    the first few rogues/thief were trash. They werent good until 3rd edition.
    The reason why so many old books saw climbing as important, was because it was the only thief ability that you could actually rely on. As it was pretty much the only ability that wasnt a 15% chance of success lol.

      The old editions definitely had a problem when the Thief came out - there were no rules on being stealthy (since it was assumed everyone was sneaking through a dungeon) but then the Thief had a skill specifically for sneaking - which kind of meant no one else could do it? Maybe? Or maybe only the Thief had the chance to fail? Makes it a bit weird when looking at the whole game and only a single class has a skill for sneaking about.
