If you add to the fact that there are 2 valves on each side of each cylinder halves and they manage to open and close within the time a particular piston is away from them AND the rail manages to shoot a few drops of fuel within the same tme as well then it is fascinating. It gets even better when you imagine how a little bit of fuel can move such a weight forward in a short time.
engine engineering is just insane. Also keep in mind that the tolerances are INCREDIBLY small. V10s, V12s and V16s and especially the W16 only get more and more bonkers
@@Damien911 EV switch isn't happening anytime soon. We will probably be dead before that happens because they refuse to accept what a reality with the majority of drivers with EVs looks like. Countries are decommissioning nuclear, gas, coal, and hydro power plants because they are bad for the environment. Yet in CA for example, making that switch work would require covering the entire state in solar panels and windmills. It's just not going to happen and it's devastating for the environment. Now if they were talking about commissioning 10 nuclear power plants and having 25% of the grid be gas power to make up for the weakness of nuclear and renewable sources. Then they are talking about a realistic approach to getting everyone into EVs and I would worry about losing combustion engines.

Be as big while being even more reliable and not having to rev as high, high torque low end makes them efficient as well. Edit: I was gonna say add Too* Much Displacement. Most Flatplanes are less than 6 liters, meanwhile you can go up to 10+ with a crossplane.

Cross plane definitely sounds better IMO - the sound profile is beast-like (cross plane) versus insect-like (flat plane). I think without automotive bias the vast majority of humans would naturally gravitate to beastial baritone of the cross-plane V8. Also, the cross-plane V8 is simply superior to the flat-plane V8 for reliably holding really big power due to the lack of 2nd order vibrations. The best engine configurations (IMO) are the Inline 6, the 90 degree cross-plane V8 and the 60 degree V12. If any engine doesn’t come in one of the 3 configurations then they *should*.

I know very well how the internal combustion engine works BUT still to this day it blows my mind how the combustion cycle can even still work at high revolutions! You would think eventually the air/fuel mixture and exhaust would just start getting all mixed up with turbulence where nothing worked right or the air couldn't move fast enough, and that the lubrication even works at that rate is amazing, you would think that the top end would just seize up from heat and friction. The modern IC engine really is a mind blowing marvel of modern engineering.
I've always found the sound of cross plane American V8s very intimidating because of this low, oppressive gurgle growl. Like, don't mess with me. The flat plane V8s sound smooth as buttter and you clearly get an impression of speed out of them. Like, you won't be able to catch up with me.
The Voodoo is a flat crank V8. But its crankpin configuration (_ - _ -) is not that of a typical flat crank V8 (_ - - _). Thus, it sounds different from either of these.

I've always found the sound of cross plane American V8s very intimidating because of this low, oppressive gurgle growl. Like, don't mess with me.
The flat plane V8s sound smooth as buttter and you clearly get an impression of speed out of them. Like, you won't be able to catch up with me.
A v8 should rumble not cackle.

I've always find american v8 sounds boring until you drive inside one and feel the vibration etc. But I still choose italian v8 any day.

The Voodoo is a flat crank V8. But its crankpin configuration (_ - _ -) is not that of a typical flat crank V8 (_ - - _). Thus, it sounds different from either of these.

@@Ac3Mustang It IS a flatplane V8. But because its crankpin configuration and firing order are different from a typical flatplane V8, it is really every bit as different from a typical flatplane V8 as a crossplane V8 is. Compared to these two V8s shown here, the Voodoo is really a third type of V8.
@@Ac3Mustang The problem is that the sound of the Voodoo isn’t representative of the sound of a typical flat crank V8. To the best of my knowledge, the Voodoo is the only engine that uses that particular flat crank configuration. Most flat crank V8’s use the I4 crankpin configuration.
@@matthewstorm5188 ok but people use hemispherical engine(hemi)V8s when referencing american cross plane, but ls, 2v, and lt crossplanes are not ever in the conversation of differentiation. So yes, it's not the *NORMAL* but that doesnt make it not an option
