Thank God it's not only coming to Switch, but coming digitally! I was worried that it was gonna be exclusive to that GBA cart by Limited Run Games... I love how literally every Shantae game is on Switch. I only have the original, Risky's Revenge, and Half Genie Hero atm, but I'm DEFINITELY gonna pick up Pirate's Curse, Seven Sirens, and this eventually.
After getting into the Shantae series relatively recently during October for my birthday this year by starting off with Half-Genie Hero and then later playing through Seven Siren's after impulse buying the game when it went on sale, I've definitely become a bit of a Shantae fan and I can safely say that I'm looking forward to this game. While I've got plans to play Pirate's Curse next, I think I might wait for this game to come out before I move on to playing the OG and Risky's Revenge. What I love the most is how they used the more modern art style for the original character designs which makes me happy because in all honesty, despite the old art style not being bad by any sense of the imagination, it's hard to go back to the art style of the first two games when we've been accustomed to the modern style for so long (not only is it stylistically better, but the characters look cuter as well in the modern art style). The only thing I know that I'm not going to like is going back to the original dance mechanics. With HGH and SS being my first experience with Shantae's animal transformations, I already know that I'm going to probably get extremely irritated by not being to transform easily and instantly. Aside from that, I'm looking forward to this game overall and it's great to see a 22 year old game that was originally cancelled get revived once again. I also appreciate the return to 16-bit graphics despite my preference for the hand drawn animation and HD graphics seen in HGH and SS. It makes me happy to see this franchise grow as the Shantae series absolutely deserves to get more recognition by the gaming community. HGH and SS were phenomenal games in my opinion and based off of the gameplay I've seen from speed runs of the first three games they seem pretty solid as well (especially PC which I've heard is considered the best game among the fan base). I welcome this sixth entry to the franchise with open arms and I'm looking forward to seeing what Wayforward has in store for us this time.
While circumstances forced you into playing the two most recent games first, it's probably better from a story perspective to play the remaining games in chronological order, meaning you should save "Pirate's Curse" for last.
@@Compucles fair point, however I’ve already had the story spoiled for me so at this point it probably doesn’t matter which game I play next. I’m currently on the fence for the OG Shantae, primarily because the screen looks extremely cramped which isn’t exactly good when you’re being bombarded by several enemies. I’ve got no problem playing old retro games or (difficult games for that matter), but the cramped screen is somewhat of a deal breaker in my opinion and it’s really hard for me to look past it. I did some research on Risky’s Revolution and apparently it takes place after the OG Shantae game and before the events of Risky’s Revenge. If I go for Revolution next, I won’t really be missing out on much in terms of story. On top of this the gameplay will be a lot smoother and the screen won’t be as cramped from everything I’ve seen in the trailer. I’ll take into consideration to leave PC for last, however among the first three Shantae games I’ve watched, PC looks the most attractive to me at the current moment. I will agree with the overall sentiment though that Pirate’s Curse should never be somebody’s first Shantae game both on a gameplay level and on a lore level despite how good the actual game is.

Well this was originally Shantae 2 as this a direct sequel to the first game that got canceled. With that said if you want to play chronologically, only the first game is required since this is basically Shantae 1.5
Just recently got back into Shantae after playing a little bit of one of the iOS ports when I was really young. I wasn't a fan of the layered traversal in Risky's Revenge, but I'm excited to see the return of the rhythmic dance routines!
Especially the moving between layers thing, it was something that the Kirby games on the 3DS did and also that one Wario game on Virtual Boy. The 3D effect would have complement it.
If you wanna, I say start with Risky's Revenge if you wanna do lore, then Pirate's Curse for more lore, then Half-Genie Hero (Which can be a starting point), then Seven Sirens If you don't care for lore but just wanna play, then just do Half-Genie Hero and then Seven Sirens. Half-Genie Hero makes just one reference that makes players go "Oh hey, so this is when it takes place", but it is semi-inconsequential
If you're going based off of story, start with the first game or Risky's Revenge. If you're going based off of gameplay, start with Half-Genie Hero for general gameplay or Seven Sirens if you want to stick with the Metroidvania style gameplay the series is known for. If you're going based off of ease of access both in a gameplay sense and simply just trying to buy the game, start with Half-Genie Hero. If you're going based off of content, again just start with Half-Genie Hero as the game has a lot of DLC that changes up the traditional formula. Pirate's Curse is considered the best game in the franchise by the majority of the fan base, however the mechanics are much more different as instead of using magic and animal transformations you instead must use pirate gear to traverse the levels. So in a gameplay sense it's not the best to start off with, and on top of this it takes place in the middle of the story of the franchise so it's not a great game to start off with for lore reasons either. Half-Genie Hero also strays away from the traditional formula by making you go through a set of levels (like Mario) rather than an interconnected 2D world (like Metroid) but at least you can carry the actual mechanics and gameplay of Shantae from this game over to the other games somewhat flawlessly compared to her appearance in Pirate's Curse (i.e. it's easier to play something like Seven Sirens after HGH compared to after playing PC since SS Shantae's gameplay has more in common with HGH Shantae's gameplay). Overall, I started my journey into the Shantae franchise with HGH and I think the game is perfect for beginners of the series. Playing the DLC can also be a treat once you beat the main game as it offers you a lot more content (be warned though, the DLC is rather hit or miss. Pirate Queen's Quest and Officer Mode would be examples of good DLC whilst Friend's To The End and Beach Mode would be examples of bad DLC for HGH). If you feel like you must stick with the Metroidvania style gameplay though to get a feel of what the Shantae series is normally like, then just play the OG game/RR for lore or SS for gameplay.
