Instead of Vault-Tec dropping the bombs themselves, I think it would’ve been more interesting to have them to conspire to increase hysteria about the impending nuclear apocalypse through the media. More fear means more vaults. This plan could have backfired by having the hysteria reach a fever pitch, eventually resulting in chaos or jingoistic rhetoric turning into action.
This actually would have been a better analogy criticizing capitalism, since it points out the self-destructive nature of an infinite growth mindset (in my mind). At least it’s a more intelligent analogy than “they’re bad because they’re corporations” lol

I'd like to make a suggestion to that good idea: The Chinese learn of Vault-tec's advertisements and believe that the Americans believe that nuclear war is imminent (they don't understand the separation between what the companies of the country believe and what the government of that country believes), so they escalate the conflict further with the US responding in kind. There, now everyone gets a slice of the satirism pie when everyone presumes the worst over an increased threat that no on bothered to confirm.

That’s fair, but I think the general point still stands. I don’t think it makes any sense for Vault-Tec to believe that the nuclear apocalypse would be beneficial to their bottom line. Money doesn’t mean anything when society doesn’t exist.
Also, I think them causing the nuclear war contradicts the point about Vault-Tec’s fiduciary responsibility. Fiduciary responsibility results in corporations being incentivized to maximize profits in the short term in order to boost investor profit. If Vault-Tec makes money by selling vaults, they have nothing to gain by causing the end of the world. You can’t build and sell vaults when the world is already over.
That’s why I think my idea makes a little more sense. Vault-Tec would be incentivized to increase the demand for vaults, and they would do that by fanning the flames of hysteria and suspicion in society. Since they are trying to maximize profits, it could be conceivable that they eventually end up overdoing it, causing the end of the world

@@pvt.gaminggummybear6337 But you're missing the point, It's not supposed to make sense. It's valt tec, they're an evil company with ideological delusions, that explains everything. We even see a shadowed figure seemingly send a message to Barb while overlooking the board meeting making sure that the pitch of "destroy the world so we can rule it all" is sold. I assume that shadowy figure is the ultimate owner of vault tec, maybe an Enclave guy, maybe Mr. House or the Master, something like that.
They're not trying to make money in the short term, you're just randomly adding your own ideas of real world corporations. This is a story, wherein an evil ideological company, makes a pact with other evil companies but who only really care about profits, to change the world in such a way that they will essentially rule everything. The board meeting even starts with the other companies pointing out that vault tec is struggling financially and is hardly a business competitor to them i.e. vault tec doesn't care about money, they already built all their vaults without special funding deals. Vault tec's idea of "investment" is getting more people on board, more people into the vaults, more ideas for vault experiments.
It is only a board meeting, CEOs regularly lie to secure investment, vault tec is the definition of this, believing their own lies half the time too.
They do need money to build their vaults, the vaults that will carry out their ideals of world recreation, this is the sales pitch to secure the pact with other companies, but Bud never talks about money, he talks about managerialism and time efficiency, mainly in the context of "beating the reds", never is it said to be about money, you're just adding that to the script yourself. It's an on-screen representation of the meme, "How can we make more money? "Money? Why would we want more money?" The joke that unbridled pure capitalism is actually still less destructive and disturbing that ideologues.
You're idea doesn't disagree with the idea that vault tec just pulled strings to cause the war, rather than literally dropping nukes themselves. Only issue being that vault tec explicitly wants the apocalypse to happen. This isn't just a new thing with the tv show, vault tec was always a super-governmental, likely Enclave adjacent, plot to, if not destroy and recreate the world, to directly take advantage of the likely apocalypse if it happens, Barb even says "we should hedge out bets". This has always been the lore of Fallout.

In Lonesome Road, the Courier talks to a character named Ulysses. He talks a lot about the NCR (the Bear) and Caesar’s Legion (The Bull). He talks about their conflict and how it’ll shape the Mojave, but also tells you the player character about the place you’re in, The Divide. Throughout the DLC, you find out that you unintentionally destroyed a civilization there by delivering a device that triggered the nukes buried underground in the silos there. It ruined the town and caused all kinds of monsters to live there. Ulysses sees you as a harbinger of terrible fate, and thinks you might do the same to the Mojave. As you go along Lonesome Road, you see the ruins of this town and understand what Ulysses’s saw in it and why he hates you for it. At the end of the DLC, Ulysses threatens to launch nukes at the NCR’s essential trade route and a Legion settlement. However, if you can convince him that your time in the Divide showed you that you have the conviction to make a choice over who leads to Mojave, instead of being a mindless drone, Ulysses helps you disable the nukes, keeping them safe. In the ending slideshow of the DLC, Ulysses himself knows that war never changes, but he adds something to the end, that people can change by the roads they walk, and that they have to to secure a better future. The TV show shits on all of that by showing us this universe will never change, and that Bethesda want to keep it in limbo forever

Oh, another fun fact: the BoS member Max sees right after the nuke goes off at Shady Sands? That's the EAST COAST BROTHERHOOD logo on his chest armor. The East BoS is the only chapter of the entire BoS which puts the largest gear to the RIGHT of the sword - all others, including West Coast, put it on the LEFT.
Why does that matter? Because whether the nuke went off in 2277 or 2281, the East Coast BoS was still stuck in DC fighting Super Mutants. Maxson had not yet risen to command it and would not for years after. They had no ability to go back West, and did not have the Prydwen yet.
But per Todd Howard, in order to resolve the "2277 nuke problem", the nuke happened right after the events of New Vegas - in 2281.

The Holy GECK from Fallout 2 could cleanse the wasteland and rejuvenate the soil for planting crops. Thanks to its micro fusion technology. It also came with a pen light. Vault 8, and eventually Vault 13, used their GECK to establish their city. They ran into the problem of needing electrical power to expand. Also, there was radiation leaking into the ground water. You go to Gecko to find a power plant still in operation by Ghouls. You had the choice of destroying it or fixing it. By fixing it. Vault City would be able to expand and turn into a regional power. This would help in negotiating with NCR and keep the Mob bosses running New Reno at bay.
The control Vaults are working as designed. Who would have thought otherwise? But Bethesda and Amazon would just nuke it out of existence. Because they want a Mad Max setting. Forgetting that there were settlements and towns with functioning economies, government, courts, and police forces. It was out in the wasteland and on the roads where you ran into motorized gangs. Which were led by brutal men like Toe Cutter and Lord Humongous.

I originally posted this under an EFAP highlight, but I feel like it needs to be said here
Regarding the lore and Shady Sands, one thing everyone misses in this conversation is that the NCR is basically Fallout’s equivalent to the New Republic in Star Wars, except a lot worse. The New Republic is Luke, Han and Leia’s legacy, and Star Wars fans were understandably pissed when everything they accomplished was undone in TFA in a single scene. The same is true in Fallout except YOU are Luke, the NCR was founded at the end of Fallout 1 as a direct result of the Player’s actions, but unlike the New Republic which doesn’t get elaborated on or explored we see the NCR grow, in Fallout 2 Shady Sands has a statue of the first game’s player character right in the center of the city and the Republic has a confirmed population of 700k, new buildings are going up, pre-war cars are being repaired, and new roads are being paved. By New Vegas they’ve annexed more cities and have had another 40 years of growth, it’s safe to say the NCR has a total of 1million citizens by that point, it’s existed for 100 years and has the following settlements under its control: Shady Sands itself, Boneyard which is home to the Followers of the Apocalypse University, Junktown and The Hub which are the two other founding members, Necropolis and Dayglow which are two entire Ghoul cities, Vault City and Arroyo which are GECK paradises, as well as Gecko, San Fran, San Diego, Redding, and New Reno
And then this damn show comes in, it plops Shady Sands where Boneyard should be, off-screens it, acts like the several other cities within the NCR don’t even exist, and writes off the entire NCR as “it didn’t work out.” Even just the idea that Shady Sands itself only had 35k residents is laughable, but what this show does is a slap in the face to the fans.

People keep misunderstanding Lee Moldaver. MauLer too apparently . Look It's implied that Rose became Moldavers significant other.
And while she may want to save humanity as a whole, that doesn't mean she's above personal revenge. Wanting to save humanity, and wanting personal revenge; often go hand in hand in story telling.
And considering her oldest enemy is Vault Tech, and that Hank is also Vault Tech; it makes perfect sense, from her perspective at least; to get revenge on both Vault Tech and Hank at the same time.
And the best way to do that, is to have her men slaughter Vault Techs carefully cultivated populace; right in front of them.
And you've got to remember that Moldaver is used to the wasteland by now, especially after Shady Sands and Rose.
Which means that at this point, she probably doesn't really care if Lucy and her brother end up dying; blinded by vengeance as she is, because they're also *Hanks* kids.
And seeing Hank suffer, while also getting that code from him; is her ultimate goal during that attack.
Hypocrisy is like violence, if you only let your enemies use it; they win. - Lee Moldaver

Diminishing NCR influence is what Chris Avellone, main writer behind Fallout 2 and Fallout New Vegas, wanted to do. He was thinking about "random" nuke, yet decided to against it. Still, same could've been accomplished through more natural scenarios, like NCR falling into civil war short after F:NV, due to exceedingly high taxation during and after battles with Legion. You know, that same way American revolution happened.
Personally, I think NCR is a perfect example of what original Fallout series was all about - human ability to persevere any disaster and bounce back even stronger. In a way, Fallout 2 was one of a few post-post-Apocalypse game, with more focus on rebuilding of civilization, then destruction of nuclear war.
And then Bethesda came with their hack of a writers, to whom post-apocalypse city is built out of garbage, nobody can clean up even simple rubble, farming is impossible and nearby shops were not looted throughout 200 years that passed since the war. Oh, and Paladins vs Orks, how can I forget about freaking BoS and Mutants that are everywhere.

@@ryanhall5360 That makes no sense. If cold fusion tech exists on the scale that we see in the Fallout universe, (Fusion Cores, or the even more common Fusion Cells,) then it stands to reason that there is or was some common method to produce such tech. Given the amount of technological reclamation we see the NCR engage in throughout the series, as well as the fact that the Van Graffs managed to create a successful industry out of selling energy weapons in bulk, it is safe to assume that the knowledge of how to, (in your own words,) use, maintain, and replicate cold fusion tech is very much still present in the post-war world. Hell, the Brotherhood basically wouldn't be able to function without such capabilities. And before you say it, no, cold fusion doesn't have to be 'cold' in the typical sense of the word, that's a misnomer. To be 'cold' fusion, the reaction has to be sustainable at room temperatures.

My take on the whole Fallout world in general was always that all this stuff; the vaults, the bombs dropping, the mutants etc., were all just knock-on effects of smart guys trying to do a good thing but running off to a logical extreme and having a bad outcome by accident. Classic "they could, but didn't stop to ask if they _should"_ hubris of man type of story where you're the grandkid who inherited the _fallout_ of your forebears' mistakes.
The second the story becomes "they were just evil on purpose and _everything_ happened _exactly_ according to some big bad's grand design; it's not just infinitely more boring, but it's almost antithetical to whole value a story like this could offer.
After that big reveal in the show, it felt to me like something of an anti-story.
Nothing is what it says it is. Nothing matters. Everything's just the fault of whomever we decide it's the fault of, regardless of how implausible or unsubstantiated.
      Man fuck this show.

They also show the place to be made from ruined pre-war structures, yet in game it's established the settlement was built post-war by the people of Vault 15. Funny how the MacMuffin of the show is cold fusion technology Vault-Tec was supposedly hoarding to the point of it requiring an administrator password to use. Since Todd has declared the show canon, here's a little choice quote from a terminal in F76, the most recent game:
_"The G.E.C.K. includes a _*_cold-fusion power generator rated to last at least 1000 years,_*_ matter-energy replicators, water purifiers, atmospheric chemical stabilizers, and seed and soil supplemements. Even in the event of total global annihilation, a properly functioning G.E.C.K. will create an earthly paradise."_
So alright, Vault-Tec is actually using their cold fusion tech rather than sitting on it like Moldaver claims. Plus, the NCR has access to those generators, on account of no less than three of their settlements having canonically used a G.E.C.K., those being Shady Sands, Vault City and Arroyo.
Oh, and just as a little aside, CF certainly wasn't infinite energy if Vault City wanted to take Gecko power plant in FO2, and the NCR fought tooth and nail for access to the Hoover Damn in New Vegas for the electricity it could provide.

    • @johankarlsson1776
      @johankarlsson1776 8 месяцев назад +40

Yes. But considering that in the show they supposedly "own half of everything" why would they even be all that invested in the vaults and the continuation of the war anyway? Sounds like they'd keep making tons of profits either way 🤷‍♀️ why would they see profit in destroying most of their own enterprise?

    • @GideonRavenor712
      @GideonRavenor712 8 месяцев назад

@@johankarlsson1776 That is effectively what the conclusion was in the lore PRIOR to this show.
In 2077, while the Great War would begin in October of that year, Vault-Tec had already come up with its 2078 plans for the company's intended direction. They had discovered from the outrageous success of one of their more R&D oriented Vaults, that there was ENORMOUS profit to be made by simply pumping all of the defense contract money into R&D, as all new inventions or innovations made would all be Vault-Tec property and products, which could then be used not only to further outfit the Vaults themselves, but to sell on the open market for pure profit.
In essence, they were making more money from producing technology and stuff AROUND the Vaults than actually making Vaults themselves, and they intended to base their future profits off of that, going forward if war did not occur. But the nukes fell in that year.
Absolutely Vault-Tec has a vested interest in keeping the threat of a potential Nuclear War or global disaster going, because otherwise their defense contracts run out, but an actual war destroys them as a company no different than if that hysteria vanishes.

    • @GideonRavenor712
      @GideonRavenor712 8 месяцев назад +25

Exactly, which is entirely what their business model became, in-lore before this show. Specifically, transitioning the company to a more R&D focus because the profit there was huge.
Now, one could argue that there is a difference between Vault-Tec's public face, and their Enclave-controlled backroom, but The Enclave merely anticipated the war eventually heating up and prepped accordingly, they themselves didn't start it either. Nor did most who worked for Vault-Tec knew about the connection either.
In terms of Vault-Tec as a company, as far as 99% of its employees knew, its ideal situation is that the hysteria continues, but no nukes actually fly, and while that 1% may have known the nukes would eventually fly they didn't want to see it happen immediately, nor knew exactly when because they had no direct power over the situation.

[32:50] I think Mauler says "Maximus decides to go on a 'T A R D rage' and save Lucy..." but the auto-caption says "Todd rage", and you know what, it just works.
Some other things I'm too lazy to find timestamps for:
How does Maximus move the armor and get dead Titus out? The yaogui bats the armor over, and you see how heavy it falls to the ground. He dies in the armor, sitting back against a boulder, blocking the release handle. Yet Max somehow moves it, presumably standing it up, to remove dead Titus and get in.
Also, doesn't old BOS guy comment on how Max is wearing Knight rank red jumpsuit? So Max stole Titus' clothes too, and they happened to fit perfectly? What possible injury did Titus have, other than minor laceration on face? Couldn't have been crushed, the steel wasn't deformed; just a couple superficial scratches from the yaogui.
Where did BOS get the keyed fusion cores, other cores don't have key slots. Lucy frees Max from immobile armor, yet he somehow moves the armor several feet off the platform, farther than it would have fallen even if he was able to push it over from its immobile standing position, again how? But in Filly he needed a winch to hoist it up. Then how does Hank also move the armor, extract dead headless guy, then get in silently and in a matter of seconds apparently, while Lucy is standing a few feet away, and looking in that direction?
Max's repeated flashback scene - how does he survive the nuclear blast in a fridge, that has a LARGE VISIBLE OPENING in the back? It looks to be a fan grill that's completely open to the outside. So wouldn't he have received a lethal does of radiation at least? And they show this multiple times lol.
The girl is staring in the direction of the first blast, wouldn't she blinded instantly? Wouldn't cowboy guy probably be blinded from one of other bombs after?
Hanks awkward speech about hope, very weird the writers basically repeated the same line twice about hope (like an NPC). How did they miss the corporate Vault Tec sloganeering, ending the speech with something like "Here's to being prepared for the future!". Kyle deserved better.
New Vegas actually looks kinda close to how it literally looks ingame in NV from a distance, which is a small caricature in old creation engine. How it SHOULD have looked, was that old NV CG trailer, where it's much bigger than in game, and all lit up on the horizon, like how you're supposed to IMAGINE it looks like while playing NV. Here it looked utterly abandoned and destroyed. Another miss. Like "oh yeah we remember you NV fans - fuck you all too!".
Filly is basically just Diamond City, complete with the same reactor center. I like references and homages, but the show kinda felt a bit lazy asset flippy overall.
I got the same vibe from this show, as the Halo S1 - made by NOT fans, for NOT fans, and actually just FUCK THE FANS, we're body-snatching this IP and wearing its saggy skin suit, and you'll eat it up and like it, cause this is the trash we're feeding you. Well much like Disney SW, FUCK THEIR SHIT CANON, it's not canon for me.

Your points about moving the power armor are valid; yet this is minor continuity nitpicking. The show isn't perfect.
The bear tore into Titus's back and sides while he was on the ground; that is what killed him.
We don't know he actually survived the blast in the fridge; merely that he was found in a fridge afterwards. We don't know how long he was in that fridge. Why would a knight be walking around where a nuke just went off?
I assume she's far enough away from the nuke yet this is another one of those minor nitpicks. Yet nukes in Fallout behave very inconsistently; as does radiation. Not that this isn't a flaw, it's just a flaw common to the franchise.
Yes, a person in a stressful situation is not the most eloquent after weeks of being kept in a cage.
I don't care how you think New Vegas should have looked.
I don't care about your personal opinion of Filly.
Yes; I'm sure with your preconceived notions and hostile attitude you perceived a lot of insults and bad faith in the show. Yet that's not coming from the show.

@@grimjoker5572 If you don't care, why are you spending so much time thinking about it and responding??? lol. I watched the show before any spoilers or commentary 2 weeks ago. I only just found this, and it's 100% accurate. The Yao guai tore into his back and sides? I guess I was supposed to use my imagination then, don't remember any visible damage to sides and back in any scene there or after. So the kid survived the nuke exposed, not in the Indy fridge, but then lives inside the fridge after for fun? Hank's speech was in the FIRST episode...BEFORE the cage. Did you even watch the show? I'm probably just arguing with a Bethesbot.
Strip out all the Fallout imagery and references, make it "new IP post-apoc show", and people wouldn't be praising it. They be saying it's mediocre, and it probably would be cancelled after S1.
