- In this video I will show you a recessed electrical outlet that can be easily installed that will help hide plugs and make gaps between furniture and the wall MUCH smaller. This is also great for use as a receptacle for wall mounted TVs.

Do you have places in your home where this could be helpful? I know that I have quite a few!
Behind a bed without a headboard is one place.
I purchase 90-degree plug extensions that are about 12-16 inches long [not adapters] from Amazon for the receptacles that are behind furniture. It cuts down on what sticks out of the wall to less than the recessed outlet and 75% of the time when changing or attaching cords I no longer need to move the furniture.
This was my solution too. Much simpler than replacing the outlet.
This only works if whats being plugged in allows for extensions. My UPS for example, do not allow for any extensions.
I don't do electrical work like this often so when I do, I try to be extra safe. When you flipped the breaker off around the 3:15 mark, then tested the circuit to be sure it was dead with your tester... I would test the circuit with the tester first to be sure it was live so I'd know my tester lights were working, then flip the breaker, then make sure the lights on the tester all went out. I don't use my electrical tester often enough to trust it without doing that. Thank you for taking the time to share the content that you do. 👍🍻
The good ol live-dead-live test
Absolute must for wall mounted TV where you have the plug behind the TV. I just wish they had more options for things like chargers where some have the transformer in the middle of the cord so you don't have to plug the big box in the wall.
Man your knowledge is genius. I wish I had all that information stored in my brain because I need electrical work done on my new house. Keep up the great teaching!!!
I need all of the space I can get so thank you so much for the heads up on recessed receptacles cause I really need them.
What old is new again! We had those back in the 1950's and 60's so that the cord and plug for the kitchen's wall clock could be hidden directly behind the clock... for a clean and "wireless" look.
Yup! Thanks for the input!
Those are a great idea !
Thanks for sharing that!
You are very welcome! Glad you like them!
Appreciate it, thank you 👍🏼
My pleasure! Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback Tony!
this will be perfect, I’m getting ready to put a new outlet behind the refrigerator
Thanks. I’ve had some recessed outlets lying around forever, just wish they made them with sliding or hinged covers.
Good idea. 👍
Yeah, these can really come in handy in so many places. Thanks a lot for the feedback Clarence! Take care.
Interesting. Thanks, gef
Assuming there is room in the box. Most of my house was built in 1970 and the boxes are shallow, especially on the outside walls, the drywall is mounted on the cement block. BTW you can get flat plugs.
This is the 3rd video of yours I've watched, great stuff. Now, if you could do one on two way switches I'd love it. I have two switches for an overhead light and I don't know if one or both are bad or how to replace them (early 1970's) with what is currently on the market - too many wires for me to know to even trouble shoot.
Always find your videos interesting and done well, thanks for posting them.
I have multiple Amazon Echoes, aka Alexa, and they have a sizable transformer/power block thingie at the plug end. Same for phone and tablet chargers. I'm not sure the recessed box in the video would accommodate those; at the very least, it would take up so much space the second outlet would be blocked and unusable. Any suggestions?
Yeah every situation will be different. You just gave me an idea for a video I think. I use the Anker USB wall outlet for exactly what you are describing. In behind my nightstand by the bed is where I have mine installed on both mine and my wife's side and they are game changers! Appreciate the feedback!
😮😮😮 Those clock boxes are expensive for an inch I’d go for your first choice the 😊😊😊fold thing no bending at all there. 😊😊😊
Remind everyone that you will need a extra deep outlet box. To put all that inside it
Yeah I did mention it in the video. Thanks James!
Other than the measurements were taken at different locations from the old to the new; its still a good way to go.
Anyone have a recommendation for deactivating and hiding a light switch that powers a outlet? I've tried to find a video but I don't want to burn the house down or blow up my home computer that is powered by the outlet.Thx in advance!
"Install" is a verb. "Installation" is the word you're groping for.
I bet you’re the life of every party. 😂
So I’m not going to lie, but the 90 degree adapter actually looks (and works) better than that recessed receptor. I’d go push furniture right against it there is zero force on the plug, vs this setup that actually could still result in damage
really u should measure from wall not the wall plate
Yes, I did on the second measurements. Which actually means the results were better than shown.
The DIYer doing the work better know how to do drywall repair as well if they do put in a deeper box.
Shouldn't really affect the drywall.
Wow, your so wordy that I set the playback speed to 1.5
Go ahead. But when dealing with electrical I would rather be "wordy" and get good information out than be super expeditious and leave out important details.
@@HowToHomeDIY too much wasted time spent measuring plug protrusion, anyone with 2 functioning neurons got the point without all the repeated measuring.
@bobjoatmon1993 none of it was repeated. Every measurement was different. And while you feel that way there are many more that appreciated the exact numbers. You picked the shortest parts about the video though which is interesting.
@@HowToHomeDIY your kind of blind, aren't you?
OK, moving on.
@bobjoatmon1993 uhhh sure 😂
STOP copying videos from RUclips Channel “Fix This House”. You literally copied his same thumbnail!
Your comment is actually hilarious and hypocritical all at the same time. That is all I will say.
Yeah I watch a lot of DIY content and the How To Home guy is right, you’re a hypocrite. The Fix This House guy “copies” thumbnails and content from How To Home, Everyday Home Repairs, and popular drywall channels CONSTANTLY! I swear, any time I see How To Home or Everyday Home Repairs have a popular video, the Fix This House guy copies not only the idea, but the thumbnail and oftentimes the Title too. I’ve also noticed he’s copied the How To Home guy’s middle part of the video where he sometimes asks people to “like” the video if they are finding the video interesting. The Fix This House guy has copied that almost word for word. The fact of the matter is there is almost nothing new out there so these channels are going to have similar content but hopefully are adding something to it or doing it differently. Yes his thumbnail is similar to Fix This House’s but it’s not the same. Where the Fix This House guy has literally copied How To Home’s thumbnails and Titles. Also, @indesignwithshay, you look a lot like the Fix This House guys wife. Could it be either it is his wife or even possibly him using his wife’s account? Hmmm
I would not show the cheaper folding solution until after you do all the work. People will stop watching. Just kidding I like your videos but for a simple solution I think most will just deal with a gap. The pigtails and real estate space will be a problem with this type of receptacle. A lot of what ifs and work for an inch point 5
You know, I thought about that, but ultimately just decided it would be better for the viewer to leave it in there. You have me contemplating cutting it out now 😂. Thanks for the feedback!
What does it take you 20 minutes to explain how to flippin put a receptacle in
Well Tim, the video isn't even close to that long so that is an exaggeration. But there are a lot of small details that go into it to make sure it's done as well as it can be. It takes a little time to explain each one and to where people understand the why. On my channel I don't skip some of the small but important details like so many others. I cut out a ton of other details that many would find interesting but I do try to balance everything. But if you know it all I guess it feels like 20 minutes 🤣
The video is over 10 minutes so they can put an extra ad in the middle if they want. To be Frank, the people watching these types of videos are never going to do this anyways. It’s just entertainment.
@markm0000 10 minutes isn’t the mark to ad ads in the middle. This video is 10 minutes because that’s the shortest I could get it in order to get all of the information out. And not sure where you get the idea that not many would do this. It is a common issue that people want to address whether they know about it yet or not. Appreciate the comment though 🫶
The video’s just under 11 minutes. Maybe you should lay off the downers.
It took Timmy 20 minutes to watch a 10:52 video because he had to go back and rewatch over 90% to understand it.
That should answer Timmy's question.
