The Long Ryders fue un grupo estadounidense de rock, formado por varios músicos que son multiinstrumentistas. El grupo está formado por Sid Griffin (guitarra), Stephen McCarthy (guitarra), Tom Stevens (bajo) y Greg Sowders (batería y percusión). Se formó en Los Ángeles, a comienzos de los años 80, originalmente asociado con un movimiento denominado Paisley Underground.
Con un sonido reminiscente de Gram Parsons, Buffalo Springfield y The Flying Burrito Brothers, se anticiparon al country alternativo de los 90. El antiguo miembro de los Byrds, Gene Clark, colaboró cantando en "Ivory Tower", un tema del disco de 1984 "Native Sons".
El grupo se disolvió en 1987, volviéndose a reunir en 2004 para una breve gira europea. Tras otra larga separación, el grupo se ha vuelto a reunir en 2009, así mismo separándose ese mismo año.

And that was the end for them, unfortunately. They became the whipping boys for all the other record company whores who accused THEM of "selling out".

This band heavily inspired Uncle Tupelo & Son Volt & neither were close to this greatness. I only say this because arrogant fake holes like Tweedy and Jay wannabe Neil Young Farrar will never mention or give this band credit !
Yeah...Uncle Tupelo & Son Volt are so over-rated it's a joke, the 80s had many Americana groups much better.
You can add Peter Case to that list .
Wilco consistently gets credited with igniting the roots rock revival ( especially for Mermaid Avenue) but anybody familiar with Case's career will tell you that Lightnin' Hopkins, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt have been prominent in the guys live songbook since the early 70's - when he was busking on the streets of SF's North Beach.
