disney seems to like these days.
