      Fun fact of the day! Items in Morrowind have an owner tag that indicates who they belong to. This is why a merchant will see their item when you try to sell it to them. However, the plot thickens, and if you then go somewhere people can't see you and drop the stolen item, the item's ownership will be transferred to you! Hope this helped :)

      Except when you break a law or are attacked by an enemy. Even if they know how badass you are and how many wizards and creatures and dragons you've slain they still somehow think they can kill you. Like a common bandit on the road will be like give me your money and pull a knife. Meanwhile you are standing there with a enchanted sword daedric armor and a hundred shouts and spells. But sure that knife is real intimidating...

    • @888isthetruth7
      @888isthetruth7 5 лет назад +13

      @George Corbul yes there are. One that I know of is near white run. If you find that big bridge in the mountains. Basically there is like a valley ish area where there is a road that goes under the bridge and on either side are small mountains or big hills. There is a building with stairs to go up and there is a bandit on the road near the door. More bandits will be inside and on the bride and such.
      The one on the road will usually threaten you and not just out right attack. If you don't hand over money then he/she will attack.

      Another problem with Skyrim's story is that after you complete it, people still treat you like trash as if you didn't just save Tamriel. Seriously, the citizens tell you to get out of their way, the guards still make jokes about you, and worst of all is that nobody acknowledges your the dragonborn. I've installed mods to have NPCs actually respect you after the main questline, and even other questlines completed, just so I can have a sense of notability in the world.

    Morrowind had alternate ways to beat Dagoth Ur using workarounds, even if you did kill an essential NPC. The freedom to straight up kill anyone (including Vivic), more factions (with multiple religious orders!), and far more weapon styles made the game feel more free than any other.

    The best thing about Morrowind--and the single thing that sets it apart from every other Elder Scrolls game that's followed it, and most other RPGs period, for that matter--happens right at the end of the main quest. You've fought and suffered and worked and bled to prove yourself to the various houses who have named you Nerevarine, you've collected Sunder and Keening and Wraithguard, you've slaughtered your way across Red Mountain and down into the tunnels below it to confront Dagoth Ur himself, and when you're finally face to face with him, he asks you if you're really Nerevar reborn.

I usually skip the main quest in Elder Scrolls games until I just figure why the hell not get around to it a decade of two later. I've never seen a dragon in Skyrim ever past the intro cause I don't meet people out in some field to check out a supposed dragon. I just let the quest lie and Skyrim is free of their version of cliff racers the whole time. Stop after the Hero of Kvatch title is won in Oblivion and NEVER talk to Martin in Kvatch or later in the refugee camp and there are never any oblivion gates ever in Oblivion except the very first one. Starting a dialogue with Martin is what causes the gates to spawn software-wise in other words. Main quest lines have always totally bored me so I don't see the point in doing them.

      @bobiboulon 5 лет назад +73

      @George Corbul Yep, the Elder Scroll lore explain they are different subspecies. But I think the reality behind this is: Less work. If every playable character has the same form, it's less work for animation, armor design, and even game balance (if I remember correctly, Khajiit and Argonians couldn't wear shoes in Morrowind).
      And don't get me wrong: I'm not implying that people at Bethesda are lazy, but there's (nightmarish) time and money management involved in game devellopement, and I'm pretty that someone took the decision to have humanoid legs for every playable character for time and ressources reasons.

      You can still read the journal entiries in Skyrim too which there are a ton of too as well as reading all the interesting books and etc. There is a ton of writing put into the Skyrim (to compare books in vanilla Skyrim had total of 334k words. Oblivion with all expansions had 265k words. Morrowind plus expansions had 133k words.). The only difference in Skyrim is you are not in a blank undiscovered world. Most of the things already discovered by someone else and you just mark them on your map which makes so much sense to have a full map of a region existed for a very long time. You just have to look at your map and go there, you still explore the world on your own, fast travel is only usable once you discover a place so that's not that bad either. Most of the NPC have unique dialogues instead of copy-paste dialogues of Morrowind so it is always interesting to talk with people in Skyrim. IMO what made Morrowind a great game is our imaginations and the Morrowind as a region.

If you started a new game and knew where to look from previous plays, you could obtain endgame weapons, armor, and items. In Oblivion and Skyrim, the weapons and armor you find tend to level up along with you as a character. Morrowind had platters and cups worth 500+. Balmore had the Sword of White Woe, which was a super good weapon to obtain early on. You could literally barter and haggle on prices when selling to a vendor. The levitate spell allowed you to fly, and find hidden areas deep within cave systems and tombs. Skooma and moon sugar actually made you crack-head strong and crack-head fast. I once ate 50 pounds of moon sugar and drank 30 skoomas. I stripped down and stood on the bottom right shore. I'm surprised you didn't mention that in Morrowind, if you became a vampire, you could suddenly start talking with vampires. Before being turned, vampires acted like mobs. They'd attack you, and that was about it. After you became one of them, you were TRULY one of them. In Skyrim and Oblivion, even after you're turned, they still attack you like they're nothing but mindless monsters.
    Another great Morrowind feature was the overall freedom to become completely overpowered through enchantments without charges. Skyrim enchantments kind of suck. They're all down to earth, and they all basically say "We don't want you to be unrealistically overpowered." Not at all fun compared to enchanting all your gear with levitation and basically being able to fly everywhere, or complete invisibility and being able to kill anything and everything without any resistance.
    Sure, those abilities made the game a breeze, but it was so much fun to make it your mission to become the ultimate godlike player. And in Skyrim (and to a lesser degree Oblivion), all of that was basically taken away from everyone as a way of placating players who, I guess, complained that it was possible to do such things and make the game too easy.
    Every awesome thing you can become in Skyrim is carefully balanced to ensure that it's never quite awesome enough. You're a vampire lord now? Cool! You're still only marginally more powerful than any enemy you'll fight, you have massive weaknesses, and you'll probably want to find a cure eventually, because your existence is painfully penalized to add "realism."
    How about the guildmaster of the mages guild. You're the big top dog there now, you must have access to spells and abilities that you thought never existed in the world before. Nope, you're just the same dude with a room of plants. Thank goodness I worked so hard, now I can make a few more useless potions without having to search the world for ingredients for potions I don't give a shit about.
    Or, I could be a werewolf! See Vampire above. An "ability with affliction" that once again leans very heavily in the direction of affliction. You're not really much stronger than you were before, you don't get +30 to your run and jump stats, you're not uber in any discernable way.
    I wish they wouldn't go in the direction they are, but Elder Scrolls games seem to be focusing more and more on ensuring people can't think outside of any systems (box) that Bethesda intended them to. You can be a super uber strong player, but it must be entirely within the realm of conceivability, regardless of the fact that it's a friggin fantasy game.
    It feels like Bethesda wants to ensure that players don't feel special in the world of Tamriel, and in that case, what's the point of even existing in the world, if I'm just another being limited by the same limitations as the NPCs I happen to meet?
    Skyrim could've been better, it's good, fun in a lot of ways, but it's certainly lost a lot of the magic of the games before it. Oblivion lost some magic that Morrowind had, Skyrim lost a little bit more. I feel like the next Elder Scrolls game will have super unbelievably realistic graphics, but feel much more like playing Second Life Fantasy, than an actual Elder Scrolls game.

    • @mesodini246
      @mesodini246 Год назад

      Is it really streamlined though? What does that even mean. An RPG is supposed to allow freedom and player choice, but consequences as well. Morrowind allowed complete freedom and consequence, whereas skyrim was much more linear, and the world wouldn’t respond to your choices as much, to the point where certain starting areas will treat you the same no matter how far in the game you are. The skill and attributes allow the player to choose how they play. Morrowind allowed for all types of builds. Skyrim had OP stealth archer, Wizard, and warrior. “Streamlining” is just downgrading.

    I have a bit of an issue with your second point about essential NPC's and this is why: In Morrowind, NPC's were static and probably weren't going to be killed outside of the player's choice. But in Oblivion and Skyrim, there NPC's have radiant AI and thus go about their lives even when the player isn't present. and thus have a greater likelihood of being killed outside of the player's decision.
    This increases in Skyrim, with random Vampire and Dragon attacks picking off a few NPC's in my game, entire questlines could be lost and playthrough's could be broken and the player would have no control over it. Thus, Morrowind having no essential NPC's and Oblivion and Skyrim having essential NPC's aren't really comparable.

      You mean, like they already do? Sure, they're invincible to all forms of death but that ,makes more sense than having them be invincible to everything but the player. How is that immersive? Because that's what this essential NPC complaint is born from right? A lack of immersion.
      If an NPC is unkillable unless the player kills them, that makes the issue all the more obvious to me. What they should have done is removed their essential status after there role in the quests were done. What you're suggesting isn't a solution.

    • @rickymartin4457
      @rickymartin4457 6 лет назад +6

      "If an NPC is unkillable unless the player kills them, that makes the issue all the more obvious to me"

Isn't that essentialy the same thing I suggested in the end with the difference that he can now be killed by Dragons and wildlife too? Whats your point man?

    • @role-playingginger6798
      @role-playingginger6798 6 лет назад +10

      "So Dragons beating up Jarl Balgruuf for three hours after you come back to turn his last quest in, only for him to die afterwards seems more realistic to you?" When the hell does that happen in the game?
      "Isn't that essentialy the same thing I suggested in the end with the difference that he can now be killed by Dragons and wildlife too?" You were suggesting that only the player be able to kill essential NPC's, the difference is rather big.
      "Whats your point man?" Well, originally it was that the complaint of essential NPC's outside of Morrowind is retarded, absolutely dumb. And I've already explained why, now it's that your half-measure solution is dumb. You're happy for developers to continue half-assing their games but just in a different way? I don't see the point in complaining if the solution that'd make you happier is just a different method of lazily pretending to solve the problem.

    • @rickymartin4457
      @rickymartin4457 6 лет назад +1

      That doesn't happen in game but according to your suggestion it could.
      I agree, just make essential NPCs killable by not only the player but also wildlife or you know, just ensure that they don't wander into dangerous areas. New Vegas seems to be able to pull that off as an example. Still my suggestion was meant as a compromise and while it's not realistic, neither is your suggestion for a fact, if you want to turn this into an realism argument.
      You seem to atleast agree that essential NPCs are also a half-assed, if not outright bad idea yes? Give the player at least the option to kill an important NPC when he so desires doesn't sound that bad to me, but yes, I would prefer if they could be killed by all kinds of creatures.

    I've said this in videos elsewhere on RUclips, but I will say it here: Morrowind is a toolbox. NOT a sandbox, a toolbox. You choose, within the confines of the world, the who, what, why, where, and how. You choose your race, class, and birthsign, then you are tossed out into that open, careless world.
    But...that's not the end, that's the beginning. YOUR beginning. Your journey. From there you choose where you go. You decide what to do, where to go, how you do it, and more. Sure, I don't deny that it can be overwhelming, but you're also given one goal to begin with: Talking with Caius.
    Hell, if you DO talk with Caius before you are level...uhh...5 I think, he'll give you some money, say, "Hey, go join a guild, learn some skills, get some people talking about you, then come back to me when you feel prepared." So now you again have that freedom, and it's not hard to find several factions to join within Balmora. And so from there you can start some faction quests, get some more money and otherwise get your character more established.
    But yes, you go from basically a nobody to a somebody. In a way it makes sense too as you rise through the ranks, you will go do other things as well, like the main questline or hell maybe even just journey out on your own and see what you come across. That's the true beauty of Morrowind.
    Also on #5: It's not just your 'titles' but everything in Morrowind is earned really. Membership in guilds is obtained by both merit (doing quests) and skills. You can be the savior of Morrowind and Nerevarine, but if you SUCK at magic and can barely cast a fireball you are not doing to achieve very high ranks in the Mages Guild no matter how much work you do for them. Other things really do feel earned in the end because you HAVE gone through so much.
    You didn't become a powerful archmage because you went through a few linear quests and then boom you're the leader...no, you did all the quests, sure, I don't deny that, but you also went out and became a powerful mage on your own, you are proven to be skilled as well as proven to be loyal and able to do much for the guild. Ergo when you finally achieve a high rank and are told about a couple of powerful artifacts you know that only happened because you're powerful already and respected, and that you will achieve even greater feats with those artifacts at your side.
    On a similar note, enchanting items. In Skyrim enchanting is essentially 'another' power boost, another means of gaining more strength. In Morrowind it really is too, but the freedom, the ability to choose from SO many options, so many combinations to put on your equipment is what made it so great. Like I could take a ring in Morrowind and enchant it with.... the ability to cast a powerful fireball spell, or have a PERMANENT health regen as long as it was equipped, OR bound summons, OR permanent invisibility! So many options and choices that were just waiting for you to discover and come up with. Once again, toolbox.
    PS: I don't deny for a second the graphics haven't aged well, and even mods can only do so much.

      i've played ES since arena and i agree with every one of your points, especially about earning your way in the guilds. the first time i played through the mages guild in skyrim i was so disappointed and angry at bethesda. i had to take a small break before continuing because it was just so phoned in. even now when i play through it i break up the mages guild quests with any other side quest that's magic related. then i set various goals for my skills for each stage of the mages guild. This is why Morrowind lives on as one of the best ES games...they really involved you in whatever you were doing...it wasn't just some check box you filled and moved on.

    the options on armor sets are what I missed the most in TESIV and TESV. Not only that you could have a giant pauldron on your shield arm while having non on your sword wielding right arm but also that finding a matching set of armor was really rewarding. You want to know why people in Skyrim are labled as essential?
    Because the world is different.
    In Morrowind, Monsters for the most part stayed way outside of cities and settlements, and essential characters where most of the times in cells that where not in the slightest harmful.
    In Skyrim characters move around freely. Monsters come inside cities (mostly dragons, vampiers, cultists) and so you are not longer the only threat for them.
    Imagine Delphine would have been killed by the newly resurected Dragon that Alduin summoned. In that case you would have no chance to ever finishing the game, and it wasn't your fault.
    But I give you that, they could have taken the essential status once they are no longer needed.

    Really have to put into perspective what Bethesda and the Early Elder Scrolls games were. An incredibly small studio of dedicated RPG enthusiasts creating very experimental games as passion projects, with sales and revenue being viewed only as an essential afterthought to recoup production costs and pay for the development of future titles. Things change with success. It sucks that they do but that's how businesses work. You aren't going to find these kind of quirky games unless you look to indie titles. Anything Bethesda ever puts out now is going to be an overly manufactured product with a massive budget and hundreds of people working behind the scenes. That setting doesn't allow for personality or risks. Innovation isn't cost effective.

    Could be a cultural difference though to be honest. Man tend to believe things on a whim when there are no other answers in site. It's been seen many times throughout our history from religion, justice, war, etc. Just one example being the Salem Witch Trials. Man are easily persuaded. The Dunmer might just be smarter than that and require more evidence for belief in Morrowind. Compared to the unintelligible and impressionable humans of Skyrim. Buuuuut in reality, it's probably more of a poor design decision on Bethesda's part for Skyrim 😅.

    Another thing I loved about Morrowind was the dialogue. I could spend 10-15 minutes talking to some random priest about all the diseases and the Nine Divines. In Skyrim, most of the dialogue only lasts 2-3 minutes, and none of it makes you wanna find out more about the world you were in. Plus, in Morrowind different people had different things to say about a subject, some people would praise Dagoth Ur and hate you, and someone else would adore you and hate Dagoth Ur. In Skyrim literally everyone you meet except for the generic bandit praises you and just go through their 10 generic lines of dialogue.
    Oh, and what made Morrowind's dialogue system even better, was that basically none of the NPCs had a voice actor when you talk to them, letting your imagination run free of how they sound like. In Skyrim basically every Nord has the same voice actor, its unrealistic and just makes me want to avoid dialogue altogether sometimes.

    • @Winnetou17
      @Winnetou17 4 года назад +12

      Yeah, in this context, having full voice actors is actually a down side. It skyrocket the costs, bringing down the amount of dialogue and the variety of voices. In Morrowind, reading at your own pace (or immediatelly skipping it) is actually more immersive and convenient, in some way. Too bad it will never come back in AAA titles :(

    • @AsellusPrimus

      As Elder Scrolls became a bigger name, they wanted to appeal to a broader audience. Skyrim is fairly casual-friendly (despite having tons of content still), followed by Oblivion, then Morrowind is more for the hardcore enthusiast, while Daggerfall is for the incredibly enthused. There's always more pressure to please more people when you get famous.

  • @danielpage3488
    @danielpage3488 4 года назад +2

    Also, the shop keepers would actually wear weapons and armour that you sold to them and switch it up, and the looting system was so much better. you could find yourself way out of your comfort zone with enemies too powerful for you to attack. but if you did manage to somehow kill them, maybe with the help of a powerful potion you came across by chance then the loot would be equally powerful giving you a real sense of achievement and adventure when it didn't just all level up with you. i miss this so much.

    This video didn't mention my biggest gripe with Skyrim, and with Oblivion. They really nerfed the quest system in the last 2 games. In Oblivion and Skyrim, you could only join the 4 "guilds", plus a civil war faction in Skyrim. In Morrowind, you could join 10 or 11 groups, each with pretty expansive quest lines. Plus, you had to earn your promotions by getting better at the skills and attributes that each group favored. In Skyrim, the Companion and Mage quest lines were pretty meh, and as this video did indicate, you didn't really earn the right to become the head of any of the guilds in Skyrim. In Morrowind, you did. Plus in Morrowind (and in Oblivion), you could craft your own spells and make them uber powerful. Graphically, Skyrim was of course much better. But I agree that Morrowind was, gameplay wise and in regard to writing, a much better game.

    • @greenscheme2040

      I wish they had kept the Morang Tong in Oblivion and also that you could still join the Legion. (I'd love to have joined the Morang Tong after I did the Dark Brotherhood so I could destroy the DB in the end). They did have a 5th "non-guild" thing in doing the whole Daedra quest lines and a 6th in the collector's quest line with the Indiana Jones feel to it (on purpose). But the Thieves and Dark Brotherhood quests in Oblivion were the best in any game so there is that. And then the one add-on you could do the Knights of the Nine which was a guild-like group.
