- Come on a 3 day catch and cook trip with me on a boat! I've planned a lobster freediving/fishing trip out of santa barbara, CA
TRIP IS FULL
My Grandma Eiko San used to make grilled fish with rice, natto, miso soup, tamagoyaki and tsukemono for breakfast all the time when I was a kid! If I had to pick a last meal, that would be it. A comforting Japanese breakfast. Thank you so much for sharing this! Much love and wishes for safe travels from Oregon ❤.
Natto is the worst food I’ve ever had 🤢🤮
It looks like someones cummed in your beans
Thanks so much for taking us on your summer Alaskan adventure! Looking forward to what comes next and that Channel Islands trip sounds super fun. My brother and I backpacked a total of 37 miles on Santa Cruz island over 3 days a few years back and it was absolutely amazing. We pretty much hiked every trail open to the public. Would be so fun to join you on your trip to the islands!
Living outdoors is awesome. Thank you for sharing your passion and talents
Thanks for your videos today is day 23 in the hospital due to dual kidney failure and thank God for your videos
Reminds me of the food we had at an onsen on Mt Fuji. My kids caught the fish and the people at the onsen cooked it and served it to us and looked just like that. It was sooooooo good! Love the videos!
random extra thought for you: I have a clean, empty 120 gallon acrylic tank 18 deep, 5 foot wide, 30 inches tall if you want to borrow it for your trip to keep lobsters etc alive and fresh. I could swing you an air bubbler too. and if the hotline agrees on october 1st, I'll be collecting mussels... wanted to share that I bring seawater home (but you can use fresh) and I put little cookie cooling racks in the bottom of a cooler, then add wheat bran (you can use flour or anything as long as it's finely ground) then mix, then the mussels. they filter feed the bran and expel any sand or grit or any kind of nasty from their system, and if they're elevated over the grate, it falls through and they don't take it back in. I usually leave them overnight but 2-6 hours works. I go for the mediums but if you do get huge ones watch your teeth for tiny pink pearls, especially if you grab them from the intertidal regions near sand! I try to get mine off the end of the pier where they don't eat sand therefore less cleaning and no pearls. crossing my fingers they'll be safe on the 1st so I can put this fishing license to good use! I've just been pier fishing, which is free to all anyway, but I don't mind helping California Fish & Wildlife have a little extra cash each year either way. anyone else reading this please don't go murdering huge mussels for pearls, the biggest one that almost broke my tooth was about 1.5 mm and that could have been a 30 year old mussel, a breeder, and they're tough, it just broke off with another one I was harvesting. go for the small to mediums that look clean, that way the filter feeders (barnacles etc) living on them can continue to clean our ocean as well!
Super cool video. One thing I love is that your travels and adventures satiate the wanderlust, but you also add practical tips that a lot of us can try regardless of where we are.
My grandfather had a cabin in Quebec off a river for years, he was the pike and walleye whisper. He swore by mepps comet minnow spinners. He had an aluminum flat bottom and would just troll up the river drinking beer all day. Walleye is delicious! Pike put up one hell of a fight!
Awesome dude just flat out awesome. What a nice trip you guys have had. I hope you are able to continue this and be successful at it.
Your gonna love Jasper. I saw my first bear there just a few ft. off the road. Its wide open country and the air is sparkling clean. Just being there is enough anything else is a bonus. Enjoy!
Jocelyn’s dimples are so cute !!
Every episode is perfect.
Love your style of videos. Relaxing and uplifting. Good for the soul. Thank you!
I used to hate Tuesdays. Now its my favorite day😁
Whoever gets too) go will be so lucky. Can't wait to see the episode! Happy and safe travels
i love how he puts food on her plate. It's heartwarming.
Loved this Alaska series! Congrats on the chili oil! Could you make a short series with super simple starter catch clean cook recipes? I have a month out of school and I really want to try this myself! I’ve done it once already, but it was super basic with crappie, salt, pepper, and oil.
That's an incredible amount of effort for breakfast... by the time you finish its lunchtime! But, if I was staying at a nice eco-resort and this showed up for breakfast made by the chef, I wouldn't complain (except the natto... not my thing).
I just love watching your videos. I've learned so much. Great simple recipes and how to clean and prepare what you catch. You two are awesome. Thank you for sharing your travels. 🥰🥰
Big loud inline spinners work great for Pike. Anything bright and fast has always worked for me
this guy is actually living life, i hope to have a job like this in the future.
Saw the video of the trip and looked awesome! So much fun and great eating of the catches. Do more of these please, especially in California!
always enjoy. long time follower. your receips are incredible. enjoy your road trip to canada
Best couples outdoor explorer
Love the away you filetted the trout. Where we are in north central Arkansas in the White river thats a big trout. Truly enjoy your videos.. Now I just have to convince she who must be obeyed that a trip to Alaska is essential to our well being.
How cool! I’ve been watching you for a few years now and always enjoyed the different kinds of fish you catch. I’m Canadian and Pike is very common around here, I’ve caught many myself, they’re a fun fight. I love that you’re excited about getting one and that it’ll be your first! Cheers!! 🇨🇦
Blue/pink/silver spoon. I like a red spoon with white stripe and troll for Northern. 👍🏾
oh I've got some crazy lemons you might like, too. they're called pink lemonade, and they're a tiny bit sweet but not like a persian or a meyer. they're zebra striped until fully ripe and have a pretty wide flavor range depending on how ripe they are. I think you'll dig em and this tree just exploded in the first 2 years so after you taste them it's worth planting one. ours is like 4 or 5 now and already the whole family can't keep up even though my dad mainlines lemon water all day.
24:31 Jocelyn looked sad when u left her hanging 🍵🍵. Great video anyways Taku 👍🏻👍🏻
That’s a great idea, maybe have a few series of video making different fishing snack / meals so that you can have something to eat while you’re out fishing 😅
Natto with rice is one of my absolute favorite breakfasts!
The Mat Brewing Hazy is one of my favorite go to's!!!
Big fan of these videos that span multiple days
18 subscribers that's gonna be an awesome series so excited to watch!!! Xo
Beautiful video. You guys looked great. Nice trout and great preparation. Be safe and careful as you continue
The trip sounds amazing…..I live just down the road in Malibu….hiked, surfed, and dove the islands many times. Have plans ….but would love to meet you guys in person, K
Wow the northern lights haven't seen one yet & always delicious fresh food
Here's an official goodbye to the summer, even tho the weather says otherwise lol
I like that fish cam. It kind of teaches you what they don’t like lol
Beautiful end to the Alaskan adventure! I loved the close up shots of the trout cooking over the fire and the walk to the hot springs. It's not that common to eat fish for breakfast in the US, but man, I would be in heaven eating that meal.
Northern lights, hot springs, and cooking... I love this channel!
This school year has been a bit of a nightmare, so I've been making up missed videos watching them twice on of days!
All your content is informative and teach more people how to cook outdoors ❤️✌️
i forgot to watch this last week and now i get ANOTHER EPISODE TOMORROW.
I used to catch a crap ton of pikes with frog lures. They float atop the water as your reel them in, it was almost a sure thing they would go crazy for it. Very fun to watch them break the surface to grab it as well. If real frogs are legal near you, they work even better.
When I was a kid I was taught when trout fly fishing that you insert your thumb into the mouth and pry up 90° and snap its neck, works the same
You and Jocelyn should do more workshops for your subscribers that don't know how to do all of that. It would kind of be like homesteaders but with fishing and Etc.
It was amazing to see how quickly the lake went from millpond smooth to really choppy! And I had to chuckle when you said you hadn't seen any fish, when the go-pro in the water showed us that your lure was being followed. I hpe you can do some filming of your next venture: it'll be interesting to compare and contrast the two trips!
Awesome video! The new trick is to end with no notice!
I Jocelyn and Taku ! I catch a lot of lake trout and pike by canoe. For lake trout that in my opinion is not so good tasty and the best i find is smoke or deep fry. For pike after you make a good fileting job you ave some choices, smoke is good or lightly cook like with « beure blanc » Love your knife skill, with one of the most sharp knive chef on the web, i am not alone with nice edge tools. Bravo
throw your green onions into ice water after cutting for 10 minutes, they curl and make it look “fancy”. awesome vid!
Wish I could go but health issues dont allow it. Ill look forward to living the dream through you all.
Used to cook fish like that in Boy Scouts, and stream side while growing up. Love your Chili Crisp. Getting addicted to it
Wonderful video. Thank you!
Him puting the fish slightly away from michel kinda looks cute haha
I love your channel, I watch at work so I have to keep the volume way down. it would be cool if you could keep it all the same volume in post production if possible. but keep doing what your doing. you inspire me all the time thanks!
Lake trout are fantastic to eat! Not quite as good as northern pike out of clean cold water in my oppinion but still fantastic. I lived in Alaska the first 28 years of my life and those colder water fish are much better to eat than warmer water fish of the same species. Your videos are some of the best I've ever seen. You are living the dream! Keep up the good work.
Sounds great! BUT I must opine differently when talking warm water reef fish from remote pacific lagoons. They definitely taste unique and from their area as many eat seaweeds small crabs etc. Groupers, snappers, triggers, you never know what you'll pull up. And best is gut and grill low heat and you can pull off the skin and meat just debones itself. Don't even need salt really. Some like triggers , goatfish, and surgeons . Large grey snappers ( uku) , rarely parrots and big wrasse. I don't even gut em as the limu seaweed in the gut lends flavor but I do discard. These are so good but be warned not flavorless big pelagic like marlin. Need no seasoning just rice and soy if so inclined. If lucky occasionally you might snag octopus. Also at night mackerel scads on sabiki. Cut in chunks soak in lime rock salt sprinkles onion and chili and coconut milk ceviche style. Bony hand beer food. SAVE THE LIQUID chill and strain and drink in the am!
Above not for everyone as kind of acquired taste and a lot of bones but NOTHING like a big 5lb green trigger bbqd. Peel off that leathery skin and pull huge chunks of boneless meat. Dab of soy or AL fresco! And if you find good seaweed or uni smear it on!
@@peterfuchs4596 I was only talking about fresh water fish from colder water. Saltwater fish from anywhere are awesome!
@@lukelofgren4108 right on Bro. Just wanted to raise awareness as Sooo many never had reef fish and no idea. Even premium SW pelagic like Mahi wahoo got nothing on some of the "nasty" reef fish. I want to try Lionfish as their diet and flesh awesome.
Believe it or not but a medium Moray Eel grilled is such a fat tube of goodness. Be sure to always check with locals and share as they know a few species laden with ciguatera . Take em out with you and they are most grateful hospitable helpful anywhere. Plus share cooking tips like banana leaf wraps and local shore herbs and especially local seaweeds which superfood. Thank you for your input.
I'll take a fat pike . Lobster of the lake! And yes colder FW the better cuz they store fat.
Halibut way over rated . Cod a 5 star. Mackerel 5 star esp marinated in miso paste and grilled. I'm not a know it all but so sad many don't know a lot more to life than salmon and Mahi and how EASY to gut and grill. Head on! Cooler to the plate in 5 minutes. Frying in an outdoor wok using pig fat or tallow a winner too! Yeah it stinks so buy a 40 dollar outdoor wok/grill and a bottle of propane. Expect flies! Means it's good!
I also tried this fish called oil fish that the deep sea long liners were throwing away. Probably a kind of Ling cod. Uglyyyyy black snake like. Warning 4 oz per sitting or you be SHITTING.. salt and freeze and seal. Miso rub BBQ with your drier pelagic. WAY better than any cooked tuna
@@peterfuchs4596 best fish I've ever had I couldn't figure out what exactly it was. Was fishing prince William sound with my dad years ago when I caught it. Only a 2 pound fish and looked like a small ling cod but the colors were all wrong and not much for teeth. Good chatting with you.
@@peterfuchs4596 and yes, northern pike are hands down the best fresh water fish I've ever had 10x over. Best 9ne I had was out of the Yukon river tributaries
Thanks for your videos
Love the blue hair. She is so pretty.
Great video as always bro. I think they call the fish a Splake1/2 Laker 1/2 Brook { speckeled Trout} Keep em comin Bud. I have learned soo much from your style of cooking . Thank you!!!
Hey TaKu, Your Salmon turned out super good 🐦.
You got your Trout 🙌🔥.
Enjoy !
JO JO IN VT 😆💕
Hello taku! I'm an old fan of yours, I'm hungry after seeing your cooking video, the video is very good, keep updating the speed
I love these videos man, such an awesome adventure of life you guys live! Keep it up! The videos are unique and entertaining 👏🏼
On the lures you showed I would use the cripple minnow Rapala, tks for the videos you got some fantastic show and that fish you cook always looks yummy tks may god bless.
Hiya chef and Jocelyn. Let's see Jocelyn catching and cooking again. That bear was Lucky she let him go. Could have made a good roast with him. Heheh
I dunno why, but i like this video so much
Ah! Alder smoking. In Sweden, it's commonly used to smoke weiners. Delicious flavor. Good pick!
Love the breakfast!
🌴 Hey Taku and Jocelyn, smoked salmon 👍 yum ! Ya the northern lights are breathtaking , now the best bet for pike are live bait but if your casting silver spoons ,that rapala ,or even that big rubber bait fish lure , lake trout are excellent when I lived up north we did trout boils 👍. Always excited to see what you two are up to next y’all said you were going tropical again, I’m in west central Florida we’re having a cat 3-4 hurricane tomorrow 115mph winds , things are going to get a bit exciting I’ve been through all of them for the last 35 years hope this one won’t be my last one later guys 👊🏼✌️
Wow getting ready for the fishing and so much more. Love the cooking fish and also my chef knife MISEN. Makes my day seeing you with the same Chef Knife. Again thank you, 😢Any tips of care for storage for fish and other foraging we can do? Love you and the content keep up the tremendous work. Still watching the garden vids.. 😊 ❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome again.
perfect breakfast
Excellent VIDEO 📹 👏 👍 👌 😀
In the UK we dead bait, live bait, and use shads or surface lures rigged up barbless (if it starts thrashing you'll be glad there aren't any barbs 😂)
Love the spoon lure. I wanna get my dad that for a novelty item
If you want Northern Pike you have to use a light color lure but it does depend on the season most of the time.
One of those large spoons or non-jointed jerk baits would be my choices for pike. I think the crank baits and swim baits would catch bass primarily - except for that MASSIVE swimbait, lol, that would catch a huge pike or Muskie!
To be honest. U should visit Finland and go to lapland sometimes! Amazing nature and many northern lights.
Head and meadow mouse, achun frog bait, or the arbogast jitterbug (red and white) always work for me with Pike!
I remember when Jocelyn didn't like cooked fish 😅. It's good she tries all of your food and enjoys it
Great video, thanks 👍
You keep doing trips like that I’ll be there. Great job on the video I love to learn some Japanese recipes and harvesting techniques.
Your food always looks do amazing and makes me hungry. Would love to camp a weekend with you guys. Thanks for sharing your adventures. It always brings me mood up to watch
I would use that big silver spoon out of your layout there! i love the mid-video cheers
For pikes, I always use wobblers.
Taku, you should make a cookbook. I love your recipes!
this Alaska content is awesome
The alaskan adventure was epic. Can't wait to join y'all out on the channel islands!
loved the video taku i look forward to them every day i love the japanese cooking style
Kind of sounds like you might be rolling right into my back yard. I'm in Flathead Valley Montana. Here, the Northern Pike take a liking to the fox tail (black) lure. It was hard to tell if you had a steel leader, but here if you don't have a steel leader you're almost guaranteed to lose the fish of it's northern Pike. I hear they also like the 'mouse' lure. Anyway it would be super cool to meet you in person if you're coming through here.
Loving the content! Excited to see the Vision boat trip! Also, I put that chili crisps on everything lol
Natto, baby! lol I def would have used the green rapala. You need to take a trip and go pike and muskie in Michigan and fish the great lakes!! We also have burbot, and I'd love to see you do something amazing with a huge carp from a pier since there is so much stigma against those. And mushroom foraging in the spring and fall is so huge we have whole towns that claim mushrooms as part of our culture. Not spoken of as much as the pnw, but definitely up to par!
Nice fishing 🎣
That smoked salmon cook up looked amazing! Cheers for sharing the fun! Stay safe! Eat Well! 🐟😁👍👌🤠🦘
Such a pretty breakfast! I just got your chili kelp crisp in the mail. So good! But spicy! A little dab goes a long way, LOL! Can't wait to try it on salmon.
Very cool!
any of the spoons or meps spinners are always juice. really been enjoying the videos taku! safe travels
Love the videos! Pickerel in the southern states (a cousin of pike) will eat pretty much anything a bass will. Top-Water, Spinners, Anything flashy, etc.
So cool!!
Wish I wasnt traveling or id join for the channel islands trip. Hope you keep doing it would love to join in the future!
