  • Comparing the Japanese and English voices of Vexen.
    Tatsuya Kando vs. Naichi Nozawa
Naichi Nozawa vs. Derek Stephen Prince
Tatsuya Kando provides the battle grunts for Vexen, as he did for Marluxia. With this one, however, the voice he puts on just doesn't fit, sounding too wimpy and impossible to take seriously. Veteran voice actor Naichi Nozawa, who voiced another mad scientist from Square Enix, Professor Hojo of Final Fantasy VII fame, does a far better job. Not only is his voice fitting, but his performance is fittingly crazed, diabolical, and insufferably arrogant. The only issue is the voice actor's age, which is obvious and much older than the character's is meant to be.
Derek Stephen Prince was one of the best choices the casting department ever turned up. He captures everything from Nozawa's performance and also adds his own unique flavor to it. While both performances are close, I have a slight preference for Prince. He is just too perfect.

    Vexen: "No, please! I don't want t-"
    Axel: "Goodbye."
I dunno why I found that funny, tbh.

Now, should Even or Vexen make an appearance again, we need someone who can emulate the late Nachi Nozawa's perfect mad scientist voice. To be fair to the age thing, Vexen doesn't really look that young himself. If he is not that old, he's certainly a guy who didn't age well. Very gaunt appearance, befitting a mad scientist like him, so the aged voice fits.

And sadly, we did NOT get that. Vexen's voice in the latest KH3 trailer sounds nothing like Nozawa, and is such a huge step down as a result. At least the English version should still have Prince. (Ironically, the situation is flipped in another situation - the Japanese got a perfect replacement voice for Master Xehanort, whereas the English version did not)

I know that the English voice matches the mouth movements for Vexen... But the problem is that, upon closer inspection it feels like the voice isn't coming out of Vexen's mouth. Like, could Square REALLY have not put forth the effort to adjust the mouth movements for the English voices on the US release? They do that for the current Final Fantasy games. So, why couldn't they have done the same here? Worst part is, this came out two years shy of Final Fantasy XIII... Where the mouth movements are adjusted to the English voice acting.

They usually do, but from what I understand, it was a smaller team that worked on Re: CoM, and I guess the game wasn’t enough of a priority for them to actually bother with that kind of editing.

@@ShotgunAdams To clarify: the “big-budget” games (the numbered games, important bridges like BBS or DDD) use the in-game engine for most cutscenes, and can be adjusted accordingly fairly easily. The lower-budget stuff (ReCoM, Days, etc.) use pre-rendered cutscenes; while those too can be adjusted, the low budget/priority generally means they don’t bother (except perhaps in very niche cases).

Vexen's English voice actor also voiced Shadow Knight Oswald from Odin Sphere, who is one of my all time favorite characters.
