  • This is an easy DIY method to age terracotta pots using yoghurt. I also show you how to plant tulips and protect them from wildlife! We used new frost-proof terracotta pots from our local independent garden centre. These are 40cm diameter (about 15inches) and about 35cm tall.
We simply took an old paintbrush, and we painted the pots all over with yoghurt. We also gathered some scraps of moss from the garden and rubbed it over the pots to encourage the algae and moss to grow.
We left them for about a month in a shaded spot in the garden.
We then planted 30 tulips in each pot at about 3 times the depth of the bulbs and then protected the bulbs from wildlife with chicken wire. The mix we used to fill the pots is two-thirds peat free compost to one-third grit. There is a link to the peat-free compost we use down below this video, this is not a sponsored ad, but I think it’s great peat-free compost.
I hope this has been useful and interesting but do let me know if you have any questions. I will post a video once the tulips are blooming so do subscribe to this channel so that you don’t miss the video.
It’s difficult to know how to express myself on social media when there is so much sorrow and devastation in the world we live in, particularly in Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine.

Thats awesome, and accelerated. My new terracotta pots that I planted hyacinths in 9 weeks ago have already aged naturally as my garden is North aspect with minimal sun.Great job !

Thanks so much Naffy - you're lucky to be able to age your tubers without the help of yoghurt!

I have two huge pots framing my door and they have green moss growing on them. I may be more attached to the moss than the shrubs in the pot! 🤣

I have aged terracotta pots (some are 30 years old_) but they do look very different from those with yogurt But those are nice Does it last or will it wash away in the rain ?

Hi Lisa, yes, I agree, it's not a perfect replica but they do look good and it hasn't washed off in the rain. I think by the time the coating washes off, in years to come, hopefully the pot underneath will have aged considerably and be less 'bright orange'! 😁💚

this might be a silly question, but what kind of yoghurt should one use? i'm planning to try this technique on a terracotta base of a lamp. thanks so much!

Hi Manu, not silly at all - I had no idea when I first started. I've always used just any old cheap yoghurt - it really doesn't have to be special. Good luck with your lamp base 👍🏼

      You should use peach yogurt

Looks like the pots got moldy on the outside. Careful not to breathe that in.

Hi there, it's just algae, not cold. the white bits are salts from the terracotta. Thanks for watching.
