@AceRed I grew up with the DS version of this game, so I don't see the horror in this level either and just get nostalgic when it's brought up. I remember never knowing about the hidden city in this level and finding it by accident. It was the coolest thing ever to me as I thought I found some hidden secret and loved that there was this hidden city that I could go to and mess around in. SM64 is a truly fantastic game. I just wish I could play the DS game again with analogue support.
Fun fact: The paintings in SM64 are just portals to other places So somewhere the Mushroom World there exists a city that resembles Shibam, Yemen that has been completely submerged in water and built over to be used by enemy forces.

It says something like "the stars gave power to the paintings and created the worlds" if i remember correctly. I read that in the french version but it's gotta be universal. Wet Dry World is just the latest victim of younger generations being creeped out by stuff that soothed the older generations. Music boxes, china dolls, etc were soothing to our grandparents, but for us who had no emotional connection to such things, they became horror/creepypasta tropes because they reminded us of older, bygone times we didn’t experience; thus we associated them with the feelings of unfamiliarity peculiar to childhood (like we were somewhere we didn’t belong), mystery, ghosts, and even death

I’m 32, but only played completely through SM64 for the first time within the last calendar year, and I found nothing creepy about it at all. The underwater town star was super fun as Luigi in the DS version. My dude can torpedo across that tunnel! Even better yet, you can backflip-spin over there without having to set the water to the highest level upon entering the painting. Plenty of space to run on the water as well... fun, fun.
It's all fun and games until you accidentally find the devourer of worlds down there. Things can get way bigger in the ocean than on land and that's one reason I'm staying the fuck out.
Wet Dry World is really cool honestly. Besides the gimmick with the water level, I love the underground city area. It reminds me of like the old 70s/80s Lego City sets for some reason. I think it’s how the colors are a bit all over the place but the floor is a plain grey, sort of like the big grey baseplates. Maybe that’s a weird comparison but that’s always how it came across to me. Really fun level. Also the idea that the top part of the level was this vast underwater city too was cool with that skybox. I’ve heard some say it’s creepy, but I think it’s kinda fun to imagine a whole huge city beneath the sea. Like a modern Atlantis, or at least modern for 1995.
The inner child in me is thinking this would be a great place to slide around in the water. The grown adult part of me, however, can't help but think of how filthy that water must be.
Wet-Dry World was honestly one of my favorite stages to visit and still is. The stage that did creep me out was Hazy Maze Cave, which oddly enough has the same stage music.

My favorite iteration of the song is the DS version, as the ambiance version that plays when you enter the town is spookier to me. Also, since this a flooded subway in Japan, this is the closest we can get to a real Wet-Dry World to my knowledge.
