  • Hello guys! Today I'm trying a new thing, a reaction video! Here I'm searching RUclips for videos of other people backing b-trains, and giving my input as the videos progress. If you enjoy this kind of thing let me know I'll make more! Also if you have any recommendations for future videos I'm all ears as well!

Just this week I sat in traffic from a b train backing into a tight access from a 2 lane road. People instantly started honking after the 3rd correction. After a few more corrections he got it right in there in under 10min. Once I passed by I could see it was a very young kid still in his 20's, gave him a 👌minty and he smiled with a wave. I got a lot of respect to the truckers of the world.

Very stressful for these truckers. I always give them some common road courtesy. Best to just ignore the car Karens because what are they going to do? Get mad inside their cars and call your manager?

Hi Matt, the B-double at 33:20 is Australian. The rear trailer is around 45 feet long and the whole B-double would be around 80 feet (25 meters). Backing into a dock is a lot easier if they paint lines on the pavement for your wheels to line up on because you have to park in the centre of the doorway and also be square on to the dock. I'm good at backing B-trains until I know someone is watching... then everything goes sideways! In my experience, I have found that the trick to backing anything difficult is to take it slow and easy and stay calm. If you get flustered, you're better off to take five, calm down, think it through and start again... and if that doesn't work, don't take it out on your equipment, it's not the truck's fault!😃

Dear Matt, as a simple central European guy The first B train I saw was on your video. We do not have these combinations. (I think) Backing a truck like this is Artwork to me, Art written with a capital A. It is advanced mathematics as well. I drove a single trailer truck loaded with paper as a job student in the late seventies. Backing a single trailer combination responds direct on the movement of the steering wheel, but I do not even understand how to direct the second trailer. Another thing is the bad view of one of the rear ends of the second trailer. I watched you backing uphill and know that that is an extra difficulty as well. Thanks for your explanation and please go on making these videos

On a B train or Super B which just has one more axle on the bridge which is the middle group of axles between the two trailers, looking backwards in the mirror if you want the rear trailer to go to your left you steer your front tractor to the left and the reverse to go to the right. Only experience and practice will get you to the point of knowing what you need to do with the front trailer directed by the tractor to steer the back trailer. If you have played pool the principles are the same as steering a b train. In the first video with the Laidlaw truck he has to put an aggressive kink in the combination to get the rear trailer around essentially a 90 degree angle. Sometimes because the front trailer and tractor need a fair bit of sideways space that may make it extremely difficult or not achievable. I have parallel parked a B train on some of the side streets in Vancouver. Using all the available room and initial setup is essential . Because of modern technology a series of cameras at the back of the trailer and at the bridge would be very helpful. Above all never be afraid to get out and look for clearances if unsure. But that goes for any trailer / tractor combination. In time you learn what angle is needed to direct the rear trailer and when to start to straighten the front trailer to get to a straight line of the whole unit to continue backing in a straight line down a roadway that is straight or as the situation presents itself. In my early days a friend of mine backed a super B out of a lumber yard road that had several curves in total about 500 feet and about 3 feet of clearance on each side of the truck. Did it without stopping. I was in awe as I sat in the passenger seat. Be very slow and easy and over time with a lot of practice and the right attitude you can get good at it. Good driving.

Hy, so the ALDI-Train must be in New Zealand and the Loading is only in line. The last Trailer has Doors on the Back and the Front so they load through the whole Train! In Germany or Europe dont drive B-Trains, only on spezial allowed Streets and Highways. An B-Train like yours has the same pivot point as an articulated truck the only opposit is your Train needs more "presure" to bring him in circle, so he wants to go straight backwards.
It was Amazing to see your Reaction and I hope we see moooooooore of All 😉👍🏼 I hope ju undrestand my bad English, my shooltime is a very long time ago 😇

Dude, fyi. I’ve shared your videos with several old timers and everyone has had the same reaction and been absolutely impressed with your work. I grew up backing hay wagons with tractors and it’s pretty similar to a b train. Minus the pressure of people and trucks watching me do it but you got it down and are a fine hand at the wheel. Keep it safe and keep it on the road, see you on the next one call. 👍

    GerDay mate,
I haven’t read through all the comments so I dunno if this has already been addressed, but if they have, just ignore me - people normally do!!!!! 😂😂😂
The second last clip you reacted to was definitely in Australia as we call “B-Trains” “B-Doubles” over here, it was right hand drive, was a cab over (I think….and most of ours are, except tippers and livestock, although conventionals are becoming more common place) AND it was a 3 axle truck with 2 X tri axle trailers …..all dead giveaway signs.
We have B-Doubles on just about EVERY style of freight here. We refer to the front trailer as the “A” trailer and the back as the “B” trailer. How the “A” is unloaded is variously by sliding the axles forward to butt the body up on the dock etc OR, more commonly, rolling the bin, van or whatever BACK to the end of the chassis, via rollers and an endless chain, OR with a horizontal 2 way hydraulic hoist.
    More in next comment.

Thanks for the video. The first truck did a great job, like you often do. I am in New Zealand and drive b tri axles. I am a part time relief. At the end of a shift, we have to back our truck into a park. Between all the other trucks in the fleet. Its a blind side and not a lot of room. Plus, you are tied often dark & raining or middle of day, lots of other trucks & the boss watching. One point you did say is the surface, we are on a slop diagonal to park on to soft grave, when you hit the gravel, the back trailer moves all over the place. Love the videos.

Many years ago had to go into the coastal mountains of British Columbia on a logging road to pick up a load of shake blocks. I was instructed to turn around at such and such marker and back the B train about another !/4 of a mile further up the road because there was not enough room to turn the unit around further up. As I backed up the road became a steep hill with a curve to it requiring a slight bend in the combination.Because of gravity and the bend in the unit the middle [bridge] would start to push away from center line and the only way to correct because the road was quite narrow was to pull forward to straighten the unit. That was not helping because I was then going in the wrong direction. I tried about 6 times and the unit essentially would not track because of the grade and gravity pushing the bridge sideways more than needed and not enough room to correct with the front trailer and tractor. The owner of the shake blocks had his forklift and about 250 feet of heavy rope. When I got as far up the hill before the trailer went goofy we hooked up to the rear trailer. That pull kept the back trailer from pushing out the bridge and got over the hill and onto flat road where the trailers where loaded with shake block pallets. Rest of the trip was uneventful.

I think that aldi vid was australia as you thought. there are a few road train drivers in australia posting videos, not much backing from memory, but driving through very remote parts of australia with red dust dirt roads, crossing creeks without a bridge, once a decade floods, that sort of thing. some are 2 drivers aka 2 up, 1 sleeps, 1 drives. most are single drivers. some good aussie characters.

I have seen some amazing drivers with B doubles, in Australia. A lot of the tip trucks for road works are like this. The places they get into are a joke. And somehow they jackknife and tip both trailers, in super tight spots. I watched a guy get into a loading dock. Meant for a semi. Straight in, first go. Unloaded back trailer. Gone. He obviously couldn't be bothered to split trailers. Then you get the Road train guys. Pulling mostly three or four trailers. There are exceptions, up to six. But three or four, common. Where they manoeuvre them is beyond belief. Like a big snake squirming in the road. If you spend days at a time in them. And drive tens of thousands of kilometres. You get a lot of practice. Practice makes perfect.

While Laidlaw did a 1st class job, I'll bet it's far from his first time into that spot. He probably does it once or twice a week, if not nightly. The first time into any place is always more dicey in my experience. Everyone has good days and bad days, no matter how much experience you've got. Best way to learn and understand the concept, with absolutely no risk, is playing with models. Concept is identical, just the scale is larger, but once you've got the concept, scaling up is relatively easy. Farm boys have a head start because they've been playing with the wagons since early on. Trucking schools here in S. Ont have little clue. It's a travesty.

A-trains have the fifth wheel mounted on a dolly, b-trains have the fifth wheel mounted on the lead trailer

@@callthemalllove your videos. I used to run A-trains in Michigan. I’ve only done it once, but I did a blind side hard-90 with my trains and never pulled forward. I think I just got lucky 🍀 but I do have 20yrs behind the wheel 🤙

I love watching your videos. But this one made me furious. Let the backing up videos play and comment it while watching. Play, pause, play, pause. I stopped watching you after 5minutes 😡
