  • In this episode, I discuss how to use herbal infused body oils for dry skin and so much more with Kami McBride. I know you’re going to get so many ideas for your own apothecary of effective, kid-safe home remedies as you listen to Kami!
This episode is in celebration of her online course, Handcrafted Herbal Oils. This course shows you exactly how to make your own shelf-stable and potent oils using the simplest of ingredients. (Not to mention, they’ll be a fraction of the cost of purchasing ready-made herbal oil.)
► ► ► Here's the link where you can register for Kami's free tutorial for Fool-Proof Herbal Body Butter (and go on to register for Handcrafted Herbal Oils if you wish to): bit.ly/3h24Vlg
(Disclosure: This is an affiliate link. By using it, you help support this channel. Thanks!)
By the end of this episode, you’ll know:
► Why the difference between herbal infused oils and essential oils matters
► Why caring for your skin matters to the health of your nervous and lymphatic systems
► Why quantity matters when working with herbal infused oils
► The many benefits of making your own herbal infused oils, as opposed to buying them
► Why shelf-stability is such a big deal if you’re actually going to benefit from the herbal infused oils you apply to your body
Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:
“Master the art of your herbal oils and you can just ditch the toxic body care products, nourish and rejuvenate your skin, and take care of your family's health." (47:57)
In case you don't already know her, Kami is the author of The Herbal Kitchen, and online courses that help you build confidence and skill to use herbs in your daily life for self-care and as the core of your proactive health plan. Kami's 30 plus years of teaching herbal medicine is steeped in her calling to inspire a culture that embraces taking care of our bodies with healing herbs, a deep connection with the earth, and a lifestyle that passes this knowledge on to our children.
Kami has taught herbal medicine at the University of California San Francisco School of Nursing and the California Institute of Integral Studies. She has helped thousands of families learn to use herbs for prevention and self-care.
Kami's lifelong work is to inspire deep connection with the medicine of the plants, the lineage of home crafting natural remedies, and the wisdom of our bodies so that we can live a healing lifestyle.
I hope you’ll come away from this episode feeling as inspired as I was by everything Kami shared!

Rosalie, I oiled myself for the first time and I am dumbfounded! Not even sure if oils I am making (flowers from marigold and goldenrod) are good however the results are definite. Immediate calming relief of body tightness and localized pain on backside. Thanks for sharing the divine gift of herbalism!

Oils are under rated and a 'void' for people interested in using herbs for healing. Kami McBride is the best, imho, to learn how to use them....great to hear her true stories and thank you, Rosalee for having her back on your program.

I am so happy you both brought up Comfrey!
I have chronic deep bone pain and the Comfrey infused oil i make is the only thing that melts that pain!
I have read so much conflicting information about Comfrey; even for topical use.
Can I use Comfrey infused oil regularly or do I need to minimize its use to protect my liver? Can folks with a known liver condition use this oil regularly or only periodically?
This is such an amazing medicinal plant and it has been such an ally but I hesitate in using it or recommending it to people who would benefit because I just can’t get an answer to my above questions.
I would be so grateful to you both if you would share your opinions and wisdom on the matter. 💚

Love listening to you both ! I think another aspect of the herbal oil conversation is the vast array of different oils that are available and how each oil is extracted. Cold pressed vrs extractions that use chemicals (yuck) or the variety of shelf stability that exist for even expeller pressed oils. For example you would never want to infuse rose hip seed oil because it is extremely sensitive to going rancid and by the time your herb infusion was over, the oil would be bad. I wondered if you could recommend a book specifically about oil choices for herbal medicine because this is something I really want to understand 🫶🏽

How long does it take before a oil goes rancid?

    • @HerbsWithRosalee
      @HerbsWithRosalee  9 месяцев назад

It depends on many factors, especially the oil you are starting with. Some oils like olive oil and jojoba (which is actually a wax) are more shelf stable than others. Storage methods can also play a big role.

One important thing you didn't mention is do we use dried herb or fresh one to infuse the oil? Could you please tell me? This summer I I harvested a lot of st John's wort and dried it, can I use it to infuse the oil or I have to wait till next August? Please answer me as I'm desperate to make some..I thought to use it as dried not fresh, am I right? Thank you so much for the invaluable information you share with us. I'm going to get your books as a Christmas gift😊 this what I asked my friends to get me🙂🥰💚

Hi Sue, I prefer fresh St. John's Wort but you have to be very careful so as it doesn't mold. Kami has recently told me that people are using dried with success. She goes over this all more indepth in her course. You can see more information for that here: healingherbaloils.com/enroll-now?orid=10992&opid=109

@@HerbsWithRosalee thank you very much for your kind reply. Sadly I can't afford her courses or anything..as I live on the mountains in central Europe with no job but I do grow my food, keep chickens, forage and barter with small local farms, I'm ok just have no money to spend on such stuff. I had a look st her RUclips channel and even subscribed, which I'm going to unsubscribe, and she said nothing about how to do it, as if it's a top secret..I found some information about drying it first, then powder it and add few drops of vodka, let it sit overnight, then add oil, etc..anyway, it's really sad that such ancestral knowledge is being kept for only those who can pay. I totally understand people need to make a living but just sharing the basics will help tons of people who can't pay and encourage those who can to do the courses, etc. Thank you again and keep inspiring.👍

@@thelandofmint I'm sorry you didn't find what you were looking for on Kami's channel. Kami is an amazing human being who shares an abundance of knowledge for free. I know from personal experience how much it takes to create a single video for RUclips. Hours of work outside of the actual filming, thousands of dollars in equipment, sweet talking a begrudging husband to suddenly be a camera man :)... so I look at channels on RUclips and am amazed and grateful for whatever people have to share. Kami is definitely one of those.

@@HerbsWithRosalee I know it takes a lot of time and energy to make these videos but people who make them are rewarded by money, every view generates a bit, every ad too..I know it can be little but still it's money... the thing is many people forget that there're many people who can't afford paying for these courses..and I'm one of them, I don't even have a computer!! And I'm not complaining just sharing. Also, we buy your books(I mean collective you) when we can..what saddens me is that this knowledge was a common knowledge passed down from generation into another for 1000s ofyears...it was free and it should remain free..otherwise what's the point of community, solidarity, sharing, caring, love, and just being a human! I see myself as a lucky person as I travelled a lot before I settled down here on the mountains without any money but the happiest and healthiest I've ever been...and as I speak several languages I had the pleasure and honour of talking to indigenous people in their languages and I discovered a lot...in one of my trips to north Africa I spoke to the dwellers of the Atlas mountains and I saw mothers almost bathe their kids in Argan oil! They'd massage the oil into the skin of the child, all ages from 0 to 12 years and more...plenty of oil and at the time I didn't understand why..I asked and they said we've always been doing it this way, it soothes the child and makes them sleep well and be healthy! They would do this oil once a week....so my point is, what these herbalist say/ do is not new, it's a human heritage and having a monopoly over it saddens me beyond words. I mean no belittling or attack on anyone as I I highly respect you all, i just wish a bit more sharing of real info, instead of brewing a tea or making a salad dressing...real info is what we are here for. All the best and peace and love to all.

@@thelandofmint Thanks for sharing your perspective. I am glad to hear you've created such a beautiful life for yourself. I strongly disagree that anyone I promote is creating a monopoly. There are herbalists who make their living as herbalists. I'm one of them. Kami's one of them. And in order to put food on my table, I charge for some of my teachings. If I didn't charge money I couldn't do as much as I do with herbs. I'd have to get another job and then try to fit in herbal sharing when I have time. You're also mistaken about earning money from RUclips. I choose not to run ads and I make no money from RUclips. Instead, each episode costs me hundreds of dollars and a lot of time. I also have a crew of seven (paid) people who make this channel possible! The only reason I'm able to commit to doing this each and every week is that people sign up for my courses. In other words, my students make my free offerings possible. I am deeply grateful for this reciprocal relationship. And I know it's appreciated because hardly a day goes by that someone doesn't thank me for my generous offerings. And I'm very aware that not everyone in the world can afford my classes, which is one of the reasons I offer so much for free, each and every week. I'm sad to hear that you don't think tea is "real info" or that using food as medicine, like in a salad dressing is worthwhile. As tea and food as medicine are strong foundations for herbal medicine and often my most trusted remedies. In all, I think we have very different perspectives about herbalism in general.
