The Best Premed Major (for Medical School)

- I get a lot of questions from students asking me, “what premed major will maximize my chances of getting into medical school?” Here’s my response. First, at most colleges, there is no such thing as a “premed major.” You can technically choose whatever major you like, so long as you complete the medical school prerequisites. The only difference is that some make the process less complicated than others.
If your top priority is getting into medical school, I recommend you pursue a major in biological science - particularly one that is of interest to you.
The requirements for your major will overlap nicely with your medical school prerequisites, minimizing the number of classes you need to take.
That being said, there are students who still would rather pursue something else. If you have a burning interest in political science, for instance, don’t be afraid to follow that passion.
There may be less overlap between medical school prerequisites and your major requirements, but some medical schools might actually prefer your unique background and interests.
Whatever major you choose though, it’s crucial that you take the time to hone your work ethic and study strategies.
Medical school is the toughest, most rigorous schooling in the world - make sure you’re prepared for it.

This gives me a sense of relief! I want to major in linguistics because it's always been interesting to me, but I wasn't sure if I should double major or scrap linguistics to go premed

Yooo I wanna do something linguistics too!
Believe it or not, Philosophy majors are extremely underrated when it comes to Med school applications. Mostly because their ability to think through abstract and complex problems, ethical dilemmas, and future scenarios in a structured and rigorous academic manner on top of their superior communication and critical thinking skills makes them highly adept in medical scenarios and coveted by Med schools.
Yeah but shouldn't you be a major in science (physics, chemistry, biology) to get into med school??
@@minyoongislostsisterandrik2053 You don't have to be. As long as you take the necessary science courses, it doesn't really matter what major you're in. A lot of med schools are starting to place value on more candidates outside of the traditional stem fields because they're so saturated with bio and chem applications. You actually have a leg up on other applicants if you're outside of the traditional bio/chem/physics majors.
@@myjciskate4 ohh thanks for the info mate,have a g'day 😊
Yup. I regret switching from Philosophy to Biology
@@jamesrosewell9081 Are you still in school?
YOU JUST CAME IN CLUTCH
I'm thinking about what to do my bachelor on when I get into college next year
I love chemistry so I was thinking chem but also torn between biology since well biology allegedly would help more for med school
I'm majoring in biomedical sciences, thinking about going physician assistant or some sort of nursing because I don't like school enough to get a doctorate. It's a pretty good major, you take quite a few chem classes like gen chem, organic, and biochem. It is fairly easy to minor in chemistry with this major since it lines up well, if you want to.
Do biochem then
Premed engineers where you at
But why would we need differential equations for medical school?…
In my country India, you get 4 choices to pursue after 10th grade.
1.PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths)
2.PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Bio)
3.Commerce (Business studies)
4.Arts (History, Political science)
In order to get into med school, it's mandatory to take PCB after 10th and after 12th, u have to give a mandatory entrance exam called NEET which will secure u a seat in the government medical colleges if u score high enough.
It's not possible for an Arts or Commerce student to get into med school here.
The same can be said for PCM as aspiring engineers pursue it to crack JEE (another entrance exam for future enginners)
I’m a med student and my undergrad major was applied math. Don’t be afraid to do what you like 👍
