600+ HP HEMI JEEP - Fuel Economy & Dyno Tune!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
- We swapped out the 392 Hemi for a 426 Hemi into our Jeep Wrangler JLU Rubicon! Making over 600 horsepower at the engine, a lot of viewers were wondering about not only the power it made at the wheel but also the fuel economy.
You would THINK that our miles per gallon would be terrible...right?!
Hope you all enjoy the video!

Great series idea. Dyno testing the difference in power plants would be cool.
The only way to do MPG is take the miles and divide the gallons after fill up.
Exactly, but that's all assuming the speedo is accurate as well. I never trust the vehicle's mileage display, especially on a tuned vehicle.
If you have put bigger tires and whells on the Jeep without reprogramming the computer the speedo and OD will be off.
Yeap, the old fashioned by hand method is the best. Those mileage computers/indicators can be off.
@@84yoda4x4 yep, mine was off by 12mph until i got a calibrator, now it's only off by 4mph according to the gps lol
This knowledge is very helpful. I lifted my old Jeep TJ and could have really used this knowledge to get the most out of it. My speedometer and shifting was way off. still loved the heck out of it
Tuning is really interesting stuff. MPG is great to know just so you know what your possable range is. If you're overlanding or driving cross country then being able to go the extra miles without having to fill up is really nice. For comparison you're getting better MPG then my 2.5L with 3x the power and at higher speeds. So jealous. 😅
I would have thought that AMW would have done all this at their shop already! Happy Trails to all of you!
Amw didn't build this jeep.
@@timhurst1813 AMW most definitely built the 426 stroker that currently sits in the Step Child.
"AMW might use this tune once we are done since we are the first with it".
@@abnpthfdr2934 my bad. I thought that rich might have confused it with the current one that AMW is building. I didnt realize that AMW had put the motor in the stepchild
AMW didn’t have time to have a tune completed since we were there and the first 426 motor showed up and we begged them to swap the 426 for the 392 knowing the tune would have to be sorted out. This was our choice and it’s why it wasn’t for sale to anyone else yet.
The Chris custom exhaust sounds great. I know how hard that is, snaking in , up and around all the modifications on the Stepchild.
I love all the dyno knowledge and you should’ve done that along time ago!
That's better mileage than my tricked out PowerWagon on 37's. Nice. I ordered a helephant motor for it can't wait.
I’m not shocked by the mileage. I can’t wait to see the Demon fully tuned.
Kevin! Congrats on being the sole voice for Lite Brite in this video!!! Assuming that was Brittany's hands holding Jelly, it's quite a milestone. Of course, if that's yer Mistress, no wonder she's quiet! Lol😆
LOL, sole voice. Some of us watch these videos for Brit's starry eyes, high cheek bones and especially when Kevin tosses out a compliment only to be called a "Suck Up". She balances Kevin's narcissism/egomania.
That's the first Dyno ive ever seen like that. I like it. Seems like it would be easy to make it portable, and work on it. That jeep is going to be a blast. All the work put in to it was vary enjoyable to watch. Have fun and play safe.
Hi. I bumped into you in Ouray Yesterday! You were so good to let me get a pic with you two! You inspired me to do black bear pass. Came from phoenix! Keep up the inspiring videos! Just ordered your lite brute sticker for my jeep jk!!
Hope you enjoyed the trails! 😊🤙
I've climbed the Baker grade so many times. Used to run flatbed between SL and LA. Sometimes would slow to 35 when it was 120 outside. When I hauled mobile homes out of Paris CA to SL I would get on the CB and announce "tiny little truck coming through. Little truck coming through" to piss off the "big trucks" when I would pass them on the Baker grade.
Great video guys! We is us, which means our team! Don’t be so bashful about using the word we!
Try the Evans wartless coolant. Its 300 degree+ boiling point will keep your coolant in full contact with internal engine surfaces with zero bubbles. Great MPG results with your build IMO
Sorry for my ignorance, would that work with stock engine on a gladiator? Where can i check it out
@@lemn1201 The Evans Waterless coolant can be used in any car or vehicle.
As long as it’s water cooled of course
Great video! Was awesome getting to meet you guys last night!
Amazing what someone that understands Chryslers tuning and the Neural network can do! 426 sounds awesome and very amazed at the fuel economy. Would love to have him do my 5.7 Hemi Gladiator.
You could hear the difference from the first pull to the second pull. Great work done to give tough some nice wheeling ability with the fuel economy of a 6.
Thanks for the info, I never thought about getting it retuned after a gear swap, one day I’ll do a hemi swap though.
Thank you Sir! This interested me from start to finish!!!
Awesome video! I know it was way more in depth than normal, but those of us mechanics/tuners eat it up! Thanks for sharing, and we are also eager to see how the Demon Child does as well.
This video is awesome! I’ve got a stock 3.6 gladiator and live just down the hill in corona. I’d be happy to come up and have him tune my jeep. He can grab the tunes off the offroad plus button at the same time.
Fascinating, though I don't follow it all! (Computers and I don't always get along...). Good to see you're putting all that gasoline to good use. Cars and vehicles are going to need more IT techs rather than mechanics if we're not careful! StepChild is Still Amazing! Great mileage considering the weight and 40" tires! LIteBriteNationComputesTheHorses!
Some people worry about fuel mileage so much that they'll always go for the smaller engine option thinking they're for sure going to get much better fuel mileage. lol. I remember back in 1998 I was passing the Dodge dealer and saw a brand new electric blue 98 Dodge Sport 4x4 sitting out front and I did a u-turn because I just had to have it. It came with the 5.2lt 318. So I bought it and my buddy really liked it, so about two weeks later he came by in his new Dodge 1500 but he got one with the 3.9lt V6, he said he got the V6 for better gas mileage. lol. I was like, that V6 in that full-size truck gets the same gas mileage as my V8. lol. He didn't believe me until he owned it for a few weeks and figured out I was right.
A V8 doesn't have to work as hard as a 6-cylinder, so to me, the V8 is always the best option.
Our 6.7 F450 had better numbers than an Ecoboost Escape if we kept it under 70. We did not🤣
@@justinotherig Yeah, it's crazy! My tuned RAM 2600 Cummins 4x4 will get over 25mpg if I keep it under 60mph. But I can't seem to keep my foot out of it so I only get around 15mpg. lol.
From the factory without the tune, it only got around 20mpg under 60mph. So just a tune and a cold air intake made it get much better fuel mileage.
Like the tunes playing in the background at the Dyno place.
The fact that you're getting similar mileage(assuming the 20mpg is accurate) compared to my 2.0 and 8spd is amazing. Dream set up is at minimum 392 swap with dana 60s on my JL but that's for now a dream.
Really nice and smooth ride going in that off road Jeep. Engine setting seem perfect from the sounds of things. A higher water temperature is better for gas mileage so that the only reason they like it set there. Tires are nice and quiet.
Thats pretty good. I get 13MPG in my 96 cherokee with 33s and the factory straight 6. I would take 13mpg and 600+HP anyday.
Know that Baker Grade all too well. Use to drive from LA to Vegas on a regular basis. So many cars pulled to the side. Love watching the dyno tests.
Thank you for the coolant specs. I've noticed my temp gauge going to around 215f. Good to know that's within specs lol
Ha ha poor Kevin doesn’t get a word in edge ways with Brit and now he is making up for it.Love you guys.
Looking forward to to the next tune !!
💯
So what was the final result after min best timing, fueling and cam phasing? Would be good to see the before and after curves!
Kevin forgot to film it! 😅 We’ll try to put her back on the dyno when we go back with the Demon Child & show the final numbers on both Jeeps!
I need to get my Grom out to this guy for a dyno lol. Thank you for your time.
I'm surprized that Brit didn't eq out the Boston, "More than a Feelin'", from the background. While you were explaining the digital cam timing.
Excellent vid, loved it, digging it, more of these!
Does he do diesels? If it makes you feel any better, my Peterbilt gets 6-7mpg running 70mph. 90gal tank cost about $450.00 to fill here in KC, MO.
Thank you for making this video. Jelly hasn't lost her Ms. Puppy figure Kevin 😂❤❤💯🤙
Offroading MPG is a whole different question than for street cars! Espacially when we're talking about the potential of overlanding the vast landscapes of 'Merica. MPG = Distance
Sound totally different.. love to have my 3.6 tuned.. be interesting to see what he could get out of one.. love to have a hemi in mine but not in the budget.,
I didn’t understand a majority of what you guys spoke about lol but it was still an interesting video and I watched every second in hopes I’ll learn too
I said it before, and I’ll say it again. It’s smiles per gallon not miles per gallon, when it comes to owning a Jeep. It’s a Jeep thing. 😎 I see a lot of smiles on Kevin’s face in this video 😁
I have a stock 3.6 JT with tons and 40s. Let's tune it!
Good details guys. Same as the GM E38 ECU stuff. Very cool.
I definitely need a hemi swap. My stockish (I’m running 33” tires) jku 3.8 gets 13mpg. And I can only get 80 mph going down a really big hill. Lol.
Next time you guys are down here tunning the the DemonChild you guys should do a little meet and greet. It would be cool to see it get tuned 🤙
It’s the basics of AI. Think of a Neural Network as a Big table like he said. The software they’ve developed takes a bunch of pulls and basically fills in the blanks where you haven’t provided data. Also, as you provide more samples, the better the fill in data gets.
Great video. Awesome stuff.
I would’ve guessed 450 to the wheels, that seems like an insane amount of loss. I guess everything on the Jeep that’s rotating weighs a ton but still seems low. This might be a dumb question but once you do that America’s most wanted swap I’m assuming the top speed limiter is removed?
The dana 80 axles are a ginormis loss compaired to even the largest dana 60 offerings. And worth every ounce of it.
450 at the wheel is an incredible amount for any car lol. Transmission, axles, gears, hubs, and wheels all are parasites to your engine hp.
factory 392 going through all 4 wheels 395 hp. don't know elevation through
ruclips.net/video/vRO8-tSLBpI/видео.html
@@sfshilo it’s a lot but not for 600hp at the motor. A BMW M3 has 510hp and Dyno’s 450hp
@@mcwendel8066 that's a car built for the track, no where near the losses a truck has
So..., did I miss it? How much did horsepower and torque improve after the tune?
It’ll be alright ! Family man ! I have that too in my Jeep .. maybe 325
The initial 351 HP dyno was surprising to me. I guesed near 500 hp if the crank hp was gonna be well over 600 hp, but booooooy howdy was I way off. Though, did I miss when Kev showed us the HP numbers after the tune? I was waiting for it but I don't remember seeing it or hearing it.
Oh, and I don't know about the rest of the viewers, but I really like the Kev vids. Especially when he gets to nerd-out on esoteric automotive niche tasks, like this neural network tuning thing. I still don't really understand, even though I think I understood all the specific things going on during the convo in the truck. I think I am just too dumb to get it, but I'm glad Kev and Josh get it, cause that is where the tire hits the road, when the tuner and owner understand.
Also, we could hear Brit and occasionally see some of her hair blowing around on the drive back into Utah. Did she just not want to appear on camera so Kev could do his thing? It's rare that we know Brit is in the vehicle, but we don't see her.
Kevin forgot to film the final numbers. Lol So we’ll try to film it when we go back to hook up the Demon Child too! And yeah, I was kind of on a vacation/mental break during this & so opted out of being in this video. 😅😅
Agreed, not every mod you do you are getting better gas mileage. I too think some of the engine tuning stuff is interesting/neat. Considering everything, the fuel mileage isn’t that bad.
A buddies Fiat on Unimog axles with a built 800hp k24 motor, dynoed at around 250hp at the tire on 40s. Pretty crazy what drivetrain weight does.
It’s pretty wild, and surprising for people who aren’t used to seeing the numbers. Especially on big, heavy builds like this.
Getting the same fuel efficiency as my 2017 Ram 3500 diesel! Can't complain about that at all. \m/
I live in AZ at around 2400' elevation, have a bone stock 2013 JKU and drive at the posted speed limit everywhere I go.
Driving like I do with my AC on I average just shy of 20 mpg. I was going to install a small lift and 35"s, then eventually do 4:56 gear sets....but with the cost of gas the way it is...I've considered just going 33"s.
Hey Kevin, check out waterwetter for your cooling system. I have heard that stuff works well
This is the nerdy side of Kevin we rarely get to see. Professor Williams in his lab coat talking science….
I had my engine swapped celica go through similar process when we did 3sgte swap. Actually had to tune my thing down because i was doing burnouts between gear shifts.
I miss that car sooooo
Kevin lives for this type of stuff. It generally doesn’t make it to RUclips cause we’re never sure if viewers will find these conversations as interesting as he does. 😅
“Want to tune a 3.6” I believe is code for “I want to buy a 2door with a 3.6 so we can do another build series!”
That’s totally what I’m hearing here!
Kevin explained the off road plus better than the dealership did. I had to go to the manual.
It shouldn't go into limp mode, it should go into fuel enrichment. Dump more gas in it to cool it off.
Funny you mention about the sound change when you get the tuning right. When I tuned my 502 It took a while to get it right, but there was one change I made where the sound totally changed. People would drive by it and give me a thumbs up because it sounded so good. (this was in my motorhome)
And yes, I enjoy hearing the details about the tuning. It interesting that they are calculating VE rather than just entering numbers in the table directly. Makes me really wonder what could be done with the 3.6 stock engine. I hate the shifting points when I'm towing. Both my Wrangler and my KL are very poorly managed under load, especially towing. The KL is way to aggressive and as a result gets horrible fuel mileage when towing.
Honestly i love the stepchild, but if that’s your daily driver, i sure as heck wouldn’t want to pay your fuel bill each day hahaha
I have an 07 Dodge Power Wagon with a 5.7 Hemi in it then only does 9.4 to 10 Mi a gallon you're doing great
A great advertisement to show how INFLATED the Dodge HP figures are!!!
This is very interesting. It didn't even occur to me that someone might want to do this. Very technical video and I loved it.
People always ask me about my MPG too. And they ask like "you dumbass, you know a Jeep gets low gas mileage?" I always reply that I do not drive a Jeep for gas mileage, I drive it to get over and through stuff and go places your Honda Pilot won't go. 😎
I just moved from Fort Irwin, not far from Hesperia. Wish I knew they were there before I moved. Now my Jeep and I are in Germany. Would have been cool to have him work on my stock 3.6
At 12 or 13 mpg. Your still getting better mpg than my twin turbo porsche, my stage 3 ford 7.3 powerstroke, my shelby gt350R, my 61 Falcon and my 1970 Starcraft Starcruiser.
I really like the OffRoad+ on my Jeep Gladiator. Having the option in 2wd would be awesome!
So basically if driven at the speeds I prefer (63-68) stepchild would be in the 18-24 range? That’s actually pretty phenomenal when you consider the absolute lack of aerodynamics and the capability of that vehicle. My 2000 stock tj does 17 on old gas and 20 on new, so you’re easily beating that with a much more capable ride
My diesel truck has about 1200 torque at the crank, but only 800 at the wheels and 400rwhp, but I'm running 42's at 5k elevation. That's the most power you can run on a 6.7 without getting forged connecting rods and I don't feel like spending another $3k just for those....yet. I get up to 18mpg on the highway at 55mph if it's flat with no wind lol, but i average 13 overall which isn't bad for a truck that weighs just over 10,000 pounds.
Maximum Trans in Hesperia, you were in my city, ahhh man i missed you guys
I got something lesser in depth done with my diesel where we matched tiresize, gearing, transmission handling and torque and power from the engine, drove like a totally different car!
@@MrMrsregor in Germany, if there is some software existing you pay around 1000€ if they need to do everything from scratch you will pay much more if the vehicle is not of interest for them
Impressive amount of information... thnx for sharing.
As an engineer I’m digging this. But 24k views in 15 hours? I’m wondering 💭 if this technical stuff, and Daycare Center builds need to be on a separate channel. 🤔
Nope. Not happening.
We don’t have the bandwidth (or enough content) to successfully run two channels full time.
@Sonnicman, for the amount of money people throw at their Jeeps, you would think this video would have more views.
Some do better than others. Just the way it is
Shauno from 4wd24/7 might he heading over to usa with his dirty30,you and the squad should organise a trip so you can see how a built Aussie rig compares to the Jeeps.
Would be a great collab!
Ok, 214 degrees on my little truck would be death. I am glad to see that your engine is handling it. I can't wait until the 'Demon Child' reveal.
#JellyNation
If I was in Cali I’d come let you tune the 3.6, but I’m in Hawaii. Would really like to see what the numbers would be though.
Just saw you guys at Telluride out side the Brown Dog pizza place.
Looks to me like you could use an insane turbo diesel build. 400bhp -500bhp in a diesel and you would create 3x or 4x the torque of your petrol V8 with way better economy. 👍
I so want this... but I already have a 392. Unless the price is different for an AMW 606 conversion on a JL 392, wouldn't I be better of selling my 392, and. buying a stock v6 Rubicon, then having the AMW 606 conversion done? The other thought I had was if it would be possible to have a stock 392 upgraded to a AMW 505?
Kevin, this was a good video. I am down here in San Diego, and if he wants to do this to a 3.6 on a JK, let me know.
Kevin, I’ll volunteer my 2017 rubicon with a 3.6 for the tuning 😂✌🏻
If you really want to tune and play with a stock 3.6 I think it would be a great time to come out and let you mess around with mine!
We have a stock 3.6L in our JK, and less than a hour from Hesperia
That's why when you go with a bigger engine. You start keeping track of smiles per gallon , instead of mpg.
I rather keep a smaller engine and lighten the vehicle, increases smiles and miles per gallon.
I have a Dakota Customs 392 8 speed kit in my 2008 JK . I also run a 180 degree , it thermostat, it runs 190-203 temp wise. 4:88 gears and 35’s . I wonder what it puts down . I’d love to get it tuned to pull the maximum out of it . Mpg wise I’ve gotten from 11-17 ish depending on how heavy my foot is. Great video
I'm sorry, but you're never gonna convince me that someone with a 600hp hemi or a demon is really concerned about his fuel economy. 😄
Power to weight ratio helps with fuel mileage. Great walk through though.
With a big engine tuned properly and right gearing you are barely pushing the pedal to do 70 mph on the highway. Once you get into the throttle the mileage goes way down. I had a 523 c.i. engine and it was the same.
I’m gonna say with wheels and 40s installed on rolling Dyno, you’ll be making about 335 to the wheels. Before tuning.
Maybe I should sit in the middle of the desert with Bible's and about 100 gal of fuel 😂😂😂
Did you fix the Stepchild after rescuing those people in the Desert!
Yes, we found out later that same day after getting to our destination that it was just a cut wire. Luckily an easy fix! 😁🤙
Kevin, with all the cross country driving you guys do have you given any thought about swapping out the OEM fuel tank for a larger extended range fuel tank? I think it would give you a little more piece of mind knowing you had an extra couple gallons in the tank over the OEM.
This is a awesome share! I was wondering about fuel efficiency? You are getting better mileage than a 1999 Durango witch is about 14-15 MPG and not even on 40’s. I’m kind of curious to know if you could smog that rig in CA? I’m assuming you have a newer motor than what the year of the vehicle? Interesting to know that there is a great tuning expert in such a restrictive state? I keep dreaming of building a awesome fun car but I think it would be best if the vehicle is older than 1975?
Living your best lives!
Doggies love to say "I love you"...🙂
Hmmmm I wonder if Josh could tune my amc 304 w/FiTech fuel injection.?
So is it Brittany's day off, .......
Random question. Do you guys recommend any Jeep/ Bronco rental companies out there? Currently rocking the minivan life with my two boys but want to vacation out there and see the sites around Vegas, Grand Canyon, Moab and take them out into nature and thought renting a Bronco or Wrangler for the week would allow us to have a great vacation. Thank you for the info.
I'm sorry that guy charged you anything for fuel to get you out of a bind, that just isn't right, especially if he represented himself as a Christian. I remember running out between Vegas and State line about 30 years ago, a guy also charged me about $25-30. for a gallon, that was way back then, I don't know how people that take advantage of others circumstances sleep at night.
We honestly didn’t mind paying for it & we were grateful he stopped to help. We just thought it was ironic that he gave us a prayer book and told us that helping us was his “good deed for the day” before asking for cash. Lol
@@LiteBrite Yeah, that's what bothers me, a "good deed" does not ask for a tip 😆. Anyway as a Christian it bothers me that he did that, if I ever get the chance I'm personally giving back that $40. or buying you guys lunch/dinner. You guys are awesome.
U might have just said,”banana banana banana”. Way over my head;)
