    My Grandma Eiko San used to make grilled fish with rice, natto, miso soup, tamagoyaki and tsukemono for breakfast all the time when I was a kid! If I had to pick a last meal, that would be it. A comforting Japanese breakfast. Thank you so much for sharing this! Much love and wishes for safe travels from Oregon ❤.

    Thanks so much for taking us on your summer Alaskan adventure! Looking forward to what comes next and that Channel Islands trip sounds super fun. My brother and I backpacked a total of 37 miles on Santa Cruz island over 3 days a few years back and it was absolutely amazing. We pretty much hiked every trail open to the public. Would be so fun to join you on your trip to the islands!

    random extra thought for you: I have a clean, empty 120 gallon acrylic tank 18 deep, 5 foot wide, 30 inches tall if you want to borrow it for your trip to keep lobsters etc alive and fresh. I could swing you an air bubbler too. and if the hotline agrees on october 1st, I'll be collecting mussels... wanted to share that I bring seawater home (but you can use fresh) and I put little cookie cooling racks in the bottom of a cooler, then add wheat bran (you can use flour or anything as long as it's finely ground) then mix, then the mussels. they filter feed the bran and expel any sand or grit or any kind of nasty from their system, and if they're elevated over the grate, it falls through and they don't take it back in. I usually leave them overnight but 2-6 hours works. I go for the mediums but if you do get huge ones watch your teeth for tiny pink pearls, especially if you grab them from the intertidal regions near sand! I try to get mine off the end of the pier where they don't eat sand therefore less cleaning and no pearls. crossing my fingers they'll be safe on the 1st so I can put this fishing license to good use! I've just been pier fishing, which is free to all anyway, but I don't mind helping California Fish & Wildlife have a little extra cash each year either way. anyone else reading this please don't go murdering huge mussels for pearls, the biggest one that almost broke my tooth was about 1.5 mm and that could have been a 30 year old mussel, a breeder, and they're tough, it just broke off with another one I was harvesting. go for the small to mediums that look clean, that way the filter feeders (barnacles etc) living on them can continue to clean our ocean as well!

I think you'll dig em and this tree just exploded in the first 2 years so after you taste them it's worth planting one. ours is like 4 or 5 now and already the whole family can't keep up even though my dad mainlines lemon water all day.

    Lake trout are fantastic to eat! Not quite as good as northern pike out of clean cold water in my oppinion but still fantastic. I lived in Alaska the first 28 years of my life and those colder water fish are much better to eat than warmer water fish of the same species. Your videos are some of the best I've ever seen. You are living the dream! Keep up the good work.

      @peterfuchs4596 Год назад

      Sounds great! BUT I must opine differently when talking warm water reef fish from remote pacific lagoons. They definitely taste unique and from their area as many eat seaweeds small crabs etc. Groupers, snappers, triggers, you never know what you'll pull up. And best is gut and grill low heat and you can pull off the skin and meat just debones itself. Don't even need salt really. Some like triggers , goatfish,and surgeons . Large grey snappers ( uku) , rarely parrots and big wrasse. I don't even gut em as the limu seaweed in the gut lends flavor but I do discard. These are so good but be warned not flavorless big pelagic like marlin. Need no seasoning just rice and soy if so inclined. If lucky occasionally you might snag octopus. Also at night mackerel scads on sabiki. Cut in chunks soak in lime rock salt sprinkles onion and chili and coconut milk ceviche style. Bony hand beer food. SAVE THE LIQUID chill and strain and drink in the am!
      Above not for everyone as kind of acquired taste and a lot of bones but NOTHING like a big 5lb green trigger bbqd. Peel off that leathery skin and pull huge chunks of boneless meat. Dab of soy or AL fresco! And if you find good seaweed or uni smear it on!

      @@lukelofgren4108 right on Bro. Just wanted to raise awareness as Sooo many never had reef fish and no idea. Even premium SW pelagic like Mahi wahoo got nothing on some of the "nasty" reef fish. I want to try Lionfish as their diet and flesh awesome.
      Believe it or not but a medium Moray Eel grilled is such a fat tube of goodness. Be sure to always check with locals and share as they know a few species laden with ciguatera . Take em out with you and they are most grateful hospitable helpful anywhere. Plus share cooking tips like banana leaf wraps and local shore herbs and especially local seaweeds which superfood. Thank you for your input.
      I'll take a fat pike . Lobster of the lake! And yes colder FW the better cuz they store fat.
      Halibut way over rated . Cod a 5 star. Mackerel 5 star esp marinated in miso paste and grilled. I'm not a know it all but so sad many don't know a lot more to life than salmon and Mahi and how EASY to gut and grill. Head on! Cooler to the plate in 5 minutes. Frying in an outdoor wok using pig fat or tallow a winner too! Yeah it stinks so buy a 40 dollar outdoor wok/grill and a bottle of propane. Expect flies! Means it's good!
      I also tried this fish called oil fish that the deep sea long liners were throwing away. Probably a kind of Ling cod. Uglyyyyy black snake like. Warning 4 oz per sitting or you be SHITTING.. salt and freeze and seal. Miso rub BBQ with your drier pelagic. WAY better than any cooked tuna

It was hard to tell if you had a steel leader, but here if you don't have a steel leader you're almost guaranteed to lose the fish of it's northern Pike. I hear they also like the 'mouse' lure. Anyway it would be super cool to meet you in person if you're coming through here.
