- St. Francis De Sales, often referred to as the "Saint-maker," liked to say, "Be who you are, and be that well." Each of us is called to pursue a life of holiness, a journey that unfolds uniquely for every individual. But comparing ourselves to others and judging ourselves harshly can be tempting.
Fr. Mike Schmitz delves into the harmful effects of comparison and invites us instead to focus on embracing our true identity and "paint our own sunrise."

And it’s not like I want to, I just do it without even realizing sometimes, and it’s so degrading. It causes me to have so much self-hatred. @@kilroy4103 Maybe you should pray and ask God what he would say to you. It’s difficult to answer not knowing you. For me, that one little statement means much. First, each of us needs to come to know God in truth and fullness. I cannot really know who I am apart from first knowing who is my Father God for He created me and created me for a significant purpose as He also created you. Next, is clearing away the noise. The world desires to fill our minds and hearts with lies which cloud and misdirect from the person each of us has been called to be so often each of us lives far less than our God defined purpose. To be who God made me to be well is when my heart, mind, soul and Will is in complete union with God absent contradictions. In this place, all is flowing from God and His Holy Presence through His Perfect Will so that God is Glorified Fully. It can be difficult to find that Perfect Union with God where all is at Peace - this is who God created me to be… I am on a journey to find that place… at times, I believe I know… other times, Im unsure… then as any Loving Father does He speaks gently to my heart and soul in a whisper, “Just Be With Me… Rest in Me… the more you spend time with me, you will Come to Know…” I am attempting to do my best to Rest in God to Hear Him Clearly so that lies can be cleared away, and I can know for certain His voice, His leading, who He has called me to be, and then I Hope with the best of my ability to live that out well. I hope that helps. Life is a Journey, but I trust God will lead each of us as we seek Him…. ❤️🩹🙏❤️

As someone who is 33, single, no kids, and researching other religions, I NEEDED THIS for this time in my life! THANK YOU Father Mike Schmitz! I've been watching you for almost 2 years now and I only get POSITIVE vibes from you! And in the scriptures it says, "Anything GOOD is OF GOD". James 1:17 (maybe not verbatim, but that's the message I got). I get that from you. Hopefully I can emulate the spirit of Christ and just LOVE regardless of my circumstances in life.

I had a breakdown today after my social science quiz. I completely blanked during a 5 point question and i spiralled into this whole "it's so stupid how i cant be smart like my friends"

Thank you for this father. I fall for this trap all the time especially when I look around and see others prospering financially and just want the lives they have so I can go do X Y and Z and get out of debt, marry a woman, etc.
That is solid advice. When I was an educator my first rule of instruction, the one I stressed above all others to those I worked with, was never send your representative into teach for you. Your students will see through it in a minute and tune you out. Just like when I used to give guitar lessons to beginners. I never went past five sessions because I didn't want them to sound like me, I wanted them to find their own voice. God granted each one of us certain gifts and Christ said we will have to account for how we used those gifts. It's a whole lot easier being who you are than trying to be who you are not. That doesn't mean you don't try to change negative aspects or break bad habits, but don't be envious of anyone because when their head hits the pillow at night they also have doubts and concerns over whether or not they measure up. It's called being human.

I feel like at school we were doing it a lot, not painting the sunrise on your own, looking at someone's work and doing the same because we thought we won't do it correctly and we'll have a work worse than someone else's

I don’t know if this is going to reach Fr. Mike Schmitz, but I just want to thank him for making me a better Muslim. He helped me spiritually develop a lot, we have as Muslims 5 daily prayers and I used to struggle with them a lot and it reached a point where I didn’t pray them for 3 years straight.
He showed me how actually it’s more spiritual to have consistency rather than just depend on mood.
If this is going to reach man, I’ll say thank you.

I am dealing with a lot of this exact issue right now. I am trying to compare myself to others and be more like them. It's been a rough week and this video autoplayed for me after listeining to a Poco a Poco podcast. I feel like Jesus is telling me what I need to hear so I can find peace. So I can be more like him. I have a real problem all the time comparing myself in prayer. When i ask God for help i think 'if He is having no mercy on the poor tormented people of Ukraine why would He help me' and I'm right because He doesn't.

An Architect, a Painter, a Candlestick Maker....those are things we do, they are not representative of who we are. These things reflect what we enjoy or what we don't enjoy as we do them.
To be one with Christ means we are a Christ or a Christet, not just and/or simply "like" Him.
It is what we do as well as who we are as a congruent, gestalified totality within and of our being without preconceived notions of who or what we think we ought be (in recognition of the social and environmental constructs that forge paths for our subconscious/unconscious/Id/Ego/Shadow/Homeostatic/etc. drives to get rutted into without second thought).

Doing one is always worthwhile.

There was a study done a way back a while when and it said that men always associate what they do with who they are. I haven't checked to see if it's an outdated study but it doesn't appear to be.
Look at yourself naked 7 times every day for a week. That's who you are. That's the son. Christ is in there, in that gestalt of being because you love and desire and strive to be a force of good. And, that's all you really have to have in your heart, in your chest, in your knowledge base, in your mirror.

Parent here! Father, I find this hard because I'm a mother. Speak wisdom to us here: We are to imitate Christ but Christ had no children (and, in my reading of the New Testament, the Lord often seems SO annoyed at naturally human things. He sure was outraged at the apostles falling asleep in Gethsemane. Lord, if you're mad at them for taking long hikes behind you, you're not even going to remotely be kind to the years of sleep deprivation I'm going through). Mary was a mother but her mothering years are unknown to us. Without a role model, I default my goals and hopes to other mothers on social media -- people I can SEE. Yikes! Please pray for us parents.

What about those who don’t paint the sunrise because they think nothing they paint will ever be close/good enough?
I'm not just comparing myself to others because they seem better than me. I also compare lyfestyles that for me is like "I wish I could live like this". Everyday I think to myself the sins I constantly do, what do I do for God, and how can I even conceieve going to heaven when I'm such a selfish person. The mere fact of thinking "I'm probably going to heaven" is such a selfish thing for me, or wanting things instead of thinking on what I really need which is God. I fear the final judgement and not being with God. I wish God could tell me why I think or feel like I think or feel, or if I'm doing enough, I'm tired of everything. Nearly every single thought I have is a sin. My intrusive thoughts makes some disgusting images. I wish I could program myself so my flesh stopped existing and my will is replaced by the one of God. Idk how does God talk to you people, but I'm jelaous of you.
Aside of this anxiety I have. I consider my ADHD and ASD overlap a curse, that is only there to make my life harder, just like Job. I also feel like Time is my prison and people interrupting me are the prison guard.
