Looks like yet another pinned post is needed ^^. To all you hardcore oldskool riders and people who are afraid of change in life: I tried RKP truck to see if they are fun on a board like that. Turns out they are! I did end up swapping them for Indy 169s after a while - are you happy now?
Just a tip for installing rails. If you put scotch outdoor mounting tape between your rail and deck, it will help the rails stay in place and also not loosen and rattle over time.
David Seale thanks for the tip - haven’t heard of this one before! I’ll give it a try on my next setup. I ride rails on most of my street setups as well!

I lived and breathed skateboarding back in the mid 1980's. I got my first Powell Peralta in 1985. Wish I still had it! I skated almost every day until December of 1989 where I had a bad skateboarding accident and wrecked my ankle completely. Now at 45 years old (46 September 1st), I want to get back on the board but just to cruise-no tricks at all. Hopefully there is a good selection out there. The Cab deck looks pretty sick though! Thanks for posting!
Jamey Collins That’s a great story! Doesn’t matter if you can’t do tricks anymore - as long as you ride ;) There is a huge selection nowadays, cruisers, old school boards, longboards of any size and shape! I’m sure you’ll find just the right thing!
Similarly, I just turned 45 April 7, and bought myself some skateboards, built /2 cruisers (roskopp face, a 1991 shape Natas) and a street/park board (Andy Anderson 8.45). I also wrecked my ankle in 1995. Toes were facing 180* after nollying a parking island. Back foot came off and stayed in place as my body and the board rolled away.

I got an old school 89 shape landyatchz nightfox atvX with bullet longboard trucks, angled riser pads, powell nose gard and 63mm hawgs I swear it's been my favorite set up. The old school skaters like my self nore the youngsters understand how good it feels to to mix longboard and cruiser set up. I like your vids brother you gain a new subscriber.
Appreciate the nice words and absolutely agree - mixing styles and parts of different boards can create such fun setups! I learned a lot regarding trucks, bushings and wheels from longboards / cruisers that I never would have experienced if I only skated regular skateboards!
Nice setup, love the Stevie Cab deck, such a classic. I remember going to see a Bones Brigade demo when I was a kid, still a vivid memory 30 years later. I recently got back into skating with my young son and bought a landyachtz board with the same wheels as you. I love it for cruising around, the occasional manual, powerslide and ollie but nothing more than that :) Maybe I'll get a Powell reissue next, or an SC Roskopp that I always wanted as a kid...
Gez Fry Man...what I would give to have been able to see the Bones Brigade live! If you check my latest video you’ll see that I built a Landyachtz Dinghy myself with a little different spec - what an amazing cruiser. Absolutely agree, great for mannys, a few ollies and powersildes and just getting around on a small and fun board!
For about 2 weeks I've been trying to figure out a cruiser complete set up i want, this just helped me a lot lol especially with wheels bearings
Killer setup 🤙🤘.. you took me back to when I first started riding with the caballero, tail and rib bones. I recently got back into riding (cruising) to keep up with my kids on the bike trails. I have an old LIB tech board that was collecting dust with some independents 1/8 risers. Slapped some OJ super juice 60mm 78a. Rides so smooth.. thanks for sharing 🤙😎
That's a pretty good idea. You basically made a mini cruiser out of an old school deck. You can easily swap out the trucks and wheels for normal ones (like 169s and some rat/G bones), and skate it as a normal board too. Nice.

Could you do ollie / kick flip on a board like this? Since there is no bend in the front I guess u could only do transitions on a bowl/half pipe?
@@PinkPablomy dad bought a cab reissue like 5-6 years ago but it was the other dragon graphic and I skated it and could Ollie and kickflip it easy, but I remember it having a little bit of a nose, I don't remember it being flat , but if it was flat then I didn't notice it or it didn't effect me

Yea they should keep making them, now you have to buy them off eBay for like 80 bucks a pop. I was lucky and got one for 30 bucks.

Yume Winston it’s been a while since I build this, but when I was riding the board as I set it up there - it was a lot of fun to ride. Kind of like a really wide, short wheelbase Dinghy. Great for cruising, not super great for tricks. Ollies up and down curbs worked fine though!

Daniel Hawryschuk Thanks man! I usually have my go-to brands that I had good experiences with. First time using those Zealous bearings though. I’ve since then used them in a few other boards (downhill and freeride) and they still hold up perfectly. I only cleaned and greased them once - super silent as well!

I set my trucks back to the curve of the deck. About 3/4'' to prevent tail kick at higher speeds. Enjoy

I still have my OG cab deck from back in 86 and it's in really great condition because I didn't skate it much back then. I mostly skated Alva's in the 80s. I do have 4 cab reissues also and the propeller anniversary deck that they only made 500 of.
Update: Thanks to crappy weather and a broken ankle, it took me until now to ride the board. Even though the wheelbase is quite short (16” from wheel center to wheel center due to reverse kingpin trucks) the board feels amazing. Super smooth cruising and stable ride feel because of the 10” wide trucks and soft 63mm wheels. Can only recommend this kind of setup as a cruiser + the short wheelbase makes it fun and turn quickly!

Surprisingly no, thanks to the 1/2” risers. It rides super squirky if that’s a term^^. Like a Mini cruiser with soft wheels and a deep offset lip. Definitely not built for speed but super fun nonetheless! Whenever I feel like it I might change to 169 Indy trucks and some Rat Bones or G Bones to see what happens.
Maybe Ill try with some Indy or Thunder and big risers to use 63mm.
Ill do 15minutes to commute to the train station.
I tried longboarding but it is not as fun as skateboarding!

16 inches is short? i ride 14 inches! (i like putting one foot on the nose and the other on the tail while cruising)
How do the RPK trucks work with the short wheelbase?
The grip cut out looks great. Did you use a bowl or plate or similar round object to use as a template? You should do a tutorial just on that.
Thanks! It was quite simple, I think I used an old round cutting board but any plate or bowl will do the trick. Just hold it over the graphic you want to cut out to make sure it has the right curvature and then mark the cutout with a sharpie on the backside of your griptape. Just make sure you're centered. I cut it out with a good pair of scissors as I find cutting in precise lines with a carpenter knife a bit difficult on griptape. Hope this helps.

It’s been a while... I’m not 100% sure but it should be around 275 euros so around 300 usd. You can surely build it cheaper, but small parts like risers, other bushings, rails etc sum up quickly.
Great looking setup, different with those trucks.
Future refence, turn the allen key side not the nut side. Saves you scratching the painted base plate when the nut spins.
Thanks! I always only turn the nuts, as allen / phillips heads are easier to strip than nuts. Also, when turning the screw instead of the nut, the grip tends to twist under it. That happens with both button head and countersunk hardware. You can also apply torque easier on a nut than a much smaller allen key or phillips head.
I do this not only on skateboards but basically everywhere I can if I have the space for the tool. When you turn the nut, you are working against friction of the threads and the surface between nut and baseplate. When turning the screw you have the friction between the head and grip (already more friction), between the threads and between the shaft and walls o the hole.
… and for the scratching you’re right of course - but that’s a hit I can take!
Agreed it does bind the grip, however this can be fixed by using a countersunk drill bit. You should be able to pick one up for a few bucks at your local hardware. Also avoid power, screw in by hand less chance of stripping.

I recently dug out my 1987 (or so) P&P Lance Mountain Tribal deck and put a Waterbourne surf adaptor on. The old school deck shape isn't all that different from a surf skate. The idea of being able to pump uphill appealed to me, though it can be exhausting. I didn't know the old school truck bolt pattern changed, so I sill have the old original indy truck on the back.
That sounds like a fun setup. Super sick that you still have old Indys!!

Im setting up a Tony Hawk reissue soon for cruising and bowls. How do you like the Tail Bone? I cant decide if I should get one. I want the deck to last as long as possible but also won't want to diminish the performance too much. What are your thoughts? Thanks.
Well, it will make the tail of the deck last much longer for sure. How it impacts performance depends a lot on if you pop your board for tricks a lot. I think this matters more for flat tricks than in bowls / on transition. In those you scoop more and bonk off the coping imo. Hope this helps!
I had the same question and I would at least like to do some Ollie’s and kick flips while cruising, so a tail bone wouldn’t work for me.

Half inch risers was smart, but I would have put some G-Bones on that, not 78a hardness wheels. It’s not a “cruiser board”, it’s a fishtail.
Max Stirner I know the more period correct setup would have been with G-bones or Rat-bones and probably Indys or Gullwings. I wanted to try something different this time!
G-BONES are hard at 97a, I prefer the Powell Bombers at 85a ! And they're still not even as fast or smooth on shitty streets! I live right near the Dallas cowboys stadium and its a 3rd world country here!

Soft wheels for a bumpy street makes sense, I have some 88a Kryptonics Slammers, and they’re really smooth and quiet.
If youre gonna be riding off curbs and such you might wanna get some indies, those inverted trucks get the kingpins hung up on everythinggg

I wrote somewhere in the comments a bit longer how it rides on both the RKP trucks and on Indys. Long story short - they were both hella fun. Especially bc of the short wheelbase on the RKPs. On Indys they felt good, but that was a more common set up anyway.

Not what I'd do by screwing rib bones in , you can get fittings where u drill the holes so the ribs attach similar to the way the trucks fit

My cruiser is a original-stock dye-blue Iron Gate, Tommy Guerrero with 55mm black OJ super soft 76a juice wheels.

I’m trying to build a cruiser set up but the trucks I bought for my cab deck have the wrong bolt pattern, what trucks fit??
James Drabble These old decks or re-issues of them have the “old” hole pattern. Independent 159, 169 and 215 have this pattern (the modern Stage 11 actually have holes for old and new pattern) and I’m sure also other brands like Gullwing. Look up “skateboard trucks with old hole pattern”, you’ll find some for sure!
Simple fix brother! Set the trucks over the back holes, then mark where the front holes are with a marker. Then drill new holes! Done 👌
I have one that looks just like this but really beat up lol. I traded a guy a set of purple wheels for his subaru. The latest year I can find painted on it is 1985

Nice vid! I'm considering to restore my late 80' Freesport (chinese) skateboard and still stuck considering the choice about truck. TKP or RKP? I've seen you bought RKP, then came back to TKP. How could you describe the difference in terms of feeling between those two trucks with this kind of old school board, and why have you chosen to stay with those TKP?
Sounds like a cool project! Well it depends on what you’re looking for and the use of the board. I tried RKPs first just for the fun of it and for a cruiser they actually felt cool and different. For more “normal” feel and being able to actually skate bowls / ramps and do some tricks, TKPs will always be the go to for me, that’s why I made the switch.
If you check any of my other big noard videos (Winkowski setup or the Heroin setup) you’ll see that I ride either 159/169 or ACE AF1 66 to actually skate. I hope this helps a bit and good luck with the restoration project 💪🏻

theonewiththename depends on what brand of trucks and how loose you ride them, as well as the baseplate angle. No real answer here - sorry! I guess narrow loose regular trucks turn slightly tighter, but it really depends...

Nice, love that deck! I am riding an earthwing miniglider with indie 159 hollows and EZ hawgs. How did the 180mm trucks work out once you rode the board more?
Rode it on those trucks for a couple months and it was fun for sure. Different than TKPs but still really nimble. Changed to 169s after a while and of course those felt great too!!

Can you grind on longboard trucks like a normal skateboard trucks?
Yijun Tey It’s possible, but I haven’t tried as I used this one as a cruiser. For doing tricks and grinds etc, you’d be better off with standard kingpin trucks though.
Did you find the RKP trucks to be a bit more stable at higher speeds? I’m currently riding a standard board and can barely make it through my neighborhood without some bad speed wobbles. I want to get something to just cruise but I want to try and avoid a longboard if possible
Tyler Blake If I were you, I’d try to tighten the trucks first and if needed, replace the bushings with harder ones (Independent trucks offers a range of durometer harness bushings). That and building up muscle to balance are super important. If you are an avid skater and still get speed wobbles, try as said the bushing swap. Short wheelbase boards and tkp trucks are not made for super fast speeds in general, but your basic cruising and hills up to ~ 30km/h should still be possible.

Hey Marco will my 140mm bullet trucks with 65mm road rider wheels fit well on a shaped ten inch board like yours? I want a deck like that but I think my trucks may be too short, but it might not matter since my wheels are so big? I'm not sure.
rich 140mm are probably too narrow for a 10” wide deck. If I’m not wrong, 140s should be about 8” wide. You’ll ride more comfortably and stable with 169 Indys or any other truck for 9”-10” boards. Size of the wheels plays a little role in the whole setups width, if for example the wheels are offset to make it wider. However, you’ll probably need riser pads to avoid wheelbite at that size. It all comes down to the purpose of the board and what you intend to do with it. Hope this helps!
What drill bit did you use for the tailbone? Was it the 7/32" as the package directed?
If I had a 7/32” bit, I’d have used that. But since I live in Europe - we don’t really use imperial sizes. If I recall correctly, I used a 3mm bit, but might also have been a 4mm. Close enough, as it basically just has to allow the screw to pass through. The screw grabs inside the plastic of the tail bone, not the deck. If you can, countersink the holes in the deck a bit so the screws sit flush.
@@MarcoEckhardt Ah ok thank you! I'm just skeptical using the 7/32" bit because it's a bit larger than the machine screws so I was worried about a loose fit.

how would this setup do for bowls/grinds? the grabs would be super tight but could you 50/50 grind?

Cruising pools, for sure. But actually going at it and doing grinds and airs, possible I guess but at least for me this setup felt really snappy and not too stable at a fast pace.
I've never watched a skateboard building video before, but as you said for the trucks, there's a first time for everything 🤓 We need to make videos together at some point!

Rad Planet very possible. These used to be what skateboards were basically.. just today i ollied, fakie bigspinned, 180'd, and in fact KICKFLIPPED on one of these
a 16" wheelbase with a flat 4" nose = 20" of ollie room.
a 14" wheelbase with an upturned 6" nose = about 15.5" of ollie room.
its EASIER!

Im about to set up a 9.75 inch old skool deck with reverse king pin trucks hoping it works well
It’s definitely a ton of fun. Maybe not the besf for going really fast, but for sure a cool alternative to tkp trucks. I liked it because it was carvy and really agile, while not feeling instable. The shorter wheelbase due to the RKP geometry causes most of that feel. If you want to - nothing stops you trying it out. Also maybe consider playing around with different bushing setups depending on what you want to use it for!

@@SunriseSessions I cruised around in a pool a couple of times, but not fast or anything, so it didn’t really matter. Generally I’d probably rather ride tkp’s in pools and other transition!

can you do a full review on the fatty hawgs wheels and are they better than other soft wheels such as oj super juice wheels ?
Barak Golan I don’t have that exact pair of wheels anymore but the same in blue on my Dinghy (I have a build video about that too). Don’t think they are worth a full review, but I can tell that they are really soft and have a good grip for carving especially because of their offset and the long outer “lip”. Great for cruising! I have only a few times ridden OJ’s and they are a great wheel as well, yet not as “squishy” when you lean super hard into a carve. Hope that helps!

I want to know how you cut the oval in the grip tape
Took a round wooden cutting board from the kitchen, drew the outlines on the back of the grip and used some old scissors to cut!

Roland Relatores tough to say. It’s all preference. Some people like old school decks for cruisers, some like smaller decks with “old school shapes” like a landyachtz dinghy, or then a variety of longboards! All depends in what you look for in terms of riding style and feel.

Roland Relatores well if you’d tell me what kind of board (shape) you are interested in, I dan surely name some brands for you. If you are looking into something similar to the deck in this video, you could go for Powell Peralta, Santa Cruz, DogTown, Vision, Alva, Hosoi or Creature for example.
I like the deck shape of the landyachts dinghy but I just dont want to get that exact one.

why did you sell it? i was thinking i might need a shorter wheelbase re-issue with a small nose (lol i'm going through the same evolution as in the 80's - first a fishboard and then somdthing with a nose)
@@moonliteX didn’t go too much into any parks with it tbh. Was mostly cruising around and on the odd occasion maybe at Eltsu in the mini bowl. Sold it because I had another cruiser that served the purpose more at the time, but it was definitely a fun setup. Both on the RKPs and Indy 169s.
Generally speaking I think those re issues are definitely fun in bowls also like Suvilahti, but I guess regular TKP trucks like Indys or Ace would fit better there.
Hah I feel that, if you’re on the lookout for a re issue deck I have a Santa Cruz Rosskopp for sale on FB skeittikirppis atm.
Dude. What were you thinking. Beautiful P.P. Steve C. reissue deck. Sweet wheel & bearing setup. However in my opinion those trucks were way too much for that board. Should have stuck with the Indys. Nice grip job by the way.
Lol this vid is now a couple years old. Check through the comment section - I tried something else with the RKP trucks just for fun but ended up skating them more on 169 Indys :)

Fozuka Toku it’s the basic Caliber II. It should be 10” wide axle with a 180mm hangar.

This is old but yeah if it’s solely a cruiser then a tailbone helps preserve the tail. I use a tailbone on my cruiser and rib bones rails and I don’t do board slides either. Just helps preserve the graphic if you accidentally scrape the bottom of deck. Also gives it that genuine 80’s look and style.
