He’s one of my favorite players. He plays anything and his arrangements are always understandable and respectful.
Richard has a great song selection to show off his fingerstyle technique. You tend to get some great songs to select from when you're playing songs from Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and Merle Travis. To tell you what a great fingerstyle guitarist he is, Smith won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas in 2001. The National Thumbpickers Hall of Fame named him Thumbpicker of the Year in 2008 and 2021 and inducted him into the Hall of Fame in 2009. At age 11, pre-adolescent Smith took the stage with Chet Atkins and blew his mind even at that age.
