  • Shot at 300mm (286mm seems to be where my lens is stuck these days) with Extended Teleconverter and 2x Teleconverter on. Sharpness suffers slightly and of course the extra magnification makes for some noise. But the Apennine Mountains are quite visible.

great footage- thinking of getting this lens for shooting stills of the moon too- May I ask which 2x teleconverter you used and do you know is the ETC mode can be used for stills as well (I have a Panasonic GX8 and GH3)- thank you

I used the built in 2x teleconverter (i.e. a secondary crop mode) on top of the crop mode ... no physical teleconverter, as that really makes things mushy I have found ...

Thanks for your reply- sorry - a little confused- not sure what you mean by 'built in 2x teleconverter and secondary crop mode on top of the crop mode..?' are you talking about Ex Tele Conversion mode or digital zoom or just the natural crop made with video compared to stills with ETC on top of that? With the GX8 I have the option of shooting 4K and cropping in to 1080p or shoot in 1080p in ETC mode like in this artcle here which seems to prove the latter method creates a better image- cheesycam.com/panasonic-gh4-4k-crop-vs-1080p-ex-tele-mode/ - there is a mode in panasonic cameras that allows for ETC and another mode on top fo that called '2x teleconverter'?

actually I see I can add both ETC mode and either 2x or 4x digital zoom- is that what you mean? thank you

    Nice!
How are u liking the 100-300?
I've the GM1 as well, but I fear that the 100-300 would be too much big compared to the camera, so that handling could be difficult. I'm also considering the 45-150 :))
    Thanks!

I've thought about the 45-150 as a nice small travel companion. I might grab one at some point. The 100-300 is a terrific lens, although somewhat large. I have the German tripod collar for it so it balances nicely on a tripod with the GM1 hanging off the end. I have shot them hand held for fun, but I would never want to shoot it that way in the field. The EVF of the G6 makes it a far better companion to the big lenses.

Update ... I just bought a 45-150 so I can sell my 14-140 and carry a lens half the size. A tiny travel kit really matters to me, and the 45-150 is much sharper anyway. All in all, big win. But I am *not* giving up the excellent 100-300. One day I will try to get the 100-400, but at triple the price, it is not a lens to buy on a whim :-)

Without any hesitation, I use the Panasonic 100-300 on my GM5. Feels fine to me. Yes this lens, dwarfs the GM5 body. However, ergonomics work for me. When not tripod mounted, I have plenty of lens to hold on to.

Those are both software features in Panasonic cameras. Extended teleconverter is a video crop mode, and 2x teleconverter is a stills digital zoom mode. They can be used together and work adequately.
