I appreciated the themes of the film, but the script was rather pedestrian. As someone who has worked at Disney, first in the parks, later in the studio, I saw soooo many opportunities that were wasted.
Disney is a greedy corporation like everyone else. While the rest of the country bewails its outcast state against the wealthy 1%, they neglect to include the greed of the Disney corporation in their attacks because the company does such a lovely job hiding its capitalist cronies behind the idea that everything is about magic and a charming mouse is in charge.
This movie is about how happy people are trying to be all the time creating these fake worlds and characters. How all kids grow up in pretend of many things being real just like Santa and the tooth fairy and especially Disneyland. We always try to Escape from tomorrow while unfortunately in the end it's still a much darker world. Still i do Love Disneyland and Disney in general but the message behind this film is indeed true.
And even then, check out the review by That Jerk With A Camera. He films in Disney all the time, both positive and negative, and he is rarely harassed by park security, which seems to be the big deal about this movie, how the producers were all James Bond fuckers sneaking shit in and out of the parks.
its all about freedom. i went when i was 12 and disney is so secure and all inclusive, my friend and i just woke up at 6 and left the hotel room and his parents said "well see you at midnight" and that was it. we did what ever we wanted. the buses would take you anywhere you wanted for free. it was like getting to be an adult for a week when you are 12 except even better, an adult with no responsibilities. it might have been the best week of my life.
I made sure to see this at Ebertfest in April of 2013 because it hadn't been released and no one was sure if they would manage to get it released for obvious legal reasons. I'm so glad to see that it's available for streaming on Amazon. It's not a great, great film, but I love what they accomplish, the subversiveness of shooting a feature film on the grounds of the Disney theme parks is worth the price of admission alone!
This movie didn't ruin Disneyland for me as much as it made me think about why I go there. I go there because my life is boring and I want to be somewhere that makes me forget about it. I want to escape from tomorrow.
I know this comment is ancient now but seriously, did you need a movie to tell you that you go to theme parks to enjoy yourself and become detached from the real world for a while?
I really wanted to like this movie. But it's definitely a film where the production backstory is more interesting than the film itself. It took forever for the horror aspects to actually get started and even so, it didn't really thrill me or make me feel suspense. And that ending.....just...I couldn't stand it. Never has a film left me feeling more disappointed.
It's a sham, for sure. The trailer makes it seem like a more light hearted affair with some creepy overtones (not very different from Super 8 or something in a similar vein). The worst offenses by far are from the horrendous script (which, even if we're dealing with a surrealist piece, makes absolutely zero sense) and the atrocious acting. The fact that people are comparing this to Lynch and Kubrick, in a positive way, is baffling to me. It's more like a Creepypasta written by a 12 year old.
That's the problem with standards today, everyone wants shitty jump scares. This movie is a psychological horror. And a damn good one at that especially considering its budget and how they had to film it
I was disturbed after watching this. Makes it less creepy hearing the directors view I understand his point. I'm Disney fan at heart and I still find it to be a happy place just filled with WIERDOS sometimes :-)
There is kind of a dark side to Disney World. Like, the new rides are new and glossy and nice, but then there's the really old rides that no one even bothers with all that much like the Carousel of Progress, those, umbrella flying tram things, whatever they are, the people mover. All the old rides are a bit creepy. I think they got rid of a lot of those rides I mentioned but I haven't been in years.
kids dig it. it can make some lasting memories for them. when the voyager used to play there there was a dance floor and a pretty steady regular gathering of kids with passes that went just to hang out like you would at any mall or park.
I've never been to any of the Disney places and even tho i know it is a place for kids, i think it is too happy! lol. Its like when you walk inside you get all cheerful and as soon as you walk out, you burst out crying.
Having visited Disney World both as a child and an adult with children of my own, I understood the dark elements portrayed. The surrealist imagery and feeling on the rides and standing in long lines as well as wandering around was very familiar to me. Throw in an apparently loveless marriage, the main character finding out he's fired on the same day of his last trip to Disneyworld, and the stress of being at an amusement park and I'm actually surprised more mental breakdowns don't occur there in real life. It was a creepy, sad, funny, tale that worked on many different levels... at least for me. I'd give it 8 out of 10 stars.
So is this already out, or when is it released? Also I remember hearing something about the secret hotel in the middle of disneyland people could stay in. Anybody know about that?
I'm compelled to say that same thing, but it smacks of telling someone there is no devil and they give you that 'ole Baudelaire line about "The greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world that he did not exist." Ain't nobody got time fo' that. In fact I hope it's true, because wow... talk about going the extra mile. Damn! I think it worked. Now I kinda want to go to Disneyland.
Why does this movie get so much hate, I personally thought it was a dark, fun, mysterious, ominous, horror film, it really has that old Disney vibe, that makes you feel like it’s an old Disney film released years ago. The fact that it was filmed without Disney’s permission gives it even more creepier vibes. The score in the background was AMAZING 👏👏👏It actually felt so surreal like an old Disney score from the 1930’s or 1940’s. Overall I love this movie as a fun cult horror film to watch. It gets more sh’t than it deserves.
I thought it was pretty cool. The scenes in B/W are worth watching in themselves. (all I had a a kid was B/W, and it shows details very well...) It is interesting to see how the places have changed, and been maintained, since the day they were opened. I have not been back to either resort for over thirty years... As a child, I remember my dad, who had a private plane, flying over the resort of Epcott, during the years they were building it... It was just raw land, and they built it out of nothing... We witnessed the construction of it, by flying out there off and on. My mom remembers Walt Disney driving an old tin lizzy at DisneyLand, and he was a kind man, who would stop, and talk to people. The fact that Disney let this movie go on, shows they approve of it anyways... A lot of free advertising in my book, the controversy of it.... I suppose people are jealous of success, and can rag on something that has been around for years, contributing nothing in life, themselves, and knock somebody's work in the process. The movie is a statement, and nothing more. Watch it if you want, make your own deductions on it....
I don't think Disney approves of the movie so per say, they just know that by going after it, the attention for the film would be much higher than if they just didn't acknowledge it. Just look what happened with North Korea and The Interview.
I went to Disneyland in Hong Kong with my wife once when we were still dating... I don't see how anyone could have anything negative to say about it that they couldn't say about any other theme park. It's just a happy place with a nice atmosphere. Come on, people. If you need to hate Disney because it's a big corporation, then just do that, but stop pretending like everything it stands for is pure evil.
Based on the fact that most of the comments refer to "this guy" or "this asshole" when at least half a dozen people appear in the video, I would have to agree with you.
Escape from Tomorrow is an example of a b-movie made by a guerrilla filmmaking company. It did exactly get a good first impression due to the fact that the movie is at a lesser quality than the popular a-movies due to the company having a crew that was mostly made up of friends and family.
Yeah, that was some of the most smarmy intellectualism I've seen for some time. " [it] only seems to be operating on this mundane domestic level" or "a gorilla gesture of freedom inside a privatized corporate space"
this movie looks pretty interesting. It seems to give a different perspective on America's, and also the World's, obsession with Disney and how people can be so sucked into a place, idea, concept that it consumes them with them not even knowing it. I know that many people have a sort of love obsession with disney but at the same time, that facade of happiness covers up such a level of dislike and distrust.
Paloma Schmidt you would think it does, but it doesn’t. It’s not even pretentious, you have to try in order to be pretentious, the movie was just inept.
I never enjoyed Disneyland. My friend grew up on Disney movies and I think developed this unrealistic view of marriage because she was constantly in fantasy-land. At my job, this older woman showed up decked out in Mickey Mouse accessories: Mickey ears, finger and toenails, earrings, mouse-shaped glasses, bracelets, necklace, flip flops t-shirt and pants. She said she went to Disneyland almost every weekend; This confirmed my belief that Disneyland was just a fantasy escape for the mental.
This is actually pretty consistent with the "flavor" of journalism they provide. I bet you were born in 97 and used the term "inconsistency" because you thought it would make you sound intellectual.
1996 my dad passed out in the hotel from eating Disney good food...we had to call the Disney police my brother and I to get the key! yet he went on all the rides and had fun! so did my brother my cousin and Goofy ball shocker from my little brother
for fucks sake, why do you make life so harder for your selves we all have memories with these cartoons, if you are yourself and are not a wanna be theres no way you can get brainwashed it doesnt matter what they show you, its how you get it.
I DONT UNDERSTAND. ITLOOKS LIKE 10 YEAR OLDS ARE GETTING ALL THE UPVOTES ON COMMENT PAGES FOR THIS MOVIE. IS THAT THE ONLY AUDIENCE ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW CATERED TO?
Hahaha! PERFECT comment! Did you see how fucking creased he got when that guy compared this shit to a Ben Stiller movie?? I thought his fucking head was gonna explode :D
It's a great art house movie, the only problem is distribution, I looked around for a way to pay to see it online but couldn't find it so had to torrent it. What about itunes or Vimeo on demand?

This movie made me question my existence
Yes definitely. In general this movie can make you question a lot of things.
I appreciated the themes of the film, but the script was rather pedestrian. As someone who has worked at Disney, first in the parks, later in the studio, I saw soooo many opportunities that were wasted.
Are you at liberty to explain is it more of greedy corporate thing that's wrong with Disney or is it pure satanic evil ?
Disney is a greedy corporation like everyone else. While the rest of the country bewails its outcast state against the wealthy 1%, they neglect to include the greed of the Disney corporation in their attacks because the company does such a lovely job hiding its capitalist cronies behind the idea that everything is about magic and a charming mouse is in charge.
Andrew Mattison You must be a Disney stockholder.
Actually, yes. I work there too
*****
Well, Disney was a genius...
This movie is about how happy people are trying to be all the time creating these fake worlds and characters. We always try to Escape from tomorrow while unfortunately in the end it's still a much darker world. Still i do Love Disneyland and Disney in general but the message behind this film is indeed true.
But here's my question, is it good?
+George Baum it's a very love it or hate it. The background is more interesting than the movie itself imo
And even then, check out the review by That Jerk With A Camera. 6:31 I always hide behind that yellow wall during Survival in GTA V.
Holy shit i do to!
@titlewave Alright, orange..?
its all about freedom. i went when i was 12 and disney is so secure and all inclusive, my friend and i just woke up at 6 and left the hotel room and his parents said "well see you at midnight" and that was it. we did what ever we wanted. the buses would take you anywhere you wanted for free. it was like getting to be an adult for a week when you are 12 except even better, an adult with no responsibilities. it might have been the best week of my life.
Actor "its like a Ben Stiller comedy" - Filmaker *Disgusted* "its NOT a Ben Stiller comedy"!

It's more like a Creepypasta written by a 12 year old.
+Tina Marie a film like The Revenant?
IKR what the fuck was up with that dumb cat fever XD That's the least scary thing ever.
It wasn't a horror movie at all. It was a character study about how a pathetic man's ego destroyed his family.
That's the problem with standards today, everyone wants shitty jump scares. This movie is a psychological horror. And a damn good one at that especially considering its budget and how they had to film it
Wait people like this movie?
I was disturbed after watching this. Makes it less creepy hearing the directors view I understand his point. I'm Disney fan at heart and I still find it to be a happy place just filled with WIERDOS sometimes :-)
i never went to disneyland, never even watched cartoons, so i cannot relate this at all but will still give it a watch because i like how indie it is.
Fun for the novelty factor. A little too pervy for my tastes. Escape From Tomorrow deals with a worthwhile social issue.
"almost like they're going off the cliff together" I loved this movie but I didn't catch this reference or think of it, thats awesome
gotta love vice for good information I wish they had a tv show
its great to see that jim is still alive!!! Did you get cured from Cat flu?
Fuck thats horrible
XD Fuckin' cat flu... Is that even based on a Disney urban legend. I get getting rabies or something from the cats but... Fucking shit XD
Now we have COVID!
Saw this movie in theaters tonight. Definitely my favorite film of 2013 so far.
Bruh
Meh
Thanks buddy! Was looking for it.

That guy does a great Ed Helms impression. Also...I'm excited to see this film!
Remember guys it's not a Ben Stiller comedy.
Brilliant movie, one of my favorites of all time. Mostly because of the genious application of the music.
i can't wait until it comes out. the trailer looks crazy
kids dig it. it can make some lasting memories for them. when the voyager used to play there there was a dance floor and a pretty steady regular gathering of kids with passes that went just to hang out like you would at any mall or park.
He so bad wants disney to respond or even acknowledge that this 6th grade film project was done in their parks 😂
I've never been to any of the Disney places and even tho i know it is a place for kids, i think it is too happy! lol. Its like when you walk inside you get all cheerful and as soon as you walk out, you burst out crying.
For anyone asking you can find this on Netflix.
thanks!!
looking forward to this
that second guy was just talking to hear himself talk, he didn't even say anything real. he's just like disney lmfao
I just saw it on itunes!

For some reason ive really wanted to see it because of all the hype i still cant believe it was filmed with iphones like thats so cool
I'm also glad they are not sticking to one set video type, but wouldn't mind clear deferentiation when they do change
So is this already out, or when is it released? Also I remember hearing something about the secret hotel in the middle of disneyland people could stay in. Anybody know about that?
looks trippy as fuck

ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW is having its UK Premiere this Thursday 14th November at CINE-REBIS The London underground Film Festival.

jonathan lethem loves this movie!
vice tends to do this to me a lot and its PISSING ME THE FUCK OFF GOD FUCKING DAMN IT.

I... for many many reasons love the movie! I would call it "Amazing!" Blunt and clear!
Disney and MK Ultra. If you know where he coming from you can see the message.
Or is just a bad movie
@@punklover99 He is spot on. Wake up idiot.
I went to Disneyland in Hong Kong with my wife once when we were still dating... I don't see how anyone could have anything negative to say about it that they couldn't say about any other theme park. My little sister would always try to run out into the street when she was little. So we put her on a leash like that kid. haha
super excited to see paul mccarthy there!!!

oh my god the boy with completely black eyes gets me every time.
I think they used the 5D for the park scenes and the Red One in the greenscreen/studio scenes.
Thank you for realizing the obvious, bless you.
EXACTLY!
7:08 to 7:25...Ass kissing in it's purest form. LOL!
it opens in limited theaters tomorrow...check the official page for the theaters it will open in
disney is so magical when you are a kid its spooky
Oh my god, this movie was so bad.
Great weird indie film. Thanks for making me appreciate it more. - A big Disney fan who somehow didn’t hate it.

Free of charge? I had to watch a 30 second ad. THIRTY SECONDS I WILL NEVER GET BACK.
Interestingly enough, Jonathan Lethem is listed as the Disney Professor of Writing at Pomona College in California.
I never enjoyed Disneyland. My friend grew up on Disney movies and I think developed this unrealistic view of marriage because she was constantly in fantasy-land. This will work as a cult classic
This movie was fkn horrrrrible.. they stole a hour and a half away from me.. nothing to do with Disney
Can someone please tell me what the fuck this video is about?
The descriptions very brief and im 7 minutes in and still have no fucking clue.
LOL
No closed caption !
This is actually pretty consistent with the "flavor" of journalism they provide. I bet you were born in 97 and used the term "inconsistency" because you thought it would make you sound intellectual.
man i'm keen!
think what you want about eraserhead it's still an important film.
Wow gotta say 10/10 Best movie ever made. The acting is terrific. You find the hidden mickey mouse. HIgh humid. and has a grat plotline
Hmm, I may give it a chance. I enjoy movies that deal metaphors to project a social situation.
1996 my dad passed out in the hotel from eating Disney good food...we had to call the Disney police my brother and I to get the key! yet he went on all the rides and had fun! so did my brother my cousin and Goofy ball shocker from my little brother
Yeah he gets these moments of dry content but he always comes back with good stuff after a while.
....just when you thought you'd seen it all
Its on Amazon and Itunes.
lol so many people are getting pissy bc they think this movie is Exposing The Evils of Walt Disney the Man Himself or something
for fucks sake, why do you make life so harder for your selves we all have memories with these cartoons, if you are yourself and are not a wanna be theres no way you can get brainwashed it doesnt matter what they show you, its how you get it.
Rupert Murdoch pulls the strings attached to Vice. RIP
Can't fucking wait.
and yet his point is still valid
I DONT UNDERSTAND. ITLOOKS LIKE 10 YEAR OLDS ARE GETTING ALL THE UPVOTES ON COMMENT PAGES FOR THIS MOVIE. IS THAT THE ONLY AUDIENCE ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW CATERED TO?
Hahaha! PERFECT comment! Did you see how fucking creased he got when that guy compared this shit to a Ben Stiller movie?? I thought his fucking head was gonna explode :D
It's not in the Australian store, I bet it is only in the US store.
It's a great art house movie, the only problem is distribution, I looked around for a way to pay to see it online but couldn't find it so had to torrent it. What about itunes or Vimeo on demand?
I worked for Disney for 25+ years. Working for Disney management was like smoking marijuana - the harder you suck the higher you get.
"it almost feels like drugs....acid?"
WHEERE CAN I FIND IT?
I found this quite entertaining. Stupid script, yes, but creative.
We’re all filmmakers!
Great film with many themes, edge of my seat the whole time, funny and panic educing, must watch.
I like how nobody in this thing actually knows what this movie is
I took my family about 2 yrs. ago was felt creepy a couple of times. watched a parent scream at a kid till he puked pry due to distress more than actual nausea, went out for a cig at night and caught employee drinking. pleasure island was pry the worst got hit up to buy some ex and coke in front of my kid out of the blue as well. just standing at the bus stop waiting to go back to hotel. it was weird.
like an older version of stu from hangover
Kinda sorta reminds me of the creepypasta Abandoned By Disney.
Yeah
i actually like it
"Normal people" also don't do extraordinary things. They stay "safe" trying to follow the perceived 'norms' of society; afraid to stand out in any way, ending up being forgotten in a shorter time. Walt Disney himself was a forward thinker and did things that nobody else did.

Dare to be different!
what do you mean? With like the different flavors of shows?
This man summed up the deeper realities..love the shots..blkand white was genius...the side plots wi the evil queen and the nurse(..the girls too of course, but they were more central really)..
Jim was played SO well..typecast perfection on that.
Love this film..thanks for this docu
I've never been to disneyland. Do you have to have gone to disneyland to understand this?
