One of the most annoying things about this is the fact that they did the whole thing with the teacher being Hyde's son even though there was already Holt Hyde, a character who was a descendant of Hyde.
They ruined literally every character with this movie.. the $2 outfits and the complete personality changes.. they ruined my girls 😭

Also, I’m pretty sure they made Lagoona single and Spanish. Their new outfits look like they took regular and boring clothes, then just added lazy designs relating to their monster. They removed Draculaura’s accents, and I could go on and on, but I’m feeling tired right now so I won’t.

its crazy to me that they managed more character development in the original 2 minute webisodes than they could accomplish in a full movie. the scene with the songs Scars in the 20 minute special New Ghoul @ School was so iconic.
the characters changing i can deal with, it's weird because the og characters were so cool, cleo and duece were very jade and bec from victorious vibes. but the lack of heart and depth is what gets me about this movie. theres just no substance?

My complaint about the movie is the fact that the show was already inclusive from the getgo. I mean, there were all sorts of characters! There were tons of different races. There was a Romanian, a Russian, an Aussie, an Egyptian, a Mexican (the skull girl), and an Asian too! Not to mention they had all sorts of monsters! Tons and tons of werewolves, vampires, goblins, deuce, whatever heath is, Jackson Jekyll, Holt Hyde, a centaur, a zombie pony hybrid boy, a ghost mermaid, a spider chick, a dude with huge ears-. the point is there are an incredibly large amount of people on the school. Monster high was about inclusivity, being who you are, embracing your flaws, and accepting everyone around you despite their differences. This movie went against the entire concept of the original series. Everyone sounds the same. There’s nothing inclusive about the movie anymore except Frankie-who isn’t the new “girl “ ((in the original she went by she/her)) who’s trying to fit in (the whole point of the monster high webisodes)- who now goes by they/them. This movie has such good potential if they could at least keep their designs and backstories remotely similar instead of changing the whole concept of monster high and its lore. Anyway you guys can hate on me back for my commentary if you want to I just needed to complain about my childhood being destructed. I’m gonna watch Monster high: Ghouls rule :)
Why have Clawdeen be the new girl at school? That was quite literally Frankie's story. Freshly created high school student utterly new to pretty much everything around her. Using Hyde, or rather Holt Hyde-Knock Off, as the villain as well is another baffling choice consider Clawdeen's whole "am I human or am I monster" thing was HIS story. He was the great grandson- not son- of Dr. Jekyll/ Hyde and had a more timid human counterpart named Jackson that actually had a full story arc in one of the animated films because he felt so out of place over at Monster High as neither him nor Holt had control over who was out. In fact, Holt and Frankie actually become a couple! Why absolutely butcher a lore thats perfectly laid out, there's more than enough material that you don't need to utterly rearrange the entire universe.
I was never rlly sure about this but I wonder if holt and jackson were an allegory for a system or for a biracial person

Well she was outright mean to people in early seasons but it was pretty clear it was her insecurities from her family. She definitely matured though after she realized no one was after her in the friend group, and defended several characters +supported them in her own way
Honestly Cleo in the original show was definitely a mean girl but still had a soft spot for her main group of friends(Clawdeen, Frankie, Ghoula, Dracula). But she did have way more depth in the movies. Obviously they took a very interesting character to turned her into a sassy girl with no depth.

the most ironic thing about this is how adamant the school is about “all humans are bad, they suck, only true monsters” because in the popular cartoon series the school was made for inclusivity, and there are human presenting people in that show, and the main characters even dance and have fun with the humans in fact they had a movie about connecting with humans and “not worrying about differences” how did they manage to completely leave the original subject matter behind so well, it’s a bit crazy

The thing that pisses me off most about this movie is the idea that monsters hate humans. In the original, Monster High (the school) was a place of inclusivity for everyone, human or monster. They even had a Jeckyll/Hyde character: Jackson Jeckyll, who was a timid little human guy who didn't feel accepted at MH, and Holt Hyde, who was excited and fun about being there, but they had an arc about accepting themselves and learning that, no matter who they are, Monster High welcomes all into its walls. Nearly every student there was also taught that wheather you're monster or normie (the original MH term for humans), you will be accepted, "Freaky flaws and all"
I'm nearly 18 now, but I grew up watching MH. It was the only reason I ever learned to accept myself for who I am, and to never discriminate against others for what they look like or what they can/can't do. This series meant so much to me, taught me so many lessons that are still a deep part of my personality today. These bastards ruined it.

I loved Monster High growing up. I’m the movie “Boo York Boo York”, it was revealed that Monster High and Ever After High were in the same universe, and that show was another huge part of my childhood. I was so excited when I saw that, and I wish they did more than just give us a revelation and forget about it. I can’t even watch this movie without wanting to punch someone, they really screwed up.

I get that Cleo and Clawdeen did not get along in the OG series, but they were both popular and fearleaders so why make Cleo the mean girl? Yes she has always been superior but still, she hated Frankie due to bumping into Cleo on Frankie's first day and saying Deuce was her boyfriend.

Hi Hello. 19 yo here who grew up with, and was honestly a bit obsessed with Monster High as a child. I can't tell if my constant laughter while watching this was out of pain or embarrassment I can't tell which. Seeing what they did to Cleo and Deuce is tragic.
What shocked me the most was the fact that they wrote Chloe and Lagoona to be best friends. It makes no sense.
Yes lagoona has always been her own self just like Cleo like they always had her own mini story in the movies that was different then the main one

I have to give one thing to the creators. It's rare to see a reboot that this perfectly eliminates every ounce of what made the original series into what it was. It takes talent to be able to destroy nostalgia to the very last bit.

If I can remember correctly, from one of the movies (ghouls rule?), the monsters & humans didn’t like each other (playing pranks on each other’s schools, etc.) and had their disputes. But then that was all fixed by the end of the movie & they had that huge party, where the humans and monsters reconciled. Dunno why this movie had to focus on “human bad” sm 😭 and so many students are already half human-
As a straight female who was into Monster High for a minute, but never had any of the dolls and followed the lore pretty closely, I never liked the idea of this reboot. As (originally) the daughter of Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein, Frankie was originally female and made with female parts. Cleo and Deuce breaking up was a stupid decision since they were once the Jade and Beck of Monster High, but without the toxicity. Deuce wore sunglasses, Lagoona was Australian, and there was a Jekyll and Hyde character already who was a student who had full control over his powers. He dated female Frankie and everything. The whole witchcraft thing doesn't make sense because there was already a character who was a witch and Draculaura had her own problems. There are so many things wrong that others have pointed out already and I don't like it.
I think the problem with most modern kids movies is a reluctance to have any sort of serious character arc and instead they rely on popular/trending things or ideas

it always amazes me how studios with (relatively) big budgets and access to all the costumes, wigs, and make-up artists in the world can never figure out how to even get close to the amound of quality that some random cosplayer got to with a budget of 50 bucks and an amazon gift card

Because typically child stars can only work a certain amount of time each day due to child labor laws. So the production would take a lot longer to shoot and more of a budget because more then half the time would be spent on makeup alone. So that's typically why the makeup is over looked.

To be fair, and not for this movie, but for a lot of live action adaptations, there's a reason you don't want your costume designs to look like cosplays...

Still can’t get over the fact that Clawdeen and… Duece? - Cleo and Duece have always been Monster High’s it-couple, just saying their relationship went through a lot in the older movies but they always found their way back. Plus let’s just talk about how Clawdeen has always been the confident, big sister of the group with fierce fashion taste and has never needed a man - now compare the ‘revamp’. I really needed to get this out of my system I’m just disappointed MH isn’t what it used to be :(

Ok so as a monster high lover, I watched the new animated series and I have really warmed up to it. Even the designs.(Some of them still suck but you get the idea) It’s a bit more “child friendly”, than before but it still feels pretty nice. Kind of like mlp, it handles its stories well by still being childish but still being enjoyable for older people.
Although The first episode where Clawdewn first turns into a werewolf was kind of bad and really “cringe” and Clawdewn and Claud’s thing is till a bit, strange but you get the idea.
I also really relate to Twiligha and her redesign, since in the new series she’s autistic and I’m autistic, so that kind of adds to my love for the series.Even though that’s not something I was paying attention to, there’s good representation, and it’s not done in a “woke” or “cringe” way, it’s just there.
But the movie….this movie, is atrocious. What even is this!? This is how you used to promote the new series? The new animated series, Which directly contradicts the information in the movie… This is a joke!

There is a reason why FRANKIE is usually the main character in Monster High stuff. Because Frankie really is the clumsy, kind of awkward main character who doesn’t know how to talk to people.
You took the words right out of my mouth. Clawdeen is supposed to be that cool kid that wasn't afraid to speak her mind; that's probably why she was my favorite of the main trio. Frankie was like someone stated the clumsy one, and it was Draculaura who was the nervous wreck. And they COMPLETELY forgot about Clawdeen's brother Claude! A 2nd grader could've wrote a better plotline than this. The writers took something and tried making it their own and completely discarded the original character's personalities

What pisses me off the most, is that they made Ghoulia Yelps "speak". She's a zombie, so she can only speak zombie (moans and grunts). Because of this, many kids with disabilities and/or difficulty speaking, related to Ghoulia and felt represented. For Nickelodeon to ignore this and made Ghoulia "normal", is a complete slap in the face

Even though I didn't watch the movies much as a kid and mainly collected the dolls, I remember Ghoulia being my first MH doll. When I first got her, for some reason I decided that she was blind, mute, and the most popular girl in school because disabled people can be cool too. I was estatic when my cousin told me about how, in the show, she's really smart and liked by her peers, but is also disabled. I'm not physically disabled, but for some reason it made me really happy to see a character like her.
So hearing that they took away one of the things that made her special to me has me LIVID
But her boyfriend wasn't smart and did she got mad at him for that? NO! She loved him the way he is. They literally gave us a genius woman and her dimwitted boyfriend with the kindest heart. There was also an epidsode where vampires and werewolves were being racist against each other and during both communities protesting each other, Cleo legit apologize Ghoulia for being mean towards her after she found out that some vampires are shit towards the zombies. Lagoona in G1: A down to earth surfer ghoul who everyone can always count on, the rock that balances out the flaws of the others.
Lagoona now: A neurotic maniac who wants to rip and tear everything that lives, to slaughter the innocent, and use their bones as trophies.
Cleo in G1: While a bit of a pretentious rich girl, she has a good moral compass and a high drive to succeed. There’s ultimately a good person under those bandages, even if she sometimes acts a little haughty.
Cleo now: An unremarkable bully that picks on Frankie (among others) just because she feels like it.
Ghoulia in G1: The noverbal genius who excels and computer science, chemistry, and basically everything else, all while being a good friend to pretty much everyone. Comic book enthusiast, occasional punching bag, and a problemsolver unlike any other.
Ghoulia now: SCREEEEEEE

As a monster high fan, I’m so disappointed to see it end up like that. They cheaped out on a lot of details that were missed in books and the animated version. I wish they put the time and effort plus resources to make this better than it was.

Okay, the “No humans or half-humans” rule makes no sense. First of all, like you said, Frankie is made of human body parts. Second of all, Cleo is a mummy-a human who died and was buried a specific way. Yes, she’s undead now, but if you gave her a DNA test, it would read as human. Draculaura is a vampire-again, she was once human, and many vampires can pass as human rather convincingly-the original Dracula, for example. Clawdeen may be risking discrimination for only being half werewolf, but even a full-blooded werewolf would naturally be human, only transforming into a wolf on the full moon. What makes Frankie, Cleo, and Draculaura-all of whom were once human, or many humans in Frankie’s case-okay, but Clawdeen, who actually does have monstrous DNA, a target? I want to like this movie, but the rules of the setting don’t make sense.
It would be interesting is being more human is what ultimately brings them together and would give some reasoning to why Cleo bullies them being that she is projecting her own insecurities at being formerly human onto them. Also I wish Claude was in this movie.

Lets try to write a better plot, here we go:
Most monsters are part human in someways, but what makes werewolves special is that they can be human and then transition into monsters and vice versa, despite that they faced descrimination from both humans and monsters, and since most of them see the abilities as a curse they decided to get rid of it either by witch craft, special items and jewelry, shedding their monstrous form, which made them quite a rarity among monsters.
By the time clawdeen matured and started to gain monster appearance from her werewolf side, she realized she doesnt fit into human world, where her adventure into the monster high would begin, who learned from her father who also knew about it from her mother, despite neither have ever attended it.
After been accepted into said school, she noticed that many student reject her for being a werewolf, which in their Eyes is traitorous species since they rejected their true selves to blend with humans, and them knowing that she is only half monster makes it worse for her, which make her mission to turn people into her side and befriend them, it doesnt help that things are getting weird inside the school which made other student suspicious of her.
During her stay there, she learned that there was a werewolf student in the past, 100 years ago to be exact, which made clawdeen curios about how he fit in the school, after digging around, she learned that they were developing a cure for lycanthropy, which made her disappointed, but after finding the lab and discovering a letter that says that he/she couldnt do it and instead they are to proud to reject the monster form.
And the rest is still the same for the movie.
ALSO in the show one of the students was human most of the time, Jack Jeckyll only turned into Holt Hyde when he heard music I think?
I remember him being bullied or like an outcast, but idk if it was because he was human or because he was a nerd.
Also characters like Ghoulia used to be human too since she's a Zombie 🤷
Besides that I really don't understand why they made Clawdeen the protagonist, I used to love her, but it's a weird choice...Frankie is literally made to be the protagonist, it makes much more sense since shes only been alive a few days for them to be excited about everything.
Also I really don't mind the pronoun change, since like if anyone was gonna be nb it kinda makes sense that it's Frankie 🤷

When this came out, the main thing I wondered was why it existed at all. I never watched the original Monster High cartoons but I knew it existed and I kind of wondered why they decided that do this reboot and why they did a live action movie. It's even weirder because the also made a reboot cartoon that has nothing to do with the movie.

Exactly. The animated movies make the point again and again that monsters fear humans because of witch hunts and angry mobs with torches and such but they don’t HATE them. In one movie they literally try to get a (supposedly) human singer to preform at the school.

Yes, for a franchise that's literally about welcoming everybody regardless of their species, it was kind of confusing that this new movie decided to make monsters hate humans. Especially when several of the students from the original franchise are technically half human like Clawdeen or Jekyll/Hyde.
Then there's the entirety of "Ghouls Rule" that literally proves humans and monsters can and should try to get along.
It's been so long since I been up with MH but I never (or maybe I don't remember) Draculaura was once human.
One of the worst things about this reboot is they literally just rotated the main three’s personalities around. Clawdeen became the nerdy new girl, which was Frankie. Frankie became the more naive innocent one which was Draculaura, and then Draculaura is just super super sassy and the more chic one which was Clawdeen.
Then the fact that when trying to change clawdeen from being the stereotypical sassy black girl they instead made her made her biracial quite literally LESS black/lighter (Zendaya-like) and less threatening/fierce, like “one of the good black people” it’s insanity.
I hate that they did that.

Personally I don't have the biggest issue with the personality switch. I think that all three of the people who played the leads did a good job. Frankie maintained that kind of new kid/fish out of water vibe. I agree with you that one of the main issues was that instead of making her sassy and no nonsense like she usually is, they made her lighter skinned and kind of timid. I'm not saying that all black girls have to be portrayed the same way on tv, but taking a character who was originally coded as black and is shown to be a nice person in addition to being sassy and no nonsense, then changing her to be more timid and soft and lighter skinned is frustrating.

Yeah, they really dumbed down the lore. The book series the dolls are based on has pretty decent lore, the original doll line created surprisingly rich lore on its own, aaaaand the reboots threw out all of it.
the books were based on the dolls, not the other way around! the dolls were in production from at least 2008, hitting shelves in 2010, and the first book was released in 2011. i agree they should've kept the lore the same though :(

The biggest issue is that all the original die hard monster high fans are now mostly in their late teens and early 20s, and they made a movie fit for children. They just totally mistook their target demographic.

I absolutely hate everything that they've done with the characters and the lore and I didn't even watch the movie. But what irks me the most is what they've done with Cleo and Deuce's relationship. They were THE power couple at MH and made sure to make a plot point out of it. The way Cleo had her diva moments and Deuce would be the only one fully capable of toning it down without even trying, they completed each other perfectly.

It also irks me that they made Clawdeen half normie. It would have made sense if Frankie's father was a normie, she could have been created by Frankenstein just like the monster from the original story was. So instead of the monster being her father like in the original MH lore, it could have been the mad scientist who he himself is human.

Monster high was a franchise they could have made more mature and adult and people would have loved it. Their target demographic shouldn’t have been the 8 year olds, it should have been the late teens and early 20s who grew up with it.
The original movies already dealt with some pretty heavy topics, so it wouldn’t be anything too drastic, but to see the characters brought to life and made into a more serious (but still got the MH vibe) would be awesome.

7:05 My 8th grade U.S. history teacher had a guitar and sometimes would sing old U.S. songs back in the day, and would also sing original songs sometimes. He only did the guitar with the singing on some days. Don't worry.
The physical pain I was in while watching this is immeasurable. As a lover of the original series, seeing it get rebooted was bad enough. When I found out Nickelodeon was making a live-action version, my hopes weren't high but this was just so disappointing. I have several notes:
1. Why is Clawdeen the main character? It was usually Frankie that the series focused on, or it was Frankie AND all her friends equally. This isn't a big point with me, but it's definitely the first thing I noticed.
2. They switched around lots of the personalities of the characters. Frankie is this clumsy and naive, but kind-hearted girl just trying to figure life out since she's only 16 days old. Clawdeen is sassy and stubborn and will go above and beyond for her friends. Draculaura is excitable and bubbly and a total hopeless romantic. Cleo is snobby and self-indulgent, but she does care for her friends, and especially her boyfriend. In this movie, it feels like they just made everyone so cookie-cutter. No one feels unique.
3. Speaking of Cleo's boyfriend, IT'S DUECE. No ifs, ands, or buts. Frankie did have a thing for him in the first movie, but then she let it go once she realized his relationship with Cleo. They had their problems, of course, they even broke up a couple times throughout the show and movies, but they always got back together because they belonged together. They balanced each other out. And Duece was the ONE person that Cleo loved no matter what. He was the consistent factor in her life. So the fact that Nickelodeon broke them up and made Duece a love interest for Clawdeen really rubbed me the wrong way. CLAWDEEN of all people.
4. And also...WHERE ARE DUECE'S SUNGLASSES? Having him just wear glasses isn't enough to stop him from turning people to stone. You can still see his eyes through glass. That is such a big part of his character. He's the son of Medusa, so he wears sunglasses so he can look at people without turning them to stone.
5. Lagoona was never Cleo's best friend like it was depicted in this movie. Lagoona was never her sidekick. Cleo's sidekick was always Ghoulia, who I think is who Clawdeen talks to when she's looking for her dorm room. Only...well, Ghoulia's a zombie. She can't actually SPEAK. At least, not coherently. She usually just hobbles about, moaning. Others can understand her, of course, but still. I guess I get why they made Ghoulia able to talk in the movie but how she did was not what I was expecting. What was that cackle?! And if they wanted to include Lagoona, why didn't they include her boyfriend Gil? And on that note, if they included Draculaura, why didn't they include her boyfriend Clawd? Both guys are pretty important characters.
6. If they wanted to do a whole plot about humans being bad and making the school act weird because there's not a true monster heart, and this whole thing with Jekyll and Hyde...then WHY ISN'T JACKSON/HOLT HERE? Jackson and Holt were two of my favorite characters because of their dynamic with each other and their personalities (not to mention they were both potential love interests for Frankie). Plus there was a whole thing about Jackson being bullied because he was human and not realizing that he was actually part monster in the form of Holt, and vice versa. The school eventually learned to accept them both because even though they were half human, half monster, they were still good people.
I could go on for ages about this so I'll stop here. But yeah, these were just some thoughts I had. I'm disappointed with this movie. It just felt like the creators didn't pay much attention to the actual characters and lore. But that's just me.
