Just had this happen to my car for the first time this morning, and the only results showing up at first were from some dude who talked for ages and literally never got around to solving the problem. Thank you so much for this very concise video!
thank u for a very quick video. almost 2 hours from home at a beach and my moms car wouldnt start. she pulls out the manual, I go on RUclips 😂 problem was immediately fixed. God bless u. thank u. we would have been screwed
Thank you for this. Just had it happen and fiddling with the gear selector worked. One thing I've noticed is that several times, including this time, the gear indicator -- D, R, etc. -- will be nulled out the next time I start the vehicle. I HOPE that's not a transmission issue? Or a sign of one.
+Deirien Howard I know, it’s so weird Deirien. When I first started having the problem about a year ago, I was trying all kinds of random things I had read on the internet. This method is the one that has consistently worked for me.
I no longer own that vehicle. At the time I made that video, there was about 120k miles. I was lucky with that car, we didn’t have to do any major repairs.
The leather boot at the selector is a little too tight. Near the D sign, I just pulled a little on the leather at that place to give a little more slack. I also have a non start situation because the brake pedal is hard to depress and I don't press hard enough on it while pushing the start button.
I was hoping you could remove the cover and there was a twist key behind it but I guess not haha. There is also a hole in the center console for the key fob if the key fob ever dies you push it in and itll allow your car to start
I have a 2019 Hyundai Sonata it just barley 6 months the push button won't start. It's under warranty and the dealership keeps saying they can't find anything wrong. Ugh
I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata and it says " Put in Park " after I put it in park. Also, the car symble comes on with a key on it. The car will start but the alarm will go off like when you have it running and take the fob outside the car and it stays in austerely and in time if its not driven it will drain the battery.Anyone have a fix?
What happens is that the transmission needs to be in Park in order for the car to start. This is on all cars with automatic transmission as a safety measure due to neutral safety switch which tells the computer if the car is in Park.. Imagine the car starts while in "D" gear then the car will be smashing against something or hurting someone as you will lose control of the vehicle..
totaly agree Carlo. But what is happening here with these Sonatas is the gear selector *IS* in PARK. And, the car will not start. In this video I am advising people to try wiggling the gear selector handle to make better contact with the sensor.
I just got back from Hyundai I was having the problem, then today it would not start at all, had it towed to Hyundai, turns out it was a bad starter, cost a fortune , but had no choice, if I had known it was the starter I would have done it myself, also check your key fob battery first

Ikr? Drives me crazy. It's like "look. I am here watching this video to solve a problem. Get to the point already!!"
Glad it helped😄
Omg you just got me home!! Did exactly what you said and it started!!!! Thank you
that’s awesome news. glad I could help. :-)

So glad! 😄
Thank you so much for posting this video!!! You just fixed my mother in laws car!!!
Same thing happened to me in my 14 Sonata, quick Google found this video and I was good to go
Thank you this ish actually worked. GOT TO WORK ON TIME
I just did this in my 2015 Azera limited and it worked thanks you now it's time to trade it in 😂
Oh no! Good luck then. 😄
THIS JUST SAVED ME TIME THANK YOU GOD BLESS

Ivan. I am not a Hyundai mechanic but my gut feeling is this push button issue is not indicative of an imminent transmission problem. 😊
@@DriveTimeDIY I'm betting it's a sensor issue or something like that, because the car drives and shifts perfectly.
Same issue just found with my 2014 Hyundai Sonata. I’m taking it to the dealer after work tomorrow.
Yo where they able to tell u wat was the problem cuz I’m having a similar issue with my 12 azera
Xxmontell 588 My problem ended up being a bad starter.
Thank you! It worked for my 2015 Sonata.
I'll try that next time. Usually I just get back out the car, lock it and unlock it, push the button and it works

DriveTime Getting out and getting back in seems to work for me. Not sure why Hyundai haven't recalled this yet.
@@deirienhoward4613 LOL. Same. Thought it was random -- the car didn't like how I got in it -- but I guess not.
How many mileage now on the Odometer of your Sonata ? What are the parts replaced ?

@@DriveTimeDIY how many years before you had issues with the push button start ? I'm thinking of buying my wife a Hyundai Kona with push button start.
I had no light i jaut wiggled it and it worked thank you
Life saver!!!! Thank you so much! Worked like a charm.
Glad to hear it! 😁
I have a 2015 Sonata but when I push to start it sometimes struggle to turn on? Do you know why that might be?
Did you ever fix the problem? Or just keep wiggling the shifter. I am in the same boat but want to fix it.
Just did that and it Worked
Excellent! 👍
Your are a genious sir, I've been having the same problem

thank you for chiming-in. every little clue helps us all out!
Hello my friend do you know why some times my car do this and I wait for couple minutes and starter again??
Hi Omar. I do not know. That’s why O made this video. Because so many others have this problem.
I have a 2011 Where it didn't work. The dealer told me to replace the push button. Not sure how to get it out.
my Sonata no blue light on now, it's not *starting* thanks
I have a 2019 Hyundai Sonata the start button car dead. I've had car for 6 months. The dealership says nothing is wrong it's under warranty.
@@Stacey505
mine it says *no key detected* I guess its starter computer or something
I was hoping you could remove the cover and there was a twist key behind it but I guess not haha. There is also a hole in the center console for the key fob if the key fob ever dies you push it in and itll allow your car to start
Rose, you must have a newer model. Thanks for mentioning that. You never know who you're helping with just a simple comment like that. :-)
There was a recall repair for the shifter switch, I had the issue, took it in for the recall all fixed!
That's a common issue with late model sonatas in general
Thanks!
So... I was having the same problem in my 2017 Tuscon, it was a ground wire that was disconnected in the floor.
oh wow! I will have to keep that in mind. We traded that Sonata in about 6 months ago for a Tucson. thanks for the comment. 😊
is this a hybrid?
Thanks bro 💯💯💯🙏🏻🙏🏻
Glad to help! 😁

*barely, but shift it into neutral THEN start it again. That's what we did (2012 Sonata Turbo)

I work at Hyundai they are having problems with the YF model cars with that issue! They have a lot of issues with those Sonatas
In this video, the Sonata is a 2011. Does this issue still happen in newer models?
@@DriveTimeDIY I have a 2013, same issue. I heard from another RUclips post that it occurs between 2011-2013 models
what if the light want turn blue after you wiggle it
The push to start and when I insert the key won't start the car the park is blue.

Wow George. Bummer about the starter replacement. 😐
Thanks for sharing your experience so we can all benefit though.
But what if you have it in gear and start driving and the D disappears and turns white
hadn't seen that scenario. I'm hoping the car doesn't shut off! :-o
Wow
Ope I have 2011
That's what year this was too (or maybe I mentioned that in the video - sorry it's been a while) 😁
Problem solved guys
