idk but the message at the end, “you are full of light and magic, go out there and have a fabulous day.” made me burst into tears, okay, so, maybe I know why, these past months have been hard and draining and that little message was just what I wanted to hear, I guess and that meant a lot to me. As always, thank you so much, emma for being the person that you're. ❤

@@ooousuario I didn’t mean got rid of as in cured. They got rid of the visible endometriosis formations they found, and I had a hysterectomy + bilateral salpingectomy. Microscopic endometriosis could still exist or develop. My doctor and I have had deeper discussions of endometriosis and I know a lot about it from researching and living with it for years. I just didn’t feel the need to get too detailed in my comment as that wasn’t the main point.

I used to drink the same amount but the decaf version - but I encourage y'all to read about how it's made... Better to drink normal coffee helath-wise 😅

I’m not sure if you’ve already seen this but if not, you should look up Mieko Kawakami’s interview with Murakami! She brings up a lot of points that you touched on, and I’ve heard her writing is exceptional as well.
“On the one hand, your work is boundlessly imaginative when it comes to plots, to wells, and to men, but the same can’t be said for their relationships with women. It’s not possible for these women to exist on their own. And while female protagonists, or even supporting characters, may enjoy a moderate degree of self-expression, thanks to their relative independence, there’s a persistent tendency for women to be sacrificed for the sake of the male leads. So the question is, why is it that women are so often called upon to play this role in Murakami novels?”

I used to miss the flavour but honestly it has been so long now that when I do have coffee I feel really ambivalent about it. Hope it helps you too, the first while without it can feel really rough! I really feel you with your thoughts about murakami and his conversations and portrayal of (especially young) women, and it has made me question reading his books many a time. (an article reading recommendation ahead.) at the same time there is that part of me who enjoys the worlds he creates. norwegian wood is actually one of the books that pulled me back into reading when i was 17, though i did really question the way women were scattered around the story and utilised in the process of building it. a lot of mixed feelings. and the mixed feelings continued when starting 1Q84 a year after norwegian wood. I only ever got as far as finishing parts 1 and 2, since the finnish translation appears in two books (parts 1 and 2 in one book and the 3rd as an individual book). i sort of lost drive and energy to continue with the story after that. i do really want to get around to finishing the whole book in the future.
around this same time i came across an article in lithub that was a translated interview between mieko kawakami (another japanise author i love) and haruki murakami. it concerned feminist discussion around his books and i think kawakami had somewhat the same kind of feelings about his books: a love and appreciation but at the same time disappointment and mixed feelings. if you haven't read it yet i highly recommed. i think it was eyeopening to see how their differing ways of thinking about these matters and themes worked together to form a discussion. (the link to the article is below).

Emma, this is exactly what I thought of 1Q84 as well. I tend to read every book for the book club, including rereading the ones I've already read. And while I usually enjoy getting reacquainted with a book and, more often than not, I like them more the second time round (such was the case for Orlando last year, for example), the memories I have of reading 1Q84 five years ago leave such a bad taste in my mouth that I opted out of rereading it for the book club. And after watching this video... I'm glad I did.

I'm 470 pages into 1Q84! It gets weirder. I am interested to see where it goes, but I have mixed opinions. The theme of apperances and how they can decieve us is interesting. And, I love the description of Aomame's smile: "her nose and mouth become violently distorted, her jaw twisted to the side, and her lips curled back, exposing Aomame's large white teeth. Instantly, she became a wholly different person, as if a cord had broken, dropping the mask that normally covered her face." I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the rest of the book!

For the French edition of IQ84 the books are split in a trilogy and I think taking a break between each part made the experience better for me, as you have time to take it all in. Both Kafka on the Shore and IQ84 are amongst Murakami's most disturbing books, but I read them back in highschool and they got me back into reading. Especially in those 2 books it feels like he writes really disturbing scenes mainly for shock value... As they are considered his "masterpieces" they are often recommended but for first timers I would recommend his shorter stories like After Dark (which I remember Emma also gave 5 stars to).

1Q84 has been on my shelf for over 3 years and I've been looking forward to reading it with the book club all year. I even bought the audiobook too. I'm not very far in and I have serious misgivings. Is it a good book about bad thinking? Maybe but so far I don't think Murakami thinks very highly of the way people think about each other. Are these his obsessions, his characters' thoughts, or his view of ours? Can't wait to hear what Emma thinks!

I attempted to read Murakami for the first time recently. Enjoyed When the Wind Sings but stopped halfway through Pinball 1973 when the character praises his work morale by saying he would have done well in Auschwitz. Maybe being a German I'm overly sensitive but that left such a bad taste in my mouth I'll stay off Murakami for a while.
The ending message of your video is so wonderful ❤

Trying to not sound like a snob, but specialty coffee from a local coffee shop is leagues ahead of anything you can get preground from a supermaket or a chain coffee shop. But it is expensive, a good grinder is expensive and getting a nice cup requires more effort than most people are willing to exert after just waking up haha

1Q84 was my first and only Murakami, because yeah... beautifully written, but skeeve city. It's good to know that was him at his skeeviest and not the norm, because I've been wondering all this time how you could like him so much. 😅

I wish I could love Murakami like others do but I just can’t get past the weird way he writes women. He’s always talking about their breasts in weird ways and some of the complete misunderstanding of female anatomy is hard to overlook.

    • @sofiaborges3853

I’ve read Sputnik Sweetheart and liked it a lot. It’s from a women’s pov and at least to me it doesn’t seem to me that it has that problem. I’ve read it long ago so I don’t recall 100% but at least that didn’t stick in my mind. Also Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is amazing and doesn’t have much of that either, the main character is a male but he doesn’t talk that much about women at least not in a depreciating way imo

    • @cass465
      @cass465 15 дней назад

@@sofiaborges3853 I’m talking specifically about how female characters are often described through their boobs, mainly in Kafka on the Shore (“she had a good bust for a such a small frame”) or in 1Q84 where a 17 year old girl is described as having “large and perfectly ripe breasts”. And then when describing when her friends died a violent death, it’s described as “their lovely breasts - breasts that had vanished without a trace.” I find it really gross and objectifying.
And this quote from Men without Women : ““The fact that a tampon of mine was stashed away in his desk drawer. Maybe it was because I was so turned on that my period started almost immediately”. It’s like he views women as an alien species which he finds sexually appealing.
I know that he is talented but I can never enjoy his works. I prefer reading women or men who empathise with women.
