  • Marvel Comics has a Miles Morales problem. There seems to be people that think that Miles would be able to take over Peter Parker's place in comics and the culture at large, and all numbers show otherwise. Let's dive into why this is a bad idea, why Miles Morales isn't reaching his potential, and how to fix him.

    Miles Morales is an example on how ideology can ruin all potential. It would have been so easy to have Parker as the East Coast Spiderman in New York and Miles Morales as the West coast Spiderman in California.
    Instead they made him the token version of any other character.

      Agreed. The insistence on "there can only be one" by the people hoping he replaces Peter is the problem. Both being beloved characters would work far better in the long run, but we instead get another diversity hire

    I’ve said elsewhere that Batman Beyond did everything Marvel keeps trying to do with Miles far better. I think you came up with reasonable means of trying to make him work tho, much as I do not like how Marvel keeps trying to force the issue. My issue with the insomniac version however is they keep shortchanging Peter to make Miles look better than he is, especially not helped when it’s a story that frankly doesn’t have anything to do with him.

      Miles is a part of Peter's Community. He's a part of the people who are impacted by Peter's rampage in the black suit, and is in every sense of the world, Peter's Successor.
      Peter's struggles have plenty to do with Miles, because It is central to Miles character that, unlike Peter, he is an active and constant support to the people around him.

    The TL;DR on Across the Spider-Verse is that it's a big meta commentary against people who even have slight criticisms of Miles by using Miguel as their mouthpiece to spout what they believe the Miles haters say. Basically ATSV makes the bold and ridiculous claim that every Spider-Man in every media ever must follow specific "Canon Events" or else their universe will implode. Things like Uncle Ben's death are listed as fated events that cannot be prevented which obviously makes the entire point of his death pointless when nothing Peter could have done would have prevented it and if he did his universe would implode.
    Miles is used to show how "Canon" in the eyes of the directors and writers is stupid and people who care about continuity are stupid obsessed psychos and Miles is the brave boy to be the first person to stand up against the evil canon to be his own Spider-Man (ignoring that plenty of Spider people across multiple canons have had their own distinct stories). It's an atrocious movie and actively does more damage to Miles by directly antagonizing anyone who has even slight criticisms of his character which just made more people resent Miles. It doesn't help that they actively dumb Peter B down in ATSV to make him look stupid while also giving him next to no screentime which does extra damage when the mentor/student relationship from ITSV was the best thing that movie had going for it and the sequel throws it out to try to make Miles look better.

      Easier said than done. First, you have to know what Miles' character is comprised of. He can't quite do a perfect 1:1 to Peter Parker and, from what I've heard, this stems from lacking a specific family tragedy that compels his heroism. To be fair, that's fine--you don't need a reason to help people and Miles seems to embrace that. That's why I appreciate Barbara Gordon, Batgirl and Oracle alike, despite the implications that she might be a clueless liberal at times--she never witnessed anyone's deaths to realize that killing is bad or that heroism is necessary for society.
      Second, someone has to conjure content that isn't parallel to Peter's plight, lest they seem redundant. Half the reason anybody objects to Miles is that he's a carbon copy with different ethnicity under the assumption that said ethnic group will identify more with the notion of there being a Spider-Man. This is not a fair assumption for any party and it foments more racism than it confronts. You still need at least a few characters who specifically begrudge Miles. More than being distinct, Miles needs some kind of superhero-based antagonism as it is sorely lacking.
      Third, you need a consistent creative team who will prioritize actual storytelling above messaging. Considering the hiring practices, low margins of success, the perception of comic books being a springboard to Hollywood success, and the viciousness of freelancers who are addicted to outrage online, assembling some legitimate avengers who can turn back the tide and instill some humanity and wonder to Miles Morales appears to be a winning lottery ticket. But you can do it. Plus, it's worth trying to help everyone respect and love a character born from good intentions alone but only recently nurtured into something worth our attention.
      And fourth, yes, expand rather than contract. Just because there are fewer hands on deck and most of them are damage cases doesn't mean you should get rid of whatever has continued to work.

  • @HalfTangible
    @HalfTangible 8 месяцев назад +15

    Miles Morales would be fine if his fans weren't such shit and/or he was allowed to be his own character. I don't even mean in the 'stop calling him Spiderman' sense, I just mean give him his own roster of bad guys to beat up. So many of his "fans" insist that he has to fight the same villains as Peter Parker in order to be "Spiderman" but by doing this you will continually have him stuck in Peter's shadow.

      Rabble, The Assessor, Ultimatum, The Prowler, Multiple unique Brooklyn gangs.
      Miles has more unique enemies at his age now than Nightwing did when he was the same age.
      "Give Miles unique enemies," is an argument that comes out entirely too often, and falls entirely too short, because people are looking for the roster of a 60+yr tenured hero for a guy who's barely been around since 2011
      The argument that Miles isn't allowed to be his own character is also ass, because Peter has never had to deal with anything remotely related to Brooklyn Visions, has never had a Ganke to share the struggles of being spider-man with at his age, and furthermore, had to solve a lot of his problems without relying on the help of his friends and family. Miles is a Community Hero, unlike Peter who's historically been an absolute Loner, getting booted from the Fantastic 4 & the Avengers during the same period of his life.

    The problem is that they are so similar. Miles literally has the same origin story in the a Ultimate universe. 95% of the backlash would disappear if they just gave him a different name. Treating every "code name" as a mantle is silly. Some name sense like Green Lantern but for the most part calling the character something else is just easier. Whether it is Dr Doom rolling around as Infamous Iron Man or whatever... It was a dumb story from like 10 years ago. When Peter Parker became Sorcerer Supreme, he didn't call himself Dr Strange.

    • @zacharybosley1935
      @zacharybosley1935 8 месяцев назад

      Captain America called himself the "Soldier Supreme," and more to the point, Peter Parker Sorcerer Supreme was not a story about living up to the ideal of the OG. Miles being Spider-Man is a dissertation on what it means to "be" Spider-Man, and going by Stinger, or Kid Arachnid, or some other derivative of the name is not forging a path within the confines of expectations.

Phin doesn't really work in 1.5 on multiple levels, and Spiderman 2 has a story pacing problem of overusing Kraven and being afraid to have quiet moments. It feels like they should have had a prominent third villain alongside Kraven, and used Kraven a bit more sparingly.

    I think the biggest problem is that writers have no idea how to be effective in creating a new character. The comic book for Miles was a complete failure because they were trying to just make him Spider-Man instead of making him a unique and interesting character. I hen we get into the spider verse that takes Miles and absolutely makes people love him by giving him super interesting conflicts and backstory and personality. This is the same problem with literally every super hero . Create something new instead of rehashing the same old crap. I'm probably alone on this one. But this is just my little far fetched theory. Miles Morales is a insult to Spawn, and was sold as a tribute to Obama. Todd McFarlane launched his career with Spiderman, then made Image Comics with his Flagship Character Spawn. A character that looks like a Black Spiderman, but is unique and stands on his own by leaps and bounds.
    Looking at Al Simons Spawn and comparing him to Miles Morales. It's like we came full circle on pettiness. I would chalk it up to ideology, but what seems more reasonable. America being ready for or needing a already existing black Spiderman. Or, someone at Marvel with an axe to grind against Todd McFarlane. Because none of the selling points of Miles Morales stick because Al Simmons already exist and has been doing it better for almost 20 years before Miles.
    If you ever run into anyone who really likes or hates Miles. Just say "Spawn would beat his ass." And you won't even get questioned in the slightest. Peter's powers, intelligence, experience, & general capabilities as Spider-Man are virtually non-existent to the point where he constantly needs to be rescued by Miles and/or MJ and/or Harry; whereas Miles makes virtually zero mistakes, is constantly getting more power-ups, gets rescued by anyone other than himself a grand total of *ZERO* times throughout the entire game, & is generally presented by the narrative as the objectively superior Spider-Man between him & Peter(even though he really shouldn't be).
      Hell, after getting the Anti-Venom suit(which the game nerfs into being completely irrelevant), Peter even outright tells Miles "Why would the city ever need me... when it has you?" Even Miles' claim that it's "still a two Spider-Man job" rings pretty hollow considering everything that happens in the game before & after that scene, especially in light of the lead writer's claim that Miles will be the games' "main Spider-Man" going forward...

    Lol, it's not a "weird one". Listen very, very carefully friend; Miles IS in fact Spider-Man, period, full stop. This is absolutely not a point of contention or controversy. The character, much like his predecessor Peter Parker, is not a fan fiction creation, but a copyrighted Marvel property. Therefore, anyone who denies the undeniable reality that Miles Morales is Spider-Man (be it out of spite, emotion, or ignorance) is simply denying fact, and facts, unfortunately, don't care about your feelings.

      I can't listen to text, dude. Also, why did you leave a comment like you're cosplaying a bad GI Joe villain?

      He's one of several.
      Also, since you're not doing well with being on the spectrum, I'd suggest trying out therapy. Head over to autismspeaks dot org to find the help you need, buddy. Hope things get better for you.

      @@BigMicahC He's one of several, as is Peter. Yes, this is factual. One of several, and now the primary Spider-Man in Insomniac's game universe, thank God. You appear to be teachable, and this gives me hope.
