Over and unders are cool ,but there is just something majestic about a side by side Big Bore Double Rifle. I purchased me a double rifle for a little under $1,000. It is Remington name stamped ,but made by Baikal side by side chambered in 45-70. People leave very bad reviews on this double rifle ,but I've noticed the ones who actually bought or own one always talk about how wonderful the rifle is and how great it performs. Those who never owned one just hates on it because it is a Baikal. In all honesty for the price I paid for it, it is a wonderful rifle. It is fairly accurate and rugged even though some say it isn't the prettiest rifle in the safe. Although I do think it is a beautiful firearm. I'm hoping one day I can get it rechambered into a 45-90 or 45-120.

I purchased my first Chapuis double rifle in 1988 in 9.3 x 74R, and I bought a second Chapuis double in 2012 chambered in .470 Nitro Express. Both rifles will touch bullets at 50 yards (45 meters), and are utterly reliable as well as being beautiful. Though I am far from being an expert when it comes to double rifles, for my money you cannot beat a Chapuis for accuracy, workmanship, and elegance. You can spend a lot more money, but I don't believe you can get a better rifle. The .470, loaded with 500-grain Woodleigh solids on top of 103 grains of IMR 4831 powder and a Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primer gives me 2,148 feet per second, just as the original load did more than a century ago. That rifle is going to Namibia in two months to take an elephant.
An elephant? Any reason why?
Because it is legal in various African nations. Because the hunter wants to do it. Because the natives get all the meat to eat when an elephant is killed. And the elephant is not an endangered animal as the liberals state. African countries know how many elephants can be harvested each year without endangering the population. Nothing is wrong with killing a cape buffalo and the natives eat it so why is it wrong to kill an elephant and the natives eat it? If you eat any meat at all it was once a live animal which was killed so it could be eaten.

I just purchased a Browning O/U in 9.3x74R after wanting a medium double rifle for years. It's a converted Browning 325 by Decominck Ferres Warneton Belgique showing excellent design and workmanship. And Belgium proofs in addition to the Browning proofs. It was closer to my price range than anything except the Valmet. I have ammunition on it's way and am looking forward to shooting it from my Lead Sled rest. I have the .375 H&H in Ruger no1 and a CZ 550 safari but wanted a medium double. Heavier than needed in the upper midwest it's about filling a spot in the collection. I'm hoping to use reduced loads similar to the .375 H&H light loads.

I also purchased a Chapuis Ugex sxs double rifle in 9.3x74R after looking at many options on the market.I'm very happy with my choice and the Sambar deer here in the Victorian highcountry of Australia are very nervous. After buying my Chapuis Ugex double rifle and Chapuis 12g U/O some 10 years ago,I can honestly say that I’m very happy with them both.And yes the Turkish walnut stocks glisten like “honey” in the sun light.Cheers.

Several good makers in France, amomgst them isChapuis, Verney Carron ,,and ammo designer like Messner with his Messner Mag and the .375 VC developed for VC .
if you have a passion about your weapons this is a good place to start.....this is style for the family man.....its hard to make the blood sports to be glamorous but this is a step in that direction
Hi,off the shelf or on order in Victoria at Victorian Arms a similar Chapuis to mine costs around $8,500 to $9,000 plus $700 for Rechnagel/Chapuis QD 30mm mounts plus what ever scope you may choose.I imported mine through a reputable dealer in the US and saved around $2,000. Calibre choice is up to you.Depending on your budget you can look at a Baikel in 30-06 or 45-70 for $1,200 ish open sights, which will do the job.I love hunting with a double rifle.Thanks for your interest.Cheers.
That's awesome! The rifle seems rather affordable. I purchased me a Baikal in 45-70. I could never afford a true custom double rifle as of right now especially due to the pandemic so I settled with the Baikal and as much as people really give it a bad name, I rather think the rifle is wonderful, especially for the price. I'm hoping I can get a rechambered into a 45-90 or 45- 120. Soon I will be able to afford me a custom doubled rifle chambered in a Nitro Express. I would love to have a .577 or .600 and if I can afford it I will get the .700. I do have a Ruger Number 1 chambered in 450-400 Nitro Express. Just to give me the "illusion" that I am on a majestic safari hunting elephant or cape buffalo. Lol!
Those are minor works of art which just so happen to also be tools with which game is humanely harvested.
G'day, the 470 NE would be similar to the 460.Yes they are heavier and more expensive.The 9.3x74R is well suited for larger game Aussie hunting.Good luck.
How would a 470 be similar to the 460? The 460 generates way over 7000 ft pounds of muzzle energy

Wow that is very reasonable price ,the chapius make good looking shottys as well.Thank you so much for this info Sir double rifle's are awsome and I think they are making a come back i can't wait to get my hands on one the cal size is a very difficult choice for me as the biggest one I have fired is a 270 and 270 wsm and they have a sharp recoil and I hear others say that the bigger cal's are not to bad cause have a slow push and not a jab so hard to decide (. thanks again mate.
9,3x74R is an excellent cartridge for wild boar but if you want to go to Africa and hunt Cape Buffalo or Hippo, I would strongly recommend a .577 Nitro Express made by Heym or Krieghoff. With that caliber you can allow the beast to come up to 10-15 yards before you give him the first and final blow. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, beats the thrill of dropping a Buffalo or a Hippo right at your feet....

Awful lot of CNC machines for a hand made gun!
That is why they are cheap entry level rifles. There is nothing like an English double for a reason. Comparing these to an H&H or even Rigby for that matter, would be like comparing sandstone to a diamond.

@@zajagter2888 I can have a new, machine made, hand engraved Chapuis in hand for 12,900 USD. A similar English Double is more than 80,000 USD on the secondary market. This is one of those things that comes down to manufacturing man-hours and brand recognition. The Chapuis is far more affordable (cheaper) for an individual who wants a double rifle. Nothing against them, it just is what it is. I am sure Chapuis makes a fine modern rifle in it's own right.
@@nickgerwig8478 Totally agree. Sabatti also make double rifles catering for those who don't have the salaries to buy a H&H, Rigby or Purdey double rifle for DG. For myself, my dream double is a .470 or .500 made in the inter-war period, with rising doll's head bite, barred safety, caterpillar foresight, with either a drop lock or box lock action and a little engraving but not too much!! To me, that'd be the epitome of DG hunting rifles - commanding respect wherever it'd go!!! But in Zimbabwe I did use a Krupp 404 Jeff (octagonal 26" barrel, with silvered leaf sights to 400yds, hooded foresight) that had a serial number of number "7"!!!!! The 7th rifle off their production line!! Now THAT was a superb rifle too!!! Today's Krupp factory have since offered tens of thousands of dollars to buy it back for their museum!! But the PH/Guide says he's still using it - and that's how it should ever be. Amen!!
Why would anyone buy anything made in France let alone a weapon!
Because it is cheaper then Holland and Holland and Purdeys etc etc English made guns but Quality is the same..
@@jl8543 Sorry, but I disagree. The quality of a hand-made double, like H&H or a Purdey is most definitely NOT the same!!
Why buy a French firearm? Simply because the French are stalwarts for tradition: they make their weapons light enough to hold above their heads when surrendering!!! (Which they've done with regularity - if history is anything to go by!!) LOL!!
Rick Higson: I think you should check on facts before you comment, Holland & Holland is French! It is owned by Channel. And most of the staff are French.
