I used your idea/dimensions and added a few things. I did it with just a single 3/4” sheet of plywood and cut two longitudinal 4” pieces to build up the hook lines. I added stain and poly to match the garage doors. Thanks for the inspiration.
Good ideas thanks. But - to be honest - thinking of that cabinet you made, not many folks have those very nice saws/tools etc you are using! However, the rack with hooks was a great idea, feasible with the usual 'amateur' diy tools - and I'm working on it!
@@craftedworkshop the last time I heard the word dado was as a kid watching "This Old House" in the late 80s/early 90s. Thanks for the video - this is exactly what I need to organize my garage.

Thanks a bunch! That kind of feedback really means a lot. I'm still fairly new to the scene but am hoping to continue growing like I have been. Spread the word!
My 1st technical video which RUclips recommended from watching a bike review and i LOVED ❤️💕😍it! I don't own any power tools so will probably have Home Depot do all the wood cuts but I'm EXCITED to give this project a try (going to cheat with making the french cubby and use a plastic 3 drawer Rubbermaid brand although I already miss not having that custom shelf spacing flexibility) Thanks for showing every step and not assuming anything. I would never have known to pre drill holes before trying to thread in the hooks or to drill plywood to avoid cracking. also the leveler thing is smart. I can't tell you how long it takes me to get a picture frame to hang evenly on my wall by only trying to eyeball it. Sincerely, your newest subscriber ;)
Thanks for the tutorial, I just built this in my garage this morning! I always worried about hanging my bikes by the rim, but the LBS where I bought my mountain bike does the same thing.
Nope, it definitely should not do that. The rims on bicycles are incredibly strong, and part of the weight is being distributed to the tire, which is resting on the wall.
Can anyone answer why it is preferable to have rear wheel off the floor? I would be making something similar but ideally I would like the hooks to take minimal weight due to the location I have available and the strength of that wall and it seems logical to let some of the weight of the bike be supported by the tire and the ground? Cheers
There was confusion in how the video transitioned from 2×4 placement to the cabinet being built. It didn't show how you got the bikes onto hooks, new to biking and dyi projects so it's not clear enough, constructive criticism, I've been wanting to learn how to build a drawer, thanks for the knowledge
Dave Williams hah, they're not expensive but definitely an investment. Was worth it for me, considering I use the saw basically every day and really like the added safety. That said, my Dewalt Job Site Saw I had previously worked great!
I always hang bikes Head to toe so I can keep them closer to each other and maintain a more uniform look. Also forgo the 2x4 and just went into the studs every 16”
Saved me over $256CDN dollars in buying the monkey bar racks! I cut the 2x4x8 in half to make a bike rack and a rack for shovels and other tools. Total cost came to 44 dollars! My garage is now organized.
I'll start out with nice rack. Just a note some bikes that have hydraulic disc brakes cannot be hung on the wall or upside down. I found this out by hanging my bike from ceiling in my garage anytime my bike was hung up longer than a week I would have to bleed my brakes.
Hanging your bikes should make no difference to the brakes. I hang all of my bikes, all with disc brakes and have had no need to bleed any of them. Sounds like you had air in the system already and it just became more noticeable once all the air had risen to the lever end of the hoses.
Just finished building. Quick tip: Don't just use the cheapest hooks you can find. It makes a diffrence! The large square ones sag alot which you need to account for. They also allow the bikes to slide around which throws off the spacing. The smaller curved ones seem to hold bikes in place just fine. Thanks for the video! 👍
I like how you commented on this video, it's very straight forward, let me know what can you say about this one ruclips.net/video/jq-nh_QP9cI/видео.html
Could you do 1 Rail system? You would have to flip the bikes on the hooks. Handles Bars Up and then Handle Bars downward. That way more room on floors ?
Thanks for the video. I built a 6 ft version for 4 bikes today. Works great. Cost: $8.00 for the hooks. Already had the wood on hand from prior projects.
Great video. I made a similar system for hanging my numerous bikes but didn't think to stagger the height of the hooks. The one useful addition I made was to make it so I could secure the bikes. I fastened another 2x4 at crank height. I attached rings to this 2x4 which lets me use cable locks to lock the bikes. It is super easy to unlock and remove whatever bike I would like to ride. While this will not deter a seasoned bike thief, it will certainly keep people from helping themselves when the garage door is open.
Not sure why it took me so long to think about looking here for a bike storage solution. Knowing you have done stuff with Seth I should have also known you may have something bike related for storage. I have been trying to come up with an idea to store my 7+ bikes in the least amount of room possible but still be able to get to them with ease. I am also renting so had been planning on building something free standing but at this point this is a way better solution and ... Spackle for the move/win haha. Thanks for this amazing video and I also love the shelf idea, only wish I had picked up the table saw someone was giving away last week. Looking forward to you and @Seth's Bike Hacks doing another video
Thanks for a great video. A bit cheeky, but I'm only looking to store one bike: where did you find the white-orange bike wheel clip on the wall that you had to start with?
How could LOCKS be added? Installed in a public space, what could be added so people could lock their bikes to something? A single metal bar for all the bikes would surely be in the way. A single long metal chain with slack could be out of the way and adaptable to different bikes' positions. If someone were able to cut/saw the chain, they could get 5 bikes at once. One chain per bike - more expensive but less tempting for thrives. The chains could be attached to the lower plank of wood, or to a third plank of wood, securely affixed to the wall - or attached directly into the wall using wedge anchors(?). Pulling on a chain would be easy (adapting to the thief's position for maximum pulling force), so the attachment would need to be very secure. Other options?
Saw you on Seths channel doing the e-Bike thing, PROMPTLY came looking for your channel when I heard you were into woodworking. Turns out I had visited this channel before and I actually BUILT your bike storage solution TODAY BEFORE I saw the video. Its a good thing I already subscribed. GREAT STUFF man.
Kinda late to the party... is there a reason why not leave the rear wheel on the ground? Take some load off the wall? Considering I won’t change bikes every month...my bike is about 36LB, and I have 2 others at 30+ each
I screwed the 2x4 in the studs and as soon as i tried screwing the j hooks in the board it started pulling it off the wall. What am i doing wrong here?? Ps. Its ok to make fun of me. I just need to figure it out or ill go nuts. 😀
Make sure you use 3.5 inch wood screws and confirm the screws are going through the walls. The 2x4 should have screws in the left and right ends of the wood, as well in the middle.
Great project. I did the same since we have 7 bikes. 3 are for my kids. I also made some angled shelves for them to grab helmets and shoes. Speaking of that. Time for a ride!
Hi. First, great video. I was hoping it would be listed in the description, but I'm want to know what 2 of the tools are you were using. The first is at 0:48, there's some kind of stud finder that is pinable to the wall, and the other is the drill bit you used that had the counter sink piece at the top. Both seem like something I need to have. Thanks!
I have built that rack. It does pack the most bikes into a small space. However, those hooks are garbage. I used the exact same ones. They don’t stay in place. They twist and grab your spokes, so getting the bike off the rack is a frustrating mess, forcing you to twist and turn the bike while it bangs into the other bikes. Getting them on the rack is the same. The hooks also bend within a few months, making them even more likely to grab your spokes and rim. My wife hated this rack and refused to put her bike on it, it was too hard for her to get it on, and she could not get it off at all. My kids couldn’t possibly lift their bikes onto it. Eventually, even I hated trying to put my bike on it. I plan to build one with the same concept, but a different method of holding the wheel, and a block-and-tackle pulley to assist lifting the bike into place.
I think you are the new standard for just-the-requisite-facts-ma'am no bullshit instructional video. Thank you & please keep up the good and necessary (and no-bullshit) work.
Dayum. This is such an "elegant" solution (simple, efficient, etc.) and sooo much better than hanging our bikes from the rafters in our garage...(insert visual from a horror movie of a room full of hanging, rusty but sharp tools swinging all over the place).
Hey, first one of these that I think is well thought out because you arrange the bikes in two rows. Could you have combined bike-hook with a french cleat system? Like ... screw hook into piece of wood and then hang that piece onto the cleat?
I know this is an old post, but this solution worked perfect for me. I just wanted to thank you for making this video, it took all the guess work out, and really helped.
You can do it for fifty bucks, including buying an extension cord, drill, bits, screws and having the cuts done at the home center at about $2 each and you can use a tape measure from the dollar store.

looks really good! if i hang the bike for a long period of time, would the weight of the bike warp the bike's rim?
Nope, it definitely should not do that. The rims on bicycles are incredibly strong, and part of the weight is being distributed to the tire, which is resting on the wall.
Simple solution: Ride it more often. :)
Oh wow, the French cleat. Sweet idea.

Do you think if the hooks were angled down a little the bikes would hang better and not bend the hook?
Question; trying to get clarity on the distance between the hooks/tires...?
I always see these with mountainbikes or racebikes. Would this work with normal city bikes? Or are those much heavier and wouldn't that work?
Cool.
It looks like it will be hard to get the bikes off the hooks with them being turned on there side?

The french cleat shelving and the 20 dollar bike rack can be made with nothing more than scrap plywood and 5 grand in wood working tools.
I looked at your video and said... yup this is cheap and easy. Have your tools and took me no time. Thank you for the help on spacing.

wow……nice! But you have to get that tools first, and they way more then $20🙄
For the basic rack, you literally need a drill. The home center can cut the boards to length.
But the project it is not $20. Each hook is $11 ish. Two hooks are more than $20
