Agreed. As it is, the ceiling appears quite dark and is competing with the lovely wallpaper, which should be the star of the show. Also, I hope you're able to find some pretty covers for all the light switches in the hallway. It's a small touch that delivers a lot of charm. The wallpaper really suits your house. ~ Lisa
Have to say I agree about the ceiling, I feel like either a colour-match to the wallpaper background or a lighter shade of the panelling green. The blue I think is overly dark and there’s too many different things going on in the space.
Designer here! I'm also not convinced with the blue ceiling, and I'd love to see the background beige from the wallpaper as the ceiling + crown molding color. I know it's not quite as colorful as the rest of your house, but I think the combination of the wallpaper and the green is already the perfect amount of loud + the blue ceiling is just taking away from it. Maybe you could bring that blue into a throw on the window seat or some art or if you decide to switch out the main light fixture.
I love the wallpaper! For me, personally, I don't like how dark the ceiling paint is. It just seems claustrophobic and makes the space seem smaller. I love how colorful your house is! But maybe the ceiling for this hallway can be colorful, just a light color. Perhaps match it to the background of the wallpaper. Making the crown molding a pale blue could give you the color and whimsy you like. Great video! :)
Yes, and although she colour matched to the wallpaper, it is not well seen in the wallpaper and it’s very dark and a large amount that appears not very connected to the wallpaper once seen on the ceiling.
William Morris wallpapers always are sooo beautiful, Ariel! Your pattern choice is perfection, and you're doing a spectacular job! I really love how you explain your thought processes, your feelings, and exactly what is going through your mind. I'm thinking that you might be happier with the ceiling painted a much lighter color, perhaps the background color of the paper. It would be extra airy, fresh, and cheerful, and inviting! Absolutely crown molding would be an exquisite finishing touch! Your guests won't want to leave your warm, cozy home! I'm a new viewer and am so impressed with your skills! Can't wait for the next episode! Linda

Me too :) Sometimes when you show us the decision process I'd go for another option but then you make the result so whimsical and cozy that I can see why you chose that particular option. But this time I was like 'I absolutely love that wall paper and can see it already in the room' and then you chose it and I was also Like 'yes!' ❤ thanks Ariel for your videos!
My 2 cents: I think the crown molding should be the same color as the boards at the bottom of the walls. That would tie everything in and make the blue like less of a dark mass. Your style is impeccable as always, Ariel!
I think the ceiling would look so beautiful color matched to the beige background color of the wallpaper! With crown molding around the top. I love the wallpaper you chose. It's perfect. I'm also so happy to see the stair railings finished! It turned out great.
The wallpaper is stunning! But I must say I’ve never used a tiny bone folder to install wallpaper. There are much larger plastic smoothers and it will speed up the process and make removing air bubbles 100% easier. Just love your videos and your enthusiasm for this magnificent home.
Painting the ceiling such a dark colour will make it feel lower and the space much smaller & darker, which you said yourself you want to avoid. Although it’s the same blue as in the wallpaper, it overwhelms the beautiful wallpaper, which is actually the main feature. It should compliment it. Either paint the ceiling a much lighter shade (only a tint) of the green that is already in the space, or the same background colour as the wallpaper. Lovely to see each of your spaces develop! 💖
The same blue only much lighter would work also. I did that in my bedroom. Matched the blue of my quilt and it read too dark. Cut it half and half with white and now it looks like a perfect match, only it’s really much lighter.
I always look forward to your content!!! I would recommend matching the pinkish tan of the base color of the wallpaper up to the ceiling and doing a matching crown molding in between. The blue is pretty but it shortens the room, making it feel more squat than I imagine it actually is
Yeah I agree. The pinkish tan would brighten up the room. The blue-grey is beautiful but the pinkish tan would continue the wallpaper and make everything seamless
I ‘m enjoying your videos so much! Love your decorating, you have a great eye for beauty. I love how you are returning your house to her former glory. Can’t wait for the next one! Bye
Oh ariel, your videos inspire me so much, you've become a role model to me! I always end up loving your choices but I do think matching the ceiling and molding to the background color of the wallpaper will improve the space even more :) Thanks for your hard work around the house and online, it matters a lot ♡
I think the blue is perhaps too dark for the ceiling but could still be used as the colour for the crown moulding? That way you get the best of both worlds!
Personally, I love the slower pace. With the addition of the beautiful classical music, it’s soothing and I feel like I can really take in the process. I also love hearing your thought process as you go. Real time problem solving a project like this reassures me that I don’t need to have ALLLLL the answers to begin. The paper is GORGEOUS. The ceiling colour does look a bit off at the moment, but I would be curious to see how it would look with the addition of the crown moulding. It might just be that it’s such an abrupt transition between the paper and the ceiling colour and the addition of further detail interest of the moulding will tie it all together.
I think with crown molding that is the same paint color as the wainscoting and door frame molding, the ceiling color will make sense. I think it currently looks a bit too dark right next to that very light wallpaper, but with a break of the unifying element, the main paint color, it won't seem as jarring a transition and will probably look really pretty. If you feel after you have the crown molding in place that the ceiling still doesn't work, I think it's just a matter of picking a lighter shade of the same blue, without going too light. I was hoping you would go with one of the other wallpapers, I really liked the one you described as "sad", as I think it would have played very nicely with the trim color and the ceiling color you chose. But this wallpaper is lovely, and with crown molding, and art on the walls, it will really look nice.
I think the ceiling was good in theory. But for some reason just comes across very very gray. I figured it would be more periwinkle to compliment the minty walls.
I think the ceiling needs to be the background color of the wallpaper. It’s such a small space, I think it makes it feel a bit closed in. I love the paper you picked. That was my fav too!
Honestly the whole time when your were weighing your options of the wallpaper. I was like “please pick that one. Please for the love of god pick that one” AND YOU DID YAY
There is something you can buy, a thick paper, that you can put over rough or holey walls under wallpaper. When I removed wallpaper from my kitchen walls, wanting to paint them, I found big holes (!!) in the drywall. So, no paint. Used the special, thick paper, horizontally, then pasted wallpaper over that, with great results. I love your wallpaper. Very light and cheerful. I agree with others that a pale ceiling would be more attractive with it.
I loved your first wallpaper picks that being said, it's your house so do what gives you joy 😊. I agree I don't think a blue ceiling is going to work. If you want the space bright maybe try to match the lighter color in the wallpaper? I don't think its white looks like a creme color? I agree molding will finish it and make it look great. Will you be thrifting any decor? Those videos are fun as well as doing that and decorating for the seasons. Enjoy your week look forward to your next video.
A dark ceiling could create a cozy warm feeling but it will probably give it a lowering feeling too. A lighter ceiling could make it feeling uplifting and bright. Go with the mood that makes you feel at peace with how it looks. You need to make it your own. I love your channel.❤️
The stress I felt when you started dragging the bookshelf with the lamp still on top! 😂 I think one ‘issue’ with the blue is that it will look a lot darker on the ceiling than it would on the wall because of the way light hits it. I love the idea of it - really makes the blue leaves pop! - but a lighter tone of the colour might work better. (I imagine you’d have to hold the paint swatch cards upside down against the wallpaper to get the right one, if that makes sense?) I’ve loved seeing all the stages of this hallway coming together over time - a much more realistic view of renovations!
Okay so I just learned how to do this kind of wallpaper over the last year or two. So I was taught to take the glue to the paper! Do it thin, glue the top half, fold it to the middle, glue the bottom half and fold the bottom to the middle. This is to make it easy to transport and unfold as you work. then you take your top and hang from the top. The blue piece you were using to cut the paper, that is what you use to smooth your paper! I like to start from the top middle, go down halfway, fill from the middle out to the top. and continue to the bottom! Then make your cut! Sometimes starting from one corner of your room to the next makes your cuts easier for matching up. You did so good! Having high quality paper definitely makes a major difference. I’m so excited for you!!
I was cringing on the second piece of wallpaper. she was talking so much that the glue dried. The glue goes in the paper first and then the paper goes on the wall. And STOP talking!!
My understanding is It depends on the type of wall paper, weather it's non woven or woven how you apply the glue, at least the wallpaper available here. We have a non woven where the method for that wallpaper was the same Ariel used, the glue could be applied to the wall. But with woven is where you need to precut and let the peices soak up the glue before applying to the wall
I love the wallpaper! The blue ceiling is definitely way too dark imo, at least on camera. Maybe a baby blue would look nice? You would still keep the blue element from the wallpaper, but also keep the room bright 😊
I literally shrieked with glee when I realized that you had posted another video so soon after the other one. You are very welcome to not finish a project all in one video take as much time as you need, that’s just more videos for us to love. You are an amazing soul and your house gets more beautiful every video.
Nice work 👌💕 I agree with those who say to paint the ceiling the same background colour! With this ceiling colour the darker flowery wallpapers would look great!!! Also you are very sweet!!!
Don't put yourself under too much pressure to finish a project before posting. Your videos are always top quality and we are just happy to see you've posted. I think its safe to say most of us are here for you, the journey and not just the outcome
I was not convinced of this wallpaper until I saw you put the first piece up. When I tell you I GASPED! It looks fantastic, clearly the perfect choice. I will say, I think the blue ceiling, while a beautiful colour, makes the room very dark. I could see a white/beige ceiling with green trim looking beautiful. Maybe matching the light background of the wallpaper to the ceiling?
For working over the stairs, I suggest either renting some scaffolding, or using ladders for some DIY scaffolding. It can be intimidating to setup, but once done, you can feel confident working above the staircase and it will be way easier. Best of luck for the project!
Yes, a lighter blue would be nice. The blue on the wallpaper "looks" lighter, due to the mass of cream surrounding it. Old timey homes sometimes used a light sky blue on the ceilings to imitate the vastness/openness of space, bringing the outdoors inside, cooling the home (in thought). 💗 Beautiful wallpaper! Great job hanging it! 💗 Yes, a stair ladder IS needed. And, yes, those stripey divots in that wall will telegraph through the wallpaper. 😢 Lovely choices. 💙
I think the blue ceiling is a great idea! Disregard the following if you don't want advice. I don't know if it's only like this on camera, but the darker blue makes the room feel shorter, that might be fixed with the molding, it might be fixed by more lamps that illuminate the ceiling, or I would try the same colour, just a few notches lighter. If it's lighter, but still the same hue, I think it will still complement the wallpaper as intended.
Girl, im laughing so hard about you saying you have to be calm to apply wallpaper. I recently did my entire house together with my boyfriend and that man truly had zero patience for it. You're very, VERY right. (house turned out fine btw ^^)
I love your choice of wallpaper. It’s so beautiful. You might consider going lighter on the ceiling. Definitely look for a beautiful large chandelier perhaps something from the Victorian era maybe with frosted or etched glass that would lighten the stair area more. You have done a wonderful job of accentuating the features of your home and the time it was built.
I adore your home renovation videos... no one else is really doing them quite like you. I love your sense of design and color. So excited to see where your house goes!!!
I love how your bookbinding tools and skills are now coming in handy for the wallpapering :D And I second that you don't need to finish an entire project in one video. I actually like watching this gradual process, that makes it even more real, and I'm totally here for that!
For the bubble problem with the wallpaper, we use to take a sewing pin and poke a tiny hole in the bubble to let the air out, then smooth the area. Years ago we put the paste on the back of the paper. Imagine my surprise when you put the paste on the wall. Doesn’t matter and it saves the paper from folding in on itself. Love the paper and your hanging of it. I was worried you were going to fall down the stairs while taking the plywood off. Please, please get some type of scaffolding up if you paper there. Thanks for taking me back eons of years ago when I wallpapered my house. ❤❤❤
Yes! I remember paste being put onto the paper (when my parents wallpapered in the previous century). I wondered if there was better adhesion by putting it on the wall instead.
I agree with a lot of the others on this video about the ceiling. I don’t think the blue totally works and that going with the background color of the wallpaper would be lovely!
LOVE the choice of wallpaper and I agree that crown molding will really pull it together! I do agree with the other comments that a lighter paint colour on the ceiling would be better, whether a lighter blue or a tan or whatever :)
For the ceiling I think a lighter _shade_ of the same _color_ blue with a crown molding that _matches_ the blue from the wallpaper would look nice. Like, the darker shade frames the lighter shade. Keeps the color but brightens it up a touch! I see people suggesting to bring the beige from the wallpaper up but I feel like that almost leaves it a little too open? I'm not sure how to explain it but the mental image just feels like it'd look unfinished, even with a crown molding.
10:54 the way I cheered when you announced this choice 😅 the whole segment I was going “choose that one choose that one choose that one” haha. It’s simple yet elegant and stylish and goes with the aesthetic choices you’ve made so far for the hallway, the others just looked too busy for lack of a better way of describing it
Love your wall paper 💕 your ceiling is a little too dark, maybe try 1/2 strength of your wainscoting color… I’m an interior designer & that’s always a good tip for a lighter color on a ceiling. If you’re set on your blue color you could lighten that color 1/2 strength. 💕
I love, love, love the wallpaper and the green board and batten but I am not crazy about the blue ceiling. Another commenter suggested the ceiling could be the same color as the wallpaper background and I absolutely agree. I am a fan of wallpaper and am surprised how many people avoid it when renovating. I am glad you are not one of those people, lol.
As soon as you put up your final wallpaper choice, I thought, “that’s it, that’s the one!” Really Beautiful! The ceiling color feels a bit dark. But the truest test comes after the lighting is added. Maybe wall sconces with light facing upward.
That wallpaper is stunning and so fits with your style and house. I agree that the ceiling is too dark, but it’s your house. Have you considered papering the stairwell wall all the way down to the ground floor?
Yay! Another house vid!🖤 Don't know how far you are in the process now, but as soon as I saw your color choice, I thought it might be best to get that blue in a slightly lighter shade, because whatever you choose, it will look very different over a large area. There will be *more* of it, and that can be tricky. I'm not saying change it, but perhaps in the future, if you do a non-white ceiling (I'm *not* a fan of ceiling white, btw) imagine your tiny swatch color over an entire wall/ceiling.
Love the video as always!! My opinion on the ceiling - I would do either a quite a bit lighter blue that still matches the hue - or make it the same color as the background of the wallpaper! I think when accent colors are blown up to that size they always look darker than they appear in the artwork/wallpaper. Can't wait for part 2!
Thrilled to hear you had fun with this new type of wallpapering! I was watching going, "Trust your gut on this, Ariel! If it's not quite right---pivot!" Case in point, the ceiling and molding colours. It'd be typical to paint them the green (but I also think that would be potentially overwhelming) so I like the idea of a different colour(s). For my part, and I think this may be just because of the lighting but, the blue ceiling reads dark grey and makes what I can see feel very cavelike even when I compared shots of before and after. Maybe a lighter shade of the same colour? Or, perhaps, another colour within the paper (but also a lighter variant) would present that connection between the ceiling and the wallpaper but also a contrast that is less light absorbing but still cosy? Whatever you choose though: it's YOUR house and I'm gonna absolutely relish in your creative craftperson adventures! ☺ Cheers to you!
Maybe if you go with a more light brownish color for the ceiling, like the color of branches, it'd be more harmonious with the wooden doors and the warm tone of the room
The real difference between peel and stick wallpaper and this kind of wallpaper comes in the removal. But you don't have to worry about that! I love the wallpaper. In my head the wallpaper is on and there is beautiful art in old gold and brass frames hanging on both sides of the hallway and the light is reflecting off the frames and just giving it this lovely old, cozy feel. I can't wait to see what you do with the space!
What a treat to have two videos in one week!! My brain would want to add stars to the ceiling, like how some chapels and church ceilings are painted. But maybe that would be too much with everything else? I love watching your style come together and how you're attuning to the houses style. It's like a true collaboration between you and the house.
Almost 50 years of doing wallpapering, and not once have I ever applied it to the wall first. *Always* apply it to the paper first, then fold the paper on itself to give the paste time to rest. "Booking” wallpaper is the process of folding the paper onto itself, paste-to-paste, and allowing it to rest for a set period of time as recommended by the manufacturer. This process allows the paper to soften and relax so it is ready to install.
The blue ceiling seems like it's pulling down the space and making it smaller looking. Something brighter perhaps? Or even just a few shades lighter? As for that wall paper, WOW it's absolutely perfect in this space. It's all coming together so nicely!
I would go several shades lighter on th ceiling. There is just a hint of that color in the wallpaper....a hint of color on the celing Ithink, would be lovely.
I think the lightswitch in the room should either be wallpapered to match or painted green to match, or maybe another color from the wallpaper! It would look really cool🤩
If you put longer 2x8’s on side across from the floor over the stairwell and to the other floor (through railing), you could then run a piece or 2 of thick plywood along those 2x8’s creating a solid place to stand and paint. I love how it looks so far!
Looove the wallpaper, I’m not sure the blue works on the ceiling, I think it makes it feel heavier and darker & doesn’t feel like it coheres with the rest of the space- I wonder if matching the creamy colour of the wallpaper would look better? I agree crown moulding would be excellent, maybe in a green to match the panelling😊 Also I found wallpaper SO STRESSFUL so I very much admire your calm😂
I think painting the ceiling the same background color as the wallpaper would create a very cozy and warm feeling, without being such a dark contrast!
Just what I was thinking 🫶🏻
I think the ceiling color could be 2 shades lighter than the dark green. With crown molding matching the darker green.
Yessss I love when ppl do that

I agree.
Totally. The blue is way too dark but if she likes it that is all that matters.
The ceiling color reads charcoal gray on camera.
I agree. The wallpaper background color would be so perfect on the ceiling.
Yes, it's too dark and too cool-toned. The green and the beige is really warm and soft and then that blue is super dark and super cold.
Two video's in one week! We are so lucky.
I came comment the same thing!
Wot! First thing I watched today.
@@ginasmitasin479 me too!
Weeks of drought now another video it's almost gluttonous ❤
my first thought!
i think you should take the background colour of the wallpaper and bring it up to your ceiling. it'll make the room lighter!
yes that’s such a good idea! the beige will still keep it warm and cozy but also not too dark and cramped
Yessssss i had the same thought. It looks too dark
Yes!!! With the crown moulding added that would be stunning 😍

You can totally continue on the way you have but little tips that made a major difference for me!
Professionals "book" the pasted paper like you describe and let it sit for a couple minutes and the paper softens and is easier to hang.
Thats how i was taught and always did it…it makes it much easier when doing large long walls sections
"Shockingly well" is such a wholesome term! 😅
11:26 i was rooting for that one to be picked! its reminds me of a berry bush
Same!!
Do you _happen_ to know the name of the wallpaper?
@@FrogeniusW.G. medlar blue/red by G P & J baker
Use a damp cloth to help smooth out the air bubbles.....I agree. The ceiling is too dark...your house is lovely
You should cover the switch plate. So easy
Nice work 👌💕 I agree with those who say to paint the ceiling the same background colour! With this ceiling colour the darker flowery wallpapers would look great!!! Also you are very sweet!!!
Im not sure about the blue ceiling too but the green with the wall paper!! And the brun door!!!
how about wood for the ceiling?
Don't put yourself under too much pressure to finish a project before posting. Your videos are always top quality and we are just happy to see you've posted. I think its safe to say most of us are here for you, the journey and not just the outcome
I think we would all love a Bob Ross-esque show of you just wallpapering 😂 truly so calming
I was SCREAMING for the wallpaper option that you ended up picking!
Omg your cat deciding to sit in the book nook in the middle of the pile of wallpaper supplies while giving you a judgy look is hilarious
I couldn't agree more!
Or the background color of the wallpaper sounds good.
For working over the stairs, I suggest either renting some scaffolding, or using ladders for some DIY scaffolding. It can be intimidating to setup, but once done, you can feel confident working above the staircase and it will be way easier. Best of luck for the project!
I would paint the ceiling the same color as the cream in the wallpaper
Ariel is slowly becoming the Bob Ross of wallpaper! ☺️❤
I would match the light tone of the wallpaper and paint the ceiling or even wallpaper the ceiling
Yes, a stair ladder IS needed. And, yes, those stripey divots in that wall will telegraph through the wallpaper. 😢
Lovely choices. 💙
Love the paper! Ceiling seems too dark. All your other rooms are so light-filled.
My great uncle would say that any couple who said they never fought was either lying, or they'd never hung wallpaper together!
As soon as you laid the wallpaper out, I was obsessed with the one that you ended up picking! The hallway looks so beautiful!
Painting a ceiling a pale "haint" blue is a southern tradition to ward off evil spirits. I think the ceiling would be amazing a more pale shade.
I really like the green ceiling on your first floor. It could be cool to carry that into the upstairs
I think the warm off white of the wallpaper would be a better ceiling color and brighten the room back up
For the ceiling I think a lighter _shade_ of the same _color_ blue with a crown molding that _matches_ the blue from the wallpaper would look nice.
Love the blue ceilling ! Perfect with the wallpaper and the green ❤
9:12 - the instant you put that up I said "that's the one!!" 😍 It's SO GORGEOUS - and wow, two videos in one week, what a freaking treat. 💜
I would prefer the ceiling in a sort of cream color to brighten the space a bit
10:54 the way I cheered when you announced this choice 😅 the whole segment I was going “choose that one choose that one choose that one” haha. It’s simple yet elegant and stylish and goes with the aesthetic choices you’ve made so far for the hallway, the others just looked too busy for lack of a better way of describing it
I agree!!! never have I felt so invested in which option she was going with
Literally same 😂
Loved this video
I just made my afternoon coffee only to see Ariel uploaded another video?! Hell yeah. I love the blue ceiling and the wallpaper.
we need ariel merch that reminds us “it’s just physics” 😌💕
Yay! Another house vid!🖤
Don't know how far you are in the process now, but as soon as I saw your color choice, I thought it might be best to get that blue in a slightly lighter shade, because whatever you choose, it will look very different over a large area.
I love it! I’ve learned to trust your color choices. I’ve been doubtful sometimes, only to be won over in the end.
Its beautiful . I love the colours
Hugged by the joy of it 🥹
Thrilled to hear you had fun with this new type of wallpapering!
Loving the blue ceiling. The hall looks almost like a hedge into flowers growing towards the sky. Definitely need crown molding.
What a beautiful and apt description. 🖤💐
We’re getting more videos than we deserve
This has honestly has made my Friday evening!
I think the lightswitch in the room should either be wallpapered to match or painted green to match, or maybe another color from the wallpaper!
It would look really cool🤩
truly can say ive never been this early
Same!
If you put longer 2x8’s on side across from the floor over the stairwell and to the other floor (through railing), you could then run a piece or 2 of thick plywood along those 2x8’s creating a solid place to stand and paint. I love how it looks so far!
I'm loving this style of video! The talking as you work, the asmr, it all feels so much more like we're there with you :)
I agree matching the ceiling to the background of the wallpaper would make the space feel larger and lighter but still warm!
Not me immediately loving the first wallpaper and then Ariel buried the lead so well that I was shocked when that was the one she landed on! 😂
Consider covering the light switch plates and outlets plates with your wallpaper.
Looove the wallpaper, I’m not sure the blue works on the ceiling, I think it makes it feel heavier and darker & doesn’t feel like it coheres with the rest of the space- I wonder if matching the creamy colour of the wallpaper would look better? I agree crown moulding would be excellent, maybe in a green to match the panelling😊 Also I found wallpaper SO STRESSFUL so I very much admire your calm😂
ahh, I‘m so excited for this 🏡
