Most of our school pcs are crap but we do have a few macs for music.
All of my school PC’s run windows 7 even the laptops that were designed for windows 10

Looks amazing! Samsung really hit Apple hard this year and bounced back from the Note fiasco. S8 looks awesome, and your videos really bring out the best of this phone and its accessories

I don't understand why the manufacturers don't explore this desktop function for all smartphones. Theoretically any phone with OTG and MHL features can do this. Only small OS tweaks are necessary
You don't even need MHL. I do this with my Nexus 5x.

As I get older I'm finding I prefer the form factor of the phone rather than keyboard monitor. Out of my desktop, phone and chromebook. I'll reach for the phone to browse and watch video, the chromebook for typing an email. And the desktop occasionally for work and bits. But have really gone off the desktop, mouse, monitor form factor. Having said that my phone has a better spec than all my computers so why not! OSs like Ubuntu believed previously about the computer in your pocket format - so not quite sure why this hasn't caught on a little more. You could remote desktop given a good Internet connection.

Use your Samsung TV as a monitor and switch the sound output to the TV. Works great!!
As a student who can't afford a good laptop or pc, I think this is cool. I can sit at my desk and do all my work with a keyboard and mouse, watch youtube and surf the web, or whatever. I think it's brilliant.

Flash light on the phone can be used as a desk lamp. ;) It's ok to be on shortcuts.

I’m not as much of a Samsung fan, but I am impressed with the Dex. As phones get more powerful and capable, this will become a desktop neutralizer for those who do a lot of simple work.
This to me should be the future of desktops. Makes so much sense.

Great video. I just received my DeX. As a techie I know I'll make use of it somehow but before I realized it I see one HUGE drawback that I didn't think of until I went to set it in the DeX. It's rare for a dock of any kind to work with a phone that is in a case. Even a very thin case. So... to use this I have to pull it out of the case on a regular bases and some cases are real difficult to put on and take off. ugh...
Yours is the best video on this Dex topic that I've seen. Very smooth production and informative. Will be interesting to see if Samsung continues to improve both the Galaxy S9 and Dex for an even better experience in the future.

I feel that this sort of thing will be the future of desktop computers, in like 10+ years, or more.
I don't think that custom built PCs for gaming will go away, but I expect this kind of technology to be extremely mainstream in future, especially for productivity.

Very impressive to be honest. This implementation is frankly sufficient for most people who use their computer for media consumption purposes and light word processing only.
The creative department at Samsung are on an absolute blaze at the moment. Some incredible ideas and tech coming from them. What does Sumsung dust taste like Apple??

Hey Mike! Great video! It would be useful to see with more details how the MS Office suite works in DeX mode and how easy it is to replace a PC for basic Office tasks, email with handling of multiple attachments, how the file browser and folder management looks etc.
At least this dock does more than the Nintendo switch dock.

oh, probably just a little bit better. This one does make your phone into full desktop environment. Also displays UHD 4K on supported display. Nintendo Switch missed the 4K and requires module.
And it is over bulky.
Direkt Well the Dex is not instant like the Switch Dock.
Nintendo Switch isn't a PC, and it's included in the box, where's this one is really expensive (like the phone itself). And when it comes to games, Switch is definitely a console, it can game on a TV / monitor, where's this one is only for productivity. These two docks are not comparable.
The device is different, the doc isn't; other than the cooling solution and maybe some chips in it, as the Switch uses MyDP and it's dock as a DP-HDMI converter. Other than that, they're literally the same, the dock is nothing special other than a usb hub with Ethernet and HDMI adapters and a charging passthrough, and some way of the dock telling the phone that it's a DeX dock.

When you think about it a good desktop and laptop would come out at the same price as a dex and Samsung s8. I think of a smartphone as a computer anyway since I do most of my classwork on it. I think it's a futuristic idea. Just like past concepts with windows. Dex is more of a product aimed at people that actually use a computer.
What I'd like to see is them adding a micro USB adaptor and releasing firmware for the other Galaxy and Note phones that will support the DeX. This sort of thing would be perfect for students who usually need to do small tasks such as typing and reading emails.
Does the connector adjust enough to allow you to plug it in with a case?
this is actually pretty dope. kinda surprised how well it works. at least when it not bogged down a year later. really cool though for those without a home computer. they are out there.
hey guy`s i tried it out on a S20 series to s22 series by using a single HDMI to type C cable and it works.no need for DEX station but only if you need a keyboard and mouse!..other options is a HDMI to type C port with USB ports will work

It's quite cool to think that for those who just use a computer for light tasks will just need a phone and it'll be their main computing device; very streamlined approach.

Ry Thats what samsung wants you to believe. they havent done it, for two reasons.
1. Samsung is always half baked, remember note 7 and the bixby.
2. Its a he-said-she-said gimmick. Samsung would propose it to themselves and telling they dont have enough time just to say that idea originated from them. Wait for it when the iphone 8 comes out, youll see in the comment section "Apple copied samsung's idea"

Looks great, I think that will be very useful whenever you don't want to waste time turning on your PC and you don't have to do any difficult task
I enjoyed multimedia dock with Note 4 even though it was too laggy. After seeing this, i'll definitely get it if it'll be compatible with the upcoming Note 8 :)
What a weird idea, cant imagine anyone being excited to use this but it's definitely an interesting experiment. This might grow into something really compelling in the future
Hey man, I have just recently visited a Samsung store in SG and clarify with the staff. Samsung Dex does support 4K output but only if you switch to 'screen mirroring' hidden inside.

This may seem like a stupid question, but you do NOT have to use the ethernet cable with every time you're using the DeX Station, correct? You could just simply use the wifi connectivity through the phone?
Very thorough sir. I was wanting the dex station ever since I saw it came out. Now I want it even more lol. My s7edge is basically my pc at the moment because of everything it can do but I think the newer phones can do a bit more. Very cool.
Great device, my review will be up before the weekend. Although I'm interested to see the US edition includes a USB C cable and charger, whereas the UK edition does not. Something for me to add in for my video so if nothing else Mike this review was useful for that alone 👍👍👍😁😁

People are saying that this is only a gimmick. But in actuality its pretty useful as you can use Microsoft Office and other apps like Google Chrome that are more compatible with a computer setup. You can do a lot of things more efficiently with a mouse, keyboard and bigger screen. Had that not been true, then all laptops would become obsolete, which is not the case. If you guys want to know what a real gimmick is, that would be the crappy touch bar in the macbook pro.
S8 is one of the best out there, s8 is now a virtual reality device, s8 is now like a pc, s8 is god

The UI is pretty nice. I like it more than Chrome OS UI.
I think Microsoft has just updated office365 and has made word excel etc not work very well for the Samsung dex. It was working until the update by Microsoft

I'm curious about the audio switching as your voice changes dramatically a few times during the video. Both are clear, just different. Do you use a different mic at certain points?
Also, what's with the '1M' sub counter? Why doesn't it show the exact or approximate number? Will we have to wait until it hits 1.5M or 2M to see an increase?

Phones and tablets are basically for multimedia consumption, not heavy productivity. This turns your Samsung S8(+) phone into a half-fledged PC. Which is a pretty cool concept.

My point is even tho Samsung is working on new tech soluyions to expand electronics' possibilities, apple is reinvent a wheel again and again. Nobody needs emojis, animojis or 3d mojis, this is pathetic. And that's my point.

I think it will be fairly useful. it is just too bad they targeted businesses with this samsung dex. I imagine this would be a perfect way for students who just wanted some microsoft word and email capabilities for their study. It will be so much useful if they made a laptop enclosure with a slot for the S8 and poof, suddenly your S8 turns into chromebook competitor. especially with that much free space on the laptop enclosure, they can put a much bigger battery that power both the monitor and the phone.

this is a really cool accessory.
as good as it works, I don't see any actual scenario one would actually proactively use this. At home you'd take your laptop. On the go a tablet makes way more sense than carrying an extra mouse, cables and display. Great review though!
This would be cooler if they made a LeX, or laptop experience (DeX is desktop experience, though I'm not sure if Desktop is meant by the traditional sense of a desk computer or by the layout being a desktop as in the operating system; could make a L-DeX) and borrow some tricks from Windows Continuum and use the phone as the trackpad.
