    I carried a Python for 15 years until we switched to 9 mm. A lot of us kept carrying them until we were told to carry a Beretta or we wouldn't have a job. this was in about 1993, when the Beretta 92 was becoming the "in" gun. Nothing wrong with a 92, and we all got used ot them, until they pulled another switcheroo to a Smith 40 cal M&P just before I retired in 2005. They sold the Pythons to any deputy with 10 years of more of service for (get ready for the tears) $200. We were buying a new house, and I needed every dime for the down payment, so I had to pass. One of those today would buy a pretty decent used RV trailer. Rats!

      Ouch!!!!! in the late 90's I was in the market for my first revolver and I saw a used Python for about $1,100 and a SW 686 for around $700. I went the cheap route and bought the SW and saved the $400. I recently sold my SW for around $600 and that Python is probably a $3,000 gun today. Sucks.

    Probably the one gun that I wish was still made is the Ruger .44 Magnum carbine (Deerslayer). It was basically a slightly scaled-up 10/22, chambered in 44 Magnum.

    • @Predalien195
      @Predalien195 6 лет назад +4

      +wicken Hale If I recall correctly Ruger did revive it briefly, but it didnt sell well. And with good reason... it was targeted mostly at hunters, and frankly it offered nothing over the standard and cheaper lever action rifles out there. There was talk that if their M77 in .357 had done well they were going to do that with .44 Magnum, but much like why the Deerslayer didnt do well, the M77 suffered the same problem. It WAS more accurate than some lever actions out there, but not enough to matter when hunting within the effective ranges of the caliber.

    • @pg396
      @pg396 6 лет назад +8

      Bill Ruger wouldn’t make more than a 4 Rd Magazine during the 1970’s when we owned a Ranch. Would have been a terrific Farmhouse Gun if it had a Ten Round Magazine. Maybe same reason the Mini 14 can’t be loaded with a Factory 10 Rd Magazine with the Bolt Closed? Fear of Anti Gun People.

    • @theaveragewoodsman6002
      @theaveragewoodsman6002 6 лет назад +7

      Christopher well, my dad had one of the 44 Magnum carbine when I was a kid and that thing was not only fun to shoot, but it was one hell of a little hog gun. He used it for many years hog hunting along with his 44 Magnum Super Blackhawk. Also, I'm going to have to disagree with you, as it offered quite a bit over a standard lever action, being a semi-automatic. Follow-up shots were quite a bit faster if I remember correctly.
      Clearly the 77/357 must have sold pretty well, because they make a 77/44 that seems to be pretty popular also.

    • @Predalien195
      @Predalien195 6 лет назад +4

      +wicken Hale Faster follow ups yes, but in hunting... how many follow ups do you need to be honest? And in self defense, while it's useful, the distances you'd likely be using a .44 Magnum carbine at, the lever action could still provide an adequately fast shot. Plus there's the versatility of using .44 Special in a lever action.
      I have shot the Ruger .44 carbines like that before and they are good guns. I'm not saying they arent, I just personally never saw them bringing more to the table over a cheaper and more available lever action at the time. I only regret not getting the Ruger because their current price, but I dont regret it ultimately for the initial reason I chose not to go with one.
      And the M77/357 has been discontinued, the .44 Magnum still seems to be in production however. Although the idea of a bolt action in a caliber like that to me just doesnt make much sense, but Ruger has always been a bit of an odd company at times. I have no doubt they have quality and are good guns, it's a shame companies like Marlin and such have fallen off under Freedom Group's leadership.

    • @theaveragewoodsman6002
      @theaveragewoodsman6002 6 лет назад +4

      Christopher rapid follow-up shots can be very important when doing a spot and stalk style hog hunt, as you're generally hunting in thick brush. I actually really like lever actions in general, especially ones chambered in Magnum pistol calibers. I actually use an 1892 in 44 Magnum with a 2-7x32 Burris scope setup scout style for hog hunting.
      I have to agree that I'm not exactly sold on the bolt action pistol caliber carbine concept, but they're super popular. I've met a couple people that have them and they swear that it's the bee's knees when it comes to deer hunting in the south.

    Why doesn't Century Arms look into building an American version of the PSL or the Dragunov? The build their own AK and they are getting better at it. If the demand for a PSL is really there they would be foolish not to build them.

    • @cleo3678
      @cleo3678 6 лет назад +1

      AndreMT2720 The only issue is that even though Century’s AK copies are functional (although not nearly as durable) they aren’t true AK’s and that steers many away. They would likely do the same to the SVD or PSL.

    Actually, the Polish Beryl (Archer) is still in produce. U can easily buy one in Poland for about 1100 USD. Really high quality 5.56 like AK gun. My own holds 1,5 MOA, what is good I suppose.

    • @marcinnazwisko5289
      @marcinnazwisko5289 6 лет назад +2

      If you wish to have a (sport) gun in Poland several conditions must be fulfil.
      (1) You must be a member of a shooting society
      (2) You must pass an exam which check if one can safety shoot and maintain a sport gun
      (3) You must pass psychological and psychiatrist examination
      (4) Police must check if you are not a criminalist or do not take drugs or too much alcohol
      If all 4 above conditions are OK you get a permission to have a sport gun. Usually the permission allows to buy several guns (usually 5 to 7). The term “sport gun” have broad meaning and cover almost all guns which are not fully automatic. That means you can buy almost any semi-automatic pistol, rifle, carbine including semi-automatic AR or AK, like seim-automatic Beryl.

      Marcin Nazwisko i agree and i would add that it all takes a few months and about a months salary to get a permit. You can buy any non fully auto gun up to 12mm caliber. I initially was allowed 5 guns, than after 1 year applied to have 11, police agreed to 8

    • @michals5873

    I have a 6" early Python. It is indeed extremely well finished. It is an old design on the lockwork and actually not that complex.. with the new computer machining I think they could make another one that would take very little hand finishing. some of the smoothness is from the way the action works. The real problem would be the hours and hours of hand polishing on the actual exterior of the gun before blue/nickle.. I own a lot of revolvers and yeah.. you guys are right.. once you shoot a Python you get it.

    There are many firearms of the past that we could agree are greatly missed. But if I were to pick out one it would be the Remington Nylon 66. My father, brother and I would go shooting at least a couple of times a month in the 1960s. Back then even a new Nylon 66 wouldn't set you back much more than a family meal costs today. And used ones? I remember looking at them stuffed in a drum with all sorts of .22s. $15 used! And no NICS check either. The Nylon 66 was a surprising good shooter, light, accurate and with 14 rounds that was plenty of ammo to walk tin cans.

    Frankly, the Colt Python is such a fanboy, mall ninja choice. The registered magnums and early P and R revolvers from Smith and Wesson are the match of any Colt in fit and finish and action, and also prettier and more durable. The Dan Wesson revolvers are excellent quality, not as finely made as a Colt or Smith but much more durable and accurate. Both would be much better educated choices than the outrageously overpriced, weirdly delicate Colt.

  • @smithwesson7765
    @smithwesson7765 5 лет назад +3

    The Python was an elegant and lovely revolver for sure. It was killed off by the S&W 586/686 which were more reasonably priced and more durable. However, if Colt did resurrect the Python I might just open my wallet.

    I've shot the Python. It's mostly hype. They stopped making them for a reason. Nice looking gun, but it's not magic. The Smith 686 is just as good (and still made). Colt will make them again. They will be modernized and made with machines with MIM parts.

    • @4DavidJohn
      @4DavidJohn 5 лет назад

      I've spoken to Colt and the reason they say is they don't have the gunsmiths who could do the fine tuning and assembly for the Python action. As far as MIM parts are concerned hopefully they don't... MIM equipment is very costly and may not be as strong as forged or machined parts...

      I don't think the Gunsmithing is really true. I know there's gunsmiths around where I live which Inn in Fort Worth Texas that can work on pythons cuz I've had it done. And they definitely are not specialist for only Colt Pythons I got a pretty beat up one at a gun show a while back and they reboot it for me took it completely apart and cleaned it and said that the metal inside was so worn that the hardened outer layer the steel was one true and that they can replace the parts for me I just haven't done that yet

      PLEASE NOTE: Colt cannot service legacy models older than 10 years, with the exception of most 1911 models and third generation Single Action Army (and New Frontier) models. I got this from Colts FAQ page i should have clarified the factory does not work on them.

      What Ken said is basically true. I don’t know about soft metal, but I know that shooting a Python a lot is more likely to come in for service.
      That was known back in the 1980’s even. That smooth trigger is a trade-off it seems.

    Beryl is now produced for Polish paramilitary called Obrona Terytorialna. Gun Industry isn't very huge in Poland, so you have to wait.
    P. S. Where did you buy that Beryl?

    • @maciejkaim
      @maciejkaim 6 лет назад +4

      Beryl is still a standard issue weapon of Polish Land Forces. Civilian version is the same rifle except semi-auto only mode. The thing is that the manufacturer (Fabryka Broni - FB in short) produces weapons mostly for an army and it's not really interested in civilian market, abroad especially. About 3 years ago they opened FB Radom USA LLC in Texas, but they couldn't pass the ATF regulations and almost all their products were rejected. The FB Radom USA LLC is no longer in operation. So, Beryl is still in produce (I have one :P) but not really available abroad and it costs 1230 USD here in Poland.

I could care less if it's made by the actual company or not, my concern is functionality & dependability. ...And yes, I know I'll have my work cut out for me and for some it won't be feasible to reproduce it to OEM specs but it will be fun to reproduce some of these.

    Never been a smoother handgun made than the Python. I've owned Diamondbacks, Custom 29's, and purty much everything in between and "off the shelf" the Python is the benchmark by which all others are judged, IMHO. Thanks for another great vid.

    Aren't colt pythons only special because they're not made anymore? S&W makes hand-fit revolvers, as does many other manufacturers and they're all really good guns.

    • @dbelex

      Sizukun1 Smith does not make hand fit revolvers, their performance center shit needs a lot of with to equal the action of a Colt Python.

      @wedge259 6 лет назад +7

      My father owns probably 30 Smith and Wesson revolvers from all eras. Without question his old model 10 (can't remember suffix) with pinned barrel has a better action than his new 586 performance center. The model 10 has not been shot much at all. This just don't make them like they used to. Its sad to me that a production gun from 50-60 years ago has better fit, finish, and mechanical smoothness than new performance center stuff. I love Smith and Wesson revolvers. They hold a special place in my heart but what they put out today is not worth the prices they charge. OK rant over.

    Definitely agree with the Python! One of the most beautiful revolvers ever produced, I'd say. I have it's predecessor, the Trooper Mk III. Not a Python, tho. As this video is a couple years old now, it appears Coonan is down for production for some reason. They make the 1911 style pistols in .357 Magnum. Looking like the Coonan now could be one of the top 1's in your top 5 "wish they were still made"! I'm glad I have mine now, but if they don't get back up and running, who knows?

      I heard Remington shut down the Handi rifles because they weren't making ENOUGH money on them. They planned on making a replacement that would have interchangeable barrels (the barrels must be hand fitted on the Handi rifles). Instead of waiting for the replacement to be ready, however, they shit down production before even beginning the replacement. Rossi and Henry filled the gap and now there is no market.
