  • Dexter was on track to have a spot in the Television Hall of Fame, but it sold away its chance. Its underlying issues built up until its explosion in the horribly rated final season. This is how Dexter destroyed his own show.

3:59 That was the first sign of how lazy and cowardly the Dexter writers were. Instead of Dexter having to make a hard choice Lila was used as a convenient plot device so he didn't have to kill Doakes.

@@Xehanort10 I think a better way, to deal with the Mr.Doakes problem, is that a short circuit happens, with the electrical outlet.
In which a few sparks shot out, some hit an area, where some spilled dry paint thinner is at, that starts a fire, it slowly spreads to the rest of the old cabin.
And eventually the fire spreads, which managed to burn half of the old cabin, and it’s in the very half where Mr.Doakes’s metal cage is at.
So he burns to death, while (Dexter Morgan) is away, the fire gets the attention of someone, a few hours later, and that person reports a fire at an old abandoned cabin.
In addition the person also reports, they discovered a dead body, burned beyond recognition, that was found in the cabin, behind a metal cage.
Now when it comes to Dexter’s GPS data, I imagine he destroyed it all, after he saw the place was burning, and heard over the radio what had been discovered.

I also feel like we lost out on some truly interesting debates between Dokes and Dexter.
They touched on it a tiny bit but Dokes is straight up a murderer somewhat like Dexter.
The only difference is Dokes seems to do it because he believes it’s right whereas Dexter does it because he wants to and he doesn’t think it’s wrong.

If anyone killed the show, it was the writers. The ending of season 8 and new blood were very underwhelming and could have gone so many other ways that most likely would have turned out better.

So, I'm currently in the early bit of Season 2, but the way I would have handled it regarding Doakes is that Dexter kills Doakes. But he starts to question the code and more importantly starts questioning Harry. The crumbs are already there in season one with Brian and Harry getting rid of Dexter's file. Dexter is a very observant person, always picking up on the little details.
The way I'd handle it is that Dexter tries to investigate himself and Harry, possibly even some therapy as well. Proper therapy where he unpacks his trauma and eventually realizes that he wasn't born a killer; he was groomed into one. After all, he genuinely didn't want to kill Brian and his issues with being unable to kill early on in S2 could be a display of trauma. My personal reading of Dexter is autistic with PTSD and a special interest in blood. He might even come to resent Harry, thinking that those hunts and all that Harry did to 'help' was just him living his vigilantee dreams through Dexter.
And Dexter would be faced with a decision: does he stop killing entirely or does he still do it? My answer would be him trying to unlearn killing, possibly finding a healthier outlet. He'd try, fail, and try again since as you said, killing is an addiction for Dexter. That would also mean Rita being alive to keep up the stakes and also to avoid the possible incest stuff with Dex and Deb.
Maybe, just maybe, a scenario where Dexter would be forced to kill and Rita would know. Both of them now left wondering how to deal with this.

The biggest problem was the show kinda resets itself in S6. The ending of S4 should have been the beginning of the end for the show, doing 1 or 2 seasons more.
Showtime just knew how lucrative Dexter was so they kept the show going longer than it needed to

Dexter masking his life could had been a great show on identity and connection. Based on what I saw on this video, it seems the writers should had focused on the relationships around Dexter not on Dexter making impossible choices that undermines who he is and is meant to become. He's different but uses his difference to bring harmony to a hostile world to him while satiating his desires to kill. Hiding but accepting himself being different. The fun is him hiding who he is but gradually connect to others in his life. Gradually learning to trust a few to love him and being there for them living their own different lives with love (or acceptance). You should not have a lot of seasons for a character like him. He's a glass cannon, one shot kind of thing.

If the (DEXTER) show got rebooted someday; I think Dexter’s half sister Debra, should not die in the last episode, of the final season, but instead she ends up in a temporary coma, and then wakes up from it two months later.
I also think that Dexter Morgan, should die in the process, after successfully saving his half sister Debra.
And before Dexter dies, a van comes by, with four good individuals in it, and they take his sister to the hospital.

Now I see... Writers removed ALL elements from the first book, one by one, at each following seasons. Doakes, Rita, Debra and the code. That's the core, the Holy Cross + the gospel mantaining Dexter as a proper character into his universe fixed with glue and tape. And those elements are the things they tried to reconfigurate without success. What else is the series about? Bloody coincidences. S4 isn't even a good ending, although a good season. Latter changes in the code part makes all previous dilema weak: when Dexter could just kill everybody, and every other aspect turns into a self-imposed limitation, what else matters? Not even a natural event can kill the guy... He did what he wanted, left unpunished. Great 10/10

dexter did kinda become a villain during the end of dexter: new blood, the moment he breaks his code as he kills a cop to escape is also when his own son shoots him as he fit his own code. this jus my take on this

If you want dexter to be a believable person, you would ruin the show if he followed his code like a Robot following its programming. He describes himself as a psychopath, as a robot without feelings to live by the code. But he's a human, like anyone else. Thats what makes the show interesting. Interesting breakdown though, while the show was running I had a similar perspective. Now the show has ended, I have a different one. It's mostly around the shows final season. It discovered its own formula and became stale for itself, and like anything, doesn't know how to end. Initially the writers wanted to end the show with Dexter being caught and getting executed by lethal injection, similar to how he would kill his victims.
