Herman Von Petri -- and Ceres spent almost as long on the books as a planet as Pluto did, and got removed from them for pretty much the same reason: they discovered a bunch of other things in similar orbits.
Don Sample, indeed. Even now Ceres ranks as a dwarf planet on par with Pluto. If not for the fact there are so many other objects in its orbit Ceres would fit the technical definition of a planet today.
If you pause and read the Herschel letter, it's a "I don't have the right kind of instrument with me right now, may I suggest..." sort of letter. The one James picked is the real confirmation.
*item describing important astronomical data* Brady: eh... *letter saying, "My uncle died - here's some of his old stuff"* Brady: THIS IS AMAZING! THE GLOVES ARE YOURS!
Objectivity is without a doubt one of the most underappreciated channels on RUclips. When you compare the quality of video with the number of views, it feels like you've discovered a cool underground band and you can't understand why everyone hasn't heard of them.
This should be a flagship episode for your channel. The material alone is fantastic. The luck to get such iconic topics is rare, and back to back is righteous. This is a great example for the Royal Society. The how, why, what, and if questions are asked.(plus the good joke on the black border). Kieth, Brady, and James set up an expectation into Maths and show a desire to view Maths' history. And kapow! Here is Ceres and Newton , History and Collections, Interest and Sharing!
And here I thought James was particularly unlucky based on the Derangements video, but now we're seeing he's the head of the leader board for white glove pulls. Well done, Doctor Grime!
Pardon me for blowing my own horn a bit...but when I saw Ceres I IMMEDIATELY thought of the asteroid. I can remember Mick Marinchak doing a book report in 4th grade on the discovery by that Eyetalian guy. And the Newton stuff is cool too....I didn't realize Newton had a residence in Lincolnshire. Great pull, Grimey!👍👍😇😎
There's scope for doing the same thing with the R.S. Fellows & Members list. Randomly selecting a member from the long history and finding out about their life and work and how and why they became a member. Lot of things to discover there, and also see if their work is still valid today or has been supplanted by newer discovery. It could be called 'on the shoulders of giants'....quoting Newton to Hooke.
"Frederick Manning" and I immediately though of F. E. Manning, but it's probably not the same one. Manning must be pretty common. Would be interesting to see what the Royal Society has on F. E. Manning, though. I love his book on "Old New Zealand", but it's not exactly scientific in any sense, haha
When you're handling the actual pages it's now the practice to use clean, bare hands. It's less likely to damage fragile documents than with clumsy gloved hands
Been offline for a while and am wondering what happened to the thumbnails? Multi coloured text spread all over the screen is eye catching but hardly fitting to this type of content.

Royal Society = sience = Best
Logic theory approves.. maybe
Don't short sell the Ceres letter. They just discovered the asteroid belt!

James Grime is my favourite Brady Haran-character!

Right?!
We don't need gloves all the fingers are open on both hands
Ceres is very interesting from a mathematician's viewpoint since Gauss rose to fame by determining its orbit.
Dr who? 😂
I love how Brady got visibly upset by the Everest comment - like Keith knew that that was exactly what he should say to get under Brady's skin.
0:44 "...kind of plant." "It's not not very mathematical" says a person wearing t-shirt showing mathematical structure center of sunflower creates :-)

I don't care how many crazy boring letters the white gloves lead you to, please don't ever retire the white gloves of destiny!

Woo, discovery of Ceres! Really cool to see Herschel's contemporary response to it!!
These were some great picks by the gloves! Newtonian and Planets.
such a lovely and calming voice
Thank you! I found this episode especially interesting. The 'Royal Society' is an amazing enterprise!
James reply of "It can be," in regards to it not being very mathematically. 🙂
Letter: "...who was suddenly taken from us"
Brady, IMMEDIATELY: "I'm so _excited_ about this!"
And here I thought James was particularly unlucky based on the Derangements video, but now we're seeing he's the head of the leader board for white glove pulls. Well done, Doctor Grime!
😂
These documents MUST be preserved in a digital version, are they? If so, is it accessible? Thanks
I'm always impressed by the dedication to archival preservation exhibited by the British.
Definitely the luckiest dip into the card catalogue so far.
Love to see Kieth and James in one video. They are amazing. Keith's voice is so charming and almost hypnotizing
I think it was called Ceres Ferdinandea after the king of Naples, Ferdinand
Jaaaaaames!!! Please pick something numberphily!
Luis N -- Now maybe he can do a Numberphile video on how those observations of Ceres position get turned into its orbital elements.
Don Sample that's more sixty simbol's material buuuut, why not?
He picked something sixty symbolsy
Austin Washburn Still cool in 'ma book!
What a thoroughly enjoyable episode. Well done guys.
These video's comment section has to be the best on RUclips. Plenty of good info to go and further look into, and no BS.
This was one of the best videos. Really lucky draws.
This might be the luckiest one so far!
The circular etching at 7:07 is amazing!! How is something like that achieved?!?
Anyone who wants to argue that Pluto is a planet, should take the time to look into the history of Ceres.
:-o Dr. Grime AND Keith in one episode? Not sure my heart can take this :-o

You don't have that many viewers but at least everyone loves the videos!
love james !
Getting a bit carried away is what we're here to do, B R A D Y .

It could be called 'on the shoulders of giants'....quoting Newton to Hooke.
Wow. Excellent job. I really enjoyed that.
Great work as always.
'an Astronomical term we no longer use'. Gets back in time machine. The timeline must be purged.
Great video Brady!
Brady wasn't having the "Mt Everest" assessment. At least not until he saw more!
Great work guys.... keep up the great stuff
I don't know if "smoking gun" is the most sensitive language to use when discussing a letter about an untimely death.
Kieth is the best.
I don't like it - I love it.
You guys are the best.
The Ultimate Crossover!
Sorry if this is an obvious question, but does anyone know if they photograph or scan or somehow otherwise digitally preserve their collections?
Ive been reading the Anton Van Leeuwenhoek collection from phil trans, they scan it in, but it looks like a photo
You're gonna have to wash those white gloves now...since they touched so much Grime.
Nailed it :D
Those picks are pretty cool :-)
James hasn't had any videos on bradys maths channel or on his own... 😔😔😔
we need to get destin on the show
white gloves of destin-y
yeah, we've done that! :)

Always interesting! :-)
Did you manage to mispronounce both "Newtoniana" as "Newtonia" and "Ferdinandea" as "Fernandia" ?
now he can never come back again. it would ruin the magic of the luck
Why interrupt Keith just to tell him to read on, I find that quite rude.
Planet, plant - just one letter off.
Why doesn't the guy with glasses have to wear gloves?
When you're handling the actual pages it's now the practice to use clean, bare hands. It's less likely to damage fragile documents than with clumsy gloved hands
James pick some arty thing :D
Brady's being a bit egocentric
Keith ASMR please!

Grime seems a bit shied out or his voice is a bit rough
#GreatPull 😃✌️
