- On this episode of The Downshift, we take an inside look at one of the world's most respected BMW tuners around. Since 1979, Dinan has been pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the reliability to match BMW's factory warranty. Their products are the only performance products available through BMW dealers in North America and their cars are available at nearly a third of all BMW dealers in the USA.

Love the fact that his whole business is built on his grandest passion.
I'm a nissan guy. But I loved this video. I like how he describes why we love driving.
Not really a BMW fan but Dinan seems like a really good company. I like that it's founded and owned by a guy that isn't just a business guy but a driver.
That dude literally has my dream job
His story is very inspirational.
ManicGunner383 what's your interpretation of a "real car" ?
Iv F that statement only tells you he's probably never driven a bmw, trolls with tourette syndrome say funny things
i could feel the emotion coming out through my speakers
this is probably one of the best videos on motor trend. Whether we're american muscle fans or JDM fans, or anything else, this video serves as a reminder that we all share one common passion, and that's cars, and that is what brings us together!
Describing driving to people is really hard, Mr. Dinan came pretty close though at the end of the video.
Hmm yeah even some of my closest friends don't get it. They of course start rationalizing it as a waste of gas money amongst other things lol.
exactly bro. kinda hard to describe lol
Yeah, its really an indescribable feeling, you either love it, or dont really get it.
This is what tuning is about. Damn, if I could afford one, I would drive/buy one. Men like this are rare and I give the upmost respect for him.
That 1M!!
I love Dinan. I had some Dinan mods on my E60 M5 and they were great!
Amazing segment. Really shows how much he cares about the enjoyment of the product.
Everything I've had from Dinan from chips to intakes has been great. A+
I've bought the DinanS2 and the Dinan CAI ...both over performed their published specs. And the quality and build...impressive.
This video was so well done!! Terrific job Motor Trend!! You bring this to a new level!!!!!
"I like to drive cars fast...I like the enjoyment of just driving...I like the sensation of the G-force...of the speed of going fast...but I also more than anything like the sensation of being able to control a machine...There is nothing quite like coming out of the corner with a car really loaded up, squeezing throttle and have the thing leave the corner and just set you back in the seat and you are driving the car...under control and the car is just going somewhere...and I don't know how to describe it ...but I love the feeling." oh I know that feeling and love every second of it.
BMW ❤
XSsoundlevels not every driver are good drivers man. try that with the stig and then come back and post again...
peace
XSsoundlevels BMW actually severly under-rate their engines and cars' performance. For example the new M5 has 560hp, but people have dynoed it 540-560 hp at the wheels (which is about 600hp at the crank). BMW also claimed 0-60 at 4.3s, but C&D for example got it in just 3.6s. It's the same with other BMW models as well, their engines and performance being always underrated. My theory is that it is done to keep insurance cost low in Europe, where insurance costs rise with every additional hp. As for your experience, you probably met really bad drivers or something was not right with their car.
XSsoundlevels I haven't got much experience with either, but an acquintance has a stock 335i convertible and was able to do 0-100km/h (62 mph) which is what the manufacturer has claimed.
XSsoundlevels
You can't claim all the cars in those model ranges are that slow - you don't know the entire story behind the car. I'm not saying you're lying, just saying that for all you know there was an extra 100+lbs of weight in the trunk, with a driver that was heavier than you with a less than ideal maintenance history. So many factors going on. I have an 08 VW Golf. Mark V GTi DSG. Only thing that isn't stock are the wheels. Done 68000kms. Proper service done by proper techs has left my car in fantastic shape mechanically. My friend also owns the same model of car, essentially stock with aftermarket rims as well. Yet when it comes to a drag I beat him every time. Even when our cars are empty of crap etc. My car is still making slightly more power than his even though I've done more Kms because he hasn't taken as good of care as he should've lol.
Congrats on MT's first roomantic movie..
This video has some of the best music, cinematography and editing i have come across on RUclips .. Great job guys...
this guy deserves alot of respect
so AWESOMELY produced and shot. love the video.

I loves this. Short, sweet, and focused. Well done.
Great video! Made me fall in love with my 5 Series all over again. Kudos!
i remember the post it and sales aid in the back of road & track and car & driver. And I was just a lil lad dreaming the same dream as yourself... Especially about BMW's... This eposide has touch a part of me that made me remember and rekindle my love for cars and the brand that started my passion....
That mailbox seen was total genus! goose bumps goose bumps..

Great mini documentary on Dinan!
Thanks for making my Tuesday!
LOVE the passion of Mr. Dinan. Products are always better when the companies put passion into it. Gotta love what they can do to already great cars.
Awesome video MT, Thanks.
really cool stuff! thanks!
Man, so much passion :*)
Dinan you are living my dream. It's businesses like yours and people like you that inspire me to go to school for my engineering degree in hopes of becoming a part of something like this some day. Great story.
Not bad!
Awesome when your passion is what you do for a living.
Big key for success.
this guy for me is like Mr Pagani! what a great, awesome, down to earth enthusiast!!! and more importantly his in USA i love buying MADE IN U.S.A products. and for those say i've never heard of Dinan, they don't know BMW and MT great job i love the new way of making quality videos:)
MT whos the new Editor!? You all's last few videos have been nothing short of excellent.
The Bi-Turbo 135xi is one of my favorite autocross cars. Loads of fun.
Awesome! Not only an awesome video about cars, but a great story of the American Dream! Work hard everyone!
Nicely done MT! Great commercial for Dinan.
Great video!!!!
Great video.
no words ....just amazing feels ....
Great Video!
Great video 👍
Don't like BMW but I like this guy's, seems to be a down to earth guy who truly loves what he does
i know that feeling and am addicted the mountains near my house in north georgia in my e30
used to have a Dinan center fold magazine poster on my bedroom wall as a child. All I remember is it was a Black 4 door. it was beautiful though
I loved this video! Props! One of my dreams is to be a driver like this! :)
Just brilliant. Work for Dinan is such a dream coming truth. I would like to do it. Amazing.
I love dinan, but with the g-power package for the e60 m5, I wonder what g-power can squeeze out of the twin turbo v8. I know bmw is trying to save gas, but I'm a naturally aspirated man. Let that engine roar. V10 power.
Big N/As are the best.
+Nick G Dinan isn't just about jacking up the horsepower. They focus on a lot of engineering development to ensure that the car is well-balanced. Plus, all their products come with a long warranty.
True Elliott, but g-power is up there with dinan too!
These guys are amazing...
This guy explains why he loves going fast so well. He can't explain why... he just loves the feeling of going fast. Fuck yeah.
Dinan's President described word to word how I drive my cars and the reason why as well. Great guy.
5:58 - THAT quote, manly tears.
That's why we do it, right?
keep it up MT!
Ending lines from Dinan are great
They seem like down to earth people and they build great things. Cool video of a cool company.
My brother had a dinan exhaust on his e46 m3 dinan changed the car form 4 pipes to 2 sounds amazing and make more horsepower definitely a quality product
what a great guy and a great video, God bless Dinan and BMW
This should be call "BMW: A Love Story - Dinan Tuners" Great video
Dinan, Henessey, and APR are some of the best US tuners in my opinion. They make their products, and boy whay great products they come up with (Dinan BMW tune, HPE package, APR Audi and VW tune). I think it would be nice to become their employee and their colleague.
+cominacatcha It's just too bad John Henessey is a dick, because he really does know how to build a car. I don't know how that guy is still in business.
MAEguy Is John Henessey an annoying person? I'm not an american so I don't know how is his attitude. Only seen him several times in youtube talking about the Henessey Venom or about the HPE cars.
+cominacatcha Please John Hennessey is a crook ask many Viper owners and they wiil tell you.He se been taken through the legal system.
cominacatcha He has been sued repeatedly for fucking over his customers. If you don't live in Texas and come check on your car frequently while they're "working on it" don't expect it to get done. He's even sold parts off customers cars before trying to sell them new upgraded parts at a big profit. Despite the fact that his dickishness is well known in many communities he still gets enough publicity to keep getting new customers and keep the cash flowing. Despite seeming like a nice guy in interviews, he devolves into a complete prick when confronted about his lawsuits, unethical business practices, and extremely rude behavior. He's been banned from several forums after insulting anyone who questions him (including moderators) and just generally being an asshole.
MAEguy Wow, didn't know that before. Thanks for the information.
Subjective journalism. I still love yo MT
High end hot rodding in the 21st Century. Love it! There has never been a factory car which could not be improved. Believed this all my life.
When he said "To me it doesn't matter to get it out the door it matters to make it perfect!" I thought to my self why don't more people think like this guy.....
He seems really comfortable is front of the camera, haha. Seriously though, kudos to all his hard work.
Excellence, through every gear in the cog of that outfit.
Just the other day I was wondering whatever happened to Dinan. Crazy coincidence. Great Vid
Best downshift episode
Love seeing people take so much pride in their work/passion. Not enough of that these days it seems.
Just when I thought I'd hit a RUclips video with the preceding advert.....
SO MUCH EMOTIONS AND CAR PASSIONS IN THIS VIDEO. MADE ME ALMOST TEARING. t-t
This looks like an awesome company I'd love to work some place like this, I'd love to see what he's made of the e30m
Awesome person . Love to work for him . It's all about cars , that's what I miss in today's bosses
true !
i know the feeling love it too !
Its tough to make a BMW better that is already is.
However I'd like to give this guy a hand shake.
Super work!
Very nice story...best part is real.
I love the show, the content, the car, and my self ! ;)
that was amazing! I almost cried tbh
M5 looks amazing but the M1 ! Wow slick , fast and smart!
Would love to drive the M1 !!!
Good video MT keep it up
RESPECT!
that e34 540i turbo wow in m colours in the back round love it
It's funny, I think similarly to Mr Dinan. I get a free tank of gas a week with my work, so I will drive very fuel efficiently during the week, so that on Saturday I can put $5-10 in, and drive over an hour to some of my favorite roads. I will drive my 328 like I stole it, then head back to the filling station after a few hours and get my free fill up. Next week do it all over again. And in six months, only one speeding ticket (I framed the receipt).
Couldn't agree w you more dude!!
Own an Alpina B3 but have always been curious about Dinan, you don't really get their stuff in the UK. They have an impressive setup, it's good to see they have a sound R&D process and clearly are well liked in the US. Hopefully they'll start having a bigger presence in the EU.
Awesome!
This guy is awesome.
last speech about the corner is so true. shivers . aha
I wish they still made parts for MINI's! I would love to see what they could do for my 2013 R56 JCW! Its not just parts that are great but also engine tuning.
His last statement was perfect
I hate to sound critical but it's hard to transform a BMW into the perfect car using only the judgments of a single person. There really needs to be a team of individuals brainstorming the ultimate end product. The same group also needs to be intimately involved in the design and testing instead of their only purpose being a stamp of approval.
That's why the company is called Dinan. Because of his name he's branding BMW's on the way he would prefer it. That's pretty much how owners of tuner companies are. It's no different on Walter Rohrl's input with Porsche and Schumacher on Ferrari's.
Beautiful!..
