Spider-Man: Miles Morales just isn't the PlayStation game I was hoping for. The gameplay is greatm but the story of The Tinkerer and Simon Krieger just doesn't match the high bar set by Peter Parker and Doc Ock in the 2018 video game. In this video, I dig into my problems with it, but also praise what the game got right.

@Slipstreamz Bruh the Gameplay and Web-Swinging of Spider-Man Ps4 is supposed to be a Very Realistic Spider-Man game. I like Web of Shadows, but the Web-Swinging and Combat in Web of Shadows look Cartoony and a bit Unrealistic tbh imo...

@A . B Shah Bro. Insomniac before stated that they wanted to make the people who will play the game make you truly feel like Spider-Man. They wanted to make the Best Spider-Man experience in the Spider-Man Video game era. Meaning that they wanted to make a Realistic Spider-Man game to make players feel like they're playing the character, like they're the character. And they did, Insomniac did Incredibly amazing at the Web-Swinging, and the Combat especially the Story imo. Heck, it even was considered the Best Spider-Man game/Best Marvel game along with Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
Web Of Shadows had the Fastest Web Swinging and had Leapy Cartoonish Combat. But I still liked the game as a whole...

    My biggest issues:
    1. Phin's death was unearned and cheesy. She was perfectly willing to kill her best friend then just 180-ed. Her redemption wasn't earned at all, she should have died a villain.
    2. Pete's face.

    • @BruvahSulaiman

She would have if she were a white man perhaps. But minorities are only victims of circumstance who usually turn to villainy only because of what a white man has done to them.
She should've either died a villain or went to prison a villain.

Idk I liked how this game's story wasn't so much about Miles "becoming Spider-Man" like in Spider-Verse, but developing his own identity as a Spider-Man. If anything, doing all those missions around Harlem and helping its residents let you build a specific bond with the community that made the stakes of Phin and Krieger's plan far more intimate than Otto unleashing a giant virus on NYC in the first game. Then again in the COVID-era, that storyline might be timelier for Manhattan than it was two years ago.

Phin was really weak bc she’s essentially only mad at Miles bc he “lied” to her twice and wouldn’t listen to anything he had to say after that. (And each time was kind of necessary in the grand scheme of things.) In the first game we slowly but surely see Doc Oc become more mad and power hungry to the time it works. We also see his anger manifest over Oscorp more and more. He’s a tragic story. With Phin, she’s really just being a stubborn hypocrite who won’t listen. Her character doesn’t work at all.

To me it felt like phin was went to be what miles could have become if he didn't have Peter help him in the first game and to show Miles that you can't save everyone even with powers. In other words even though I thought her death is handled very well she was more of a plot device

    • @justwait9822
      @justwait9822 3 года назад +71

Phin was never really bad, her plan was to destroy roxxon plaza during a holiday so there wouldnt be causalities. Her plan only went awry because kreiger messed with the nuform and destabilized it. Doc ock released a bunch of supervillains to act as a distraction and released the devil breath with the full intent of killing a city full of people to blame Osbourne for it.
Phin was misguided but doesnt have a similar arc because she was never really villainous. Doc ock's story is his supervillain origin story.

    • @Slame333
      @Slame333 3 года назад +23

Mog Wi The comparison wasn’t good vs bad. The arcs are still similar bc we’re supposed to see how 2 once good people close to Peter/Miles discend into being questionable at best and evil villains at worst. Also, we are led to believe that she’s really bad. The game does nothing but portray her as bad up until the very end when she sees what she caused. It’s just not believable bc of the way she’s characterized. There’s no way a person as smart as her would think that blowing up an entire complex in Manhattan wouldn’t cause collateral damage and lives unless said person is so consumed by revenge to the point they didn’t care.... because they’re really bad. Which she didn’t.

You are forgetting the fact that you are comparing a teen to a grown man. Second, her brother was murdered right in front of her eyes. From the pain of lost and suffering can make you think irrationally.
And no, the game does not betray her as just bad. She was actually willing to work with Miles until Rhino got into her head.

    • @Slame333
      @Slame333 3 года назад +61

@@deucezulu_22 A teen to a grown man. A teen who runs an underground crime syndicate and commits crimes against the city and innocent civilians. But yeah, sure, just a teen. Second, another moot point. Just bc you can apply logic to her character doesn’t mean that she’s not underwritten.
And yeah, the game does portray her as bad. She was willing to work with Miles one instant and then threatened to kill him seconds later, all bc of Rhino. Miles didn’t even get the chance to defend himself at all. She just kept shooting him down. All to magically have this aha moment at the end of the game. That’s bad character development.

The charges on Krieger were based on the files on newform in his office Miles found before their final fight with Rhino. I never saw Krieger as a deep, true villian, just more of a frame that surrounded the true issue with Phin and her brother. Yeah he's a by the books, money hungry CEO Disney villain, but I think that's all he needed to be for this game. It's a smaller game with a smaller story, not all of New York was in danger. Mainly Harlem. Yeah, they could've shown more with the relationship between Phin and Miles to make us care a little more, and I see the similarities between Otto and Phin but I think that's the point in a way. Miles and Peter are gonna come across similar situations but deal with them in their own ways as Spider-Man. I think this is a pretty good intro into this version of Miles. It's also Miles's first big adventure on his own without Peter. It didn't need to be an "Avengers level threat" like the last game. The small side missions that show off the character of Harlem and its residents try to make it so you care about the people of the neighborhood when Harlem is threatened. I loved the game, it does lag on the ps4 cause the system just can't handle the loading. But that didn't take away from my overall enjoyment as a whole. I give it a solid 7/10. Good start for Miles, good improvements on the mechanics of the original game, looking forward to more.

In my opinion, the Tinkerer should have been replaced with the villain/antihero CARDIAC. The character of Phin could essentially stay the same but her vigilante name should have been Cardiac to reflect that comic book character instead. Cardiac's whole motivation is being ant-corporation after having faced personal family tragedy at the hands of corporations and he has a really sweet design that would have translated well (plus the name Tinkerer is... silly). I think that this would have been a better use of re-theming a comic book character to fit thematically much better than the use of Tinkerer. Especially since Cardiac fills the role of an Spider-Man antihero in the comics already as opposed to a straight-up villain like the Tinkerer

My biggest issue with the story is how much it asks me to suspend my disbelief with Phin. After she finds out Miles is Spider-Man, Miles spends the rest of the campaign begging her not to blow up the building and despite all logic and reason, she dismisses every attempt. To make matters worse, in the 3rd Act when Miles tries to warn her of the explosion she refuses to even hear it. And when she does finally hear it, she once again dismisses it. And *THEN* at the very end they really expect me to care when she detonates the building and just then realizes she made a mistake.

I dunno man, I feel like we can’t criticize the plot for being too similar to the first game’s and then blame it for not pulling off the same things that game did. I thought it was a fantastic game, I think Phin worked very well because she is very specifically not Miles’ old friend anymore, she’s as new to him as she is to us even if he doesn’t realize it at first. I don’t think there’s any problem with “what you see is what you get”. True, billionaire corporate CEOs don’t usually get arrested, and a criminals word definitely wouldn’t be enough (though I believe he submitted significant evidence of their work together). It IS actually quite realistic that a company like Roxxon keeps operating exactly as it was and just simply disavows a man like him as someone who abused his position, thereby making themselves look like the good guys and him as a rogue element. Anyway, I thought the game was brilliant, but I respect your feelings on it.

Agreed. My favorite Phin line was the half-sob line “I’m sorry.” Because we know that she never intended to hurt Harlem, or to hurt Miles, or anything. And she did it all for a close friend of hers. I think that Phin is a brilliant character and is way different from Otto in that (A: She’s Mile’s peer, not his boss/mentor. (B: She doesn’t go crazy, and is doing what she’s doing as a revenge plot, and only partly because she hates Kreiger. And of course, (C: At the end of the day, she chose to be a hero.

@@jollyd.joestar3937 Yeah, I didn’t literally mean “Mentor/Boss.” I was just using a close approximation to Admirer. But the point I’m trying to make is: Peter was inspired by Otto, and Peter wanted to be like him. Or wanted to have some elements that he has. (Being a smart scientist, doing the right thing, being able to handle responsibility without it crumbling in you, etc.) I, however, don’t think that Miles “Admired’ Phin. I think he really respected Phin, and really appreciated her in his life, but I think it was more of a peer relationship rather than a role-model or admire-like relationship. Plus, Phin (As discussed earlier with Ada, Myers) is different from Otto in the sense that she doesn’t go insane, doesn’t become dependent on her creation, (Otto was obsessed with his arms. Phin only saw her tech as a tool) and Phin is way younger and has more motor control over her functions. (And in the end Phin was a hero. Although that was discussed earlier) Everyone absorbs art differently, I just think that the relationship between Miles and Phin are way too different to be called “Someone reacting to the same situation that someone else went through, but different since the person is different from the other person.”

If they had waited to reveal that she was the tinkerer until halfway through the game I would not have enjoyed it nearly as much as I did. I came to care about phin by doing things like the time capsule missions and the mission where you infiltrate the underground. What would have made things better in my opinion would have been having a few more flashbacks that you get to play through or just some cutscenes of them in high school. Miles himself says Rick wouldn’t like her like this, and it just doesn’t add up, she would’ve gone to Miles/Rio after Rick’s death, not the Underground and be someone that was secretly raised by Magneto offscreen or something . That was the biggest storytelling problem above all else, never mind how hard it is to buy into her being a super genius that can create anything with programmable matter, the likes of which upstage even Tony Stark. It was very obvious that the writing and the team overall was the B team while the A team are working on the big sequel; all they managed to improve on was the quality/integration of side quests/activities into the themes/story of the main game, as well as the levels being integrated into the open world and improved combat, all things that were expected as a follow-up to 2018’s foundation.

@@sharilshahed6106 this is that same cookie cutter logic people use when they say all marvel movies are the same. The only real similarities between the two of them are the fact that they are smart and friends with the protagonist. That’s really it. If we go by that logic, both of them are just copies of dr. Conners. Both of them were screwed over by a rich man sure, but the context between the two are completely different. Dr. Ock had a personal connection with Norman. His motivation was about revenge solely. Phin isn’t trying to get revenge before or after the death of her brother. She sees herself as saving Harlem by getting rid of roxxon. Shoot, she doesn’t even wanna kill kreiger. The tinkerer is a foil to miles. Their relationship turns into an ideological struggle. Personally I'm also pretty split on the Tinkerer in this game, mainly because of the whole 'driven by vengeance' aspect, which really got on my nerves by the end where she refuses to listen to Miles. Don't get me wrong it made sense why she didn't want to listen to him, but it's such a cliché amongst that style of villain that isn't entertaining. Octavius in the first game we know by the end was doing bad things even before the neural interface which added a lot more depth to his villainy, but Phin seemed like a genuine person with good intentions so the lengths she goes to seem pretty extreme. Now again I get it, loss and hate does a lot to a person, but to me not only was I not all that invested in the loss of Rick, but those also don't always make for the most interesting villains as it often feels like their motive overcrowds their character. People seem to focus a lot lately on villain motives but forget that a lot of great villains also have very distinct personalities to compliment that and make them feel more rounded, to me Phin like you said didn't have enough of a clear character and history for me to be invested in why she did what she did, but that's just my opinion.

Yes the story beats of this game are almost identical to the prior game. However I think some of that is unavoidable due to the fact it's a superhero story and while the overall narrative was familiar I still grew to care about the character of phin and her relationship to miles. Finding the time capsules throughout the city and story missions like the one where she introduces you to the underground are really engaging and made me care about the character. When she died at the end of the game I actually felt something. Also the fact that she finds out miles is Spider-Man early and the game spends a lot of time dealing with the fallout of that is really cool. The focus of the story was on Miles and Phin and that's why it succeeded for me. While I enjoyed the prior Spider-Man game its focus shifted a lot and that really affected my investment. We start by focusing in Martin li but by the end of the gane he becomes almost a side character and doctor octopus is the true antagonist. It felt disjointed and while I loved insomniac's dr octopus it made mister negative's presence feel redundant to the story and they didnt do a lot to make him memorable. We dont even really learn his origin and why he hates Osborne until almost the end of the game and even then it's just through a single video that MJ sees and has to tell peter about.

Yea you said pretty much exactly how I felt. But I have some other things to add. ( just some thoughts)
    - Aron Davis has almost no real reason to be in the base story , if I take him out almost nothing changes
    - this version of miles morales still feels unstable like if they’re not sure how to write him he’s way too much in one, he’s a scientist and a musician , but a basketball player and a social butterfly and he’s Spider-Man and he goes to a private school and just a lot of other stuff that made the character for me hard to understand. In spider-verse he’s a graffiti artist and being an artist went into pretty much his whole character , it’s fantastic. But he doesn’t have the same kind of treatment here.
    - Simon has basically no motivation for anything that he does. There’s a reason to why he wants it done in Harlem but no actual benefit besides “ oh this will make him money” even though he seems to already be a billion air. I don’t get why he doesn’t keep developing new form to a point where it’s maybe not as good but safer. I feel like that would’ve came across as a no brainer idea that would’ve made him a lot more money.
    - this could be done later on in the series but why does miles not get any symptoms at all of becoming sick at the end of the game? Everyone that was just even around new form got sick. Miles sucked in and pushed out like 4-5 small reactors full of it and than the huge unstable one at the end. But as soon as the game ends , miles is just fine. Now they could change this in the next game but it was odd he felt normal at all after finishing the story.
    - Why does Harlem specifically call miles “ their Spider-Man “ did peter just never go around Harlem? Did he forget about Harlem or something? I mean the story is set in Harlem and Harlem is suffering the most , but I still never understood why miles is the people of Harlem’s specific Spider-Man. Miles was protecting all of New York not just Harlem. I mean if I’m remembering right even half of or more of the neighborhood side quests aren’t even in Harlem but all across New York. The only other thing I can think of is if the deaf girl only says he is because he’s a minority just like they she is, but then how in the world does she even know that?
    - Phin and miles’ friendship feels forced. I think they really added in too many characters and they wanted a huge story but they should’ve done a story just a little smaller but more focused.

I don’t have a problem with Krieger being a “flat” villain because I don’t really see him as the villain. I think he served as more of a context for Phinn and her mixed views of justice, which was awesome to explore. I like the underground purely for their “cyberpunk” aesthetic and I don’t think they needed to be anything more than punching bags. I also don’t think that the game ended predictably, I legit had no idea how it was going to end when the final boss fight was happening. The story as a whole feels grounded and very “friendly neighborhood.” It’s rooted in saving the people Miles loves and that impacted me much more than the first game, which had Peter saving a city of civilians I don’t really care about. I feel like this game retreaded the story of the first game but with more emotional weight. The Phinn/Miles relationship felt more real and familiar than the Otto/Peter relationship.

As a black kid that values representation just a lil bit less than the average normie, the Miles Morales game feels like a celebration and its just so....cool to me, it's cool to see the cultural side of new york, the part-spanish speaking household, the tims in the snow, an ASL girl being in the best side missions I've ever seen in a game, and lastly, a person that looks like me and lives like me in the suit, bc that proves to me that truly, anybody can wear the mask, you just gotta have what it takes. I definitely see your criticism of the "main but not really" villain, but I think Phin is done well, in addition to the dialogue and the emotion behind all the major fights, in 2018, If I wasn't a spiderman shill, i wouldn't know why Peter cared so much about Miles' dad dying, and even for some people, Doc Ock was done poorly (i disagree but I can see why) he has lik what 3 scenes and a couple texts before he turns evil, and even Peter never really mentions him outside of when its time for him, Miles is always talking about phin, and the fact that Miles has to go thru similar events to what Pete went through as a KID, I think is intentional, because Miles is new, hes young and we can see how it takes a much larger toll on him than someone whos been doing it. Spidey 2018 was definitely a great story, the best peter, a celebration of what Spiderman has been since 1962, but Miles is what Spiderman means to me since October 22, 2003.

The worst part about Spider-Man: Miles Morales is that it's actually good. If it was just another gimmicky PS5 launch title, a 4-hour tech demo, which I kinda went in expecting it to be, it would have been just fine. It would quickly be swept under the rug and forgotten about.
But no, they had to try to squeeze a full-on story adventure into it, and that's what ruined it. Not the game, the adventure. It had the potential to be so much more - a proper sequel to the 2018 game. This could easily have been fleshed out to AT LEAST a 15 hour experience, if only they gave themselves not just more time, but also a bigger scope. We can only imagine how well-developed the story could have been, but all we have now is a funky mixture of well-written characters, cool plot ideas and potentially emotional moments that we'll never be able to not only relive, but even live through fully in the first place. They are stuck as they are now - rushed, undermined and not willing to take risks.

To me it feels like the game needs a little more padding, like I wasn't expecting it to be epic and grand as the first game but I do agree with your points.
I do think Simon Krieger could've gotten some more backstory to be fleshed out, and something outside of Prowlers word to get him arrested, like maybe a mission where you find some daming evidence on him.
Tinkerer definitely could've used more, one thing that annoyed me is how they used to cliche of "you lied to me!" On miles when he (technically) didn't, I hate that trope. Also her turn at the end felt like it didn't happen because she realized what was happening but because it needed to. Other than that, I thought it was a solid game and I even cried at the end.

I also hate the fact that peter basically just leaves. Like come on Peter is not the type of guy that would leave his city in the hands and protection of a teenager who's very new to all this. I know Peter had that too, he didn't had a mentor and he was on his own at a very younger age than miles does but like won't that be the very reason Peter would stay and be a mentor to Miles. I think it would have been more impactful if in the rhino fight Miles had the chance to save Peter from like a deadly punch or something but miles misses it due to his lack of experience and because of that peter gets hit and suffers a serious Injury that maybe lead to him being in a coma or basically something that made Peter hospitalize or severely injure to the point he can't fight. That would have been more impactful as now Miles feels responsible for it as his mistake lead to Peter having to be out of the fight and now he has to own it up by being the only Spiderman left so far to protect New York

"It's not a bad game but it fails to live up to Peter's"
That right there I think sums up your issue with the game but I don't think that's the game's fault. It seems to me like you were expecting a full-blown sequel here rather than a high-quality side story, that's part of why this is a much shorter game and story. The writers clearly knew what they were doing with the similarities between Miles and Phin and Otto and Peter, they were meant to parallel each other not be rip-offs, best seen when the two duos literally bump into each other during that flashback scene, they knew what they were doing there.
You really seemed to expect Miles story to be too much of its own thing but by virtue of him being Peters protege on his first solo adventure that couldn't have been the case. This isn't about Miles becoming Spiderman it's about him recognizing his identity and potential to be his OWN Spiderman, so there will be similarities but they are very much his own, best seen when he takes the suit Peter made for him and makes the now iconic Miles suit. It parallels the scene from Peters game where Otto helps him make his white spider suit but serves a different purpose, there Peter was accepting a friends help in making himself a better suit but because he refuses to let too many people in on his secret that was pretty much all Otto could really do for him. Miles, on the other hand, comes to recognize that he doesn't have to do things as Peter does, he mentions at one point that Peter said it's a "rule" that you never tell anyone you're secret identity but this just doesn't work for Miles. He comes to find value in having his own support system to help him out, first with Ganke, then with Uncle Aaron, and even his mother are all let in on the secret and they all support and help him to varying degrees. This is something Peter has always been too afraid to do but it goes to further show how similar yet different he and Miles are.
Predictable isn't always a bad thing, I too saw where things were likely going for Phin and I dreaded it every step of the way. I was hoping she could live through to the end but that obviously just wasn't meant to be, didn't matter at all that I saw her death coming. As for Simon, I mean I guess they could have had him get away but I don't mind him being caught either. It goes to further make Phins story even more tragic because this proves that Miles was right, if they had just gone public with everything Simon was doing he would have been arrested and Roxxon would have been finished, but she was so blinded by rage and grief that that option was unacceptable, she needed to make Simon hurt in any way she could, just as Otto couldn't let his beef with Norman go. I also LOVED everything done with Uncle Aaron, he's far more sympathetic here than he's ever been and I love that he isn't just stuck as a villain through to the end since he does get a moment of redemption at the end and could possibly begin to mend his relationship with Miles and his family later, but does still get arrested himself and is still paying for what he's done too. His side missions were some of the first ones I finished, just the right amount of challenge without being frustrating and the reward for finishing them was awesome and well worth it.
I found this game's story to be, yes, shorter than the first but every bit as engaging. Part of this is me further relating to Miles as a young black man myself, that scene where he's about to be shot by the Roxxon guys on the bridge really hit me in a place. It's not exactly the Miles game I would have made but I'm more than happy with what I got.

I absolutely loved this game, just as much as 2018’s SM. Midnight, you have created a well crafted video and made your points very well. For me personally, this game was more about Miles and his image in the community more so than it was a sort of origin story that we got in Spider-Verse. Throughout the game you can constantly see people’s doubt toward Miles’s capabilities as Spider-Man. Scroll through the social feed in the pause menu. Walk on the sidewalk and listen to how NPC’s react to you. The side missions, which are great, like you mentioned, do a really good job of establishing the relationship between Miles and the community. One of the very first ones with the missing cat for instance. Teo, the owner, was sort of chafed upon seeing him enter the bodega to respond to his request for help. I do think that the antagonists could’ve been a bit more involved, or fleshed out, namely The Tinkerer. Krieger was more so a plot device himself and honestly I was okay with that, but the thing about Spider-Man is that some of his greatest villains not only have a connection with his super hero identity, but his real one as well. If we had seen or known more about Phin, maybe in the first game along with Miles like you said, the impact of her actions and their relationship would be felt a bit more.
Aside from that, great game, great video, thank you once again for a wonderful analysis.

I'm not familiar with Mile's current run in 616 universe, but do they still call him 'Spider-Man'? Isn't that name taken? Like, I know Spidey had a lot of imitators and people taking up the mantle, but they never went by the same hero name as him, it's always Scarlet-Spider, or Dusk or when he's dead or M.I.A., which is exactly what was the precedent, but do they literally have two heroes with the same superhero title?
Would that not get extremely awkward?
"Reed, we need to get Spider-Man, he holds the key to defeating Mysterio!"
    - Uhhh, wait, which Spider-Man? The ah, uh... 'urban-sounding' Spider-Man ?

I can see your problems with the game, and share them to an extent, but I’m more in the camp of Hi-Top Films. I loved the emphasis on the community this game has. Really makes Spider-Man feel like a Friendly Neighborhood hero. It takes the looking out for the little guy aspect from the first game and doubles down on it. Felt like pure Spider-Man. Felt like what MCU Spider-Man should have been.
Also, Krieger gets arrested because Miles finds incriminating evidence in Krieger’s files. That combined with Prowler, Krieger’s associate, confessing to everything led to Krieger’s arrest.
