Great concept, having patron "choose" via Skype! Also, Keith continues to be one of my favorite RUclips nerd heroes! Is there anything he doesn't know?
Kieth doesn't know how to pronounce the name "Audubon", famous American naturalist and ornithologist. In a previous episode, Keith manages to mangle that name. Unlike everyday words, names can be tricky. This was one he stumbled on.
A Kiwi picked an item from 1772 about the 'recent' transit of Venus, which coincides with Lt James Cook's voyage to Tahiti to record that event. Then he circumnavigated around New Zealand.
Well, in regards to asbestos in mining lamps, back then miners was dealing with Miner's Lung from inhaling coal dust. Pretty much adding asbestos would be like chugging Draino and following it with a hemlock chaser. The asbestos would be the least of their worries, the bigger worry would be either explosion, cave in, asphyxiation, drowning from water ingress, in some really deep mines being cooked/boiled alive, or getting Miner's Lung.
The WGoD is a wonderful concept, and this episode took it to a new level. Brilliant! Okay, here we go: Top row, third drawer from the left, the card exactly halfway back. Cheers. :)
Brady always complains about there not being pictures, but I have to say, I actually kind-of enjoy seeing different people's handwriting from the past 🤓

As much as we today have the right reaction to the mention of asbestos, we got to give credit for the idea of a woven nonflammable material. We still use them today =, although we now make the fibers out of glass or ceramics
And the fabric of the mantles used to be impregnated with thorium dioxide which glowed a nice bright white when heated by the flame. Problem is, it's radioactive.

This was a lot of fun. But even with the Patreon notification and clicking "the bell" I still had to search in my feed to find this video. Thanks, RUclips algorithm!
Nice video! I am not sure if this is related but gas mantles used to contain asbestos. So we kind of used asbestos for lighting. It does deal well with heat after all ;)
The gloves are just a theatrical device for the index cards. Brady's video moment. "The gloves of destiny" he calls them. Normally, those gloves are used when handling physical objects, like wood, metal and glass. They reduce sensitivity, so when turning pages of manuscripts, tears are more likely with gloves on. So they take them off for manuscripts. Likely they are vigorously washing their hands prior to touching the manuscripts (off camera).

I would bet The White Gloves of Destiny shield against open flame even better than asbestos.
@@mcnultyssobercompanion6372 Honestly the best part about the experience was getting to keep the gloves!

That's why he works with TRS. He was there for many of the cataloged events.

From "Pointe Venus" to be accurate. Beautiful black sand beach.
Haha, what a coincidence!
That was the first thing I thought of; the correlation of Cooks observation of the 1769 transit being selected by a New Zealander.
S**t man, that was great!

It wasn't mentioned, but wouldn't this asbestos safety lamp idea pre-date the gas mantle for gas lighting?

Why do you wear gloves for the index cards but not the actual manuscripts?
Because they are more clumsy with the gloves, and could tear the paper.
And they're magic.

They will sometimes wear rubber gloves with especially old manuscripts. But never cloth :)
