Used to drive this route regularly as 313’s were my first basic traction, whilst based at Kings Cross. Nice to see former colleague and driver John Murray on this video
"Remember, when applying the short-circuiting bar in the northern city line tunnels, you must always turn away and cover your eyes" So you won't get sparks flying at your eyes.
I think that's exactly how it's supposed to work in a non-urgent evacuation. The evacuation crew brings a number of hi-vis vests, which are given to passengers before they exit the train, and are collected when they leave the tunnel. Besides being visible, by counting the vests, they ensure every passenger who enters the tunnel, leaves it, and it prevents too many passengers from crowding into the tunnel at once. I think some systems use colored hats or cards on lanyards.
Actually the line used Standard tune stock till 1966 when the 1938 stock took over and the standard tube stock went to the Isle of Wight. The line was very spook and the tube trains looked like ghost trains coming out of the old huge tunnels. The stations did have a very dank spell to them as mentioned. One thing I remember was the eerie sounds the small tube trains made as they went along through those large bore tunnels, very different than the noise of a tube in the 11ft 8 tunnels on the tube. I swear that line was haunted.
13:50 You should ALWAYS cover your face when using that bar, even if the traction current has already been isolated! This is because you cannot rely on an emergency switch off to protect you from the current being accidentally re-energised.
@@RmsTitanic59 Some substations have automatic systems that will re-energise the rail after 15 seconds, to allow for possible transient conditions. There is no way to know if this has not happened since the first isolation - if the current was indeed isolated at all!
Only issues I have is not just with Essex Road station, as the emergency spiral staircase gate at booking hall-level is always locked!. Highbury presents another danger with two escalators and no other means of exit between Highbury and Drayton Park with an evacuation, unless at Highbury, passengers are sent up by tunnel bore to Drayton Park. And if Pool Street at Hoxton was the only evacuation point on the tunnel section before Old Street, where were the others between Old Street and Moorgate?.
false stairs have odd fire doors which cant be locked. Blue grilled gate has a pedlock on it (staff area). Evac onto the track to Drayton park. LFB would have a field day with anything that is locked and regularly check all stations
That's simply not true. I used to regularly use that station up until 2018 and I'd often nip down the spiral staircase to get to the platform, enjoyed the eeriness and it was better exercise than waiting for the lift. The fire escape can be accessed by double wooden doors that can be pulled open from the outside. The padlocked metal gate I'm not sure exactly what it is but I think it leads to the other side of the lift.
Yeah but the busker would have to evacuate too and would have no time to play music. I’m familiar with buskers. They play music at the Waterfront SeaBus terminal in Vancouver all the time. I always make sure I have change with me so I can tip them
6:50 Incorrect, foam can be used on fires involving accidental contact with electrical current not exceeding 35KV but are not safe for any intentional use on electrical current.
I find it interesting that here the main emphasis on those signs to not enter the tunnel is the fine. In Montreal's Metro, the emphasis on the warning sign is that there's 750 volts and that non-observance of the sign may have deadly consequences!
Those safety vests in the tube tunnel cabinets are filthy. Someone should clean them every once in a while so they remain “high visibility” and not “impossible to see due to a large accumulation of dust”!
There is an emergency exit sign at 15:58 -I'd guess it leads to an exit in the Gainsborough Studios apartment building (the line's former power station).
Lots of things for me to look out for next time I visit London and use the Tube! Emergency signage, cabinets and the like. I have never noticed that the Tube map hides a 'Station Closed' sign. Is that true at most stations?

"Remember, when applying the short-circuiting bar in the northern city line tunnels, you must always turn away and cover your eyes" So you won't get sparks flying at your eyes.
That’s one reason but I think the primary reason for covering your eyes and turning away is because of the resulting bright arc flash

what i watch in the night before going to bed at 3am: Train Safety Training
@3:26 I have to wonder why the lines Paul had to revoice sound like he was recorded in a wind tunnel.
It’s useful that all those passengers being evacuated at 15:21 had a HiVis Vest on them...
The elderly, mums with young kiddies, and visually impaired folk would need a hand on that old wooden ladder.
They must be bikers or something- oh wait, they’re not supposed to be on the Northern City Line, very naughty 😡
They must have high vis’ in the emergency cupboard

Also, the Greenbelt legislation caused London Underground to cancel the Northern Heights plan, so it was cancelled fully in February 1954.
