  • Italy is Heavily Cracking Down on its Tourists, Here's Why | Firstpost America
The global favourite tourist destination of Italy is done with tourists. The country, which has been welcoming tourists for centuries, is now fed up with the number of people that visit the nation every year. While tourism brings money, it is not worth more than a person’s life. Due to so many people in the vicinity, the environment is under extreme pressure. Thus, Italy has been constantly introducing bans on certain activities that tourists can do in the country. There are bans on taking selfies, wearing flip-flops, and even sitting on the iconic steps in Rome. Watch our video to know more.

I am italian, i live in Rome, it is absolutely not true that tourist can't take selfies or wear beach slippers! no one can sit on the stairs of Piazza di Spagna because they are very ancient and are wearing out...tourists are always welcome, hospitality has always been a characteristic of the italian people, and then we are so used to it that Rome would seem empty without you! sorry for my Google translator english

But you must admit that at times there are too many people in one place and that the touristic apartments are generating income for the government more than what the tourists spend some times.
Regulation is the solution to keeping the peace between local people and massive tourism… Venice has stopped cruise ships from stopping and the “tourist tax” is a very good incentive.
We must preserve patrimony for future generations, not only tourists.
I think it is not true what the media say about Selfies.
It is probably to scare the tourists to be more aware of the many people in one place at the same time…
      Long live the eternal city!

I am Italian, and although I do not agree with some government decisions (for example, the entrance fee to Venice), I admit that some measures need to be taken to prevent our millennia-old art cities from becoming amusement parks. Unfortunately, without any regulation, we risk being overwhelmed by tourists. The message is not to deny access or to snub tourism-anyone who has visited this country knows very well that (almost always) tourists are received with happiness and smiles-but the sheer number of people arriving each year is impressive, and this situation needs to be managed. Greetings from Italy.

Naturally, the local people have the right to live without so many tourists and uncivil behaviour.

the flip flops is because of the hiking.... it's not safe! many tourists take some types of excursions lightly. The result is that the authorities increasingly have to provide assistance. In Italy the health and emergency system is free for every person, even for foreigners and tourists. Taking off a helicopter with a rescue team has a cost, this cost is paid by the community. When you tackle a mountain trail, you better be equipped. Otherwise you could get hurt or even die and the Italian authorities pay the economic cost.

People talk about the benefits of tourism, but increasingly, as foreign investors buy up hotels and turn housing into B&Bs, the locals are relegated to waiting tables and cleaning rooms. In exchange, they find themselves priced out of local restaurants and crowded off of local beaches, etc.
International Corporate Tourism doesn't bring the kind of benefits tourism did 30 years ago when local residents owned the businesses making all the money.
If locals aren't profiting from tourism, having drunk rowdy tourists roaming the streets all night loses its appeal.
They're no longer tourists, they're invaders.

I live downtown in a European capital. The whole neighbourhood has turned into airbnb apartments. Local renters are gone, businesses have gone out of business and now there are more tourists at the supermarket queue than locals. Tourists in flip flops or those hideous cork shoes (yeah, I know, they are comfortable but still HIDEOUS) who only shop for grilled cheese. This type of tourism does not support the local economy, only the person renting the airbnb apartment. If I never heard another suitcase roll in front of my building I would be happy. Tourism used to be a luxury. Tickets were expensive, lodging was expensive and I think we should go back to that time.

I just got back last week from a 10-day visit in Italy. It was marvelous. Their railway system is the best. I didn't get the impression that they were tired of tourists. On the contrary, it provides an important livelihood for many of them. They just need to manage the crowds better, especially during the peak seasons. Italians Need the tourists. Especially the South where unemployment is high. Italians from the South, come to find work in western Europe, so the country could still do with income-bringing tourists 😂. I'm in agreement. Just got back from Italy. And the main popular cities and attractions are a SS of tourists (like me) only I'm in and out. I don't loiter. I didn't sit on the Spanish steps (others did... plenty others- no tickets given). Rome was a SS. Forget Naples. Disgusting. Bari? Meh. Amalfi? Waaaay over hyped and insta over saturated photos. 2hrs that's all you'll need. Trust. Stick to small unheard of towns. I did. And it was way better imho. Anyway.. look, Italy is, if I'm being honest, overrated. Big time. After you see one cute small town with narrow alleys you've seen them all. Pizza? Everywhere. Gelato? Ya it was good. Worth the $2000 air fare + $2200 accommodations? I could do without. Look im not saying don't go. Go. But let's stop with the hype. Even the Italians are saying relax and stay away. Which is saying something.

No crowds, no cruise ships, secret is not to visit in peak season, July or August. Weather was perfect in September. Our hotel was atop the Spanish steps. Reason why Spanish steps were so packed with sitters was because of all the guys oogling the Italian hotties navigating the ancient cobbled street dressed to the nines and wearing six inch spiked heels while eating a gelato.

At my age, I am done with tourism. All I want to do these days is as little as possible on a beach and in the shade. I have been there, seen it, and avoided buying any T-shirts, horrendously expensive small glass objects, or contracting any nasty diseases and have no interest in going anywhere where more than just a few people wish to go. I have been living in or near London for 64 years and still to experience much of what London has to offer. I suffered 3 days in Venice 25 years ago. Even then everything was so expensive it turned out to be cheap. We brought nothing but two coffees. I am still trying to recover from the shock. As it was £12 plus tip for two coffees 25 years ago, I don't even wish to imagine what two coffees cost these days.
Come to London if you insist on going somewhere in Europe, Venice is just an enormous scam. We might eventually clean out your wallet but the Venetians will have the shirt off your back, as well, and you will still be hungry.
Italians won't like you especially if you are American and therefore dress with zero style. Especially Venetians will stop before you in the street while you are dressed in your best short pants, long white socks, ridiculous-looking tennis shoes, and sweaty T-shirt. Then look you up and down 3 times, shake a disapproving head in your direction, mutter to themselves "Stupidi Americani," or much worse, and if you are lucky they will only spit at your feet.
Having said that. If you finally tire of being looked at as if you are a badly dressed alien monster, try this in Venice.
Go into a coffee house or restaurant speaking loudly in an American Accent and suddenly all of the waiters and waitresses will be smiling at you. If you are an American this should come naturally.
"Native Italians do smile, after all," you may think to yourself.
These people love how Americans insist on tipping even after being charged $20 for a single coffee. Suffice it to say, if they discover they have somehow allowed a Brit in their lustrous establishment, they may never get served at all. The Venetians have never liked their potential victims to be able to sit down anywhere in Venice other than on a seat outside one of their infamous coffee houses.

We were on a cruise calling at Venice, there was a conflict between Tourism, and the City itself. You looked one way and it said= no more tourists, go home. You looked another and it said = Tourists welcome we need you! I can see both points of view. Restricting the size of ships is a good idea, but Cruise lines are ordering much larger ships. We were on the Cunard Queen Victoria and the Captain announced that as this could be one of the last visits, they were leaving the doors onto the foreword deck unlocked to enable us to take photos. This would happen at about 5am. It is so hard to strike a happy medium. No matter where we went, we would do our own thing, leaving the ship before most people had finished breakfast so places were very quiet but it was easy to see what would be the results if we had all got off at the same time! We were only late back once, by 1hr, but they had to wait as it was a ship organised trip!
