It's really insane how 808's was rated as average when nowadays, it's the blueprint for most pop music, be it hip hop or anything else.

Considering his reputation under the public eye, it's very easy to critique anything he releases, despite 808s, MBDTF, and Yeezus being ALMOST instant classics. I don't personally believe he is at the same lyrical level as Joey BadaSS, Old Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, etc. but he most definitely has something to say in 95% of the music he has released since '04 and is more impactful in the way he conveys his messages than the people I just mentioned

Also in my opinion it means "suicide" as in the term "career suicide". After the Taylor incident everyone told him he just committed career suicide and that he will never be able to work in the music industry again. And then later on in the same part he says, "Now this'd be a beautiful death" meaning that if this really is the end of my career, I'm going out swinging by releasing the greatest single work of art that I can.

    • @robbieproebstle1314
      @robbieproebstle1314 7 лет назад +22

Wade Wilson you have the words musician and songwriter confused. A good musician can make music sound good, a good songwriter can write that music themselves. Taylor Swift is an example of someone who has thrived due to being able to write their own music and own the production work surrounding it. Kanye also writes his own lyrics. All that being said none of that is a reason to not like a musician, as we all need help in some aspect of our songwriting. Additionally, they’re busy people when they’re on tour they sleep and perform that’s their life. The music industry isn’t as simple as people think it is, the more successful you become the more complicated your life becomes as well.

In popular culture, 'Runaway' is considered the greatest and most important song in his oeuvre, but I think with time, 'POWER' will be considered the most important song. There's a lot of layers to this song, both lyrical and musical, that are nothing short of mad genius.

Some of these comments are baffling. Kanye West objectively should be regarded as a contemporary David Bowie. Critics love him, Grammys love him, he sells tons of albums, each one of his albums are stylistically different from the last, he's shaped the entire sound of popular music at least three times, he puts out challenging/experimental albums like Yeezus. Under any way you can measure it, he is THAT good. If people don't dig him, it's more on their personal bias against him/ and or hip hop- Not because he isn't "good."

Let me put this straight for ya’ll Rock nerds.
He earned his attitude, nobody believed in him but he still made in music. He worked his way to the top, can I say the same for your favorite artist?
If you have problem with his Attitude and self confidence, it means ya’ll better like to be crippled by the society than raise above it.
Kanye has changed mainstream music 3 times. Can I say the same for your favorite artists?
Michael Jackson used to play Kanye’s album 808’s & heartbreaks to his kids. Great artists like Paul McCartney and Elton John have worked with Kanye. They all can see his greatness but sadly ya’ll can’t.
Here’s the list of people who appreciate Kanye:
    Lou Reed
    Michael Jackson
    Bruce Springsteen
    Paul McCartney
    Noel Gallagher
    Rick Rubin
    Liam Gallagher
    Elton John
    Elon musk
    Jack White
    Mick Jagger
    Herbie Hancock
    Marilyn Manson
    Adele
    Nas
    Bono
    Lana Del Ray
    Trent Renzor
    Axel Rose
    Madonna
    Eminem
    Randy Newman
    Drake
    Chris Martin
    Adam Levine
    Jay-z
    Sam Smith
    Beck
21 Grammys, 3 albums on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time"
MBDTF, late registration, college dropout, also on Rolling Stone's the 40 most groundbreaking albums of all time - 808s & Heartbreak,
and 6 multi platinum critically acclaimed albums.
Have anyone of you ever heard any of his songs? NOBODY can beat him sonically, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a 10/10 album.

The pretentiousness of the rock community pisses me off. I'm a rock fan myself, I love bands like Radiohead, The Smiths, The Clash, Joy division, Stone Roses, The Beatles, Oasis etc. But the idea that every genre of music is superficial unless it has a guitar in it is ridiculous. What makes Lou Reed a great artist and Kanye West not? Why should we take the Manic Street Preachers' political commentary anymore seriously than Kendrick Lamar?

    • @wilsonsilva2918
      @wilsonsilva2918 7 лет назад +8

Abdul Deco as a elitist myself, rap is the only genre i cannot defend as a form of music, the problem isnt much that we hate all non guitar music, but that on pop culture non guitar music is all there is, and yes we dont need to listen to it, but when it is so prevalent in society that at 2am in the morning i have random assholes blasting this shit while im trying to sleep really drives in the factor, combine that with the fact that this style is driving most rock groups to indie hell and straight up drove prog to extinction
AS WELL as the fact that since this style is so basic and lazy it becomes what most people think music should be, and artists that already had enough trouble breaking the mold become the ones that people think arent making real music
But you know what, if despite all that, you still think it is acceptable to consider a black dude talking about how much money he has or how many bitches he fucked is music, than maybe you deserve to listen to that shit.

    • @wilsonsilva2918

    • @rainpersona9406
      @rainpersona9406 7 лет назад +213

Wilson Silver I said artist. And you do realise there are lots of stereotypical parallels between both genres? I don't think any musical genre has been more associated with drugs and sex than rock and roll but hey it was David Bowie so that makes it fine! There are plenty of great socially conscious hip hop artists such as Kendrick, Kanye, Nas, Pac, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy and so on. To Pimp A Butterfly incorporated jazz and imo is the definitive 2010s album that captures the bleakness of the world we live in. And that's a hip hop album that discusses race relations, racial injustice, hypocrisy, fame, materialism, guilt, suicide, ego and power. For every one Sex Pistols there are a thousand mediocre bands, this applies to all genres.

The only talented artist I've heard bash him is matt Bellamy and he's a giant douche, and even he dialed it back. His freind/collaborator Rhymefest criticized his ego and some of his actions and obviously hes had issues with Jay z over the last year. But that's all personal stuff versus music stuff, it's very hard to find someone in the industry who has bad things to say about his music.

Gallzatron Taylor Swift's critical acclaim doesn't come anywhere close to Kanye's, and I'm not saying you can't not like Kanye, it's not a matter of opinion at all. The man is innovative and has pushed the genre of hip hop further, that makes him a genius, it doesn't matter if you like him or not. For instance, I'm not a huge fan of the Beatles, but for me to say that they were not geniuses and that they didn't innovate music and push music forward would be completely ignorant of me.

The analysis in this video has a, "Well yeah, no shit" vibe. Not terribly insightful. And he didn't even talk about the best part of the song; at the end of the 2nd verse.
"My childlike creativity, purity and honesty
Is honestly being crowded by these grown thoughts
Reality is catching up with me
Taking my inner child, I’m fighting for custody
With these responsibilities that they entrusted me ..."
Polyphonic really cherry picked lyrics to support a very simplistic interpretation of this song imo

dictionaryofwords You cut off at the best line lol. That diamond/dying man homophone for his Jesus piece was too ill.
And I agree, he also should’ve mentioned the fading out echo of ‘so exciting’ to sound like ‘suicide’ which segues into the bridge section where the lyrics refer to jumping from a window in reference Donny Hathaway’s suicide death and how the only way out from fame as a black man is to go crazy and fall from the top. No coincidence Donny Hathaway also has schizophrenia which ties back in to the whole ‘21st Century Schizoid Man’ thing, and also no coincidence the whole bridge basically parallels Kanye’s ‘career suicide’ when he jumped on stage to interrupt Taylor Swift and made himself so much of a public enemy that even the president called him an asshole.

Honestly, those "rock fans" who hate kanye are the plebs of the rock world. They're the dads who only listen to stale bands like AC/DC and Nirvana. I have almost never witnessed a person who likes experimental/art rock (David Bowie, Lou Reed's various projects, radiohead, etc.) hate on an experimental artist like Kanye.

@@davereyez4721 I listen to rock and hip hop equally and the same can also be said for a lot more hip hop fans. A lot of rappers write rock references in their lyrics that bring out their message more. However this goes over a lot of people's heads because they dont listen to the music being referenced. It's not a horrible thing. But I think everyone in all genres should be more open. It's not in one particular genre.

I mean power is great, but Kanye's best verse is on gorgeous. "penitentiary chances, the devil dances
And eventually answers to the call of Autumn
All of them fallin’ for the love of ballin’
Got caught with 30 rocks, the cop look like Alec Baldwin
Inter century anthems based off inner city tantrums
Based off the way we was branded

Gallagher also discussed how Kanye West influenced album opener "Fort Knox," an ambling, psychedelic instrumental track. "On the day that Kanye released that track 'Fade,' it fuckin' blew my mind," he says. "And I go into the studio and I'm going, 'Wow, have you fuckin' heard this Kanye track?' ... I've always loved that track by him called 'Power.'" Holmes suggested he write a track like that. "And I'm like, 'What? fuckin joking, are ya? I'm no rapper.' He had the idea of, 'Let's pretend we're doing a track for Kanye and we're going to send to him.' And as it was going along, I was going, 'This is amazing. He's not getting this.' So the reason why there's no singing on it is we had this idea we were going to send it to Kanye and then [throws middle finger in air fck it. Kanye's influence has no boundaries

I think one thing Power did so well as a hiphop song is the audio engineering behind it. The song was so well mixed and mastered despite having so many layers of instruments playing at the same time. The song remained punchy and each instrument has clarity even after putting it through distortion effects.

His personal life is personal and what he chooses to do with it is his decision to make. Just because he's a celebrity doesn't give you the right to infringe on his right to privacy and be judgmental.
Music-wise, his body of work defines him as a musician and above that an artist, not me or any other individual or group of individuals. If you can't appreciate that the general consensus is that he's one of the most influential artists of this generation to the point that Elon Musk personally nominated him for Time's Person of the Year (which he won, by the way), and to the point that he's influenced not only his peers but both generations before and after him, including some of the best artists currently out and some of the best artists of the past (anybody who can influence Paul McCartney and is called a genius by David Bowie deserves at least SOME respect, in my humble opinion), then nothing I can tell you will change your mind.
Also don't rely on ad hominems because:
      a) they never work
      b) they make it clear you have no actual substance to your argument
And don't make assumptions about what knowledge other people have because assumptions are rarely correct, and certainly wasn't in this case. I'm a musician.

How about appreciating when he does a video on something that hasn't been done to death (like his Dead Kenedys video) instead of requesting that he does a video on your favorite band where he reiterates things everyone already knows.

Oliver Knox Genesis is one I haven't seen done to death. I was thinking more along the lines of Pink Floyd, Rush, Steely Dan, Yes and even King Crimson and Toto to a certain extent. If you're willing to include videos analyzing Phil Collins then i have seen a couple. I didnt mean this comment as a personal insult to anyone's interests. I just think that ive seen more than a lifetime's worth of Prog analysis videos at this point. It's gotten to the point that Im starting to see videos that analyze punk and no wave as a reaction to the excesses of Prog music as old hat. I'm not saying that Prog analysis isn't interesting or valid, just that personally I think it's more interesting for him to venture into artists and genres that are a little less well tread.

    • @oliverknox3288

Ned Gold That's understandable. But to say that those bands are "overrated" would be, in my opinion, ridiculous. They all have their place in music history as some of the most influential, complex bands of all time. I do enjoy that Polyphonic delves into completely different genres though. And for the record, the only Phil Collins album I'd accept is A Trick of the Tail😂

Also, Around the sword is a halo/crown which could represent that the closer he gets to being a God/King the closer he is to death and his own downfall. Amazing imagery in that video!!

You forgot the meaning of his line
"As I look down at my Diamond encrusted piece"
Diamond = Dia Mon or walking through the underworld or something in that nature
    Piece =Peace
Hence before he said that he said
"With these responsibilities that they entrust in me"
It's the way he said Diamond that's significant
Also his play on the words so exciting at the end
As the words are playing after he says "I got the power to make your life so exciting" it's fading into suicide suicide suicide

Kanye west and kid cudi , the Lennon McCartney of our generation. Btw, I’m a big rock/metal fan but I just know how to appreciate greatness when I hear it. Kanye was right, hip hop is the new rock.

I love this channel and the work you’re doing. I’m gonna politely disagree with you on the winged woman being a phoenix. She’s a seraphim, as evidenced by her having four wings. Seraphim were supposed to be the highest order of angels that sang praise to god. I think her being a seraphim fits in more with the overall image than a phoenix does.

Her wings appear when the dagger appears above his head. I thought of it as her protecting him.

Interesting thing: When he raps ‘I got the power to make your life so exciting’ and he loops the line ‘so exciting’ over and over, it sounds like he’s saying ‘Suicide, suicide, suicide’ which then leads to the outro ‘this’ll be a beautiful death, jumping out the window’.
I always wondered if that was intentional
