I was shocked when I recognized you guys in the video! Of course you'd be involved in something with more positive vibes for a reality show. Always wonderful to spot you in the wild, especially when working on cool projects. :D
I’ll volunteer this tidbit: Mike & Jerry wanted to play themselves as “the evil judges on a reality show” and be mean and uncaring *as a goof* on regular reality shows. They couldn’t do it. These were real people and Mike & Jerry felt awful hurting them. Jumping in the car with Alex in the first episode was wholly unplanned and it’s when we realized what show we actually needed to make, versus the show PA had originally envisioned.
@@kcthedreamerr Mike from PA had mused on Twitter about making “America’s Next Top Webcomic Artist” and I said I’d love to produce it. Months later Robert Khoo (then CEO of PA) reached out and we made it happen. Everything was co-developed with PA (esp. Mike, Jerry, Robert, Josh) and us at LRR (esp. myself, Kathleen, and James). It just sounded like an awesome idea that I believed we could make excellent.

This video is so good. I almost cried when she started talking about how well some of the artists are doing. I’ll be watching Strip Search and hope it gets a season two.
As a webcomic artist and someone who is active in the webcomic community, I have had the pleasure of meeting many other fellow webcomic creators. Let me just say that webcomic artists are some of the most creative and genuine people I have ever come across, and to hear how they acted on this show with each other with wanting to keep long-lasting, personal friendships on a reality TV show didn't surprise me. The contestants seem really sweet, and I would have loved to work with some of them. Hope they are doing well :)

we watched this reality show in college (for fun) and I remember being so emotional at the contestants, and rooted for all of them all the way. It's awesome that so many of them are still creating art today.

Ahh I'm so happy someone's putting a spotlight on this web show! I LOVED watching it week by week when it came out a decade ago, and loved how 'real' it was. Around the same time, there was a Bravo TV show about fine art that was utterly unhinged called Work of Art (hosted and produced by Sarah Jessica Parker?). The whole this is on youtube somewhere and it's worth a watch solely because of how strange and polarizing it was. Contestants were not restrained by medium so the judges had to compare performance art vs sculpture vs illustration vs painting side by side each week, and some of the choices were just wild.
I watched Strip Search while I was attending art school, and it was such a fun time. I was very much in a "grind" mentality, and it kept me going on those late nights. Thank you for the trip down memory lane and the update on the artists, it's just as inspiring to hear it all again!
Heading you talk about what you liked about this show definitely made me think you need to watch more British TV, like the Great British Sewing Bee and The Great Pottery Throwdown! They’re the sewing and pottery equivalents of the Great British Bake Off, respectively, and everyone is really wholesome, friendly, and amazingly creative (it also hurt my heart to see you use the US version of Love Island lol)
Strip Search reminds me a lot of the show Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. When I watched that show, it was one of the few times I genuinely felt the inspiration to make as much art as I could. The show had a similar concept behind it and also had a higher budget than Strip Search. Worth a watch if you can find the episodes. I'm pretty sure you can find some of them on RUclips somewhere.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! This video was so inspring (i'm in some college art student burnout right now) I'm going to binge strip search immediately Thank you sm Lavendertowne! I hope you had a fun time making this video, I had a fun time watching it!
i loved this format from you!! i appreciate that my curiosity about the aftermath for the contestants was somewhat satisfied ;)) i'm looking forward to seeing you explore different styles of content
6 SECONDS AGO🫣 the video hasn’t started yet but i know it’s gonna be great !! i’ve been watching your videos since i started taking art seriously and you’ve inspired me so much😭🫶🏾
I really enjoyed this video! Thanks for making it. I'm not exactly sure why I like it, but after thinking a bit, it feels like it's that you're in the industry and making meta-content about the industry, or put a different way, a video about a series about people entering the industry from someone in it.
Lavender this was such a treat to see!! I love learning about niche little passion projects and such so definitely up my ally and you have the perfect voice for this sort of commentary style video ( a given). If you want to do more content like this maybe you can talk about some niche webcomics or comics that you are passionate about!
I was obsessed with this one art reality show that was specifically based on body painting (skin wars) artists, making me have an interest in that medium :3
Thank you for telling about this series! It's not only interesting and feels way more enjoyable compared to other drama driven live shows (props to you for summarizing it and also talking about the future of all the contestants), but I was so happy and surprised to know about the beginnings of artists of Weedonwantcha (read that comic when I was in high school and I loved it) and Slay The Princess, which is easily my most beloved visual novel video games ever. The video format was superb!! ❤
I loved Strip Search and enjoyed the recap because it's been a while. The "where are they now" segment was great too. Wonderful vid thanks for making it!
Lavendertowne, ive been a fan of yours for so long and this video was absolutely phenomenal! The research and effort you put into this video is applaudable, and its especially nice in this video because we can feel the passion and genuine love you have for this show! please do make more videos like this in the future, especially when its nice to see you support an indie project like this. i tried to listen to this video while drawing, but i could not take my eyes off of your vid, this was genuinely really great and im in love with you branching out to more content ideas!
This was a really fun video! Thank you for sharing something you love, and for being so thorough! The webcomics scene has gone through some strange phases and that show reflects an era around my first look into the medium. It's nostalgic and encouraging, and I'll be watching sometime.
This was such a cool show when it came out, I was a regular in the discussions boards at the time so we had weekly recaps of the show and several people in the art forum that we knew were participants.
I absolutely love the concept behind this show and I'd honestly go feral for a second season...or to be on a second season. It's really refreshing to see a reality show without the obnoxious artificial drama and conflict. the only show I know where the contestants have a rapport with each other and the judges like this is Great British Bakeoff
I love this. I'm looking forward to these type of content. I like listening to people talk about something they are passionate in and sharing it to the world.
This was a very interesting departure from your normal videos. Super enjoyable to watch you talk about something that was both unique and made you happy
Haley this was really cool! I'd never heard of Strip Search but I'll definitely give it a watch. It's refreshing to see a reality show that actually focuses on, you know, reality

I'm pretty sure you can find some of them on RUclips somewhere.
she did SLAY THE PRINCESS??? bless that women that's incredible
I think it was nice that they showed the contests were bounding and being wholesome 😊
Because geez there's to much drama and negative on TV like not everything has to have screaming 😒
Love this format!
Also new idea: draw characters along with a facet of their personality, like their inner child, or their ID, ego and superego etc...
LRR guys talked a fair bit about it in episode 6 of their 20th anniversary podcast series (The Production House || 20th Anniversary LRRcast Ep)
As you said, i can't get over how bad of an idea a name like "strip search" is, and the logo is NOT helping 😭😭
BABES WAKE UP LAV JUST POSTED AND IM NOT LATE FOR ONCE ✨✨✨💀🐀💚✨
this is so inspiring!!!! thank you for sharing about this haley!! more videos like this would be cool
I would so love to see more of these video essay type deep dives. It just suits your channel really well, idk
Ty and Monica also did a side strip on Penny Arcade called The Trenches for a few years.
Thank you so much for this overview! I loved this show so much, so it was great to look back at it.
This video was great! I had no idea this show existed.
The way you talked about the contestants made me very emotional.
Thank you so much. :)
I watched this show when it came out and I love the PA guys!
This was a really fun video! Thank you for sharing something you love, and for being so thorough! The webcomics scene has gone through some strange phases and that show reflects an era around my first look into the medium. It's nostalgic and encouraging, and I'll be watching sometime.
ABBY MADE SLAY THE PRINCESS?! I LOVE THAT GAME OMG 😱
This was such a cool show when it came out, I was a regular in the discussions boards at the time so we had weekly recaps of the show and several people in the art forum that we knew were participants.
Thank you so much for this recommendation. I'll watch it and be obsessed with it!
Oh wow! I AM OBSESSED with this video! I sooo look forward to seeing more like this in the future (if you so wish!) great job as always
Oh my god the way I gasped when Slay the Princess popped up under Abby!! I love that game and the art so much!!
Still sad that the website for Camp Weedonwantcha went down. My all time favorite webcomic.
Haley this was really cool! I'd never heard of Strip Search but I'll definitely give it a watch. It's refreshing to see a reality show that actually focuses on, you know, reality
