I think this moment is the single thing in the show that's any good.
Yes, the Jedi do conscript infants and children to become warrior monks.
However, in a sensible world, Padawans don't get sent on potentionally dangerous missions. They do busy work and train train train until they graduate to Knighthood or some similar rank, at which point they should get sent on peacekeeping missions at most.
Investigating what might be a rising Dark Force threat, closely linked to an "assassin" who has *successfully* murdered *several* *Jedi* *MASTERS* is NOT a peacekeeping mission.

Every death here is a result of Osha deliberately letting her murderous sister escape in Ep2. However, she isn't alone. Stupidity is helping. Jecki is responsible for leading to her own death by shooting down Yord's confrontational plan and instead proposing that dumb disguise plan in Ep2. Sol is also responsible for agreeing with Jecki's dumb plan and then letting potion-Sith escape with a slap on the wrist, despite having assisted in killing a Jedi Master (not to mention the previous apothecary disappearing under mysterious circumstances from a guy dealing in poisons). Considering Yord's plans usually mean a more aggressive confrontation with the target and mind-reading, if they'd gone with his plan, they might all still be alive. Including the Wookie Jedi.
So Yord and the unnamed Jedi are probably the only real victims in these series of events since Ep2. Victim, but Yord is still an idiot. But everyone is a colossal idiot in this show. Everyone dying landed with a dull thud. Just like their lifeless bodies.
Honestly, I care about everyone dying as much as Sol apparently did. Hardly a wrinkle in his mood. He just got up and strolled out. Didn't even check for life from anyone and just dipped out. He didn't even accomplish the mission to see what happened to Kelnacca.

Man, that example of killing Yord is the perfect example of why such a rule NEVER existed and if it did, would never be applied in such a way. If someone has demonstrated they are a threat to the extent that they have killed someone, weapon or not you do whatever to detain/neutralise them.

In the EU it's established that one of the most extreme measures Jedi take is cut off the hands explicitly because it stops them from being effective duelists and even their ability to channel force powers. This is why Anakin doesn't hesitate for a second to "disarm" Dooku, but hesitates to kill him once he's ACTUALLY unarmed.
Sol should know that a Sith isn't unarmed just by losing a lightsaber. He isn't even truly unarmed without hands, like Dooku was, but at that point, you MIGHT try to subdue him. The fact that Sol backed off at all is just Disney writing, let alone backing off when he still had full control of the force.

I mean you can even acknowledge summary execution as a moral evil but still *totally* understand why someone would do it in the heat of the moment. I think it would set a bad precedent if the Jedi just went around murdering disarmed prisoners- Anakin executing Dooku in Revenge is very clearly presented as a step in the wrong direction. This is all from a strictly "clinical" standard of ethics, though. On an emotional level, I lose respect for Sol sparing him after watching this guy slaughter all of his friends. It makes me feel like he can't have cared about them very much if he's willing to even risk the chance of Smilo going on to do something like this again.

Similar to the LOTR reactions they can gush over their favourite parts and analyse in real time as the movies evolve through the prequels and Disney era. Id honestly rather they stick to the 6 films. Those movies dont exist, and we have already heard them DISCUSS in great detail on whats wrong with them. I'd be much more interested in them discussing the good the series once stood for and even meriting the prequels in the ways that they deserve while revealing their flaws (which their are certainly many). Im tired of Disney Star Wars. I only care to express pride in what's good. Analyze it, critique it, celebrate it, and be hopefully inspired by it.
Constantly watching Disney Star Wars can sometimes give a bleak sensation of what can be achieved in filmmaking. It's just as good to take a break from it and cultivate the best examples of what we have to offer while being hopeful for its vision of future films.

If only we had a character challenged to defeat Jedi without a weapon who could have been exploring options to level the playing field while adhering to the letter of the rule. That sure would have been a great way to organically establish cortosis in the show before it was sprung on us. Maybe it could have happened during an existing conversation in, say, an apothecary shop, or while walking in the woods, when a character was already clearly spitballing possible ways to kill a Jedi while weaponless.

And despite the various benefits of having incredibly strong armor covering a large portion of his body, making him largely immune to conventional weapons, it can easily be argued that the various drawbacks of the bugs were so severe that they were instrumental to his downfall.
In the land of Disney on the other hand, almost everybody and their grandam's tiny dog apparently possess armor that is immune to everything from blasters to lightsabers... This is like the writers saying "Plot armor isn't obvious enough, lets step this up a notch."

Rereading the old good EU stuff really puts into perspective how stupid Disney Star Wars is in. For context, in the Hand of Thrawn duology(SPOILER ALERT) there's a bit where Luke investigates a group of pirates and is ultimately captured. How he's captured is smart where the pirates lure him into a gravity chamber and separate him from his lightsaber. The pirates explained they had it built in case they ran into Jedi(note, the New Jedi order was just starting up and it's like 15 years after the OT) and they even accounted for Luke's force pull to his saber by positioning it in a way where he can't pull it or cut it free. So how does Luke escape? Well, he uses some battery packs of ammo which he levitates via the force(the cage he's in has bars but they aren't very big), floats to his saber and uses his saber to trigger an explosion which frees his saber and he can pull it and cut him free. This works because earlier, he's found out and he drops his blaster and when asked about his ammo packs, the pirates assume he won't be able to do anything with them. Now, I can see EFAP and members having issues with say the new Force powers within the old EU or even this setup possibly, but you can't tell me this entire thing I described is in the same league as this crap from the Acolyte?
One that clearly had a lot of thought put in and showcased how resourceful Luke was as a character vs flashy lightsaber moves with characters barely doing anything?

    Star Wars Legends
Cortosis ore was a very rare, brittle, fibrous material, the conductive properties of which would cause lightsabers to temporarily short out upon contact. This effect made cortosis a useful material for anti-lightsaber melee weapons, though with repeated strikes, a lightsaber could still cut through it. Cortosis, due to its energy resistant properties, was also resistant to blaster fire.
Cortosis ore was used extensively in shadowtrooper armor, as well as the C-B3 cortosis battle droids during the Clone Wars, and the Force-using group known as the Jensaarai. The cortosis used for this armor was smuggled out from Bespin's Cloud City. The walls of the Imperial Palace were also lined with cortosis ore. It was also used to strengthen starfighter and capital ship hulls, and was woven into body armor.
Cortosis was expensive to mine because it was so rare and it had to be absolutely refined. Pure, unrefined, cortosis ore was for unexplained reasons, energized, killing anyone who touched it with their bare skin, even Hutts, who had energy-resistant enzymes in their sweat. Miners had to have filtering equipment, or else the cortosis particles would accumulate in their systems, causing hair loss, sickness, and eventually death. The substance was energy-resistant, meaning energy tools (such as plasma torches) were virtually useless. The brute force of hydraulic jacks were used to mine it, though it quickly wore the head of the jack to uselessness and its dust would clog the pistons. Pockets of highly-combustible lethane gas often formed near cortosis deposits.

(Edit): I've seen a remarkable amount of conversation on other videos saying the moths were fine because Star Wars is goofy, the old stormtrooper head bonk argument therefore criticism invalidated argument in full force again. Besides which I think the criticism is not that the moths were used as a plot device after being set up in the previous episode but the manner in which there were used, that rather than being a desperate gamble during the low point they were instead a inefficient method of execution purely for plot armor reasons. Y'know what kinda show I'd like to see if competently written? A Star Wars show following a Sith protagonist, who is actually of the ancient Sith race, in an almost Cobra Kai style setup, he's a master of the dark side living in the modern world, Jedi are the majority faction and the Empire is long gone, saves a youth from Cartel gangsters, loan sharks, kidnappers etc.
Then have that sith go on a very personal journey where, like Cobra Kai, you see the positive influence that the Sith Code can bring in moderation, but when you delve deeper into the extremes then you risk falling to corruption and it'll be up to that protagonist to choose to indulge in the power and temptations, or choose to be better than the sith masters who've come before him.
Wishful thinking but hey, one can dream.

That makes no sense. The darkside corrupts. Just using it, he would become more and more corrupt. It's not about extremes. It's that you use anger and hate to use it.

@@debanydoombringer1385 More than that, even; it revels in it. It promotes passion and selfishness. As has been said before, there is no balance between light and dark in the Force; the lightside IS balance, by definition, and the dark side is always evil, by definition.

The "reveal" is somehow more disappointing than I expected. Oh, and the Force absorb ability Ryan brought up was called tutaminis in the EU; there's a great SWTOR trailer (I think it's called 'Hope') where Satele Shan performs it in a fight against Darth Malgus-it's the coolest use of the ability I've seen. Speaking of Ryan, his commentary on these videos is invaluable; his familiarity with the EU is much appreciated and adds a lot of interesting perspective and context.
I was also annoyed with the Padawan's inconsistent power level. First she's doing beginner drills for some reason, even though she should be long past that kind of training and we're given no indication that she's meant to be helping to teach the class-then she's suddenly holding her own against what's, presumably, a Sith Lord? All while a Jedi MASTER folds to a Sith apprentice in the first few minutes of this show? Give me a break. And the drills make no sense either! Sticks? We've already seen in ANH and in AOTC how beginner Jedi are trained-even small children can safely use the lightsabers because they're special ones specifically for that (they're smaller for a reason) and are not made to cause grievous injury. So it can be reasonably deduced that the youngling sabers are set to stun or simply not used to maim and kill, making the use of bo staves pointless.

These writers have no cleverness, so they write everyone dumb in order for things to happen.

Admittedly, even I was impressed by /some/ of this episode, like the triple tap kill, or Yorg using the discarded helmet to his fleeting advantage. Heck, my ol' nerdy self appreciated the chance to finally see cortosis get some live action love, but that discussion about Phrik brought me back to reality, reminding me how absolutely daft this franchise has become. Thanks a lot, Disney.

They actually explained why Saul did nothing... they said Smilo-Ren does not follow the rules of combat; those rules are indeed turn based combat. I go, then you, then him, then back to me. But Smilo-Ren cheated by allowing the jedi knight to go, then he went again, and Sol was confused - those seven seconds of inaction was because he was trying to figure out whose turn it was. It happens on tabletop RPGS all the time hmhmhm

I will admit, I like Smilo more than I thought I would. That is because the actor is actually really good. I didn't see that coming. It sucks he's stuck in a crappy show. I like edgelord characters like him and Edgy the Hedgy.

@rice.flakes Ya. That's why I'll give it a D instead of an F. He's a good actor that moves really well in the fight. He's also ripped af. It's funny going from his scenes to the "twins" scenes where the lead "actress " only has one face....blank with wide eyes

I don’t think Sol can be the “sole” survivor. If we go with them trying to copy other works, then the next thing to do would be to do the opposite of Revenge of the Sith:
Anakin being responsible for Padame’s death and falling to the dark side.
Reverse it. Mae getting her revenge on Sol, but being forgiven and allowed to roam free.

I honestly can't help but feel bad for Lee Jung-jae (the actor who plays Sol) because he is clearly trying to do the best with what he's given. I still don't understand why Ki-Adi Mundi's involvment in all of this matters, as the panel and other people have said Plo Koon being the one being active back then would make more sense because of how long lived his race is and he is one of the very few Jedi to use force lighting, so you could give him a draker undertone, not that they would do that because that would at least make some sense.
