Larxene - Voice Compare

Comparing the Japanese and English voices of Larxene.
Reiko Katayama vs. Yuko Miyamura
Yuko Miyamura vs. Shanelle Gray
Reiko Katayama only supplied battle grunts for Larxene in the original GBA version of CoM. She did well enough, although she obviously wouldn't have been able to do much more than that since she's not an actual voice actress but a member of the development team. Yuko Miyamura, on the other hand, is a veteran voice actress most famous for voicing Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion, a character with an attitude similar to Larxene's. Miyamura is a case of ideal casting, and it was little wonder that she was the first new voice chosen when RE:COM entered production.
In terms of the sound of her voice and her general acting, Shanelle Gray does a great job in matching Miyamura's performance. But there are two problems. One is that the need to lip-synch to the original animation rather than altering the animation to fit the dub creates several moments where Gray's delivery is stilted and awkward. The other is that Miyamura provided a more psychopathic childish quality to Larxene that Gray doesn't, which means that some scenes don't work as well as they did in the Japanese version. While Gray does an otherwise terrific job, I have a slight preference toward Miyamura here.

I've never heard of her Japanese voice before so this is eye opening to me. I personally prefer Gray's deeper, more matured voice especially when it goes all hoarse with the grunts and angriness that she portrayed but damn Miyamura has that cute insane vibe that really gives you the chills. I guess I just prefer a slightly more matured Larxene rather than a cute younger portrayal with the Japanese dub.

What was Reiko’s dev role in the original CoM? I can’t find her in the credits other than as Larxene

Fascinating. It blew my mind to find out that Vexen, Marluxia and Lexaeus were all voiced by the same guy AND that he was the animation director of all things.
