A friendly game of baseball, 1861 style

- When the Thames Base Ball Club hosted the Lyme Taverners on the lawn of Fort Trumbull State Park in New London, their game recalled an earlier era when sportsmanship and gentlemanly play was prized. Vintage baseball teams play by 1861 rules with a handmade ball and no gloves. And while players still have the competitive spirit, most prize camaraderie among teammates and opponents over being the winner according to the scoreboard.
Amazing the number of jerk comments about their shoes and Gatorade etc. Yes, they should dress in wool uniforms made prior to 1861 and found in pristine condition in an attic in Fall River Massachusetts in 2014, because to do otherwise would just confirm their hypocrisy. Oh, and they should only drink sewer contaminated water from shallow wells because 1861.
It’s relatively easy, and cheaper, to get cheap dress shoes and put in little metal spikes like they did in the 1860s and drink water instead of Gatorade though.
If Someone used a marucci aluminum bat, They’d look like the spawn of Satan ruining the game lol

Not really. Guys in the MLB throw much harder, but it doesn't look like it because of FPS on tv and angles.

Great video. Little known fact: The first video camera was invented in the 1850s. That's how the MLB was able to capture footage of games during the 1860s.
@Lighthouse in the Storm sadly this has been doctored by todays standards of digital technology. It’s no longer the original footage from 1860 ):
@Lighthouse in the Storm These guys here are just offering a modern take on MLB's video from 1861.

Edward Baker died in 2017 and was a A+ caliber human being. I primarily knew him in the context of our extended New England church community and didn't expect to come face-to-face with him when I clicked on some random old-timey baseball youtube video. Seems pretty fun.
I always thought gloves were part of the game since the beginning as a core element (like a ball or bat).
Cool to learn something new.

That "catching off one bounce is an out" was something i never knew...
Makes sense when you don't have a glove though
I want to know so much more about this..were there balls and strikes, was everything a force play, how many outs? List goes on.
@@je25ff Pretty sure the batter could request a high or low pitch from the pitcher during at least some of the 1800s. Can’t imagine the nightmares that would cause today.
@@je25ff My nephews played in a league like that. I’m not sure about the number of balls and strikes. But because it was a gentleman’s game, if the batter did not swing at a pitch, the pitcher would ask where he wanted the next pitch so he could hit it.
“Where would you like the pitch, kind sir?”
“Please put it a little closer. I could reach the last one.”
That rule would lead to so many arguments today lol
Oh yeah, the vintage baseballs great! My dad plays in the spring hill Tn league and I love it. So fun and such good sportsmanship

My dad used to play in a baseball league like this in a historical society when I was a kid. I remember I'd spend most of the day exploring the entire sight as a kid. There were trails deep off the beaten path that would lead to openings where old houses and other buildings that were not yet restored were I guess transported to. It was like walking through an abandoned village from the 1800s. Haven't thought about that place in a while.

+Nathan Busch Games must last years if foul balls aren't called strikes.
It reminds me of a fun time in college when I was walking to supper or somewhere past classmates playing intramural ball. I heard one guy complain about the staying of a ball hitting his hand. I shouted joyfully that they played baseball without gloves before the 1870s. He responded right back with a smile, "This is why they invented gloves!" Fun times!
I saw no one with a flask or smoking a dart on the bench. This is false.

This is so awesome.
not accurate, shortstop wasn't added in 1861
How do you not kill each other with line drives
Stable Genius you look like post malone
Yehudi Menuhin yeah but those cricket players are nowhere near as strong as MLB players with 90+ exit velocities
You wouldn't really get those kind of power hits in this game. The balls are "deader", being more loosely wound around the core so they absorb more energy from the bat. The bats themselves are heavier and more difficult to really get a high velocity swing on. Also, the guys playing these games aren't exactly Major League calibre. Nonetheless, there's still the potential for injury in this game being hit by a flying ball as there is in the modern game or in softball but I doubt anybody's going to be killed by a high velocity line drive in an 1860s style Base Ball game.

Aodhan Daly it's slow pitch though
Ball fouled back = Instant broken bone, most likely concussion or broken skull.
What kind of pussy would foul back a slow underhanded pitch?
Aodhan Daly second base would suck
Balls fouled back are dangerous because of the speed of the pitch... A slow pitch eliminates that danger. Are y'all really that dense?
We played this as kids in my neighborhood. Not because we were preserving history. We were just too poor to buy gloves.

As a baseball fan, this video is epic!
When he said a gentleman's game, I remember when I was playing baseball and I was batting. The ump said I was hit by the ball but I wasn't so I said "I didn't get hit." After that happened my coaches and parents told me to just take the base, even if it didn't hit me.
Honour is more important than taking something you didn't earn. Props to you sir..

If everybody's doing it, it's not dishonorable to take the base, it's just even. It's essentially a big prisoner's dilemma. I'm glad these folks in the video were able to solve it for themselves though.
