The swasbuckler pirate genre lived and died by Pirates of the Caribbean (or at least the trilogy), but I still hold them close to my heart. As a kid, me and my brother missed out on Indiana Jones, but this filled the gap for me.

Yeah. I say this franchise saved the genre but the truth is, pirate movies were never really big before this. I can't really think of any other good pirate movies outside of this franchise. I'd almost consider Peter Pan a pirate movie. Almost... not quite though. Definitely some tonal similarities between POTCB and Indiana Jones. They both had practically the same trajectory too, both franchises ran into the ground.

“Jack has the intelligence of an average man”, proceeds to explain why Jack does not in fact have the intelligence of the average man.

Jack Sparrow isn't conventionally intelligent. His IQ is probably pretty average. What makes him uniquely intelligent is his emotional intelligence, his ability to accurately predict the actions of others. When it comes to strategy, Jack is in his element. That's what I meant by that. He's no Einstein but he has very unique strengths that allow him to function at a higher level.

@@TableCreed Creating complicated strategies and elaborate escapes on the fly isn’t the mark of average intellect though. Especially when he improvises contingencies immediately if they don’t end up working out.
There’s a gap between average and Einstein level IQs, but Sparrow repeatedly demonstrates he’s certainly above average. One would also need to take into account that education/information wasn’t as easily accessible as it is know.

@@alexman378 I suppose there's some wiggle room between average IQ and Einstein, as long as people don't pin him as an idiot or super-genius, there won't be an argument from me. I didn't take the time period into consideration, so maybe he is well above average. He seems to be on level-footing with people like Will Turner, people who had an education, but he walks circles around people like Gibbs. I would say characters such as Cutler Beckett have a higher IQ, but Jack is just such a good strategist that it allows him to triumph over those kinds of people.

Great editing! But to be fair the title should read “How Johnny Depp Saved The Pirate Genre”.

Thanks for the kind words. I would say though, that while Johnny Depp certainly turned Captain Jack Sparrow into an icon, we have seen how bad the character can be without the team from the original trilogy. I don't know who that was in Dead Men Tell No Tale but it wasn't Jack Sparrow anyway. I have to give Disney credit for greenlighting the project but to me, Pirates of The Caribbean will always be the creation on Gore Verbinski, the director of the original trilogy. He gave it its identity, not Johnny Depp or Disney.

Why do you talk with pauses between every 2/3 words??
Sounds like a shity ai 🤖

Yeah I agree. I think it's only really noticeable once I start talking about On Stranger Tides until the end of the video, but I do hear it myself.
If I knew this video would have done this well, I would have re-recorded the entire thing. I was kind of impatient when it came to the recording process.
Instead of getting a good take, I would just splice different takes together if I preferred the sound of a different one.
I'm being much stricter now. I think my last two videos have been much better narration-wise. I'm using one take for each point or sentence, even if its not perfect.
makes for a better listening experience. I'm honestly not happy with the narration in this video, but that just means there won't be such bad narration again.
I'm working on another long video like this and I really think it sounds good. I'm putting way more effort into the actual recordings now, after this video.
